In my continuing coverage of documenting the mental strategies of the 2012 Canadian Tour (PGA Tour Canada) Champions, I spoke with Oshawa, Ontario’s Derek Gillespie.

Derek has been playing professional golf for 10 years and has a wealth of tour experience. He has two victories on the Canadian Tour (PGA Tour Canada), won the 2009 Big Break for a $100,000 payday and most recently won the Seaforth Country Classic Open with a final round 62.

Derek struggled for a couple of years when he felt like he was playing well but not getting the results he felt his game deserved. In our interview he talks about contacting Doug Smith and what they have worked on to get his mental game back on track.

Working with Doug has allowed him to get focused and clear about what it takes to be successful.

Interestingly, yoga has also taught Derek some mental skills and he elaborates on how it has contributed to better results in his golf game.

During the interview Derek shares a recent example of what can happen when you don’t exercise free will. His experience during the Monday qualifier for the Canadian Open was a disappointing mental effort where Derek allowed circumstances to control him rather than taking control of his mind and perspective.

Derek Gillespie admittedly has made his share of mistakes but he has been adding considerable focus and structure to get his game back into the winners circle. His Seaforth win proves his new approach is elevating his game.

Take a lesson from Derek Gillespie and hear what he has to say about the mental side of golf.
