In practice our coaches would blow the whistle mid play and have everyone freeze. Then coach would ask the QB. Whos open? Regardless of the progression. He then would have us run it again and before we did. he would tell the QB.. take a snapshot in your mind. and find the open man. We'd run it again and someone else would be open. but he would see which ones and get them the ball. and then coach would tell the kid good job. hell he even did that during covering drills. Aaron sees the field and not the progression. That's a reference for guys who cant see the field. Guys that can play like Peyton and Favre could dismiss everything coaches told them and just play football. Peyton would know pre snap who would be open before he even snapped the ball. and its why you seen him lock in on guys way too often which became a hamstring in his game that kept getting tugged on. Sean Lee double int. one for six. So there is a bad side to not respecting the playbook or coaches too.
