Hi I’m Matt Lockey, welcome to my Coach Lockey YouTube Channel. This YouTube channel is designed to help you play better golf, and to help you enjoy your golf more!
I specialise in golf course vlogs, golf challenges, golf tips, golf lessons, golf club reviews and the odd golf club unboxing. So pretty much everything golf!
I want to help you play better golf by providing coaching videos on all topics about golf. How to fix your slice, fix your hook, help you drive the golf ball longer, hit your irons more pure, hit your irons closer to the hole and help you draw and fade your golf shots.
As well as helping you produce the best long game you can have, I will help you lower your scores by chipping better, stopping duff and thin chips, pitching the ball closer and creating backspin like the tour pros. Finally, I will provide you help to putt better and hole more putts too!

If you want to stop pulling the golf ball left, you need to check this in your golf swing. If you stop making this golf swing mistake, you will quickly stop pulling the golf ball with both irons and driver. Pulling the golf ball can be so destructive out on the golf course. So, knowing what golf swing fault causes you to pull the golf ball and having a simple fix is only going to help you lower your scores. So, what is this golf swing mistake and how can we fix it? Well, so many golfers that I see that struggle with pulling the golf ball is their relationship between their trail hand and their trail shoulder. Now, if I set myself up and work my way to the top of my back swing, what I see with people that struggle with pulls is that their trail hand passes their trail shoulder. So my right hand and my right shoulder, the right hand passes over my right shoulder as it kind of gets level to it. So I’m going over my right shoulder here with my trail hand. What we need to see in all golf swings is a lowering of the arms and hands in the down swing. And if you do that correctly, you’ll start to see that your trail hand will move beneath your trail shoulder as you move down in that sort of transition area. So instead of this trail hand working over your trail shoulder, it will start to move under that trail shoulder. The difference between the two are going to have a massive impact on your club path. Golfers that are struggling with pools have an out toin path and their face is generally square to that path which makes the ball start left and go further left. So what you see when that trail hand moves over the shoulder, you get your club way out too far in front of you, which causes those big out to in swing paths. Whereas if we get the lowering of the arms and the hands at the top of our down swings, you’ll start to see completely different club paths and relationships with that impact. So you’ll start to neutralize your path. It will start to be a lot straighter or maybe even a bit more in to out completely eliminating those pull shots. So here’s a little golf tip or drill to help you understand how you need to be lowering your arms in that down swing to help you stop pulling the golf ball. So what I want you to do is set up to the golf ball like you’re going to hit one and swing to the top of your back swings. And what you’ll find is that you’ve got bit of a gap between your trail arm here and the side of your chest and rib cage. What I want you to do to get these arms lowering and get this trail hand moving below your trail shoulder is get this gap to reduce. Okay? So it will feel like you’re starting to pinch your trail arm against the side of your chest. Okay? rather than creating this gap here and then your trail hand moving above your trail shoulder, keeping this gap. So, what I want you basically to do is go to the top and get that gap narrowing and get that trail arm get touching your rib cage and the side of your chest there. It will start to feel like your arms are lowering. Look. Okay. And you might think, “My club is way behind me here, and that’s not right.” Well, if you think about lowering your hands, I’m not putting any rotation in at the moment, but if I was to now rotate onto the golf ball, I’m in a very nice impact position. So, if your club is way back here, don’t worry too much. It’s just we’re getting you to understand how your arms and hands need to work at the start of that down swing, not out over here getting a big gap sort of between your hands and your knee area. We want hands on top of knees when your arms sort of parallel to the floor. These are sort of checkpoints that you can look at. And as you start to get that feeling of those arms luring, just swing through a few times and get an understanding of what that feels like. If you’re on the range practicing, just chip a few forwards. You don’t have to hit it very far. Get a feeling of the arms lowering and then just chip a few forward. Look at that ball starting out to the right, drawing back. That is completely different to a ball that is starting down the left and going left. Then when you get a bit more confident, start to build it up up to the top. Get that space disappear in between arm and chest. And then repeat in your golf swing. Oh yeah, that’s a bomber. The relationship between your trail hand and your trail shoulder and how it’s working at the start of that down swing will completely eliminate those pull shots. Get those arms lowering. It’s going to change your club path and make it more neutral to more into out and completely get rid of those pools. I hope this golf lesson helps your golf game and completely transforms the way you hit the golf ball. Remember, this works with both irons and driver. So, make sure you’re trying it with both. I’ve been pulling everything so far this spring and it’s been very frustrating. This is exactly what I’ve been looking for and I can’t wait to give it a go on the range. Thanks Coach!!
Isn't that called 'over the top'? Swinging to 1 o'clock (swing thought) generally helps that since you can't swing to 1 o'clock with an over the top downswing start.
Great tip. Ill try this
Thanks coach Lockey I love you
Going to focus on this later today at the range. Thank you.
This is the Justin Thomas drill. Cheers
This can and will also help prevent weak slices as a result of over the top swings with clubface open and / or path out to in. By dropping the arms and club down at start of DOWN swing….it is possible to hit from inside and hit ball straight or with soft draw. Lovely!!❤
This is an excellent point made for me Coach! Yesterday, I pulled both a driver and iron shot which did not treat me well! I will definitely keep this point in mind from now on! Well Done and Thank You! I'm also going to archive this video for viewing as needed!
I’ll try this tomorrow. I’ve been hitting it low left for months 😒
"Exit Left" or "releasing left" which is a current fad being taught, is a sure fire way to to give you the pulls as well. I see many golfers doing this, when trying to hit a draw, and they wonder why they can't start the ball on the correct line…. so often lots of issues can be rooted in a flawed concept.
I have all my students release parallel down your wanted initial starting line(target line) which you are aligning your body parallel to. Always swing such that the swingplane alignment is the same as (parallel) the body alignment. Failing to do so will cause you much despair. Cheers Matt.
Fantastic lesson. Thanks
Fabulous explanation.
Again, Fantastic lesson. Please do another on this… Maybe with irons. Thanks.
Great video love it
That was me this week, Mr Pull. My normal draw went to crap. This should help
Why can I do this with irons but can't seem to do it consistently with driver?
