Brinson Paolini cautions that too many golfers, especially beginners, don’t recognize the importance of pre-shot routine. Under the rules, you have 40 seconds to hit a shot. First, you must gather information while others are preparing to hit or hitting their shot. Then get a range of yardages to consider based firmness of greens and strategy. Evaluate wind, temperature and adrenaline level. Then decisions must be made on what club to hit, shot shape, and target. Pick the shot that’s easiest for you to love. Imagery should be quick, based on whether you learn through vision, hearing, or feel. Do a practice or programming swing. And then execute your swing. Limit swing thoughts to one on the backswing and one on the downswing. Remember to stay target focused since you can’t see your destination while over the ball. And if you’re frustrated afterward, let off steam in a reasonable way and leave it behind you after ten steps.
