Just played it ..beyond amazing… 360 views on every hole.. . is a special place
I’m from Halifax and Have played both courses four or five times . I agree with your statement “ date The Cliffs but marry The Links. That said , the final 4 at The Cliffs are an incredible run !
Rich people’s golf
I had the pleasure to work on building the dunes cottages. Also living 20 minutes down the road truly a beautiful spot
Both courses are unreal. Sad you missed Cape Breton’s best course though. The Highlands Links
My 2 favorite courses. My home.
Heading there in a week. So stoked. Thanks for this recap!
Heaven on Earth! Best golf, experience, and people. Been trying to convince my wife to move there and work there. Place is as pure as possible
The airport you couldn't remember is in Port Hawkesbury just as you would otherwise drive onto Cape Breton Island and it's about a 1 hour drive to Cabot from there. They accommodate many private aircraft there as well as at the islands main airport in Sydney which is about a 2 hour drive. Both drives are very scenic. The "big miss" on your trip was that you didn't also play Highland Links GC here on Cape Breton Island which is a Stanley Thompson design that has been rated the top public course in Canada many times over and could arguably rival the pure golf play experience at Cabot. We also have Bell Bay GC in Baddeck which was Canada's top new course when it was built and we have other spectacular championship courses at The Lakes in Ben Eoin (both have hosted PGA of Canada events) Le Portage GC in Cheticamp, Dundee GC…You get my point. We are blessed with great tracks on this little island!
Links is better than the Cliffs. Cliffs is not a true links course and 16 and 17 are the worst holes on the complex.
Cabot Cape Breton is very good, but the Lodge at Pebble Beach is the top experience, if money is no object. The 18th hole at Pebble Beach is arguably one of the prettiest holes on earth, let alone the best finishing hole in golf. The major criticism of Cabot Cape Breton is the same as the Bandon properties: magnificent courses, magnificent resort, but there is nothing else! In addition to Pebble Beach Golf Links, the resort also has sister courses Spyglass Hill and The Links at Spanish Bay, and all three courses are totally different from each other, each a unique experience on their own, and with the right connections you may have the option of Monterey Peninsula CC or even the venerable Cypress Point Club if you are that fortunate. The Monterey Peninsula has nowhere near as many courses as say, Scottsdale or Myrtle Beach, but a small collection of the best ones–quality over quantity; other courses to consider are Quail Lodge, Carmel Valley Ranch, Poppy Hills, Pasatiempo (in nearby Santa Cruz), and "the poor man's Pebble Beach," Pacific Grove muni links. Furthermore, aside from golf you can visit the lovely towns of Monterey, Pacific Grove or Carmel By-The-Sea, all of which are tourist destinations for a reason. Pebble Beach is no doubt the #1 golf destination in all of North and South Americas open to anyone–as long as they pay dearly for it.
If you're driving from the east coast, look at Fox Harb'r as a place to stay to shorten the drive. Another amazing resort, where Titleist just held a weekend event this past summer. Would be about 6 hours from Boston to Fox Harb'r, and then another 2.5 hours to Cabot. Also look up Highland Links, again about 2 hours from Cabot on the way back to the US. You'd play 3 of the top 10 courses in Canada. Cabot Cliffs is #1, Cabot Links is #3, Highland Links is #10, and Fox Harb'r probably in the top 50 overall and rising fast.
You could drive from Boston on Friday afternoon, sleep at Fox Harb'r, golf early there on Saturday. Drive to Cabot and play later there on Saturday. Play the other course Sunday morning, then drive 2 hours down to Highland Links on Sunday afternoon. Then find a place to stay along the Bay of Fundy, and do the 6 hours back to Boston on the Monday. Would be an world class long weekend golf trip with 72 holes of amazing golf and minimal drives on the day's you are playing.
