There’s a lot of debate out there on the roll of the arms in the golf swing. For a more natural, athletic, and effortless move, here’s my 2 cents… ***Learn the steps to Swing Like an Athlete HERE*** http://swinglikeanathlete.com
…in my opinion the arms should not be thought of as the power producer. To me it is a passive powering of the arms by the whole system (or body) that creates a true organic, athletic swing. Like we see in other sports, the hands and arms are not the sole producers of speed. They are more loose and springy, being stretched out for maximal speed. They are as I like to say, energized.
In this video I’ll walk you through how I like to see the arms managed (especially in transition) and how I teach my students. For many I work with, tension in the arms, and over-activation of the arms robs them of so much speed and power. Flow also goes out the window. The swing becomes completely unnatural, stiff, and jerky. But with the right roadmap and understanding of athletic movement and sequence in general, I truly believe anyone can find a more natural move. And finally Swing Like an Athlete! I do hope you enjoy this episode and I look forward to your feedback.

What's your take on the roll of the arms in the golf swing??

Great video! What’re you supposed to “feel” in your hands and arms tho? I feel like if you don’t use them they are too loose and unstable? I feel like I’d shank and miss the ball if I did this
How does this contrast with the idea, that a person can stand on one leg drill, but still create a lot of clubhead speed? Or the drill, where the person sits on the edge of a stool, their legs cannot even move, yet the arms & wrists create a lot of club head speed?
I think I have a feel for swinging with little tension in the arms. My problem is, when I get into the longer clubs, where the swing path shallows, that relaxed arm swing tends to throw my hands out (resulting from rotation), and I come over the top. I've seen a lot of videos that insist I need to start the swing by pulling the club straight down, but I have three problems with that: 1. I have to add tension to my arms to exercise that kind of control, 2. I don't know when the pressure shift to the front side is supposed to happen relative to this pull down, and 3. once the club starts in a direction on the swing, I find it impossible to change direction in the swing path. So how do I keep the driver on plane using this relaxed arms swing?
👍
Great video the way you explained the golf swing thanks
Thank you so much for posting this. I wish someone told me to swing that like from day one. I do now and it’s so much more enjoyable and consistent. My best shots of the day (including driver and 3 wood) feel like the effort of a 3/4 chip shot.

MILO'S "VIEWS TO THUMBS UP RATIO" IS AWFUL.
WE ARE LETTING HIM DOWN.
Can you think to your self left, right, left and hit keeping in mind the foot drill?
I meant step drill not foot
On the back swing my lead arm have moved up my body as my trail arm has folded and lifted away from my side. When I don’t consciously bring my arms back down and focus on turning my chest, my arms stay up, the whole arm, hand, club unit is thrown out and I hit the ball of the hosel or come over the top and pull the ball. How do I avoid this.
While everyone else is huffin and puffin, big daddy milo is a studmuffin. I always come back cause you have the knack ( as the others know JACK!) IT ISN'T HARD TO BE A BAD BARD!
Great video!
This is all nice.. but when I try this I can close the face.. it’s a shank every time
THE ALPHA 'WALKAWAY' move is on the first tee at the HOGAN-SNEAD SHELL match. Hogan with feet together drops the right foot back from target LINE, taking the (now lagging)club back AS the left leg is drawn targetward. NOW…the dance can proceed FLUIDLY. After your step back you're a touch overstabilized like a pitcher who just doesn't get enough DRIFT so he's TOO poised and doesn't eploit his INSTABILITY (per his right glute et al) SNEAD'S squat evinces a similar flaw within the matrix of his flow. Your motion is WORLD CLASS but HOGAN'S is otherworldly! I so appreciate this forum and esp the class that attends your efficacy! GODDABLESS!
I'm trying to go back to a pivot-driven swing after a couple of years of using an arms driven one. I had a sore back from using too little loft on the driver and needing to really extend to get it air-borne. What I will say that most don't understand is that the left shoulder has to go up and back to catapult the arms and club. I thing most don't understand that the handle has to go up and left in order for the club do go down and right.
Gary Player says if you get the backswing correct all you have to do is turn the left hip out of the way and the rest will follow. Sure seems like the old guys kept things pretty simple (not calling you an old guy Milo). The new teachers make the swing so confusing. I think this is one reason why people don’t want to play the game anymore. Keep up the good work
I feel like I tend to look like the frisbee or baseball bat swing in golf but the problem is that means my arms are being drug too far behind me. I look like I’m getting away from them and they can’t catch up.
Good Golf swings look like the arms are much closer to the body the whole downswing.
Very good video. I’ve done step drills before but this one, with your explanation of the feel, is very helpful. I know at the top of the backswing if I have turned off my arms because I become aware of the weight of the clubhead moving forward. It doesn’t take a lot of reps to convert to a regular swing where I fall toward my front foot in place of the step and feel the tension in my core. About the only conscious effort is to get the clubhead face oriented correctly during the takeaway.
Thanks Milo, sure do enjoy watching you swing a club
I enjoyed this immensely Milo, like travelling back in time to the days of 'Golfletics' 😉
