Howey-In-The-Hills, Fla. – The Youngstown State men’s golf team sits in eighth place after the opening round of the Horizon League Golf Championships at the Mission Inn Resort’s El Campeon course.

YSU carded a 309 during Saturday’s opening round. Wright State leads with a 295 while Green Bay and IU Indy are four shots off the pace. YSU is just four shots back of fifth place in a tightly-contested field.

For the Penguins, Ryan Sam is the top individual sitting in 10th place with an opening round 75 (three over par). In 15th place is Jake Ryan who shot 76. Also for the Penguins, Jordan Kish is 24th with a 77 while Nolan Shilling is 42nd following an opening 81. Senior Jacob Sylak finished with an 86.

Sam had three birdies on the back nine to highlight his round. Ryan and Kish were second among the Penguins with two birdies apiece.

The second round of the championships is set for Easter Sunday. YSU’s first golfer set to tee off will be at 7:50 a.m.
