Great video Hannah …. I carry 9 to 10 clubs in my bag only and on occasions I'll carry 11 but that's an extra wedge depending on the course I play … having fewer clubs makes choosing for your shots easier and as you say bag doesn't weigh as much since I do carry my bag …. keep up the great work
Lots of information and golfing history Hannah👍. A video on wedges would be useful, being quite new to golf I haven’t got my head around the wedge terms of grind and bounce and why there are so many lofts now.
Great video! A video on wedge grinds would be really helpful.
Yes please. A wedge video! What the grinds and bounces are – how to you think about them differently – how would the bounce on your wedges influence which one you choose given the lie and the shot you want to make. All mine are ‘Versatile’ – 50, 54, 58. I do like them, but I only think about loft, and I suspect I’m missing something….
Great work good advice and excellent food for thought. Making me evaluate my current setup. Thank you. C’mon people subscribe.
Wedge guide please Hannah and great insight the history of golf clubs.
I would like to see the 14 max club rule updated and increased to 16 clubs , the rule was changed back in the 1930's and back then with the ball and clubs they played the average recreational golfer probably only drove the ball 180-200 yards and with 14 clubs the gaps are easily filled now these days I see recreational golfers hitting it 300 yards ( the younger athletic type or even me at 63 hitting it 260 – 275 yds ) it would be nice to have a few extra options some people might want a chipper , a high lofted extra wedge , 2 drivers , one more forgiving for those days you need the help , a long iron if you normally carry a hybrid or 7 wood a left-handed iron or a club to hit out of stoney areas so you don't wreck your iron to the set and I am sure the Golf club manufacturers would love the help in sales.
❇️ High compression golf ⛳️ balls like ProV1 etc require high swing speed > around the greens the ProVs are fantastic but if you are not hitting the tee shot and second shot good enough you are better off with a low compression golf ⛳️ ball ✅
what do you consider the most essential clubs if you don't want to carry 14 clubs?
Enjoying your vids.Funny tho;around here, everybody gets the same recommendations for putters and balls,no matter their game.Bettinardi,Scotty, and Pro V1..
Ha, speak for yourself. I’m not playing in any tournaments. I’ll carry my 17 clubs and be happy that.
I’m looking to reduce my bag next year, down to 10.
Great history lesson. You would have been my favorite 8th grade history teacher. 🤣 Putter fitting and trying out zero torque putters would be my recommendation. I play anywhere from 11 to 13 clubs. Took out the gap wedge, then the 3w and 9w for a low maintenance set-up.
Hi Hannah, would you please consider doing a video about grind and bounce on wedges. It's rather nebulous on manufacturer's sites. They tell you what conditions the grind are best suited for (hard vs softer conditions) but what are the differences specifically. Regarding bounce, when is a higher bounce best utilized vs a cleaner sharper leading edge. I would be very interested. Thank you for your consideration.
Excellent info … You’re looking quite posh, too, Hannah! 👍🏽
Cool little golf history lesson, thanks Hannah 🤓
Absolutely love your new series of videos. A wedge video, similar to what jameswhiteside5213 recommended, would be of considerable interest.
I use Dave Pelz's 3×4 system. I've recorded how far I carry my PW, GW, SW, and LW with half, 3/4, and full swings. So, assuming there aren't mitigating factors (lie, hazards, etc.), I have 12 distances to choose from.
Because the USGA and R&A are going to ban my use of a stand-up putter, I have had to switch back to a traditional putter. (I can continue to use my stand-up putter–a Bloodline–but I can't use it as it was designed, to stand it next to the ball and walk behind to see the line.) So….I went to PXG and got fitted for an Alan putter. It is the most accurate putter I've ever played. And because I'd gotten used to the heavier swing weight of the Bloodline (I used it for years), we added heavier screws to the Alan to get it feeling good.
I've gone back and forth between the tour ball and the almost-tour ball. The TP5 vs. the Tour Response, for example. I really can't tell much difference in performance. The TP5 is a bit shorter off the club, but it's tighter around the greens. Either way, I love using the stripe.
I hit my TM Mini almost as far as my recently-fitted driver. My total distance with the driver is 260 and my total with the Mini is 245-250. This has gotten more obvious as my swing speed has slowed with age. There will come a time (soon?) when the Mini is even longer than the traditional driver (PXG Black Ops).
I want every single club I have: Driver, Mini, 3-Hybrid, 4-iron through LW, and Putter. They're all gapped well and I use each and every one. If I had to lose one, it would be the LW, but I prefer it out of the sand. And as I said, there will soon be a time when the driver and the Mini are about the same in distance (with the Mini being WAY more accurate).
I don't care about weight. I used to when I carried all the time–I'd even play a light bag (the Sun Mountain 2.5). But a few years ago I got the MGI Zip Navigator. So, I still walk everywhere I'm allowed to, but now I have an electric trolley (with remote) doing my carrying for me. I can't tell you how liberating it is to walk down the fairway and not only NOT CARRY a bag, but not even having to PUSH one.
Hannah Holden, you continue to produce interesting videos. Thank you.
Another good video, hope you get to 20K subscribers quickly, you deserve it..
Helpful and informative… I just wonder if all club fittings are unbiased my expis that you are directed to a certain brand which may or natnot be ideal
As per the comments below Hannah, please do a video on the various grinds. I have never fully understood it, no matter who is explaining (I might be the common denominator there). For many years played a Vokey 60 with only 4 degrees of bounce, and it could perform magic on tight lies. Could never figure out if it was the club or I just learnt to hit it.
Hi Hannah, great videos. Which microphone do you use on your videos? The sound is always nice and clear and I'm looking at getting something I can use.
❤
Just been to have my putter fitting , actually ended up keeping the spider , did have a new grip and an inch chopped off , also was advised to use something like a chrome soft , so let’s see how these new bits can help me lower my handicap
I would love to see a fairway wood episode. A few years ago, I remember you reviewed the Cobra LTDx line, which had quite small heads, but surprised you with their ease of use. Since then fairway woods have kept getting bigger. I do not believe that this works well out of any type of semi serious rough. This is not relevant for 3 wood, but is very important for club golfers for 5,7,9 woods. What balance to have at the top end of the bag, if you do carry 4 wedges, has also become more complicated and important.
Wow, you covered a lot of subjects there! Really informative. I was especially interested in the golf ball segment, as i now play TP5 and TP5X, as a senior with low swing speed. I based that decision on some analysis done by Golf WRX, I think, but EVERY other channel seems to say the TP5 is wrong for me!
Love the little giggles in your talking too, haha!
The number of clubs were decreased as the authorities were concerned about de-skilling the game. How about if players were only allowed one wedge? Then they have to play different shots with that wedge…
I enjoyed this discussion. Thank you for continuing to discuss the philosophy of course management and equipment needs.
And here I am being a weekend warrior with 4 wedges that just have 5* gapping and hoping that I don't chunk or blade each of them.
44* Pw, 49* Gw, 54* Sw and a scary 60* Lw.
Another no nonsense equipment video, a wedge video would be helpful.
I had a litter fit to find there was a number of things that benefited, length weight, face weighted illusory movement during putting well worth the effort. The k you Hannah
Slight math correction. 1-9 irons, + 4 woods + a wedge + a putter = 15! It's OK. I know you didn't mean to do that. What was actually happening, as I understand it, was players went one of three ways. Driver-Brassie-Spoon in their woods, 1-9 in their irons, one of those fancy flanged niblicks that Gene Sarazen was popularizing, and a putter, (which was sometimes numbered 10 in some sets, especially if someone didn't carry a wedge).
Or, if they didn't like the driving iron, they'd drop that, start their irons with the midiron (or #2) in numbered sets, and carry a 4th wood, which was easier to hit than a driving iron and filled the distance gap between spoon and midiron better. Some called that 4th wood a cleek, some called it a 4 spoon as woods got numbered as well, but increasingly people just called it a 4 wood.
Or someone might not carry one of those funny wedge things, and just carry 4 traditional play clubs (woods) and 10 traditional green clubs (irons), putter included. This became less common, though, partly because of the increasing popularity of the wedge, and partly because those truly skilled enough to hit a driving iron were also generally skilled enough to hit it almost as far as a cleek, so why bother carrying both? This of course assumed that players were self aware enough to know whether they could really hit a driving iron, or whether they were carrying it because they thought they could hit it. But we all know golfers never carry clubs they can't hit just because they think they can, right?😉
Actually, except for the addition of the lob wedge, which is higher in loft than traditional sand wedges, the lofts at the bottom of our bags aren't all that different. We just give them different names. Standard 52 degree gap wedges are the same loft as old pitching wedges. Pitching wedges are now so strong, almost traditional 8 iron in strength, that we could probably do with 2 wedges between pitching wedge and sand wedge. Most sets stretch loft gaps to 5 or 6 degrees to cover that range instead, and/or strengthen to sand wedge to 54 or 55 degrees instead of 56, since a 58 degree lob wedge works really well out of sand as well, if it has enough bounce.
Great video … very good point on bringing less clubs … could you deep dive more on this one? Just recently I removed my 5 iron (same as 9wood but more difficult) and 3wood … mostly same distance of 7 wood.
Thank you for a helpful video.
I have subscribed.
A video for golfers with a swing speed of 65 to 75 miles per hour would be useful for some senior golfers.
eg. which hybrids & suitable lofts, also fairway woods & most suitable balls for seniors.
thanks for all the info…
Great videos I’m new to golf and find you and Rick Shields to be both great players and explanations of the game would really like a wedge video! And maybe even trick specific to the sand wedge! 🏖️. 🏌️♂️ find myself on the beach a lot my friend call me Hasselhoff 😂
Great video
Great video Hannah, a question regarding golf balls, now the winter is here and the air is cold and damp, would you consider changing your golf ball to a "softer" model ? or should we just stay with the ball we usually🤔 use ???
