Every shot from my round on the Mathern Course at Marriott St. Pierre Country Club, near Chepstow, Monmouthshire, on 6th June 2024. (Available in 4k!)
Having played the Old Course first thing, I’d hoped to get a second round of the day in and with the weather being fine and a free tee slot, I grabbed a quick bite to eat and headed out for my second 18 of the day at St Pierre.
It’s quickly obvious that the Mathern Course is very different from the Old Course. Shorter holes, several tighter fairways and most prevalent are the reens / streams that cross 11 of the 18 holes. I was lucky not to find one but they influence the way you play these holes, with a few of them being involving difficult club choices and “do I, don’t I” calls.
Battling my incumbent fade/slice made the course more difficult and was was doubly frustrating after driving the ball well earlier in the day. Still, I managed to scramble my way to a respectable score with one rather lucky birdie in there.
It was a little busier on the course than I like it to be which meant I felt a bit rushed at times, no fault there at all, but it detracted from my experience a little. Even with all the bunkers marked as GUR and the course still recovering from the winter with 3 temporary greens, it was in good shape with the greens consistent throughout, the fairways in good shape and the rough fair and not too deep.
It’s great value currently with green fees being only £15 – a real bargain for 18 holes nowadays. It’s the perfect companion to the Old Course with it being probably better suited to golfers that want amazing value for money and at this price point, it’s a steal 👍

15 pounds!? wow. Great chip in on 18.
Great course that! Greens in great condition as well
The bunkers at a lot of South Wales courses seem to be pretty abysmal at the moment, might be due to the 6 months of atrocious wet weather we've had.. or there's a shortage of sand funds 😂 The Mathern looks a beautiful course though, it's on my to play list 👍
Looks nice. I've never played there. Looks interesting. Good vlog.
Hi CJ, new golfer here. Just wondering why you do not use GPS?
There is no way that you cleared the reen on 14 with that fade drive…
great video
Played this course yesterday after watching your video. Lovely course and all the greens were open. Wondering if they have redesigned the course as my GPS watch was out with measurements on a few holes. As you say some hidden challenges. Will play again.
Love your vids CJ, in a country of madness they are a perfect relaxation, cheers👍🏌️🍺……what irons do you use by the way?
