[Music] [Music] hello and welcome to the tennis podcast live from Wimbledon on day three of the Championships I’m kathern whiter this is Matt Roberts this is David law and this is our crowd absolute di hards over there oh my goodness me they’ve used a bin as a prop that was absolutely epic they’re getting kicked out of the of the premises because it not for that because of the time not for that they’re getting kicked out because it is 10:51 p.m. we are 9 minutes before curfew yanic sinner has just got the job done in the nick of time in four sets over Matteo bertini David has hotfooted it from the commentary Booth are you high on mer bartini David like 12 months ago bit Yeah I am a bit and uh and it was so close to being a fifth set which I don’t think they would have got in the way things were I mean they they’d only got what just half an hour to play a fifth set if if that have gone to it and I think Andrew Cotter was reporting on the BBC TV commentary that they were going to call it at at two sets all not even start the that would be the right call you know I didn’t I had really processed it in the moments but but actually that makes total sense to me and uh a moment of reverence please for the Blessed curfew well absolutely you know it’s what was so lovely is that that you both were able to alert me that I don’t know exactly what point it was that they they announced to the hill Henman Hill people who were staying on there that those that wanted to come and fill the remaining seats that weren’t filled could just come on in and I mean they just came flooding into to to cend to court it they were running down there David it was so special people were just giddily screaming Reggie was one of them it was brilliant what a great choice that a moment of real Common Sense we got a load of empty seats here a load of people on the hill that will’ll just make their day week month and year and in they came and it was it was free and it was full for the last hour and that there been I think the first change of ends in the four set so 2-1 and and you you you mentioned that that announcement had gone out and I I told our listeners you know just we’re just watching the entrance to this court right now and sure enough in they came and they just turned that into a into an event that that that last 45 minutes and the players loved it and you know you just got this sense that you were kind of getting the best of what Mata bartini’s got now because that still wasn’t bertini at his best that wasn’t the bartini who reached the final here you know he he played well and how was it different well it to me and to Koko vanderway who was in our commentary box and Pat cash it was just that those reactions it it’s just that match toughness that the sort of thing that you can only get by playing loads and loads of matches where you when you’ve got the big shot on your racket that you have to make to turn a match he wasn’t making them and and if you actually look at the match as a whole he’s the guy who went one love up mini break in the first set tie break you know normally Mata bertini gets in a position like that you expect him to just serve his way to to to the set and he didn’t now part of that tianic sinner what a returner he is by the way that that gave me memories of 92 Wimbledon watching Agassi returning Goran ivanovich’s serve and things like that okay not marauding into the net every time but just a handy coordination Novak jovic Andy Murray trying to return milash Ric’s 147 mph serve in that final which managed to do it was it was reminiscent of that and then second set bertini I think he was 4-2 up and he lost the set on a tie break he wins the third set 62 he goes the break up in the fourth set and I mean it’s two things at the same time it’s bertini just not having that match toughness and tightness and maybe maybe he’s not quite as good as he used to be he’s had all his injuries he is only 28 but maybe he’s not quite what he was and then the sinner who who was really rattled when he was broken in that for set he was fuming you know and and he’ lost his his mental sort of strength for a few seconds his focus is a better word and then in the change over he got it back it it was it was an extraordinary feat he broke back immediately and then he was bang on it and it was it was a really good fun end but I think I still always thought that sinner as the guy who’s winning all the matches and hasn’t been injured and who is a better player anyway ultimately will find a way and what he did and it was question would it went five as I said it would the other night or four as you said Katherine and you were right and we said that Sinner’s Hala tournament had been perfect preparation for Wimbledon and I think we saw that tonight because that was very reminiscent of some of the matches that he had in Hala in terms of you know he ended up there winning a final set tie break against stru he ended up beating herat in two tie breaks in the final and he’s needed three tie breaks to today to get through barini like he’s just got these reps in recently he is match tough in a way that bartini isn’t quite at the moment and yeah it was really impressed that sin stepped up in in the big moments and honestly like beating bertini at Wimbledon I know it’s not maybe Peak bertini but beating him at Wimbledon has been such a barometer over the last four or five years of players who will go on to do really well in this tournament you know alarz last year won the title jovic beat him in the Final feder in 2019 ended up reaching the final so you know this just sets cner up perfectly I think you know he’s got out of that without having to be you know on the brink of defeat or anything like that but he’s been really tested his his match toughness has been further sharpened and uh yeah like big moment for for this draw quite frankly that that Yanik sinner comes through comes through that one mimat manovic for Yanik sin next good player but hard to see him hard to see him troubling Yanik C I mean it’s a similar game style but C is just World better these days and he beats Talon grepor today who has pushed cner a couple of times this year he’s won the you know he of won the first set against him he obviously pushed verev in in Paris I don’t I don’t expect Greeks bort to be able to close someone out like sinner given what we saw at R garos but I think that would have been a tougher matchup wise you know big strong flat hitter of the ball yeah I think um look as you say Kam K manovic can be an incredible ball Striker but it just feels like that kind of back and forth PlayStation tennis like sin’s sin’s going to win those sorts of rallies had a thought okay well let’s stick with the men’s matches then that we saw today before coming on to talk about the women just before I do that um I’m wearing pretty much everything they sell in the Wimbledon shop tonight so if I mean this is it this is this is everything that’s how cold it is um I’m actually using David Gile as a hand warmer and can really uh speak to its warming properties versatile quilted Quil it’s a really versatile item folks and they do they do layering well in The Wimbledon shop so uh yeah if you’re coming on site do head over to the The Wimbledon shop in court one it’s excellent and if you’re not coming on site uh go to the wimon shop online and they have global Shipping and they have everything on there and you too can get yourself a handw warmer SL Gile item uh so sinner through of course he’s scheduled on paper to meet Carlos alarz in the semi-finals yet again for the second slam running before that Carlos alarz will take on Francis TFO in the third round here that match was set up today of course a repeat of the US Open semi-final that they played a couple of years ago actually on paper tifo had the more comfortable win today over borich on court 18 behind us here than than Carlos alcarez did against Alexander vukic but I don’t know about you guys I don’t read too much into alcaraz not having an easy time not dismissing opponents in early rounds of slams I just don’t think he’s that kind of player he’s too loose he’s too he has too much fun out there like there was I don’t think there was ever really a moment of Je in this I did miss the moment that vukic was serving for the first set because I was in the lunch queue so maybe I’m wrong about this and that was a moment of terrible Jeopardy for alarz but I just don’t read too much into the fact that this on paper looked perhaps tighter than you might think with reigning defending Champion against totally unheralded vukich yeah I think it was a scrappy first set from alcarez uh he was actually up a break but then got broken twice and vukic ended up serving for the set as you said alas played a very good dominant tie break though and that that settled him because sets two and three I I think he was much more in control and I think those two sets were pretty comfortable it was only really the first set that was any kind of problem for alarz actually bumped into uh gir Nathan who is literally writing a book about Carlos alcarez so he’s always a great person to to speak to I will be reading that book I will be reading the hell out of that book heck of the writer isn’t he yes in fact he was telling me about a piece that he wrote uh on Defector last night he he’d been out watching cord peshi P car he he watched it all um you know the whole thing he stood through the whole thing and watched it and you know I was asking him about that and and he said that he he’d watched cord serving before then and was like Wow cord is a great server and then he comes up against Perry and peshi Perry car and he wrote in his piece that cord serve is like an apple falling from a tree and peshi pera’s serve is like a meor falling from the cosmos that’s good yeah so this is a good guy to bump into because he’s awesome and um he said that actually he’s kind of bored watching sets two and three of alcar which is not a sensation that you normally get but we kind of said it’s kind of the evolution the development that needs to come you know okay he had a Topsy Turvy first set but he made sure it was just the first set and then from then on it was just high quality efficient um and yeah I think I think sets him up really well and look as as well as Tifa has done here to to come back from two sets down against arnaldi and then beat shich today I think that’s a absolutely fine match up for Carlos Al I really want to Hype that match but I think it would be disingenous I think recent history would surely tell you that um Francis TFO is not the player he was at the US Open of a couple of years ago when we were so high on that match I remember us all getting chance to watch that together Courtside uh in in New York it was that was really one of the highlights of the year that as a tennis watching experience the very best of tifo in New York crowd going wild him feeding off them alaras obviously feeding off everything because that’s who he is and them the two of them kind of getting a buzz out of facing one another and pushing each other to limits but we have not seen that Francis diafa for a long long time and what I would say is I’m very encouraged by the fact that he won through a best of five set match uh the other day from two sets to love down and then followed it up I didn’t see the match with chich today and and I I I don’t necessarily think chich is playing at his highest level and this isn’t his best surfice but still you know he took he’s taken care of him and set up the match and look TFO is a Vibes guy isn’t he he he this is what he lives for and this is what he’s been denied in recent months and years because he just hasn’t been playing very well so he hasn’t been able to get on these stages and so you know I kind of feel a little bit like with the the sin bartini I don’t think he’s necessarily the same degree of threat that bertini was because of bartin’s Comfort on the service and his history here but he’s a guy trying to come back so I think TFO could have have some moments in that match but I don’t think he will be a huge threat if he loses does alcaraz join the clowns WhatsApp group clowns unite against Francis WhatsApp group I mean The more I’ve thought about it that I mean you told me about that that quote that what was it tifo said that I’ve been losing to clowns in the same sentence he said I I’ve been too complacent in taking the sport for granted and then described everyone he’s been losing to as as clowns which isight confused messaging I would say about humility extraordinary thing for a player to say because they don’t tend to say that stuff out loud about they might think it but they don’t tend to say it about their colleagues their Rivals their contemporaries I mean I did my mind did go to I’m not saying he’s a clan but my mind went to Dennis shapovalov because of the the the match that the two of them had had in Paris where they fell out you know and and TFO smashed that ball that hit T shaal in the face and shaal was very outspoken about it afterwards and really didn’t like it and I sort of thought well they’ve got beef do you think he’s the um the admin of the WhatsApp group is that what you’re suggest he’s adding people do you want to join do you want to be in I think if you yeah I think if you lose you go into the WhatsApp group but I think the I think the next person to beat Al is just put on like a clown mask or something afterwards yeah but like the next person to beat T right yeah should do that should say would you like to wear this yeah and he’s probably got to take that on the chin yeah like I’m I’m I’m all for people saying that stuff but you have got to take the consequences haven’t you and I’m sure there will be some in the locker room quite interesting how how much the barge and the live chat when when you told us that hated it most people were really wound up by it and thought you shouldn’t be saying that and my first reaction was that’s funny um I I think two things can be true right I think it’s funny and disrespectful and if I if I was someone hadd lost to I would be pissed off yeah if yeah I would too but I’m not one so I definitely think we could be people that he could lose to him David if yeah I think so the circumstances were right um Carlos alr’s press conference today not a huge amount to report other than bless him he’s he’s trying to use his phone less and go to bed earlier aren’t we all m he said I’m trying to respect the hours of sleep and I thought superhumans they’re just like us um so yeah just just a nice little nice little moment stop the scrolling yeah if he’s got any tips yeah yeah how often do you think his phone’s going on do not disturb not often I don’t think definitely not while he was in ibea right Daniel Mev was first on Center Court today the nightmare scheduling assignment for him uh he was taken into the trenches by Alexandre Müller 6776 6475 two underarms serves from Müller today moment for medev where he didn’t know what the score was in the first set tie break he sat down thinking he had lost the set and it was only 63 he said I went a little bit crazy in the first set tie break my favorite thing about that was the way the camera then just panned to the two jeels in his box Savar and seon they were just laughing at him like what are you doing like how have you forgotten that a tiebreak is to seven or do you not know what the score is and it was awkward because they only then had to play one extra point Mev lost it so you had to going to sit back down again and it was kind of an insight into the state of mind that he was in and it carried over into the second set because he immediately went through love down like he was in trouble in this match I think like a lot of people around here thought he was going out right and it looked like yeah it was kind of like is that even that big a shock you know kind of David you sat down at lunch and said did no one pick this like that seems a bit of an oversight because maybe we should have seen this coming and I think he did pretty well actually to turn that ship around he really knuckled down today and played some disciplined tennis when he could easily have lost Focus yeah he definitely did what he needed to but he feels at the moment there for the taking for somebody who’s playing well enough and probably somebody who is sufficiently experienced you know cuz with all respect to to Mullet you know the I remember when he was setting a bit up we were sitting there and I did kind of think maybe that’s his spell in a match a lot of these players at that level you tend to see have a a hot spell and actually is that your normal level can you keep that up I don’t I’m not convinced and medev usually beats those people eventually a best of five sets so I think it’s going to take someone good but I’m not convinced by medev he has stuff next Yan Leonard Stu that’s tough he he good enough I think so could he be the one yeah I I I I haven’t seen a that much of stuff on grass I was think you know he’s he’s good on grass the classic idea of the big server who doesn’t mind coming to the net should be should be good at it but you know I’m mindful of of people like Andy rodig who say well it’s not only about having a big serve you got to have good footwork and all these things now stuff has shown himself to be brilliant on the clay of Madrid hasn’t he um and and various other places but I do think he’s a threat because he’s going to bring it and I and I mean whether whether he will stare down the moment if he gets in sight of Victory is another matter because one thing with meddev is he doesn’t have make you earn it if you’re if you’re if you’re pushing him and you have a chance to beat him actually Landing The Knockout blow is is difficult but I do think he’s a threat and and there’s potentially dim I think in in the round after that isn’t there I don’t think we’re seeing Med in the quarterfinals yeah I I I tend to agree I think it’s going to take a good performance to beat him yeah but you’re right there there are players lurking there that should have a level good enough to beat what he’s showing so far he seemed pretty pretty buoyant in press he talked um talked a lot about the Olympics today confirmed that he absolutely intends to play the Olympics and he’s hyped about it Daniel meev is an Olympics guy I didn’t realize how much of an Olympics guy he is is he said it was a very easy decision for him to play he said he loved the atmosphere in Tokyo there was no there was right there were no crowds and I remember Daniel meev having a truly horrible time he threatened to die on the court due to the heat oh yes he he said to the Umpire he wanted to die on the court maybe he meant amongst like I think I think he did like it was a fantastic experience he was saying but I felt like saying well if you liked that denil you really are in for a treat and he said look if if I was thinking strictly about my my solo career it would be better to go to Canada and play there but he said but I’m 40 I want to be able to look back and be proud of having played he said hopefully three three Olympics he talked about La 2028 as well and he said he he’s playing doubles here isn’t he to try and prepare for the Olympics because he said I’ve probably got a better chance of winning a medal in in doubles than I do in singles on Clay so oh right yes of course yeah he’s into it work B work on his volleys I was going to say that doesn’t say much for how much he rates himself in singles on Clay CU I’ve not seen meev Play Good doubles no I think he’s quite a bad doubles player yeah yeah but love that he’s an Olympics guy really eny enjoyed that especially so because I think there’s a slight awkwardness around the topic of the Olympics with the Russian players you know it is a different Olympic experience for them not representing their country um you know being there as neutral athletes but I think that really does speak to the experience that you get as an athlete in the village and and I can imagine medev he’s so curious isn’t he and he I can imagine him wanting to have conversations with with other athletes and and learn from them and I think he would be he’d be someone who would really enjoy that environment so yeah like really pleased to hear all that now speaking of underarm serves Müller did did two to to medev today and look it’s a good tactic against Daniel Mev given his return position isn’t it uh less of a good tactic for dear old Auto veronin today an underarm serve from him break point down for all in the fifth set what are the words Matt well I’m afraid I don’t know the Finnish for I sha myself I’ll take it in Spanish words uted initially by by Alejandro davidovich faka who I think did it at like 87 in a fifth set tie break last year against um was that her catch yes yeah so it’s a it’s a bad moment for Oto veronin isn’t it playing Tommy Paul um he went on to win and really dug himself out of trouble he was in trouble oh he du himself did he have a break in the dad fifth set he had break points you know Paul was down um and I have to say veronin has had a hell of a Wimbledon um he saved match points four of them in the first round of qualifying and the second round of qualifying one through the third round as well to get into the main draw and then between that third round qualifying win in his first match here he went back home for his grandfather’s funeral um that was reporting by John wory that I I learned that today and was back here in the main draw and leading Tommy Paul in this match and in a wide open section of the draw was a really big match for Tommy Paul you know coming in as as the Queen’s Champion I think a lot of people have pened him in to the quarters here to to meet Carlos like so I’m impressed that Paul managed to come through cuz Vietnam was playing extremely well uh Paul was really enjoying the atmosphere on on the court there today and yeah like honestly that that underarm serve potentially good prep for Tommy Paul because he’s got Alexander bublick next yeah he’s really good at underarm serves though like he he he doesn’t he’s not a panic at for all in the fifth and do something weird underarm sered guy he’s a serve four in a game yeah which is a bit weird it’s his own brand of weird but it’s funny yeah it’s it’s question like Paul is fast like he going to have to be a hell of an underarm serve even I think for bu like he’ll have to I wonder whether that factors into bu’s decision making or whether he’s just this is who I am I do this or does he think well he’s a lumbering so and so I can definitely drop shot him on the serve or does he think oh Paul’s quick won’t bother I suppose you’re not always doing an underarm serve just for that point necessarily maybe it’s to just plant some doubt in the returner’s mind and get them thinking and guessing and a bit off balance and try and disrupt them so I suppose there’s there’s that element but yeah like I do tend to think on grass like a big first serve you know AO and’s got a 135 mph first serve it’s probably going to be more effective than just randomly doing an underarm surf break point down in the fifth like most of the time it’s not a great idea even if generally I do I do support underarm servs yeah tough way to end what sounds like a a tough week for for auto veronin um Casper roode’s Grass Court season has come to an end Monday to Wednesday it lasted a three-day working week three-day working month for Casper uh and had Tuesday off yeah yeah well he’s got a lot more time off now lost to Fabio forini yeah I mean look first of all well done Fabio he’s you know he’s he’s retiring isn’t he he’s he’s giving giving it up after he’s had a really well interesting career I mean you know he’s had some incredible results he beat Rafael Nadal at the US Open and I think the Australian Open you know he’s had some incredible results over the years um and he’s behaved abominably at times as well um he’s got this peroxide blond hair which is quite quite statement quite an interesting stage of his career and Life to try all that hair for the first time late 30s father but go for it Fabio and but you know the fact is that’s two two good wins that he’s had and and so fair play to him but still if you Casper rude if you’re a fan of Casper Rouge you’re not happy with that result are you no and I thought he played pretty well in the opening opening round I was less worried about him today than I had been a couple of days ago against against Alex Bol but and he I mean he very nearly lost his straight sets he he he ended up rude really fighting back and it became quite a battle he he seemed pretty pleased with his grasscourt season and and we have to factor in his illness after the French Open you know I don’t think I don’t think this was call it a season cuz that is AB those are my words okay okay um all right I’ll give him that so yeah I mean on the basis of Monday progress for sure he looked more comfortable but it it was it was one match um okay we’ve arrived at sort of the the sad portion of the the men’s results today sad David gal has has come full circle we of course saw him on Thursday when we went to qualifying and did our show from there he’ just lost in the final round of qualifying he was slumped over a picnic table and then we got the news that he’d come in as a lucky loser replacing Andy Murray well hey for for Davi GFA you’ve got to be very hard-hearted to not want David gofan to be sad to not not want David gfan to be sad well today I’m afraid to tell you that he lost from Five Love up in the fifth set to Thomas mahat and PS what a journey he’s been on over the last 5 days but there’s no dressing this is there at it it’s a choke can I say a choke five love yeah yeah oh yeah and even before that he’s two sets and a breakup you know like losing from that position is bad enough cool sport is it um quite how he ended up being five love up in the final set was a bit of a mystery to me because M had all the momentum and was playing really well and then I sort of looked away and he was five left down I thought what has happened there but then I couldn’t take my eyes off it um and yeah like Goan double folded to give up his his his his big Advantage um and and and that made it five all and just generally it was like it was like just a slow trickle of unforced errors and no like no like purpose to close it out it was just it was like it was letting kind of letting it happened there wasn’t a lot of there wasn’t a lot of emotion from him it just it yeah it was a choke it was a choke and by the time it got to a final set tie break mahat was playing the tennis that we know he’s capable of and you know spreading the court coming in knocking off volleys like really good stuff stuff that got him back into the match and disappeared at the start of the fifth set but that is brutal for gotha like you think getting in as a as a lucky losers you know such a such such a good thing but it’s it’s kind of ended up giving him a just a double dose of misery like that is I’ve actually got actually today’s newsletter stat is is about like losing from Five Love up and let me tell you it’s not happened a lot in in a fifth set at a slam brutal Felix or aim lost from two sets and and four match points up to thanasi konaki it’s another match that that took place today and yesterday like points were all yesterday yeah so you know sleeping on you know wanting to have finished the match anyway but the fact that he had four match points proba he made it even worse and yeah kakis has has suddenly become a guy who has great endurance and wins a load of five set matches he did it at the French Open as well didn’t he from two sets to love down a couple of them I think back to back yeah and and this is the guy who for the last couple of years with the most extreme version being the 4:00 in the morning loss from two sets in the break up against Andy Murray he’s had a lot of those early on so he’s turned that around yeah brutal for Felix though yeah absolutely brutal Chris Eubanks lost today remember him quarterfinalist from a year ago lost to cont Alise meekly as well I think scor line wise was straight sets wasn’t it think back 12 months ago we were thinking God imagine Eubanks bringing this form into the US Open he’s going to be the man and it just just has not happened at All Sport it’s it underlines it yeah and and Dan Evans a straight set Sloss for him today to Alejandro toil who’s obviously a great player and Evans had that horrible injury at at Queens just a couple of weeks ago so this isn’t it isn’t a shock it’s just yet more evidence of just how difficult it is to turn around a slump yeah when you’re in one yeah I mean that’s what I tried to get from him in the press conference is you know are you confident that you can find a solution to this what is your plan what what do you think you can do because I mean you know he’s been injured he he he he then let us in really on the depths of of how sad he was that he’d been in what he regarded as the best form of his career at the end of last year I remember that match so well in Vienna where he he’s just broken Francis TFO serve he’s playing like a dream and then his Cal popped and he was so looking forward to the Davis Cup finals you know and and trying to build on that and he he’d of course won that title in the summer I think was it San Diego he won or Washington Washington of course yeah he played awesome yeah and he he’d had some great moments he had pushed ALR in that match at the US Open but ever since that he’s just not been able to build any think and and he keeps he’s won what three or four matches all year lost a dozen um or more and and it’s difficult to know how you rebuild but he’s got to get this injury right first and then back to the drawing board I suppose tough really really tough and it is just such a brutal sport let’s talk about something more positive let’s move on to the women’s draw let’s talk about Emma CaRu yeah she was so good today versus Le safe to say Elise Merton’s not the test that she has been in the past but still 61 62 an hour and 15 minutes if if Monday was winning ugly Matt then this was pretty stunning from memicu really it was a joy actually um the roof was on on on court one and the crowd was so engaged and it just gave you it just uplifted you in the way that emanu has done at times in the past and you know against Mertens they they’re similar in that they both prefer their backhand to their forehand you the backhand is the shot that they can lean on and flatten out and hit winners the forehand you know it’s kind of always a big test for aduku whether she can hit through it and we we saw on in in the first round that she struggled to do that um but today against Merton she took the lead and once she had that lead she then just expressed herself you know she just opened her shoulders and played such free tennis like all the shots that she possesses were on display you know she was hitting winners off both Wings serving really well there was a fantastic drop volley at one point she she was chasing down Drop shots in a way that she wasn’t doing the other day she was doing that much more confidently and the crowd just went with her and soared with her and oh it was an absolute Joy watching her play like that um there was a moment where one of our one of our legendary listeners Alex who is who got the photo with Carlos alz on on Center Court last year Alex and Dan and they were part of the crowd they were generating quite a lot of noise onto bins over there at the top of the show as well and Alex was here today and he’s in the mix t-shirt and there was a and he was just across from me on on court one watching this and there was a moment where ranu hit a backhand winner up the line and he stood up and looked at me and went across his T-shirt in the mix ranu like and what did you say I laughed but like that was the feeling that you that you got watching that it was like wow this this level is so good I agree with you Merton’s not the test that that she was maybe two or three years ago I don’t think she’s been in the best form or the best Fitness either so we have to we have to bear that in mind but it was just a a really enjoyable hour and a half out there watching Ruku kind of just display all that she can on a tennis court she she’s doing a bit of a um Nick curios John Kane Arena thing with court one she said in the in her first answer in the on court interview and in her first answer in the press conference Court one is my favorite Court yeah now I think if she requests one she will get it from from Wimbledon I don’t know but that’s my that’s my feeling um to a certain point to up to a certain point yes for sure there will come a point where if she’s still in the tournament everybody you know other other stakeholders with big says will want her on Center and and something we’ll give but I think for the time being if she wants Court one she’ll she’ll probably get it and she’s she’s pretty clear that she wants Court one which is which is interesting isn’t it and she ideally she wants caught one under the roof yeah she she talks about loving the roof being on today from an atmosphere perspective she said it was like a concert hall in there you know all of the sound and the Acoustics being trapped inside but but I think inside tennis suits her game really well you know look at the contrast in her form between indoor clay and outdoor clay you know night and day um I personally would like the weather to improve Y and it’s all about us folks yeah much as I’m enjoying amu’s great tennis would like it to be a little bit warmer and less wet but you know uh swings and roundabouts I suppose she she quoted Rafael Nadal’s if if if not in the accent but um she quoted that famous line from from Nadal in her press conference uh after the match being asked to talk about her next round against Maria zakary who is obviously the player she beat in the semi-finals of the US Open in 2021 that’s their one previous meeting and it’s difficult to know how much to look into that when looking ahead to this match what fascinates me is both in reality who is the underdog and who is the overdog here and also in each of their heads who is the underdog because I think both of them desperately want to think that they’re the underdog yeah and I think they both there’s enough reason for them both to think that I think personally that ricano is the favorite like I’ve said I think rakan is going deep here um but uh yeah I think zakary wants to feel like the underdog and so she can come out swinging and not worry whether she’s actually able to do that in the moment I don’t know but she certainly wasn’t able to do it when she was clearly the favorite in New York that time um and she and it’s been a an ongoing problem for her um but you know I I I heard from um Naomi Cav who’s part part of the BBC team and her brother coaches um Emma ranu that the moment she was informed that uh or asked by Andy Murray to play mixed doubles with her that she was so euphoric about it that she slept better than she has in goodness knows how long she slept like 10 hours she was just high on this news and thing David and that that performance if I’m really excited I can go for 13 I’ve never done that if Andy Murray offed me to play mixed doubles with him I’d be sleeping for a week well Emir kind of clearly a person after to your own heart and uh she she just Omi said that that performance obviously there were tactics involved you got to be playing well but actually that the playing well came from being so happy and so high on everything and uh and so yeah I mean I just think that was uh so different to the other day when suddenly she she was supposed to beat this player it was on Center Court she wasn’t feeling the ball it’s kind of what Jack Draper needs to come out and do is to just feel the ball and feel better and rakano when she’s on is some player it’s it’s funny because I think Raku is quite a fearsome front runner yes a really good front runner and Zachary’s the opposite she plays her best when she’s behind in the school so those two things colliding is interesting is interesting I think yeah she was great on serve today Emar in particular so yeah David’s broken the news there that I’m sure you you all know already Mandy ruk candy Randy take your pick folks David’s David is not into any of it there was someone on on the barge who um who perhaps quite cruy said that they should be a and e given their injury records oh it’s tough David likes RNR no no the only one I lik emem sorry Eminem that um our good friend Robin Daniels who we used to work with at Queens messaged to me H because I think that’s clever the others I’m like just call because you get both of their full names in there why you have to do any of it why can’t you just call them Emma ricano and Andy Murray people like to do I would like to Second what Hannah’s saying and for now once and for all veto Randy that’s off that that isn’t happening um f she said I couldn’t say no it’s a gift and an honor Matthew cameraman Matthew Who’s Back Tonight by the way that’s that’s why that’s why we all look so well lit um and why we’re on air miraculously uh Matthew gave you a laugh there thank you Matthew um she said I couldn’t say no it’s a gift and an honor that he’s asked me I hope I can learn something she said it it took her all of 10 seconds to decide um whether to say yes she said some things are bigger than just tennis and she also talked about remembering and she must have been doing some math she would have been nineish um when she watched Andy marray and Laur Robson win mixed double silver together at the Olympics here in 2012 and she said that was a really vivid memory for her and she said that was the first time that she even allowed it to cross her imagination that she might one day get to play mix doubles with Andy Murray so I’m so pleased that he’s done that I I I I love that word gift because I know it would be great for him he’s doing it because he wants to do it and he wants to taste wimbl in and Center Court as much as he possibly can but he could have picked anyone and I think he knows what this will mean to emanu and potentially four emanu and it does feel like a bit of a gift to the coming generation the current generation I I really liked that that word from her there was a less good moment in her press conference when she was asked if she planned to vote in the general election tomorrow and she sort of laughed at the prospect which was a it wasn’t a great moment no no the Democracy side a side a weary sigh in that moment but you know tennis players is they live in bubbles don’t they they totally live in bubbles it’s a demanding selfish sport um it’s not surprising but it is you know it was a very Stark Stark reminder of that do you know who else was awesome today Bianca andru oh yes we watched that a lot together tell me about this we were up here it was down there wasn’t it it fantastic talk about a gift scheduling this match here that was that was a real gift and David and I stood exactly where we sit right now looking over this barrier I’m watching Bianca rrcu be awesome 6376 against Linda Osa who is tough I thought she would be tricky on a on a grass called Flat big hitter I said it to you while we were watching David for me she when she’s on and I know she has been so rarely over the past six years and so inconsistently over the past six years and that’s largely due to injury and mental health concerns and and all the the rest of it all of which you can hear about in the interview that that we did with uh with banr rescu and is is up on our feed if you want to check it out but when she’s on for me she’s the Carlos alcar of the WTA in terms of her toolkit and her excitement and that feeling of oh my God what’s she going to do what is she going to do I love that feeling when I’m watching a tennis match and she gives it to me in the same way that kis alcaras does and she does have the power to obviously not alcaras esque power and not Sabal lenar esque power but she was matching nosova for power today and Nosa is considered a big hitter in the game she can hold her own in terms of power but she also has this huge toolkit that she’s carrying around and Nosa had none of that today I thought she was Sublime it was a joy well when we were watching watching Emma rakano earlier today quite a few people said that’s the best they’ve seen rakano play since she won the US Open and I and I felt the same and probably I felt the same about andrescu in terms of how well she played today and obviously she hasn’t played very much at all since she won the US Open and that’s five years ago because of all the injuries and the pandemic and everything else but but today was a reminder of just what she can do to you and Nosa was just getting tied up in knots really there were sometimes there were these short sliced return on the forehand keeping it low and then the next ball was looped moonball to the back of the court and then nosov was just trying to get the thing back in some deep fashion and then suddenly she’s run around it and swiped a forand winner So you you’re getting three shot combinations that are all different and you just can see that no nosova is only playing that if she comes up against maybe oner at her best someone like like that that’s probably the closest example in women’s tennis but because andrescu has won a grand slam and because she doesn’t have many other memories I mean obviously she has some some very bad experiences that that she talked to us about and there are demons there and she’s had a tough time but the the joy is back she seems to be okay physically I mean I really am touching wood here because that’s all that matters she can be fit and firing she’s as good as anybody in in terms of what she can do and she’s still only exploring how her game works at the moment and trying the best way to package it and I’m and I certainly I’m not feeling that this is a player who’s ready to go deep here yet personally but when we get well just because I think it’s too early in the comeback I think she’s going to run into somebody who’s just a bit too on it you think that tennis see for me the question is whether she can keep that tennis up that tennis is good enough to cope with coming up against well I agree with you but I don’t see that tennis being necessarily repeatable all the way through the tournament I think that it’s possible but but I would be surprised at this stage I I I look more to if she stays fit imagine what she’ll be like when she gets to New York there’s a where she’s won before there’s a select number of topics where Katherine is going to be the more upbeat positive potentially delusional one look I don’t think andrescu is winning Wimbledon this year but I do I do think that tennis can cope with anything if she can keep it up even if she dropped drops a bit of a level now she she’s got Jasmine palini next oh well that’s a great test particularly given that they played at the French they did play at the French and it was close it was really close I don’t know how much to read into that match cuz it was played in the driving rain at about 4° in mud and I will never forget that there was a moment actually today watching andreski noso where it started to spit with rain and they they andrescu kind of queried it which I would be too with with her injury record I mean I think it would have been legit for anyone anyone to query query it on grass but they said no you know we’ll carry on as it is but you know we are monitoring the situation I just how am I watching thean and rescu play tennis in the rain again what was going on but what what really impressed me actually and all the shot selection is I mean it’s it’s so enjoyable to watch for a start and she makes makes all these people feel stuff because she’s letting you in how she feels and they were responding to her and there was a little cluster of people with Canadian flags and she went and had selfies with them at the end it was all lovely but in the second set I mean she’s playing a level of tennis that really should have been winning 63 63 and yet she’s not taken her chances NOS of a fair play She’s when she when she was in H she would dig herself out with some big hitting but suddenly you got to sort of 65 in the in the set and it’s tight and you I was waiting for andrescu to start missing a few she just didn’t she just kept on the rally tolerance was there if she was pushed and then she would find a way to turn the tables and the point that she finished it with the mo I mean I decided I would put the camera on Catherine whilst it was match point to see a reaction and Catherine was jumped out of her skin when when there was this full blooded serve and andrescu hit a a middled backhand return winner down the line it was it was just awesome and uh yeah it’s she’s a great watch if nothing else she’s a wonderful watch and I I think if she’s stays fit she’s going to win another big title and it ain’t going to be that long into the future it was just one of those where I was like well if if you don’t like this then you don’t like tennis you know which is how I feel watching watching Carlos alarz so resu palini feed it into my veins in uh in a couple of days time we’ll be seeing Donna veic in a couple of days time she continues her under the radar progress straight sets for her against Erica Andrea and she’s got diani esta for a place in the second week yeah and I watched the end of Yu’s win over vvar graa up on the balcony here with Pam Shriver coach of donovic doing some scouting of the match and it’s actually going to be a kind of potentially a super coach against super coach because Marian Barty was in Diana yr’s box did we know that well I saw the I saw the you know it’s quite high up here I couldn’t quite make out I saw the sort of figure of Bartley and thought that looks like Marian Bartley and then she was picked out on the on the TV Camera apparently as well um and like you know just obviously reached the Australian Open semi-final this year and she she did very well at the end of that tie break which was which was what I saw with Pam uh because she had a 5-1 lead initially a strema and then gucha got it back but then they sort of changed sides I think 75 and youra knuckled down and and won that match very impressively and that’s you know big Power that yrsa possesses and that that is always tricky to come up against um the one other thing I should say from this match YCO graa very awkward end to it ver graa originally Russian has has nationalized as French in the last year and Pam and I were talking like is there going to be a handshake here you know because your Str is from Ukraine and there were not handshakes between Ukrainian and Russian players and it was it was just extremely awkward because graa went up to the net and yusta went up to the net as well as though she was going to shake hands and then kind of at the last moment decided against it and obviously we were up high so we couldn’t exactly see what was what was exactly happening between the players but there was real confusion um and it I think just a reminder that you know we we’ve talked about that a lot in the past and we’re not talking about it quite so much anymore but that is still a big factor in in these players lives and in and and in these matches as well particularly between Russian and or you know sort of I think your stka still views grucha as as Russian so it’s all complicated and but yeah like we haven’t seen that or talked about that much recently and it really s of stood out to me as wow this is this is an awkward moment yeah absolutely so veic against Y strar in a couple of days time ul and neire one today just mentioning that for the connoisseurs because obviously she is a future Wimbledon champion as anointed by Hannah how long ago was that now couple of years yeah yeah so it could be coming anytime just just watch out for her is all I’m saying um that was actually only a first round match because she was held over from yesterday uh but she only dropped three games and now she plays elina’s falina tomorrow so watch this space for that Coco goof continues her incredibly Serene progress she beat anchored tooni today and now faces Brit son cartel who’s won five matches in a row qualified and won won two mainor matches here so an incredible tournament already for her but David you watched you watch this match today Coco go is looking the business yeah I mean it was such an uneventful match and that’s that’s really the story of the way kak goof is taking care of business I mean it’s it wasn’t a a particularly perilous one on paper you know you expect her to win it but the way she just sort of comes out and just efficiently wins with no drama whatsoever um one-sided score lines and I mean there were still forehand errors in there you know quite a few of them in the in the parts that that I was commentating on but she just ignores them I mean you know obviously the score line generally speaking everything else went well but the other thing is she was serving a few down at 124 milph to Wards the end it’s it’s it’s something else to watch court level which is where our court one commentary box is yeah it was the fastest serve of the women’s tournament today that she hit and I don’t know like it wasn’t that long ago that she wasn’t putting up scores like that like every time you watched Coco golf it was kind of what’s going to happen here kind of a struggle absolutely couple of months ago before Rome I really think Rome was a big turning point in terms of her finding her game her serve was a disaster in Rome but the rest of her game was really good and yeah like she’s made very Serene progress through through two rounds which as you would expect on paper but it just hasn’t always been the case and I think there’s actually been a slight shift in the way she’s talking Coco go like I think generally she’s pretty harsh on herself but I think during during that period where her game was in a rough State she was kind of doing her best in press conferences to talk her game up you know and be positive about it now after this performance she’s kind of gone back to being kind of her own harshest CR you know her own harshest critic because she said it could have been cleaner it could have been cleaner there were still the odd era here or there that that she didn’t expect of herself and I think that just shows that her game now is in a much better State than it was a few months ago and she’s got probably higher expectations again as much as anyone can can say that they’re always focusing on the next match and of course that is what they do that is the most important she knows that Arena sabalenka has gone from from her half of the draw she knows this is an opportunity and I’m pretty I’m pretty bullish that I think she’s I think she’s going to grab it I’m really impressed with with golf Ju Just a word um I had a chat with um Jeff Tango the former player who’s part of the BBC team today as well and he he knows Brad Gilbert pretty well and he said that they they are being a little bit more um ambitious with the forehand now if you think back to what they did with it a year ago it was mainly protecting it it was often flighting hbls in defensive positions over that summer following the first round loss at Wimbledon and and getting through stuff there and and I think the rally ball is something that they feel that they has more on it now and can be can be used in a more offensive way not necessarily going for broke but the way we’ve seen her have to try to against eant but just general heaviness and and maybe a little bit more confidence interesting very interesting uh we lost namia Saka today uh to very classy performance from from Emma Navaro she’s she’s tough to beat she was awesome yeah she she she really was it’s a heavy ball she hits doesn’t doesn’t give you much it feels like she’s she’s hitting big but there’s margin and beautiful mover on grass really cover the court well I thought to and that was a St contrast I thought and it was paor from from aaka today just 59 minutes and I was a little worried at the start of her press conference that this was a really tough body blow for aaka and it in the opening moments it felt a little like her press conferences of of old um and you’ve been sort of anxious about her mental state and anxious about how she would cope with questions but but it it turned out okay I think she’s okay but this is definitely the most disappointed I’ve seen her since her comeback you know this wasn’t okay I’m I’m gutted with the result but I’m taking lots of positives from this this was I expected a lot more from this Wimbledon and she said she said she’s really proud of how she committed to the grass this season and gutted that it’s come to nothing and that’s kind of some up her season doesn’t it she’s really committed to this comeback playing far more than she ever did and it hasn’t amounted to much of note yet I still believe that it will but I just and I again I think she will I just hope she keeps pouring as much into it you know as a long a long range bet and she’s prepared to wait for the return because I do think it’s coming but um but it is it’s it’s a bit of a waiting game um Schneider next for Emma novaro who beat Sloan Stevens today Schneider is continuing her form from from bad hurg big time and they met in the semi-finals of bad hurg and it was a tight match but but Schneider won it in three and yeah she’s won seven matches in a row Schneider which is you know kind of it’s what you need to win a slam pretty good she’s she’s done five and two and yeah like absolutely crushed Stevens today off the back of a really impressive win that we spoke about the other day against that’s a sneaky good third round I think Navaro Schneider like two inform players yeah really into that that’ll be on Friday in terms of Tomorrow we start on Center Court with Jacob Fernley against Novak jovic good good luck Jacob um eagon against Petra martic is second on and third on it is Rinky hi Jakarta and John Pierce up against Andy and Jamie Murray good ticket good ticket on court number one it’s a britfest ktie Bolter against Harriet Dart then Jack Draper against Camari and finally Alexander zov up against Marcus Geron there really interesting schedule on there because for some people those backtack all British matches that’s the dream ticket isn’t it I think for a lot of people on there they’ll be absolutely thrilled your parents have tickets on court one for tomorrow Matt yeah not thrilled they’re in fact they’re probably listening to this on the way to wimon because they won’t be listening live now it’s way past their bedtime they’ve got a big day tomorrow to get ready for hello Mom and Dad hello Neil and Pat I hope you have a a an unexpectedly good day tomorrow should I hype it oh yeah I think it’ll be great I think those two matches look particularly Bolter Dart I’m into that me too I know all British matches that like it can suck the atmosphere a bit that is a concern but yeah who do they cheer for that’s about the crowd they cheering for a British player if for a home crowd is a great thing as as it is in any Nation that’s hosting a big tournament but one against another it’s a difficult one isn’t it um but yes Neil and Pat there is aggro historically between Bolter and dart there was a a very frosty handshake between them in Nottingham last year which ended with Bolter tapping her Temple uh towards her team and dart taking great offense at that and thinking it was directed her in some way and Bolter saying I do that in every match wasn’t directed at you uh and so there have been a number of those sort of you know slightly awkward moments between the two um and then we have Draper against norri and I wonder whether norri might just want to sort of remind everybody that hold on a minute I haven’t gone away yet you know I was in a semi-final here about you maybe give me a bit of Hy and Jack dra is the coming young man so is that good enough Pat is excited about seeing Jack Draper is that not right that is correct yeah and mostly they’re excited about seeing the sun because the last few tennis events they’ve been to it’s been gloomy is that going to happen I think it is the forecast is decent for tomorrow are they going to stay and rattle some bins for us in the evening they might actually because um they’re actually staying in London overnight because Friday they’re going to see The Killers oh look what a week look don’t get the violins out for my mom and dad because the order of play they’re having a great time yeah that all sounds absolutely marvelous for them uh CAU two tomorrow her catch against Arta kicks things off at 11:00 a.m. then Gail Mor against Stan rinka to finish Mor is two sets love up their five all in the third then it is onra B against Robin Montgomery and Fin finally Elena reaker against Lara segment oh those are different energies different energies did you say artif at 11 o’ yes I did okay I’ll be there uh xia Muna and Alex De Manor open up Court three then Jessica Pula Daniel Collins she uh she wrapped up her win over claraa talson today it was held over from yesterday and then Emil Rus ofori against stepanos sits a pass um he’s not really happening marisi but I I know that he can play on grass I’ve seen it at Queens I’ve seen him be good on grass there is a world in which that is tough for sit to pass tomorrow I don’t know if that world is coming our way but we’ll see I’ve said it Madison Keys is on court 12 grigor dimitrov and Jerry Shang uh Caroline wasaki and Lea Fernandez are last on and Taylor Fritz and arur rinesh are third on now I just wanted to highlight this match because it was Fritz against rinder Kesh at the French Open last year that elicited this show in the most interesting Taylor Fritz has ever been he was a legend that night an absolute Legend and rinda KES has had things to say David excellent this via k mo of leip on Twitter Renda kesa said the atmosphere will be quieter than at the French Open last year and he won’t cry as much he whed a bit saying it was too noisy I hold no grudge against him but he was wrong if he thought the French crowd would send him kisses in between points I want them to play in New York oh yes yeah great I hold no grug but yeah it’s fantastic yeah I just more of this Taylor get it tattooed on your finger get shush tattooed on there let’s watch that after this yeah it was so good do you remember for his next match we we went out on court specifically to watch him come on to court and get booed yeah and didn’t disappoint was carrying the French Open for a few days Taylor more of that Taylor please uh okay well that’s tomorrow on court 12 will be back tomorrow at the end of play it’s going to be brilliant folks uh I’m looking forward to tomorrow’s order of play embracing myself for some Andy Murray emotions and I’m sure all of you are as well we’ll be accompanied for all of it by Maverick our lovely Wimbledon mascot we of course have our shows at wooden last year he thinks I’m famous you are you are famous Brendan Brendan mcale like Christina male exactly yes and Brendan there’s a Brendan that works for the ATP I knew you were going to say that well I knew you didn’t have one so there you go we spent too much time p d do you have a Brandon yeah let know I got a I woke up to a text from my dad this morning that simply said krie Melville yes I’ve had that email from from a very helpful listener although I think the spelling was wrong okay it was a different spelling I believe so we weren’t wrong I think I would have come up with that yeah I wouldn’t and finally we have Brian Rogers in Switz Brian hello Brian like Brian gotfried whose forehand apparently is similar to Matt’s as according to no to Matt fman who I hit with on Sunday just before the tournament started and he goes how did you end up with a forehand from the 80s he because you you grew up in the era of Nadal and and yet you’re hitting a close stance for and like Brian gotfried and I was like did he have a good forehand and he was like oh it’s super nice but doesn’t make any sense that’s a giveth and taketh away compliment is it and then we asked Pam and she described Brian got Freed’s forehand as decent okay mine is not I’d probably be taking that Pam I really am taking that Brian Shelton yes back to Brian’s father of Ben and this is okay Brian Baker remember him yes very good who came back from horrific injuries and still managed to do pretty well and Switzerland like losing to us in the football on Saturday Future Fame come on Jude yes Jude sort yourself out Mera was here today and federa is is here tomorrow I believe Roger feder it’s good good you can never you can never be you never would be too clear you think the center got British crowd might boo him no I don’t Roger federa yeah for being you know like switzland against England well they didn’t they cheered for him against Andy multiple times so no I don’t think they will do I’m not encouraging it I’m just asking um maybe we’ll ask him to come on the podcast tomorrow do tune in tomorrow to find out if Roger has joined us you just never know David that you just never know so do tune in tomorrow please hit that like like And subscribe button if you do like and want to subscribe to what we’re watching we do now need to get a guest so that we can at least do a Roger feder uh folks yeah please do hit like And subscribe uh subscribe to the newsletter as well that’s where you can get Matt stat it’s where you can get the resumption of King of the naties momentarily uh suspended due to ill health back on today two rounds no only one round the the double round will occur later in the tournament okay fine do you want to know whether Matthews got it right or not yes he has got it right ites on it was very impressive so annoying watching Matthew work look at him smiling away yeah we’ve missed you Matthew we’re glad to have you back and we’ll be back tomorrow shortly after the Clos of play on the show courts whenever that might be shortly after Andy Murray and Jamie Murray have played doubles on Center Court if that’s the last match of the day if they’re still going on court one we’ll wait for that it’s a Movable Feast folks but uh we will be here look out across our social media channels for exact timings but you know where we’ll be and uh hopefully you’ll know when as well and we can’t wait and we will speak to you and see you then

  1. Thanks for your Brit bantering but please leave out the personalities jibes. Allude to friction between players but give the details a miss I suggest (Boulter v Dart). I am looking for on-court highs and lows. 🙂

  2. Carlos Alcaraz of the WTA , 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

  3. Osaka is a victim a little bit of the random luck (bad luck) of being unseeded. Swiatek in round two of Roland Garros, another seed in the second round here. Not much time to play into some form with a couple of rounds of easier opponents. I think she will get there with time and if she gets back into the top 30 she will certainly make things easier for herself with a seeding.

  4. Unless the Russian/Belarus players have come out and said they are hostile to Putin, no one should shake their hands!

  5. Day 3 was a f***ing fiasco except Fabio Fognini's win over Casper Ruud. Carlos Alcaraz's grunting antics are beyond horrible & Jannik Sinner plays well but he's such a boring bot. Both in personality & game.

  6. Ok – so I know I will be critizied for critizing Coco's draw but for goodness sake her draw is a total joke. R1 Q, R2 Q, R3 Q…in the meantime, look at Rybakina's or Swiatek's opponents. Please, no need to mention that Coco is just lucky. I am her fan but not a fan of unfair and ridiculous system.

  7. Love you three.

All well spoken and thoughtful in different ways.
Top quality content ❤ thank you for your excellent journalism ❤

  8. How Maria Sakkari could be not underdog playing Raducanu at Wimbledon? 😉 Even taking under consideration the crowd support for Raducanu she is a favourite. I am happy because it would be for sure interesting match 🙂
