I totally agree. Proper course management is, "If you don't have a 75% chance of making the shot, stop, and reconsider." Play within your abilities and don't make a bad situation worse.
This is the level of short game I am aiming for this coming golf season in 2025 if I can get enough practice and playing. Background. Last year was my first year back after 13 years off. To say I was rusty is an understatement. I was nowhere near my old level of averaging around 90 and occasionally getting down below 85. I did make some progress despite an 8 week injury break mid summer. This coming year, I want to get the rest of the way back to 90, and start working down past 85.
I have strengths to rely on, and weaknesses to work around. My putting has always been good, and I feel I am already better than the 90 shooter level. Your recent green reading video looks potentially very helpful. And by the end of the year I finally started making some progress towards getting back to being able to drive the ball safely in play very reliably at around 170-180 yards. That's 90 golf level. I know, because I used to do it that way.
I don't get much distance, and probably never will. I've never hit driver more than 200 yards on average, and have never controlled it well enough to use it on tight holes. But I'm at least on the way to being able to use it on more open holes again. I've never been accurate enough to hit greens very consistently at full swing distance, but I'm making progress towards getting more consistent at 100 yards, and hope to extend that out a little farther next year.
But even so, I'm never likely to hit a lot of greens in regulation. So I need a sharper short game. Once I assemble the pieces of the game I started to display by late last year, and with a little polish and practice get back to 90, I figure the quickest way to get a little closer to 85 is to get acurate and consistent enough from 40 yards in to give myself an extra up and down or three per round. I don't expect to hit it stony all the time. But getting inside 15 feet from 40 yards and well inside 10 from 20-25, as you speak of here, would be very helpful. Plus I'll keep trying to get a bit more accurate into greens from 120 yards, and off the tee at around 200. Over time, hopefully both those numbers move out 10-20 yards. But for next year, the short game is likelier to produce quicker results. So that's my number one goal/focus.
Thank you for the targets to aim for.
Excellent video….well explained with data…thanks David.
Good psychology as well as technique . Well explained
David, your channel has become my favourite golf channel. Thanks man.
Essentially, when your approach shot misses by 30-40 yards, you’ve made a mistake and now you just need to focus on minimizing the damage by saving bogey.
A really good explanation on how understanding that realistic expectations for each shot is more important than the ambition of knocking every shot "stiff".
Enjoyed the walk through the different scenarios.
can you tell us the lofts of your wedges?
Thanks to your approach, method and philosophy I’m happier with my golf, more realistic and more productive. My son is 10 shots better than me, however last weekend I beat him on stapleford points! The beer on him never tasted better. We raised a toast to you.
David, A Great wee lesson/ tip !
Helping me so much.
Luv it!
Thanks, Merry Xmas

Excellent content! I'm focusing on short game this season to lower my hcp.
Thanks David…… Marry Christmas! And Thanks 4 the Gift!
Best takeaway here is that there is actually only a 20% chance of you (as a single digit player) getting it up and down in 2.
Stop talking. Play golf
David, I recently discovered your channel and I’m really enjoying it.
Question: Do you change your grip pressure on the short pitch shots?
Thanks for sharing your talents!
