[Music] thrilling finish at the rocket mortgage this to force a playoff for AE batia eorting his third career Victory but instead it’s a three putt and a solo second finish excuse me buta with that bogey does fall into a multiple player tie for two a footnote to Cam Davis your winner at the rocket morgage his second career Victory and second career win at the rocket mortgage post round coverage of the rocket mortgage classic is presented by service now the AI platform for business transformation he is CBS Senior Golf writer Kyle Porter in with his thoughts on what is a transformative day here in the life of Cam Davis heartbreak for OA batia and that’s where I want to begin so many opportunities but Stuck in Neutral from about whole 8 on did have an early bogey his first of the week what did you make of Sunday as a whole for batia as it does come to a head there with that final Miss poot well I I thought his final round was was kind of em emblematic of a lot of guys final rounds and that it didn’t seem like anybody wanted to go get it the guys that were trying to go get it were the guys from further back right like like Min woy and and some different players like that so uh it’s been you know I I think it’s easy if you look at this tournament in a vacuum for AE you would say Ah that’s a that’s a huge disappointment that’s that’s going to kind of spin him in the wrong direction but the trajectory is good right because last week he loses Travelers and has an even worse Sunday so he he’s actually moving in the right direction toward winning um you know a bigger event he obviously won Texas open earlier this year I don’t think he’s somebody that you can label as oh doesn’t get it done doesn’t win the big one he’s just 22 years old right and and so I think if you look at it big picture you’re like man he really is moving in the right direction but it’s going to be tough for him uh to look at I believe Trevor emman just said on the broadcast his his first three put I believe of the week I haven’t double checked that but uh that that’s a tough one to swallow if you’re going into uh to finish up this event yeah certainly trending since missing a cut at the Charles Schwab RBC was not the Finish he’s looking for but t22 at the memorial t16 at the US Open T5 at The Travelers and now T2 here at the rocket mortgage only one place to go for baa who in your words is trending in the right direction but we’ll see the fragility of Youth if he can bounce back from what we just saw here on the 72 hole the moment does belong here to Cam Davis and I don’t know if it’s a moment that he nor we EXP Ed he even said it to Amanda balonis after the round from where he was just a few weeks ago he is a different player right now if you look at where he’s been trending I guess the only way to ask it is where did this come from for Cam Davis well he’s a different player he’s also a different player on this golf course in general Joe you know this is this is a place where I mean he he hasn’t played great golf this year but he gets back to Detroit golf club and gets his second win of his career and like you said second PGA Tour win and and both of them coming at this golf tournament you know we we talk a lot about how there are horses for courses there are guys at different courses for whatever reason uh It just fits what they do it fits how they like to look at a course or whatever the case might be and that seems to be true of Cam Davis I I actually thought Cam Davis played pretty well on Sunday his his 70 his two his score doesn’t necessarily reflect it missed a lot of putts that could have fallen could have shot 66 I thought he played a pretty solid round of golf and didn’t get a lot out of it um so in some ways he kind of he kind of stepped up and met the moment uh even though some of the putts didn’t fall and he kind of it wasn’t a back door win because I don’t know that everybody else really fell away uh but it was in the sense of he didn’t have to go shoot 65 to do it so uh kind of a weird and you even saw it on his face there he was almost uh resigned or surprised to win the golf tournament and that’s sort of how it felt watching it as well on this tour you take him any way you can get him it’s a second for Cam Davis but the cams were sort of drafting off each other all week long and then one player who did fall to the Wayside I’d love to hear your thoughts on Cameron Young’s Sunday the putter escaped him the driver spotty at best and then you saw the frustrations bubble to the surface for a guy who’s still efforting that first career win on tour KP if not now then when for cam young this really seemed to be his opportunity as you said on a Sunday with everybody stuck and neutral yeah it was interesting I was looking this up earlier today and and cam Young’s played 69 events now on the PJ tour and and has not won one and you know he’s been the best player in the world over the last 2 and a half years that hasn’t won uh worldwide uh I went back to the start of 2022 and in terms of Strokes gained uh it’s him and then you have to go all the way down to Denny McCarthy who is not anywhere close to cam Young’s level I I think that my takeway obviously the two Bogies in the last three holes is painful but I you know I think sometimes you have to have a sense of um not humor but you have to you have to you have to have some levity in the moment as you’re trying to close out this these events Camy young doesn’t have any Lev levity at all he doesn’t look like he’s enjoying himself uh on the golf course and sometimes that is the most important thing you can do when you make a bad bogey you get a bra bad break you break your driver whatever whatever has just happened to you you have to have a little levity whether it’s brought about by your caddy or generated internally or or what however you need to do it you got to bring it about and camon just doesn’t have that right now it’s almost like he’s squeezing the thing so tight and trying to squeeze a win out of it and uh to date it hasn’t happened yet in his career Kyle Porter offering thoughts here at the rocket mortgage not cam young Cam Davis walking away the winner this Sunday on tour thank you KP the conversation continues each and every week on the first cut podcast Kyle Porter Rick giman taking you under the ropes and into the action each and every week round by round Recaps on the first cut podcast download subscribe and enjoy today and for more we head out to the super Tower where CBS Sports lead analyst is standing by Trevor imman with his thoughts on a Sunday that’s decided late by a three putt it is Cam Davis walking away the winner you never want to see it go down like that on the 72 hole for anybody but things certainly align for Cam Davis in more ways than one where did this come from not on form heading into this tournament yeah sure didn’t what a finish that was moose incredible stuff and and cam just gave a brilliant interview to Amanda explaining how a few weeks ago he was so down in the dumps about his game and uh how his form was and started working with some people a bit more on the mental side he said last week he saw a spark but not enough to think that something like this was coming and then out of the blue he gets win number two is this game crazy or what win number two at this place the emotion the narratives they write themselves out here on tour and we appreciate you always putting words to it but hard to put words to what we saw there from AE batia on the 72nd hole looking at a long bid to win it and in the end it’s a three put to not even Force the playoff we’ve seen him obviously Trend in the right direction but let’s stay on the mental side what needs to be done here by this player in his early 20s he’s already seen one go in seen two victories to his name but to make this be not a detrimental moment but a learning experience for batia yeah look it’s going to sting for a little while there’s no doubt about that I felt like he was in control really not just today but for the whole weekend uh but he has so many positive things that he can fall back on uh brilliant play from him throughout the season he’s already had two wins on the PGA tour he’s inside the top 30 in the world rankings that was before this High finish so he’s going to be getting even better than that he’s inside the top 15 in the FedEx Cup he’s in the Open Championship coming in a few weeks for the first time in his career so he has a lot of stuff still to look forward to so I don’t see this as a massive massive uh issue for him going forward he will bounce back quickly and maybe even be better for it you know every time you put yourself in these situations you learn a little bit more about yourself and this is something he’s going to be able to draw on down the line so I’m not too worried about AE he is a phenomenal Talent certainly is right in the thick of it a week ago at Travelers and here a T2 finish in Detroit oxe was looking for his third career win instead Davis gets his second and cam young still efforting his first I’m just interested in your thoughts on all that was this Sunday for Cameron young it seemed like the perfect day for him to go out and get that first Victory everybody a bit Stuck in Neutral what do you take away from this Sunday and all the emotion in it for young yeah look he was frustrated out there really the whole second nine uh disappointed with what happened on 14 you know he’s one of the best drivers of the ball in the world and he gets to a par five hits a crook a t- shot missed a bunch of t- shots to the left and put a little extra pressure on that driver shaft as he was leaning into it and cracked it and uh you know in one bad mistake one mental mistake he threw away his weapon that’s what he’s known for he’s known for hitting it long he’s known for being a great driver of the ball and just with that lapse of concentration and focus he gave away the tournament and uh I think that’s what he’s going to learn from going forward showed a bit too much frustration look it’s tough it’s tough to win you put a lot of work in you’re you’re putting everything on the line but you got to be able to hold it together mentally and emotionally because you’re just wasting energy otherwise so uh hopefully he learns that look this guy has ridiculous amounts of talent moose I mean he is so so so good you feel like it’s just a matter of time but um he’s going to have to learn from today well he is the best weapon in our Arsenal Trevor imman another thrilling Sunday on CBS always great to be with you pal thanks so much all right here’s a look at where the money will fall following this Sunday on tour Cam Davis we won’t call it a backdoor Victory but it did in some ways fall in his lap that bag he was prepping for a playoff with OA baa but instead a three putt later he stands alone a winner once again at Rocket mortgage classic for
