[Music] [Applause] [Music] 1982 it was a funny sort of racing year nothing ever quite worked out ardross couldn’t quite win the arc assert got bogged down Golden Fleece never ran after the Derby cow couldn’t manage the champion Shara got beat in the vernons and for the two-year-olds it was almost the same really we all thought that gittis would scoop the pool and then he was horribly wrong in the Dewhurst and typically for 1982 it was the very next after Gus that the promising Philly flamco blew out this tapes divide into two parts with the second portion confined to the longest opportunity ever assembled on video for coming to the wrong assumption about two-year-olds if you want to spin onto that part fine but for the rest of us the juveniles come later as we look back over the year it’s symbolic really that the very first race we study had a significance that hardly anyone appreciated at the time it was at Kempton on Easter Monday it had PO with rain the race was the masaka stakes build as a 1,000 Guin trial and as the reappearance of Harry Rags unbeaten Philly dancing rocks as it happened dancing rocked around like a crab and the race and quite a bit of the Season belonged to a little Philly who’d won two out of five as a 2-year-old without getting any rave reviews for this is where it began for time Charter and it’s time Charter from dreaming away Karina epithet racing towards the final Fong time Charter dreaming away epithet and Karina in the final Fong time Charter clear by four lengths they race on towards the line time Charter winning easily from epithet dreaming away Karina and a z first time Charter second epithet and third dreaming away look good didn’t it but funnily enough you could still get 25 to one time Charter for both the 1,000 ginies and the Oaks after that win hindsight makes you greedy as for excuses well it’s much the dancing Rock’s credit that she later showed that form far too bad to be true but new marking next day the stage was set for another early season Moment of Truth the Craven Stakes so often a graveyard of classic hopes and this time it got its scalps again in the field the Royal Lodge winner noric the much TI C hope simply great and the horse noric beat at ascet silverhawk they couldn’t all look like classic winnersong marker where Wong Choy now challenges for the lead with codrington and Silver Hawk on the stand side simply great still making Headway in fourth place they come to the final furong Silver Hawk has gone half a length or so clear of Wong Choy simply great trying to get on Sterns and on the far side new lgo’s making Headway Racing for the line it’s Silver Hawk with a clear Advantage now from Wong Choy newago and simply great first Silver Hawk and a dead heat for second place between neago and Wong Choy Silver Hawk winning in the style that made him Darby if not 2,000 guine favorite but a day later you could see how heavy that label could hang for the ear of sepon stakes saw the first appearance since the previous year’s Derby of the onetime favorite calow and besides the crack New Zealand horse ring the bell his opponents included the hor who created a sensation the 1981 C mistakes kind of hush this time there was no hush in caligo of hush up the center of the course and Killian still making a little ground on the fire rails Prince’s gate is making a forward move as they come down to the final furong and a half Carla glow has now drawn several lengths clear of ring the bell who’s gone into second then after these comes no Alto and kind of hush but Racing for the line it’s Carla glow who’s steadily increasing his lead over ring the bell kind of hushes third close close home Carlow is a clear leader from ring the bell first Carlow second ring the bell and Third Kind of hush so calow got away with favoritism but in the nelwin stakes at New Market that Thursday Merlin’s charm couldn’t quite justify the highest expectations mind you it’s hard to blame her when you look back at the other Phillies in this 1,000 Guin trial on the house triple tiple and above all and at8 coming down to the final two furong with vaguely star on the far rail shalong towards a stand side in between the pair of them is on the house these three followed by warmhearted then comes triple Tipple Merlin’s charm putting in quite a good finishing burst as they pass the furong marker it’s Shalon that’s gone a length or so clear Merlin’s charm finishing quite fast in second then after these comes vaguely star but Racing for the line it’s shallon with the advantage over Merlin’s charm first was Shalo second Merlin’s charm and third triple Tipple Shalon wins the nwin the next day it was the Fred darling at Newbury three-year-old Phillies under the spotlight again and in particular stratospheric a half sister to the 198 1,000 winner quick as lightning and thought by many to be as good not Newber she wasn’t but those who went felt they had seen a classic Philly slightly dangerous she’d won her only race as a 2-year-old and looked like losing the unbeaten record in thisa remains close up on the far rail stratospheric just after these on the outside Fong and a half to go now and it’s still just Zara by this small margin but uh with slightly dangerous moving on now and taking it up just inside the furong so with three parts of a furong to go slightly dangerous a clear leader Now 50 yards now slightly dangerous a clear leader from zinara closeup ecstatica first slight slly dangerous second zinara and third ecstatica so slightly dangerous winds and we have a reshuffling of the pack amongst the Phillies it was the same with the Colts cjun beat tender King with wind and weaing trailing in the greenham count Parlin won gutsy at Epsom then we moved to Sandown for the guardian classic trial which in 1981 had dealt to shurgar this year there were high hopes for jalm and be my native but the Revelation in 198 2 was a once race supposedly unready son of the jinsky Called Peace time peace time on the rails then sweet as sugar beginning to lose round then making very good Headway is be my native as they come down to the last quarter of a mile and there’s very little between lift M be my native peace time on the rails and then ashendon as they run down furong and a half from home over on the far rails it’s peace time in the red it’s be my native and they’re going away at the moment now from Leaf mass in s talaman but it’s peace time as they run down towards the final half furong it’s peace time who has the upper hand here and running on strongly in second place is be my native those two are clear and then jalud and zos finishing well first peace time second be my native and third was Jal mood the victory showed that peace time had clearly overcome the problems that needed a hob day operation during the winter and indeed he was made Darby favorite rather ironic at this time of fand’s drama 4 days later at Ascot another ex invalid nailed his color to the Mast electric who pull the muscle as a 2-year-old reappeared at Short odds in the white rose stakes and there didn’t seem much wrong this time Tri still in the lead that being challenged strongly now on the outside by Electric but not much between those two and they’re followed by Crossways who’s improving in between them under very strong pressure and then comes Arrowwood dream as they run to the last half furong and it’s electric in the lead strongly challenged by Crossways electric holding Crossways as they get towards the finish and then Palace gold finishing late for third place first electric second Crossways and third Palace gold so from classic trials to the classics proper at first the 1,000 guine where Henry CLE decided not to run shallow so leester pigot rode the French favorite play it safe Steve coron chose slightly dangerous in front of Merlin’s charm stratospheric had another try so too did her lesser fancy table companion Deon AR Kempton winner time Charter and a Philly who everyone claimed had failed to stay in the N gwin the 33 to1 chance on the house the leader in the CER of the course time Charter from Di and on the house starting a steady run through the field as they come down the final two and a half furong time chart is the leader from on the house then comes Di and play it safe these four drawing clear are their Rivals as they come down to the final quarter mile on the house takes up the running from time Charter towards a stand side Dyan is third play it safe is fourth coming down now to the final furong on the house striding clear of time Charter towards the stand side the gray darney on the far sides in third then comes play at safe and fourth and as they race up towards the line it’s on the house with a clear Advantage from time Charter in second with diani in third first on the house second time Charter and third was Dian on the house his victory showed how you shouldn’t condemn a three-year-old on just one disappointment at this time of year and we had the same lesson in the 2000 with Winden weing running a blind de here after being well beaten at Newbury 26 Runners then for the 2000 silverhawk was the rather sweaty favorite the Irish pair achieved and dar mon were fancied so too with the French horse Zeno on whom Freddy head showed whatever dramas may have beset his previous trips here you can’t keep a good man down leers down the center of the course they come up to the three furong marker with DAR monar and Windam weing and Zeno in the center of the course ahead of the group on the stand side silly Steven Silver Hawk starting a run on the stand side but wind and wngs maintaining a lead being challenged by Zeno these two have gone clear of Dar Monarch then comes tender king with a steady run on the far side coming to the final furong wind and weing being challenged by Zeno on the stand side tender King in third position these three are clear of ramador going for the line wind and weing with Zeno Zeno and wind and weing very close and in third is tender King first Zeno second wind and weing and third tender King Zeno wins the 2,000 ginies for France but we are now only a month away from Epsom and the next 30 days had all sorts of excitements Peace time was coughing but then made a successful comeback at Goodwood simply great at last came good at York only to injure himself just before Epsom Golden Fleece began to create some impressive Bal doy Bal who after whizzing in at lepers time and British hopes seemed to rest on the result of the lingfield Derby trial where jalm mood was to be tested by electric and by cil’s persuasive New Market winner Mr floro carbon it was an exam passed with credit carbon also coming with a steady run santel man goes back into fourth as they race down to the final furong it’s Jal mood who strides clear Jal mood is the leader from Mr flurocarbon Electric is third on the rails and as they race down now into the final half furong its Jal mood striding clear Mr fluo carbon’s in second electric is third and going for the line it’s jalm with a clear advantage over Mr fluo carbon and electric first Jal mood second Mr fluorocarbon and third Electric so on to Epsom 18 Runners but for the first time in years not one of them with pigot on its back in hindsight it would been better to reinstate him aboard ppis but that’s all academic now jalm and peace time were the best supported English Runners but backers finally believe the Irish stories about Golden Fleece and the 1982 Derby showed them to be right Norwick with peace time making Headway towards the outside so too is paron they’re into the straight with just over three furong to race jel mood coming up to join the leaders but it is Norwick on the rails who’s taken it up from peace time and touching wood with making Headway strongly towards the outside Golden Fleece they’re coming to the final two fongs and it is Norwick from peace time with Golden Fleece and touching wood coming to join Norwick Golden Fleece now has just struck the front from touching wood they’re coming to the final furong and it is Golden Fleece who’s gone clear from touching wood and Norwick pepolis finishing fast but it is Golden Fleece who leads touching wood is second and then silver hwk and pepolis first Golden Fleece second touching wood and third Silver Hawk Golden Fleece wins the Derby and in the fastest ever electrically recorded time it looked like Championship stuff as we didn’t see him again we’ll never really know what we do know of course is that nowadays it doesn’t make strict economic sense to campaign a crack three-year-old for another season they can earn much more at stud and anyway as we see here with glint of gold in the coronation cup you don’t necessarily collect the races you think you ought to win critique is chasing the first two Castle keep is making Headway on the outside so to his Easter Sun a quarter of a mile from home and it is glint of gold in the lead from Easter Sun critique and Castle keep and as they race down now towards the final furong and it is glint of gold with Easter Sun finishing very strongly indeed racing now for the line and it is glint of gold and Easter Sun there’s little to choose between the two first Easter Sun second glint of gold and third critique Easter Sun out sprinting dint of gold to land the coronation cup and in the Oaks on the Saturday it was once again the final burst that was decisive 13 Runners the lingfield trial winner tance his favorite the French Philly all along supposed to prefer softer ground as was last feather chosen by Steve coron in front of slightly dangerous Steve was wrong but then no one could counter the late punch of apprentice boxer Billy NES on Henry Candy’s time Charter then on the outside time Charter is followed by all along and aif taunt improving in the center of the course but some way still from the leaders after these we have D brundel the back marker a furong and a half to go last feather has hit the front slightly dangerous challenges zenar improves steadily on the far side time Charter also 100 yds to race now we have time Charter on the outside taking it up 50 yards from home now it’s time Charter slightly dangerous last feather a was first time Charter second slightly dangerous and third last feather time Charter wins The Oaks and also gives the lie to all those nols like me who had said that anything by the Sprinter s Tamer couldn’t possibly stay a mile and a half on to Royal ascet now for the older horses at least and first that brilliant performance by Dara Monch in the St james’ Palace Stakes many people have thought his 20 to1 success in the Irish 2000 had been a bit of a fluke so much so that Ivana was preferred in the betting here also in this tender King Haze and wind weing but Dar mon blew them allall out at the two Fong pole wind and weing being pressed Now by iano and dar monik with tender King improving and dar monar now is struck the front and is storming clear with tender King moving up into second place and as they race for the line it is daram Mona clear from tender King and these two clear from iano and Hayes first daram monar second tender King and third was Ivano yes Dara monar establishing his reputation that aset and so too did shalow here in the coronation Stakes but sadly the same race was the last for two other brilliant Phillies Woodstream who’d won the Chev part and finished second in the Irish 1000 and circus ring who’ carried all before her as a 2-year-old this was her first and last appearance in 1982 a year can be a long time with and it is chalen who’s the leader from Rose of monra with making up ground on the outside on the house then comes Greece but as they race down towards the final furong and it is chalen who is the leader from on the house and dancing rocks and as they approach the line it is chall and clear from ing rocks and Greece who’s finishing very strongly first shallon second was Greece and third dancing rocks shallon there and the last of Woodstream and circus ring but now to the most solid reputation before after and during 1982 ardross 6 years old now yet still Supreme among stayers and practically everything else we see him in his element the ascet Gold Cup for the second time and with Applause as ever about his head noino in the lead from zudo with ardr El B trying to get on terms with the leader two furong out noino and ardross is being brought up on the outside by Lester pigot as they come down towards the final furong and ardross has swept majestically into the lead going past elb and as they race for the line it is AR Ross clear from noino and temporary fixer who’s finishing strongly and first was Ard Ross second a temporary fixer and third El bad ardross in the Gold Cup whatever will we do without him he had of course start his career in Ireland and it’s there we go next for the 21st running of the Irish sweeps Derby and for our first first glimpse of aert who after a warmup behind Golden Fleece had boed in for the gallin and then won the French derby in the same sanster colors carried by Golden Fleece indeed the main interest of this Irish Derby was the presence of Silver Hawk in the field who’d been just four lengths behind golden Fleet and epsom as AER Drew further and further away to give sanster his third Derby in less than a month one was tempted to paraphrase lady brel and say to have one such coat might be good fortune to have two borders on overindulgence the last two fings assert has gone right away assert the leader chased by Silver Hawk as they race towards the final Furlong the leader is assert well clear a Silver Hawk in second Patcher staying on in third as they race up to the Finish assert has gone away winning it most impressively going to the Finish assert is the winner Silver Hawk is second and in third place is Patcher at the line assert is the winner first a second Silver Hawk and third patcher for the record aert beat Silver Hawk there by eight lengths twice as far as golden flee had done at Epson but the most interesting comparisons at this time of year come with the three and four year olds racing against each other and our first real chance to see that was here in the eclipse Stakes at sandan with calow reappearing opposed by the Darby 7eventh and eighth peace time and rock Amador but in the end it was Lovitz who finished and even he was strictly a spectator as cow Drew clear his old gray years cocked to the cheers of the crowd at the three foong pole and calow now has hit the front from Lovitz with peace time making up ground on the outside Rock Amador dropping back they’ve got just over a quarter of a mile to race and it is calow from lovit and peace time then Prima V coming up on the outside they’re racing now for the final F off and it is cow from Lovich and peace time they’re followed by Prima voi dropping right out his silver season and as they come down now towards the final half furong and it is calow out on his own from Lovich and a peace [Applause] time first cow second lobitz and third ramador the four-year-old cow putting youth in its place and in the William Hill July cup 5 days later it was the 5-year-old sharo who beat 15 crack sprinters including the ascat winning four-year-old Indian king and the three-year-olds tender King and vaguely star whose half brother vaguely great had finished ah head of sharo in the 1980 July cup what’s more we all thought the ground would been too fast for Sho we were wrong they come down now to the final furong and a half where Tina’s pet just about in front but being challenged Now by Indian king on the far rails gabat showing some good speed on the far side and vaguely star on the stand side and so to his tender King coming on the stand side inside the final furong vagle star sharo putting in a good challenge vagle star sharo Indian king on the rails but going to the line is sharo and vagle star the close leaders first sharpo second vagle star and third was Indian king sharpo and at their very best and the trend of the older haed getting the verdict continued in the King George at ascet where aert reappeared and was odds on to get this for the younger generation but it was a tough one his half brother B Cara winner of the GH first time out the ultra game glint of gold the always dangerous critique Asser handle them all but he had nothing left for the late Rush of caligo three fongs as they enter the straight Baler on the rails assert moving up and within a half length now on the outside glint of gold is not far away Carlow very close forth on the inside of this one after them comes critique who’s made up a several places they come to the final furong and a half of the race now with AER taking it up from Bala but Cara glow going on well on the far side and also glint of gold on the outer assert with a half furong to go but carow making ground carow going on as they get closer Home Carlow from assert then glint of gold and then Bala first CA glow second assert and third glint of gold cow’s Victory represented something of a training performance by Guy harwood’s team the cod had to be saddled with a special pad to avoid a mysterious lump on his back but the training performance of the whole season was unquestionably that of David chapen with sober the Yorkshire Philly he transformed from a pler into the best female Sprinter in Britain by the time sober came South for the stewards cup at Goodwood she’ already won six times before injuring herself at air She was drawn number one on the unfavored near side she put up a Bronco display on the way to the start not many in the South believed in her this so down to the two furong pole it’s sober on the stand side who’s a clear leader and they’ve got a furong and a half to go sober who played up on the way to the start bradel makes ground on the far side gabat in the center on the far side then Celestial dancer but it’s still sober and they come to the final 100 yards of the race sober who must have led for much of the journey after these bradel Celestial dancer M’s pleasure is in Forth first sober second badale and third Celestial dancer sober what a lady and the supposed weaker sex put it across the Colts again in goodba richest race the susic stakes 1,000 guine winner on the house was opposed by a chief tender King Merlin’s charm and most interestingly by sandur Prince appearing for the first time since his early season flop at kton for the prince it was nearly a royal comeback nearly but not quite now with B taking it up from Silver season quickly back into third place achieved running on into second on the house improving tender King santer Prince on the far side and they come down to the final furong pole B bide achieved on the outside and also on the house on the house just ahead of Sanders Prince now inside 100 yards and it’s on the house on the outside of Santos Prince not much between them achieved in third first on the house second sanur Prince and third achieved on the house takes the sassic stakes but a couple of weeks later the road ran out for shallow the one Philly people might have backed to beat on the house over a mile at the state AG the race was the Hungerford Stakes at Newbury 10 Runners including hay the ever frustrating Bell ler and the Revelation from Tipperary parur having his first race since cracking a leg as a 2-year-old on this day he looked the fastest croc in the business now the leaders are bunching with challeng just about striking the front but on the outside of that and showing ahead is Pell as they come down a furong and a half from home and it’s parel from chalen and then Hayes Str jly challenging on the outside and as they come down to the last half furong and it’s pder strongly challenged Now by beldale ler I’ll see now as they get towards the Finish pel goes clear in second place Bel L then comes Haz and mean Francine first pad second beldale lter and third was Hayes parur winning like a crowd pleaser and on the next day ardross the most most popular runner in training brought his fans to newbur ardross running for the first time since being unable to catch an inspired height to Fashion at New Market you could hardly call this a comeback but it did show that the star still knew his lines and in this Jeffrey fre Stakes the likes of Baffin e sun and abber field were strictly assistant players two and a half furong from her mardos in the lead from the very strongly ridden Baffin and their Easter sun on the outside abber field definitely last to the four now as they go into the last quarter of a mile and it’s Aros in the lead being just just asked to Quicken there at the rider looking R to see if there’s danger he can’t see any coming into the final furong and it’s arros who’s quick and clear now race for second place between Baffin and Easter sun and close home AR well clear and then absolutely together come Baffin and Easter Sun for second place first AR Ross second Baffin and third Easter Sun so ardos was on target for the arct the Triumph and three days after Newbury one of his most feared Arc Rivals was putting his reputation on the line at York after getting beaten in the King George assert may have been odds on for the Benson and hedges but everyone knew the test was of his condition not of his ability the answer was impressive the only worry had been Pat Ed’s Fitness Pat had broken a finger in the previous race but as it turned out his problem was only in pulling up am mindes Castle keep and especially Mr floro carbon have been impressive winners last time out but they were just onlookers here as aert came away like a high stepper just watch him change his legs in the straight my guest racing to the three furong marker and assert continues to lead from Mr flura carbon in second her minda starting his run towards the center of the course noric being put under pressure on the fire rails then after these Castle keep towards a center after two furong marker it’s assert maintaining a clear advantage noric on the rails comes up to challenge for second Mr fluo carbon one off the rails and amas towards the center but it’s assert striding away at the furong marker assert increasing his lead as they race for the line assert has driven clear of noric on the rails and amas but going for the line it’s assert many lengths clear of nck and amas first assert second noric and third amas Pat edry overcomes a bit of pain to win the Benson and hedges but in the very next race the Yorkshire Oaks Willie Carson had the memory of that really terrible smash on silk and knot the previous year Willie seemed to have the right conveyance this time Swift foot fresh from A Fine win in the Irish guine soaks but this was the day we should have begun to realize just how good a wasi was ridden here by a pigot a bit special even by his remarkable standards on the rails and after these cut Lo Lo and Dish Dash H Swift fo the leader on the rails aif is second in third is dancing rocks but then comes Dish Dash towards the stand side with a strong run and inside the final furong aif just the leader from Swift foot a showing just in front of Swift foot on the rails Dish Dash on the stand side close home and first aif second Swift foot and third Dish Dash aasi wins the Yorkshire Oaks and this was the week when we heard that Golden Fleece wouldn’t run again and frankly his Derby form was beginning to look pretty suspect the latest blow to its credibility came here in the great voltage of stakes where the Darby second touching wood was made six to four favorite but was never able to M any challenge for the lead where electrics only worry came from glint of Gold’s brother Dar sha electric from Super Sunrise Diamond sh towards the central the course has gone into second Super Sunrise third third Palace gold four then after these touching wood but Racing for the final furong hits electric with the advantage on the far rails chasing him at the center of the course is Diamond sh these two have drawn clear of touching wood and super Sunrise Racing for the line it’s electric maintaining his Advantage Diamond sh putting in a strong run in second going for the line it’s electric with the advantage from Diamond sh in second first was electric second Diamond shell and third touching wood that performance promoted electric ahead of touching wood as St lger favorite but as you know that final classic was to turn events around dramatically One race that didn’t shock was York’s William Hill Sprint sharo was an even money favorite and despite the Royal aset winner Fearless lad lucky Hunter Tina’s pet chison Park and the best French printer kind music sharpo written by Steve coron in place of the finger Edy showed that over five furong there’s nothing on four legs that he can’t catch on his day they a furong and a half to race and Tina pet and kind music the two leaders sharo now beginning his run on the stand side and as they come to the final furong sharo comes to take it up sharpo from kind music and Cheston Park and going for the line it’s sharpo now with a cleared mark from Cheston Park then comes kind music and Tina’s pet first sharo second chaleston Park and third Third Kind music sharper wins the William Hill Sprint for the third year and was one horse who almost avoided the 1982 theme of unfulfillment but onto goodward and to that great Showdown The Waterford Crystal mile where the rot set in again R for some that is for in the field where the classic winners Dar monik on the house freely hailed as the best of their generation and parur whose new women we’ve just seen had him talked of in the same breath as AER they all got turned over sand her prin set off in front and stayed there and it was left to the able but usually n to Cooperative mil of the valy to chase him home at 150 to1 outside of these we have Karina now making a run and they’ve got a far long to go it’s Sanders Prince still a clear leader and by some four lengths coming down to the last half now Santos Prince going on very strongly and giving nothing away whatever after this in second place mil of the barley and Bel last takes third first sanus prince second milk of the barley and third beldale luster Sanders Prince winning in a way which makes one wonder the might have beans if he’d been in form at 2000 guine time this was a great spell for his stable and in the Vernon Sprint in the first week of September their Indian king claimed the most important scalp in his business that of sharpo well to be strict about it hok’s tight turn on the six furong track and shara’s inability to settle on the day played a part also but Indian King’s a real galloper and when he set off after the trailblazing sea it would have taken Wings to catch him then GRE on the far side with Fearless lad sweet Mundy and Jester on the near side as they come to the F and a half from home marker SEF prar by Indian king it’s Indian king who goes on from SEF then comes fly lad then sharo in coming the Fong marker Indian king going on an Indian king a length and a half clear now as they go for the line into the final half Fong Indian king two length clear now Indian king for f lad great Easter finishing very strongly but going for line Indian king from Great Eastern FIS lad say and sharo first Indian king Second Great Eastern and third Fearless lad so Indian king got the decision but at least sharo went out in Triumph with a rugged victory in the pred deab on arct the Triumph day but electric season didn’t end so happily he seemed to have an outstanding chance in St Ledger only to suffer a recurrence of back TR trouble early in the race the two French horses Shem and Lon first and second in the grand PR to Perry were much fancied so was D show on the day touching wood with blinkers for the first time showed after all that there wasn’t much wrong with the Derby form touching wood and Z those to a clear from broken rail then Norwick making ground on the outside together with diamond sha as they approach the F long and a half to go it’s touching wood and Zeus from Diamond sha then comes Norwick and Rocka Mador inside the final furong touching wood and zelus from Diamond sh and as they go towards the line it’s touching wood by a length and a half from zelus Diamond sh and no can at the line it’s touching wood from zelus first touching wood second xylos and third Diamond sha touching wood winning the at Ledger and four weeks later he was to double things up by by taking the Irish and Ledger at the Cara but now race where the weather lessen the spectacle if not the brave achievements of the principles the dam Stakes over aset six furlongs which the rain had made a pitiless test you’ll hardly ever see sprinters finish as tired as this but how magnificently Indian king confirmed his status as the best six furong horse in the country and how bravely did sober battle against him the Cinderella mayor from Yorkshire had by now won 10 of her 12 races and anything that beat is Indian king now coming to join sober in the lead followed by Celestial dancer with blue sing running on into third place but as they come inside the final furong and it is Indian king from sober these two followed by Celestial dancer and as they approach the line it is Indian king from sober blue sing and vaguely Star first Indian King second sober and third blue sing Indian king just preventing a fairy tale end to soba’s first attempt in Paton race company but when aset gets soft it’s worth preparing for shocks and two days later in the Queen Elizabeth second Stakes we got the biggest surprise of the Season Santos Prince was out again but pessimistic about the conditions Mr floro carin’s team was also worried daram monik was on the recovery Road after to being sick at Goodwood achieve was in blinkers again about them all but the one horse no one expected was Buzzard’s Bay a brilliant but eccentric animal occasionally apt to down tools early in a race if the fancy took him this time the fancy took him clear and it is Buzzards Bay who’s just gone on now from no alcoholic andara Monarch and as they race down inside the final furong and it is Buzzards Bay the leader from no alcoholic in second place these two clear with a cheve coming through strongly and at the line it’s buzzers Bay clear from no Al coholic achieved andara monar first Buzzards Bay second no alcoholic and third achieved and by October the Reigns had come to New Market where Little Wolf was favorite here in the Jockey Club cup and confirmed it in style leader from hallbury and Orin thir first Little Wolf second halsbury and third or one day on and we were in Paris for the arctor Triumph three furong out heavy going bonon leads Bala assert his favorite and ardos heads the English challenge for this the richest race in Europe A’s third but it’s AA who’s coming with the strongest run as they pass the two furong post AA strikes the front Aasif towards a stands side with April run these two making a forward move and are dross making a forward move towards the inside but it’s a key to the leader from Aasif with arros between them April run towards a stand side these four are drawn clear AKA maintains her Advantage arros goes into second then aasi an April run but it’s AKA AKA from ardross as they come into the final 50 yards AA from ardross first Akida second ad Ross and third Aasif a fortn night later for the hon meeting at New Market it wasn’t surprising to see some of the horses shown the effects of the long hard season in the challenge Stakes Hayes and shallow had one last and unsuccessful fling milk of The Barley was frustrating as usual it was left to movato who hadn’t run since Chicago’s budweis a million to stretch the favorite and winner no alcoholic to go no alcoholic comes up towards a stands side to challenge motato these two are a couple of length clear of The Quiet bitter in third hay four milk of The Barley five Shalon Six coming down to the final furong and it’s no alcoholic with a definite Advantage a good half length from motat on the far rails these two now well clear of The Quiet bidder milk of The Barley comes into fourth but as they race up into the last half furong it’s no alcoholic a definite leader from movato and close home no alcoholic with movato fighting back in second and then comes the Qui bidder first no alcoholic second tato and third the quiet bidder the ultra tough no alcoholic wins The Challenge Stakes after a real pitch battle the same Ender term conditions Prevail for the due by sponsored Champion Stakes on the Saturday and can’t of helped the hot favorite ciglow whose Daisy cutter action could never really stretch the field as he can at his best the guine winner Zena was back in the field but ran like a goat monin looked for a moment as if he might fulfill some of those early season hopes this race had only one champion on the day time Charter trapped on the rails at one stage when she finally escaped she flew like a bird and then after these count Palin towards the center of the group is only a length behind the leaders Rajan is making Headway Prima V is making Headway and so to is monin as they come now to the final two fongs carag glow on the rails being joined by monin one off the rails time Charter putting in a good run just behind these and it’s monin leading from time Charter and Prima vir coming up to challenge and as they go to the final furong time Charter on the rails takes the lead it’s time Charter the leader from primoi monin then after these no Alto gone into fourth but going for the line it’s time Charter striding clear time Charter the clear leader from Prima V and no Alto first time Charter second Prima and third no Alto so time chart won the champion but there was a Steward’s inquiry into possible interference as she came through but these official pictures show that if there was a sinner it was monin and so time Charter was safe so time Charter wins the champion and before we go on to the two-year-olds here’s a selection of some of the top handicaps and some great finishes but as they come inside the final furong and it’s funny spring now showing just in the lead from Ridgefield approaching line funny spring from Kings ride and Ridgefield and Buzzard’s Bay and they come down to the final furong Pole now with pno just the leader from Seven hearts on the far side Buzzards Bay goes very fast 100 yards from home now pno still but Buzzard’s Bay almost up sides close home now Buzzard’s Bay from pno after pno sil’s night in front of another Sam lucat Tanica from another Sam taking up the running inside the final furong it’s another Sam who storms clear another Sam the leader from lucat Tanica then comes cared iron Bedford going for the line it’s another Sam well clear of Lucan and then comes Kadar pops his joys in second teapot is in third then after these Morgan’s Choice Dragon Palace on the rails then hallbury and after this Fallen Angel but coming out to the final furong and it’s Mountain Lodge Mountain Lodge a clear leader from popsy Joy teapots Third Dragon Palace four Halls brid five and Racing for the line it’s Mountain Lodge increasing his advantage over popsy Joy close home Mountain Lodge is clear of pops’s joy and teapot little to choose between rebello who’s just got the advantage from mirabo finishing very fast so to his match winner and mm’s game but Racing for the line mirabo on the stand side rebello on the far side po shows in the lead from Don giovan cordite Spar and Hills pageant it’s Spanish pool as they go to the last half furong and it’s Spanish pool leading from D Giovani cordite Spar and Hills pageant as they get to the post and suzama these two are very close and improving 100 yards to race now and these five very close together on the outside go total disput it with suzama and cl home is just suzama match Winner Takes up the running match winner from gavo on the rails match Master finishing very fast in third and Racing for the line gavo battling back and it’s very close between gavo just getting head in front from match master and it’s King’s Glory from Doc Martin and then comes battle him coming with a very strong Challenge and so is pno and it’s Kings glory. Mountain pno and battle him and Shi as they get towards the Finish P just getting through from the Kings glory. Martin it’s not no uturn but it’s very close indeed coming up towards the line no uturn Indian Trail orar and Cera T boy has it all to do but he’s closing into the final half Fong and it’s my de fer being challenged out by famous star my dear fellow famous St here comes vados and close home and vados is flying and it’s vados just they got up the rising ground Century City taking up the running here they’ve got 100 yards to go it’s Century City Indian Trail making a little bit of Headway closeup home now Century City Indian Trail closing aravo and F Sun so Joe merca won the cambrid at last with Sentry City Joe’s been around for 30 years now and knows as well as anyone that a year on most predictions are just empty words but between seasons and indeed during them there’s a lot of fun and occasional profit in combing through the Jungle of 2-year-old form to find one’s own view of a future champion and there’s no better way of doing this than starting with an actual look at some of the most important races run so come with us now through 29 of the leading twoyear races of 1982 a year on we’ll understand what they meant at this stage we’re all entitled to our own guess we start amongst the top hats of Royal ascet and with horage that amazing animal who’ actually begun his racing in the very first week of the Season up at air remarkably here in the centry stakes he was running for the sixth time he was also running with a sore foot was up against a speedy cult in kafu but horage was tough Concord hero making a run stand side on the outside of these cfu close up orange squash although not quite as close as before and they’ve less than a quarter of a mile to race now and it is hor still who’s made the bul of the running in this race being tackled Now by CFO running on strongly and the pair of them have gone away from the others led by Concord hero and stay sharp it’s still orage they come to the final half furong orage by three parts for length here 50 hours to go horage holds on from cafu in second place quite a long Gap to stay Shar first orage second cfu and third stay sharp horage hanging on gamely and showing that at this stage he was clearly the top coat the Phillies were out next day for the Queen Mary stakes and and plenty of contenders for the top spot shikar and deportment K of passion who’ had both Annie Edge and Bumpkin behind her at Newbury and wiard who’d won so impressively first time out she was made favorite here and rightly so with Dad shler and on the far side Paddock princess Sol mile just after these making a little ground comes carolside a fell long and a half to race now Crime of Passion on the stand rails has been joined by wad in the center shler races on the far side while just after these comes Bumpkin and they into the last 150 yards of the race with widad this one a just clear leader at this point inside the last half of furong now and it is wiad from Crime of Passion but with on the far side caride making a run for second first weard second crime of passion and a dead heat for third place between Annie Edge and Carol side those Phillies may have looked to be going fast but wait till you see this bronzey in the Norfolk Stakes he’s only defeated in six runs been by horage if they had races over four furong nobody would have caught him Bas crayon found out here five fongs at aset for Brony is almost too far and it’s Brony who’s the clear leader from B Bob with crayon trying to get on terms and as they race down now inside the final Fong and it is bronze Brey clear from crayon who’s trying to get on terms with him as they race for the line and it is bronzey from crayon and these two are long way clear from Mari who’s come through into third place first brondesbury second crayon and third [Music] Marie bronzey just lasting home in the nor stakes in record time and sadly that was the last we saw of him but when we move on to the July meeting at New Market the Phillies cars for the Cherry Hinton Stakes was much as at aset with the addition of the Dual winner brigh crocus who reared over in the Stalls wiard also swerved at the start and her six pound penalty can’t have helped much either but this was a day that belonged to Crime of Passion just look at the way she stretches her neck out towards the line just over two fongs to race with Crime of Passion now Leader by length and a half from Bright crocus in second then comes carolside making a forward move weard towards a stands side moves up now to dispute the second but crime of passion still a length and a half clear as they come to the final furong crime of passions the leader silk pajamas making steady Headway on the rails Carol making Headway into third bright crocus is four weard five Racing for the line there’s little to choose between crime of passion with Carol side on the stands side close home Crime of Passion silk pajamas and Carol side first Crime of Passion second Carol side and third silk pajamas so Crime of Passion becoming a first patent race winner for trainer Ray Lang used to be Peter wn’s head lad next day at New Market Lang’s former colleague Matt McCormack turned out horage to make it seven out of seven in the July Stakes but not without a struggle horage lost a shoe and his pitch early on cfu ran very fast and the Windsor winner on stage proved quite an opponent as they come two and a half furong from home kafu showing in the lead then horage racing much nearer to the center and on stage also much nearer to the center the most near in fact and it’s horage now shows ahead from kafu and on stage on stage on the far side of horage they just clear of in third place on stage as they go up to the last half furong now and there’s not a lot between horage and on stage but it’s horage from on stage as they get towards the Finish horage just half a length three quars of a length in the league close home horage from on stage first arage second on stage and third cfu horage continuing his unbeaten run and showing that modest Beginnings can still still breakthrough to the big time even in the Blue Chip bloodstock world that lesson was underlined next week at Sandown when times time top five wins at such spots as catrick Beverly and redar he was up against the Hardy Epsom 2-year-old another risk and Amanda’s half sister favid who looked so good when winning here earlier in the month it was difficult but time’s time was up to it so they pass the halfway point of the race and it is still times time who’s LED from the start this one by about a half length I would say at this point from fav there’s a length and a half after this to bold Bob a half length then to another risk and finally dorsed Eagle they’ve got a half Fong to go fav comes up besides the earlier leader and close home we’ve got times time just ahead of Fage first time time second Fage and third another risk times time cracking Fage and winning for the sixth but last occasion at asot next day the Virginia Water Stakes was for Phillies who’ never run at all road to the top was made favorite but missed the break Elian and Lebanese song had their supporters the significance here was to catch a first sight of her be and improves from this position while after these comes Al liian making a little bit of ground PRI mistress on the inside of this one then road to the top followed by Shoreline and on the inside of Shoreline flying friend they’ve got a furong to now habti comes to take it up just inside the furong pole they’ve got a half to go now and it is herti from on the far side Lebanese song Running on a little bit of Le but it is Haba clear leer first habiti second was elisian and third Lebanese song an unraised Philly in habibti starting her career in style and two races later the sandwich day saw a successful first run for the Epsom gray cuit tire but he had some steering problems had to share the result with musti who’ been a good third Bonny face and dun beef at New Market half length at this point musti has come up to take second place from sacred path Kuwait to running on strongly Comes The Challenge on the outside and making good Headway on the inside how blah Fong and a half to go ku8 to from on the inside musk TI not too much between these two and they pass the furong pole with Kuwait toar just ahead and these two going away from the others with a half far long to go Kuwait toar musti fighting back not much between these two with 50 yards to go and then there’s a big gap to Har a dead heat for first place between Kuwait Tower and musti and third was how Bloody yes the judge couldn’t separate Kuwait tar and musite no such problem for the milom stakes at Goodwood open to Colts as well as Phillies nowadays and seeing the return to five furlongs and a sum Restraint of haraj his friend kafu the triple winner Rutland was made odds on but that was a mistake so the four runners in close company as they passed the quarter mile Mark sparkling Suzie with CaRu going on on the inside and in fact taking it up and Rutland very close on the outer these three go away from flying desk but kuu is the clear leader coming inside the last Fong with 100 yards to race now CaRu by some three lengths Rutland taking second place after their sparkling Suzy first cfu second was Rutland and third sparkling Suzy in winning the mcom kafu broke the five Fong trap record and another juvenile best time was set at goodard on the Thursday this was the seven furong Mark in the Lanson champagne Stakes it was a bit of a scramble but despite the presence of of kafu stablemate leaf special of dun beast concrescent bonface and of the of the north first and second Al and sheer walk it was all systems go who would not be denied his third win on the TRU with on the inside still just about the leader but all systems go is very close once again Lea special challenges between these two St bonface makes a run on the outside and close up on the end Shew walk so they come down to the final furong now with all systems go just the leader but Lea special running on and with 150 yards to go nothing much between these two under 100 yards to go now and it’s all systems go first all systems go second lead special and third sheer walk all systems go by ahead but I must say I haven’t changed my immediate impression that they all finished in too much of a heap for any of them to be real Championship material we’ll see anyway the danger of coming to firm conclusions about two RS in mid-season is perfectly demonstrated by our next race the St Hugh Stakes at Newbury where the Cherry hinted winner CRI of passion was taken on by favid who we’d seen getting beaten at sandan people made CRI of passion favorite but over five furlongs and with fav in this form Crime of Passion never had a chance just over two furong from home and crime of passion shows just in the lead from on the rail sparkling Suzie then there followed on the outside by favid a little wider is Misty for me and then come spindleberry as they near the final furong Crime of Passion strongly CH by fav fav on the outside of it now going on and as they come to the last half hourong fav is shot clear quick and very well and gone clear and fabri going a long way clear towards the Finish from crime of passion in second place followed by Misty For Me and lnap first favid second crime of passion and and third Misty For Me So fav something of a sensation there but now we were only four days away from The Season’s biggest impression the first appearance of Gus in the AUM Stakes at York odds on favorite here was Sally ERI who suffered the heavy tag of being supposedly Henry CLE sharpest 2-year-old and actually didn’t stay the seven furlongs rather promising newcomers in brogen and cradle of jazz but watch this the first bow of gittis y leads from Gus in second one off the rails pelor’s point is third good as diamonds four cradle of jazz and broen come next with Northern trial in seventh inside the final two fongs with gorus just in front now saleri on the rails these to have drawn clear of pelor’s Point good as diamond is fourth as they race to the final Fong it’s gorus with a clear Advantage now from saler these two well clear of good as diamonds going for the line it’s gorus with a clear Advantage from saler and second first Gus second saleri and third good as diamonds two significant things happened immediately after the AUM first we saw that trainer dick Hearn was showing uncharacteristic signs of excitement second the news came through the Gus had broken the track record and the Scramble for anti poost bets on the classics was on but from a cat who just shown potential first time up to a Philly habip who was confirming it Second Time Around the lther stakes saw habti opposed by Annie Edge by the over impetuous Bumpkin by Mara best and by Royal heroin who just been bought to carry the same blue and green sster silks as Mar’s best it didn’t matter what they carried because was the two marker bumpin with a two or three length advantage over Royal heroin on the stands rails habip goes into third Myra’s best four and then after these Henry secret Nanny Edge coming now to the final furong where habibti and Royal heroin are the two leaders they’ve drawn clear as Bumpkin Fades rapidly it’s habiti showing in front of Royal heroin going for the line habiti with the advantage Royal heroins in second then after these comes Anni Edge first habibti second Royal heroin and third Annie Edge habip continuing her winning way which was to close for the season in the moare stakes of the Cara but next day at York a much longer winning run continued horage after being made to work a bit the previous Sat by the noble player was trying to make it nine out of nine in the gimm crack and he wasn’t going to misss araj now just comes to the front araj from County broker and then after these All is Forgiven on the stand side safe alarab and then comes Rock and roller coming with a run on the outside but as they face to the line it’s arage with a clear advantage and then after these closely group com sa alab and rock and roller but going for the line arage with a clear advantage over Rock and roller and shackle pin first orage second Rock and roller and third shackle pin horage continuing his remarkable winning run in the gym crack but one thing that did close last season was the great training career a price curtain down perhaps but not before winners like cat a nin tales in the Prince of Wales Stakes a race which also saw the end of the season for time’s time and in which all the efforts of Jonah Chris B Bob and boy Trumpeter couldn’t stop the cat B Bob on the rails continues to lead as they race towards the halfway point in motion not far behind towards the cental of the course then comes Jonah Chris in between the two of them time’s time towards the Cent making Headway boy trumpeters making a little ground coming now into the final furong and a half with with bold Bob on the rails in motion towards the center in between the two of them Jonah Chris one off the rails and boy trumpet are two off the rails cat a Ninetails putting in a strong finish but bold Bob maintains his Advantage Jona Chris challenging strongly Jona Chris challenging now with cat Ninetails finishing fast going to the line little have choose between cat and Ninetails just in front of Jonah Chris first cat nin tales second Jonah Chris and third was Boy Trumpeter K nales there a final season winner for the Gallant Captain but if Ry price is retiring Henry Cel still has a year or two to go yet if he keeps up these 100 winner Seasons he’ll probably never want to quit here’s the salario stakes at Sandown the CLE run of the fort was supposed to be babyish and backward maybe he was but he was too quick for the old rivals rare event and lofty for the swerving Q8 tar and for n who was still unbeaten they’ve got a quar of a mile to race now the fourth who’s extended the advantage a little bit clear half length maybe a shade more K8 Tower however the gray in the center is running on strongly lofty goes back to third place well after this we have n and on the inside rare event finally stay sharp but it’s still the fort well inside the distance now and the fort is still a clear leader from kuwa Tower 50 Ys to go now and the fort clear from kuwa to quite a long Gap then back to lofty and rare event first the fort second Kuwait Tower and third lofty apparently the Ford had a lump on his leg the size of a golf ball as a yearing and our next winner the Philly flamco was so unpromising early on that her trainer in barding wanted to send her home here in goodwood’s Waterford candelabra Stakes with Annie Edge as ever in the field with the dick Hearn trained silk pajamas and 11 to8 favorite you’ll see why Ian balding is pleased that flamco stayed at school well on the outside Annie Edge draws closer once again flamco between the leaders on the inside Octavia girl making some Headway on the rails well on the outside not far behind them comes Kei to the dolphin silk pajamas Miami Dolphin the back marker is C fret and they’ve got a furong and a half to go flamco takes it up at this point challenged by Annie H Octavia girl making ground on the far side then silk pajamas who’s running on strongly but it’s flaming a clear leader coming down to the final half F long 50 yards now and it is flamco World play from an AG Octavia girl silk pajamas is in fourth first flamco second Annie Edge and third Octavia girl flamco winning impressively there and strictly on the form book we had a good philli clue in the May Hill Stakes of Doncaster this brought out a climatized the favorite who’ been second to flamco at New Market and silk pajamas Octavia girl and bright who been behind flamco at goodwi Bri kroer had sometimes been a Madam at the start not this time and certainly not in the race it’s still bright kroer who’s LED throughout bright kroer silk pajamas now gain Pursuit then comes Octavia girl and bright cone then Thessalon a climati is being produced for her run on the extreme outside goodbye Shelly trying to close on the rails Emerald reef is last coming to the distance and it’s bright crocus who’s stolen a march on all of them right crocus who’s made all so far could this be another ler pick it trouble he did so yesterday it’s bright krocus un assured winner now surely she’s miles clear coming up to the line bright krocus well in front of silk pajamas first bright crocus second silk pajamas and third goodbye Shelly bright kroer there putting up her run of the season but the very next day we had probably the 2-year-old performance of the whole campaign Gus in the champagne state only five Runners but they represented the best former round all systems go the Goodwood winner top of the north so impressive at ripen Proclaim an easy winner at newb and New Market and on stage second to the top rated deep roots in the pre morning here’s what Gus did to them and go Rus now is going into the lead from on stage Proclaim coming with a good-looking run all systems go has a bit to do on the outside as has top of the north but go Rus lengthens his stride now from on stage and Proclaim below the distance and it’s the favorite gorius trying to retain his unbeaten record and looking an assured winner coming up towards the line and it’s go lighters well clear in the LA berer close home go lighters Proclaim on stage first Gus second Proclaim and third on stage there were two things about gittis at this stage first how good he looked and second how well the form worked out what s the horse he beat at York here he is in the mil re Stakes at Newbury ending haraj His Marvelous unbeaten run holding off the consistent cfu and above all paying gas the sweetest of compliments between first and last and we have horage on the rails who’s been joined by fine Edge and on the outside still there crayon these three are pretty well all together Sally are only just after them they’re are furong and a half out now and it is crayon and sary who take it up on the outside Cafe is in to third then fine age and then horage and inside the final 150 yards it is salary by just about a length at this point inside the last 100 salary holding on well careu and on the near side we have crayon first saleri second was cfu and third crayon saleri wins the mil Reef with horage only fourth but if horage had a reverse Bri crocus ended her season with a disaster a burst blood vessel in the Hoover Phillies mile at ascet with Bri krus in trouble the race was between the previous winners Alat tricks dancing Meg Keith the minstral and Bri kogus is Don the victim climatized and these three clear from Emerald Reef bright Kus is dropping right out a furong and a half to race and it’s a climatized coming to challenge dancing Meg with Alat Trix trying to get on terms with the two leaders and these three are clear from key to the menstral and as they race down inside the final Fong and it is a climatize in the lead from dancing Megan alrix approaching the line acclimatize the leader from dancing Meg and alatri first a climatize second dancing Meg and third aliga Trix a climatized winning handsomely in the Thursday Gloom at ascet on the Saturday we had the the 50 to1 shock of buzzers Bay’s Queen Elizabeth but in the Royal Lodge there were no surprises just confirmation of dun be’s he potential opposed here by St bonface and leaf special so close together at Goodwood by Kuwait T who’d hung so badly at Sandown and by the noble player who won a ha do last time out it was a good race to take and dunbeath took it well but as they raced on towards the final furong and it is dun be who’s gone into the lead from leard special these two followed by Q8 and inside the last 100 yards it is dun be the leader from Leaf special and the noble player first D be second leard special and third the noble player so dunby took the Royal Lodge and we were now firmly into the big Autumn test next to Phillies and the Chev park at new Mar market and the chance to see if favid could look as good over six furong as she had done over five at Newbury wiard had another try so too to the old rival super on tant and Mara’s best and from France Mish with highest hopes in the race all she and favid really needed was room there wasn’t much of it to race sweet hemmer is now being pressed by super on taunt with M be trying to come through also fav improving as evening Bell drops back but as they come now to the final Fong and it is m who stormed into the lead being joined Now by Fage with super onon third a sweet EMT L his ground and as they race for the line it is mish the leader from Fage and super onon first Mish second favid and third Super anant CH Park went to an a away team in the middle Park next day he had an interesting threat or sighting shot from the oan Train ancestral winner of the Railway Stakes of the Cara didn’t fly the flag too well but Oro did from the G stable although he never looked like matching a flowing stride of Chris’s brother dasis who from the start and dasis now has just gone on once again with AO moving through into second place followed by crayon going down into the dip and dasis now the clear leader from Oro behind Oro crayon and ancestral and as they meet the rising ground it his dasis storming home clear from a ricko and crayon first dasis second Aro and third Kayan by the time Daris won the middle Park Henry C’s two-year-olds were carrying nearly all before them and another success was widely anticipated in the Duke of Edinburgh Stakes at ascet but Legend of France and even money favorite couldn’t handle the aset mud and fad into fifth place behind the promising Northern Adventure France two fongs to go strike Lucky from naabu Legend of France and on the far side Northern Adventure these four all disputed as they come to the furong pole with Northern Adventure taking it up inside the distance now with 150 go it’s Northern Adventure Ski sailing going on quickly this one moves into second place followed by naabu after this one strike lucky Northern Adventure from the improving ski sailing First Northern Adventure second ski sailing and third nibu a convincing start there by Northern Adventure but rumors persisted that the Yarmouth winner Lord protector was the best of the cile 2-year-olds well seeings believing and we see Lord protector now in the hyperian stakes at ascet opposed by tivian who’ been third to the fort at Goodwood and by the queen special leave who just been out gunned by another CLE horse now and again at York Special leave wasn’t missing to take it up at the two furong pole furong and a half to race now and it is special leave Lord protector comes up to challenge for second place with tivan on the far side and in fact to take it Fong to race now and it special leave by two two and a half lengths from Lord protector and tiv and these three going away from matachin and Goran and they’ve got a half Fong to go special leave holding up well and with 50 Ys go special Le still a clear leader tivian retakes second from Lord protector first special leave second tivian and third Lord protector special leave has Law protector floundering in admittedly heavy going but the least you can say from that race is that with special leave there’s a good chance of a live Royal Derby runner in 1983 the ASA conditions made it really tough for the sprinting 2-year-olds in the Cornwallis Stakes on the same day even so we were able to get yet another pointer to the star potential of gittis from the running of top of the north TTY bar so very tightly bunched at the two furong pole with probably those on the far side very fractionally ahead now top of the north comes to take it up what lake challenges Orange Squash Tatty bar goes fast and on the near side Max Palace Max Palace back in the lead again in fact but inside the furong little between the two and the far side goes on now with Tatar taking it up this one on the extreme Far Side 50 yards now and it is Tatar top of the north Max pal and wat Lake dispute third first tati bar second Max Palace and third top of the North in comparison at dter top of the north have been beaten 14 lengths by Gus in the champagne States so it’s no surprise that this stage of the Season whenever anybody talked to the 83 Derby they talked about Gus and the ultimate twist in this year of unfulfillment came when Gus squared up to dasis in the deur stakes was backed down to 2 to1 on despite some adverse rumors the day before looked okay before the race the leader Das is starting a run towards The Far Side Gus is fourth at this stage as they come to the final furong and a half it’s gordian and dasis but dasis comes to take it up now it’s dasis the leader from gordian and then comes tough Commander Gus is way behind they’ve got just under a f long left to go and it’s dasis striding clear of gordian then comes tough Commander Gus almost pulled up as they go to the line it’s dasis well clear of gordian and tough Commander first dasis second gordian and third tough Commander da is the winner and the first horse in 73 years to complete the middle Park duur double all the same horse lovers can only hope that whatever happened to Gus won’t stop him fulfilling that Limitless early promise one day do new day was a depressing afternoon because half an hour after gittis it was flamenco’s turn to lose an unbeaten record not so catastrophically perhaps but disappointingly nonetheless as she failed to hold sharp C thessalonica and the unraised saving Mercy in the closing stages of the Rockell Stakes ler D still prominent on the inside rail in five saving Mercy making ground on the outside with the black colors and the field still very tightly bunched as they start running down the dip towards the final one and a half furong flamco still in front but being strongly challenged on the outside by Saving Mercy coming through to join him and it’s saving Mercy on the outside who strikes the front and goes the length clear from thessalonica in second then comes flamco and behind him sharp SE and Julia flight but up towards the line saving Mercy’s clear of Thessalon and sharp sea first saving Mercy second thessalonica and third sharp sea saving Mercy starting her career in style even if at the expense of of an oddson failure and when much hailed horses like garitas and flamco seem to be getting it wrong it’s a good idea to look at some of the less exposed Alternatives that’s why the hton stakes is always interesting this year it had a typical collection of possibles it also had a rare case of pick at misjudgment when you pick mandl Stone rather than Vaso from the CLE stable but in the end why shouldn’t the winner Russian rles be best of them all o prominent in the center of the field then Behind These China Peak beginning a forward move running down towards the final two furlongs and on the far side it’s mandle Stam in front from Vaso just in Behind These comes oay then making a ground on the outside is Russian rubbles as they come now towards the final furong on the far side of the course it’s Vaso from mandle Stam and it’s Vaso with the advantage from mandle Stam as they race up towards the line now Vaso from mandl Stam quickening dorm finishing very strongly on the stand side in the brown colors but Vaso is holding them as they go towards the line Vaso from Russian rubles and cricking Dawn first Russian rubles second Vaso and third quickening Dawn Russian rubles is by ninski Vaso by far north quicking Dawn by to the quick and mandl stone by vaguely Noble All American foes in contrast to dasis impeccable British background in our final trial the William Hill Futurity it was once again American blood that triumphed with grey dawns son dunbeath looking every inch a classic Prospect amongst his opponents musti back from coughing and Robin who had traffic problems dun is not a good horse you can come and burn my video coming to the final two furlongs and it’s shackle pin and musti from Leaf special then dun beath beginning his run on the outside Robin and beldale Concord trying to get through and as they come down towards the final furong and dun be has now been switched to the outside and has gone into the lead from leafi special and musti and as they race for the line it is D be steadily drawing further away from Life of special and finishing very fast Robin first dun be second Robin and Third leard special so dun be closes up this year’s case book and incidentally clinches a remarkable sweep of the Colts prizes for Henry CLE who set a Stakes record for a season who’s to know what a year will bring all that we can be sure of is that when we look back later on most of it will make sense that’s the trouble with racing it’s full of lessons but most of them we only learn after they cost us something that’s why with this video we hope they may cost you slightly less
