  1. The inflexibility of some golf clubs is disappointing. Happens all the time. I called my local club to see if I could look around the facilities and play 9 holes as a one-ball, as I had just moved literally around the corner and wanted to see if it was the right club for me to join. The gold club said the only way I could visit was if I paid for a full 18, and paid for a two-ball.

It wasnt the weekend or a bank holiday, and they had plenty of tee times available.

  2. I think it’s nice that traditionalism is still observed in some places. But there are other options like public courses. I didn’t think golf is elitist anymore. Is snooker? The pros dress far more formally than any golfer. Suit and waistcoats!

  3. Dress codes have changed over years we use to wear suits woman can now wear now virtually nothing but have mercy if my shirt comes untucked

  4. Asking people to wear collared shirts, socks, shorts without cargo pockets seems extreme. How will they afford $300 Taylor Swift tickets, an $800 tattoo and a $7 latte?
I can go to any thrift store tomorrow and get a shirt, shorts, socks, hat and golf shoes for $25. Might even get lucky and find an Adidas hat.

  5. Always a pace of play thing. They're just protecting the field of members or paying guests.

  6. This seems like a UK thing. Golf here in America (at least on the west coast.) Everything has been become more casual. Ive been golfing since i was 5 or 6, so 1996ish. Golfing was actually very strict and stressful. The marshall was always on you for pace of play, even into my teens when I played highschool golf. I remember a tournament official coming up to me telling me the back of my polo was untucked. With golf spreading like wild fire, all of these rules are bad for business! Country clubs can kiss my ass btw. My father and all my relatives were members of Sharon Heights in California Bay Area. The old men would scoff at my Dad when they were paired with us and saw my Dad had brought his 10 year old son to play. I often beat those old rich wannabes. I live in San Diego now, I'm 33, I still dress to code because its engrained in me, but if teens or 20 year olds are getting shit for wearing joggers and a T-shirt, i always stick up for them.

  7. At a club I was a member at we used to play 2 clubs and a putter in 4 balls, we carried the clubs by hand, played 10 holes in under 1 hr 15 mins, if your quick then what's the issue ??

  8. Flying with clubs is so easy. A travel bag doesn’t cost much and it’s the same as checking a regular piece of luggage. I’m on 3 months in to playing and it’s been cold here in NJ so I’ve flown out to play in warm weather in Texas and I’m flying down to the Caribbean in 2 days. $60 for a travel bag is well worth it.

  9. I love how these fancy boys thinks regular people care if members are looking at them. “Ohhhh noooo the members are looking at me.” 😂😂😂 If they’re not a member of the club and they’re simply a paying patron just politely tell them they’ve sat in the wrong place or entered a barred area. Are you afraid to speak to people?

  10. Golf need to drop this crap. Why do you have to "dress up" to hit a ball in to the woods….its not a drag show. Imagine if we had to dress up to go grocery shopping: "sorry sir you can't enter wearing jeans, also you need your own bag"

  11. I went playing with brother in law and nephew, they put 2 sets in one back, one was left handed the other right. The pro wouldn’t let them play out of one bag, trying to get nephew into golf, I thought this was bad form. My brother in law got a refund for his round and went home and never played golf again… neither did.

  13. easy to find left handed clubs in Canada, but in this case i'd take a cart and rent right handed clubs but just use your mates clubs, it's stupid to say they can't share if they don't even have one set of left handed rentals.

  14. . . . I think mainly because they don't want to miss out on a rental set fee $$. The most shocking thing in this was to hear Rick at 3:18 say "golf cart" instead of buggy!

  15. Rick is low key a traditionalist talking about they had to pay their dues and how they would hold resentment if a new era golfer doesn’t have to tuck their shirt in. Cmon pal just make the game more accessible already. Too many petty rules

  16. Having a chuckle thinking back to some of the dumb rules we had to contend with, at some of the top (snooty) courses, from a New Zealand perspective.
To wear shorts it had to be knee length "walk" socks,
Then it went to crew length, with no advertising, eventually to 1/4 length again no advertising.
I'm sure there's some where no shows would get you thrown off the course.
For some reason it seemed like each of these course had an old retired Colonel or Wing Commander in a blazer and cravat hopping around enforcing the rules.
Thankfully most of it relaxed a lot

  17. Let's be honest. We all want golf accessible to more people so that courses and stores don't close. But none of us are out trying to recruit new players like a church wants new members. We know golf is not just a scorecard. A lot of new players don't know etiquette and/or care. Music blaring, loud cheers during backswing, divots and pitch marks unrepaired, and the 4some that hits 8 strokes per hole each and searching for probably 2 of them, for a miserable 5 hour round.

  18. I used to play at a 9 hole hotel course and I now play at a municipal. I've had, on separate occasions, my brother and my mate on the course with me and let them play a few holes using my clubs and without paying. My brother used to play and will likely get back into the game at some point, and my mate had never played before and I just let him knock a hybrid about to see if he enjoyed it. thoughts?

  19. Thank you Rick and Guy (or should that be Grant? Sorry Guy, felt like a right numpty when I realised my mistake 🤦) for answering my question! Some interesting discussion in the comments here, really thought provoking.

  20. On the dress code point the first time I went golf on the first tee an old guy snootly said why am I wearing jeans and I said its my first time and its cold what difference does it make what i wear, he said its not the correct clothing and it will affect your game.
To which i stepped up (I was part of a 4 ball) and bombed my driver down the rightside of the fairway out driving my friends and then looked at the guy and said that was pretty good aye 😅😅
Oh and i didnt have my own set of clubs it being my first time 😅

  21. As a golf course worker, 1. It’s because of pace of play. If golfer A is on the left side of the fairway, then golfer B can be hitting his ball while the other is finding their ball. 2. And I’ll be 100% honest, it’s money. The amount of money it takes to maintain a golf course is ridiculous. Fertilizer, sand, water, mowers, cart equipment, pay for the employees (which is hardly anything sadly) all costs money. Additionally, members and the average golfer want top notch conditions but get upset when they need to pay more.

  22. Honestly, if it's not a comp or your on holiday sharing a rental set shouldn't be an issue. This thing of 'it would make play longer' is crap – you're just pulling from the same bag, if anything it would streamline the game a lot more.

  23. Rules of golf say you CAN share clubs if you are playing partner format. A couple of years ago I took my son on the course where I am a member to try to get him into the game and we played a scramble, sharing clubs. Someone called the proshop to complain. The assistant pro came out with a spare bag and asked me to carry it for "appearances". I argued the point but accepted the bag anyway. He also said that the prohibition on sharing was listed in the local regulations on the scorecard. It actually wasn't.

  24. if two people are riding a cart together I think it's fine to share clubs. You're going to be driving to both balls regardless

  25. I booked a social 9 holes for today for work function with around 8 people. Club rang me last night and said they don't have enough clubs so we need to share. This was before I told them we're plplaying best ball anyway. Good to see they're being practical.
I also hate the 'etiquette' of playing. If it's not in the rules book, then it's not a rule!

  26. Get an extra bag and split the clubs between you. 2 golfers, 2 bags of clubs. Pay your fees and Go play. Who's gonna know?

  27. I can agree with not sharing clubs. If you want to play it's not hard at all to get a cheap set or borrow a set of clubs for the day. As for dress code, most of it has to go. As long as your ass isn't hanging out go out and have fun, it's a game and should be enjoyed. This of course is for the recreational side of things.

  28. Money. That’s it.

And as a lefty even if they have a left handed set. You almost don’t want to play with them they are in such bad condition and age.
