Having strong fundamentals is crucial in golf, and understanding how to grip the club is arguably the most important of them all! In this video, I demonstrate the different ways to grip the club for both the long and short game, as well as the types of shots you can expect to hit when you adjust your grip.

Here are all the ways I can help you with your golf:

  1. Grips
    I use
    The Grip Master
    Nice tackie grip
Hold the club so loosely knowing the club will not come out of your hand
    And making you swing slower

  2. Thanks for the attention on the length of the thumb Dan. I myself do overswing it and I have never heard any advice about the thumbs in any video’s online. Only last week a pro gave me the advice to tuck my thumb in a bit more but he didn’t go in debt about the reason for this.

  3. I use the overlapping grip but for some strange reason, for my short game, I switch to the baseball grip – it just feels much better that way.

  4. Every Friday I'm itching to see what's coming next from the brain of mr. Grieve! I only last year changed my grip to neutral but never realized until now my "long" thumb habit.. Excited to apply this to the range tomorrow!

  5. Dan has helped me shoot my lowest score in 50 years of playing. Nuff said. The interesting question is why. He has a unique talent to identify what you need to feel in order to make the change that is required. This is a different approach for many coaches who just tell you what you’re doing wrong.

  6. if you hit your ball to the left, move your hand to your left. if hitting your ball to the right, move your hand to the right. nicely said, counter intuitive at first.👍

  7. What an incredible video Dan. I've played golf for 50 years and nobody has ever explained this in this level of detail.

  8. This is pretty amazing content, I’ve never had someone explain the “why” behind the various grips before, and certainly not in this detail

  9. 30 minutes on the grip?! Let me get myself a cup of tea.
You, Dan, are an absolute master at sharing the fundamentals that we all need to get better at this game. Thanks.

  10. Dan, more great material. I can't wait until the snow melts this spring, maybe we can do a video lesson with me here in the States. That said, I watch a bit of TV golf when time allows and much talk about how to make the viewing experience better. Ever since I found your videos, I no longer wait to see the long swings of these tremendous athletes, things we could never do….I am constantly waiting for the camera to show the shots the pro's play around the greens. I now see their narrow stances, their 3 releases (really, you can now see it after knowing what to look for from your videos), the pace and length of their swings. I think something great for golf viewers would be for someone with your type of pedigree narrating short game shots. They do slow motion and tracing for full swings, it would be great if they had better camera angles, slowmo/tracing for the short shots and then video replay with an expert of your caliber. If not….oh well, my viewing experience has changed for the better, your videos, chipping off the mat in the garage, watching the pro's do what you preach, how can I not improve this year.

  11. Great vid Dan, thnx. If you have the time I would like to hear a little bit more of your reasoning around ball position and what adjustment you do depending on the situation. I mean you can do a release one with ball back or more forward. Do you adjust ball flight within the diffrent releases? Higher release one or is it only through the releases? Sometimes I see your students or even you being a little bit wider for a release one, is it only for achiving greater length? Thnx again, you´re a treasure.

  12. Amazing video. Wonderful insight from the best shortgame coach in the business. Thank you so much as always.
