Are custom fittings worth it? I headed to Ping’s European Fitting Centre in Gainsborough to find out just how much I could gain from using a custom fit driver compared to one off the rack.
My fitter Paul Rymer got my dialled in in not time and all and the results were very interesting!!

how much does a custom Club fitting actually affect your performance we’re here at the Ping European performance center to see how much I can get if I have a fully fit driver compared to one just off the rack okay we’re with Paul Rymer at ping we’re going from stock to fited can you explain what we’re starting with yeah so we’re just going to start with a g430 Max Head 10 and a half degrees just an um Ultra CB stiff shaft just pretty basic standard setup if you like see how I get on with a club and then how much we can dial it in afterwards so shot pattern wise what what’s normal uh well that was a bit healer so that wasn’t normal yeah so pretty neutral in general or do you like to move it around a b my Miss is left right okay we don’t like it going left my pass was actually one and a half right face was forclosed but it’s come right out the heel yeah it was heal how long is this 45 and 3/4 so standard length it’s launching high that isn’t it yeah you had to Du down to see yeah launch that at nearly 19 degrees so you you know your tack angle’s positive interest only spun it spun just under three so just hit us one more then and then we’re what we’re going to do we’re going to find out how efficient that is and then kind of start looking at changing a few [Music] things if you’re enjoying the video or even if you’re not just make sure you hit that subscribe button to help us make more really good content for you in the future right let’s go back to it so one one thing we tend to find a lot of a lot of golfers do is you know they’ll go on eBay and buy a driver and then start putting new grips on them plugging different shafts into the head and suddenly it kind of throws a whole balance of that Golf Club out so one real important part of what we do now is we we’ll probably swing weight somebody’s driver when they walk in and that can give us a lot of Clues as to why they’re hitting bad shots so that’s something we’ll we’ll do as well is actually look at the swing weight and kind of see if we can dial you in there as well my bad shots yeah well that might just be the reason why right okay so obviously kind of from a fitting point of view we definitely want to tighten this dispersion up I always yeah get you get you a lot tighter in there and then we’re looking at ball speed launch spin obviously distance you know your tack angle still going to be what you do but we know from your attack angle and your ball speed where we should be here and everybody can be different with launch and spin as well um so we’re just going to kind of Pop you onto this launch efficiency app and we’re going to work out how efficient that is and what we would need to do differently right so we going put your ball speed in there so 140 launch it at 14 spin it at almost just under 32 tack angle two and your spin axis so spin axis is basically how much that Ball’s tilting left to right um it’s just how um trapman measured measured side spin if you like so you’ve got five degrees of right spin axis on there doesn’t feel ideal that does it five not too bad yeah you won want it starting creep once it starts creeping up to d double digits where it can get a little bit extreme so at the minute we’re 90.2% efficient so not bad but we can hopefully get you DED in a little bit better so the gray area is your ideal kind of window to launch that ball okay um it works a little bit like the iing putting up that you saw this morning so Green’s really good this kind of orangey color is okay um red could be better um so we want to try and get this into green so this is what you currently do with that driver so you launch at 14 spin at 32 based on your ball speed and your attack angle this is your ideal so actually your launch isn’t a million miles away but we definitely want to get the spin down now if we did that your potential gain could be another 13 yards if we reduce that um spin axis um two of those yards could be reduced gaining two yards could be Reduce by reducing that spin axis so what it’ll do is well it give you a few fit nuggets so can evaluate impact location so we knew that one or two of those stripes were a little bit Healy and we could also consider you Lo using a low spinning head to get the spin down so it’ll it’ll the good thing with that it’ll give you a few little fitting nuggets to help you along the way right okay so what we’re going to do then is let’s do that so I guess the easiest way to get spin down is is loft is is changing Loft so let’s just keep the shaft for now come down to a 90° let’s see what that does for us when you’re trying to reduce spin but keep the launch angle how do you do that yeah so I think your launch angle is going to be really kind of more with you if you if you maintain your attack angle it’ll come from that it’ll still come from that so if the Loft can if can bring the spin down using LOF that might also help but we’ve got this bit of a left to right broad so it could be that going a little bit firmer and the shaft can bring bit of that spin down as well because a little bit of your spin is going to come from that spin axis mhm um so there’s going to be a little bit of as fitting always is it’s trial and error it’s always trial and error so it might be well we get the Loft down and it brings your spin down but actually it starts to increase your dispersion yeah so we might actually be better kind of going back to the same Loft as this but in a different head and looking more at that so so there’s a few things we’re going to try uh keep an open mind so let’s see what happens so right so that’s swinging roughly round about D five there or thereabouts so near nearly standard kind of Swing weight so again that might be one of those little fitting nuggets that as we go along if we kind of change the swing weight a little bit go a little bit lighter will it help the one that wants to go right without obviously getting you doing the shop that you don’t like and going left so there’s there’s lots of little things it’s just not one thing I it’s always like to me it’s like spinning plates you get you get your spin right and then you need to change the the something else to kind of get that dispersion tighter so let’s just do the basic stuff and come down in um loft and see what that does for us what loss you one that you play generally what’s your gamer uh that’s the 10 and a half but L of down yeah so we could even do that so again if you kind if we want to get your your spin down we could go 10 and a half down to 9 and a half we know it’s going to open the face a little so it might help the one that goes a little left at times as well so we we could even do that right okay so let’s just come down in L then let’s see what this does so same shaft just 90° and it was shot that was a good shot that felt faster full speed yeah yeah it was compared to the previous one so that’s definitely brought that flight down yeah that was not a center strike right so if you you come yeah so the downside of coming down in Loft so look what happens now look so we come down in Loft and suddenly this ball starts to spin less yeah but we start seeing this happen where that dispersion can get a little wider so ball speed is very similar 139 to 38 launch is very similar brought you spin down carry similar you’re going to get run out because you’re creating less spin but the downside is it’s getting bigger yeah so we obviously don’t want that so what we’re going to do then is go back to 10 and a half but change that head to a 10K and actually give you probably something that will play just a little firmer than that just to try and tighten this up a little bit as well I think so what’s the difference in shafts here so we’re going to go a little little heavier in the shaft still counterbalance but it’s just a little stronger a little bit stiffer tip um so I just want to see if that helps kind of tighten that left to right bias up yeah and this player is similar to the one that you’ve got in your bag it’s counterbalanced as well see missed that the launch is back up wasn’t it yeah launch Still Still launch it around that 14° this is like a blind test cuz I didn’t see yeah that was straight that was really good it felt ni never saw yeah that was nice and straight so obviously the advantage with like 10K drivers is that you can afford to kind of not necessarily hit it bang out the middle but we should see that dispersion tighten right [Music] up that go just launch a little high and that’s kind of almost yeah what what you don’t mind seeing almost like good bad shots but not your best strike but you know you still got it out there you’re still very tight in that dispersion yeah shot shot how’s that feel good cuz that’s important you know it’s not just looking at data it’s it’s kind of looking at this and how something’s going to feel so what we’re going to do then now we know we’ve got your spin nearer to where we feel you should be we’re just going to put that back in that launch efficiency app and see if that that changes anything see what it tells us we’re not going to be a million miles away from that I think oh there you go not bad so that’s efficient perfect this is a great fit this is a great fit yeah absolutely so there you go it did just tell it says evaluate impact location check te too that’s what I did on the last shot I just went to a lower te did you yeah yeah I do normally use those black pink T High just because the mats yeah just cuz the mat’s a bit fluffier like than makes it play a bit taller that’s right you did right there so so so there you go so slightly stronger shaft than we started with um similar L but just give you a 10K head because we know that you know I would say for better players who’ve got a bit speed that don’t always hit the middle it’s a really good driver for for that type of player as well as somebody that’s quite inconsistent yeah you know um we finding it it really fits both types of players really really well well well I feel like with driver like I just want to know where it’s going yeah there no good having distance if you’re like punching it out every shot exactly this is what you want I need to get my blades out and hit it Clos should we do a Strokes gain with that then right so we go gamer and then we’re going to go 10K so we’re going to put your driver distance into that first one 245 so distance actually has gone up marginally and then side 10 ft that’s a fway finder isn’t it yeah right there you go so Strokes gain is just under three three Strokes potential so you’re going to gain a fraction for your distance but a big lump of that is just having that really tight grouping so there you go so if you total up what you’re going to gain with your irons total up what you’re going to gain with a driver yeah I’m LPG LPG how long time one of the sign yeah we get you up on there put put pink cap on you you’re up there for Life get one of big ones up the top 100% optimized exactly you’re on it three shots around if you want a handicap to get three shots better need to go get a proper fit in absolutely yeah we did that in three moves as well so it doesn’t it shouldn’t take long if you if you’re efficient like you are and and you kind of you know you’re pretty much consistent with how you deliver Loft it it shouldn’t really be too difficult to get really dialed in but it’s amazing how many people people still don’t think a fitting is going to suit them or benefit them especially when they’re still buying the club especially when they’re still buying the golf club yeah like just get it dialed in yeah absolutely

Very interesting video but I would like to see if the next day or next week you tryout the driver. Do you hit the ball the same or are you going to need more adjustments? The average player does not have a consistent swing to repeat, so day to day your results with the same clubs is unpredictable. You can have the clubs fitted to your swing that session but your engrained swing will take over in the end. If you are a pro or excellent amateur golfer a club fitting will definitely improve your ball striking as they can repeat their swing!! I believe lessons help more than fitted clubs to improve a players ability….
Custom fitters only care if you are a good player. Otherwise, you don’t have the attention you need to really help.
600 US dollars…I would want a massive improvement over my 425 driver.
Hope to see you play gabbythegolfgirl.
You lost lots of weight Hannah 👏👏
Custom fitting won’t fix a poor swing. Spend the money on fixing the swing. Much better value long term.
So convenient 😮
Have had three fittings in my life (twice for driver, once for a 5W), I can honestly say I’d rather have invested in lessons. I think the only thing the fitters did was help me find a shaft that worked well with my swing. But that did nothing to help with slices, hooks, etc.
Get lessons first and then get the clubs tailored to your refined game.
Ping make the best drivers and have the best fitting service. Taylor Made is the worst.
Corrected if I'm wrong but you never showed the actual trackman data on the 'fitted' setup? What a waste of time. Apologies if I'm wrong.
Ive never done a fitting. A lot of my family members keep telling me I should go. Fortunate enough they have a ping fitter for me to go to. Thanks for sharing your experience!
Good rule of thumb… if you can play better than bogey golf with a mis-matched set of rental clubs, you should probably consider getting fitted for your next set.
Interesting video – but it isn't really how much does a custom fitting add when you change to a different head….you could have just picked up the 10K head at the beginning….anyone going in to spend $800 on a driver is going to hit it in the bay against a couple other models and pick the best one.
If you go to a fitting & tell the fitter that the driver you have off the rack, they already know that it will be easy to get yards out of you
Biggest scam in golf unless you are a pro
Wearing a Taylormade glove during a Ping fitting….At their fitting center.
When you’re getting fitted for the driver, whatever numbers are the best for you at the end you should be walking out with that driver. They should not be ordering one because no clubhead and shaft are identical everything has a tolerance.
I also believe that fittings are not helpful to players who are trying to improve their swing and have not yet “grooved” a swing. Too many variables might change in that time. When you’re happy with your ballstriking THEN you can fine tune your equipment to improve your game. To do that beforehand would be a waste in my opinion. My friend is a 20+ handicapper who just got completely fitted and spent over a couple thousand dollars.
But, his game has not improved because his swing is the issue. If he really wants to get better he needs lessons and practice. But, his custom fitting based on the 20+ handicap will mean that his lessons and practice will be limited by the changes he already made.
I just think that’s a backwards way of playing the game. IF you’re content being a weekend warrior who has no intention of bettering your game, then by all means get a fitting that can help straighten your slice a little bit, elevate your shots, etc. However, don’t suddenly decide to become a better golfer, because you’re going to be limited by the “ custom fitting” you had.
Hannah already has a grooved excellent swing. She definitely can be helped by a custom fitting as you see in this video. But, the fitter basically admitted that it was easy to help her because of the consistency of her swing. Unless you have that before seeing one, I just think you’re potentially going to be wasting a lot of money.
Key word: Proper fitter. The most difficult step.
so at her speed, if you leave the 16 degree launch alone and get her spin down closer to 2000, she would gain almost 5 yards of carry and total distance. No clue why you optimizer isn't suggesting that.
I never had a fitting. I watch you tube reviews and do a lot of reading. I bought a Paradym X 5 wood and my score improved dramatically. I bought it with the stock specs. Good enough for me
Your balance is incredible!!!
One day I will get fitted……but for now I am playing Callaway Big Bertha War Bird driver, 3 wood and 7 wood….they are not as long as my Cleveland Launcher, Ping newer driver or Taylor Made but I have always been long enough so it is about fairways for me.
Getting a fitting for a full set and driver has seriously improved my game especially as being 6ft2” so standard clubs just too short causing tight swings. Shaft length was my main need but had angles modified as well to boost distance.
Just started golfing myself, went to golf mart and had a sales person dial me in on a driver and 5 wood. Swung a few different clubs and he made some adjustments and I left with the 2 clubs that I was most consistent with. Really cool dude took his time and it was free. Every place I’ve been to after that the sales people really could give a care less. This is what I think works best for a beginner.
I have a buddy that got me into this game that shoots 80- hi 80’s every time we go out. He would benefit from a fitting. I keep telling him but he’s stubborn, dude still swings old Skool burner irons, Dunlop wedges, tsi1 driver. Nothing fancy in his bag but the dude is consistent. With a proper fitting I think he could get down to mid 70’s quick.
As an amateur golfer there are two or three keys aspects as to why we don't get a 'quality' custom fit. Firstly, the 'quality' custom fit centres aren't all that well available, and certainly not to the extent shown in many youtube videos. Secondly, the cost….fitting centres only hold the newest clubs and lets be honest prices are going up and up year on year, to the point of being unaffordable to most when playing for fun. Here you are a Ping centre where 14 clubs is probably going to set a player back £3k or £3.5k when fully fitted. Finally….because we are all constantly changing, and 2 or 3 years later we have a different grip, different stance, different technique from a lesson or two……and we've then just lost a fortune because we now need something different to suit everything which has changed since the last fitting. So we continue to search the second hand market for 1/2 price bargains of clubs that are 'good enough' for our needs as a casual player of golf for fun….
I had a fitting for irons a few years back. TBH I don't know whether I would have been better with game improvement irons but went for something right in the middle.
From your video do you really think that you had enough shots to be able to notice that much of a difference. I am not 100% convinced as the further you get into the fitting the more warmed up you.
Some of your expressions were priceless – I feel like that a lot
I have custom fitted my clubs, but also got one set I bought of the rack, wouldn’t say the score changes so much. More of how I putting 🙂
I'm female, 60+, and a returner to the game after many years of not really playing. I waited until I had a couple of years under my belt then went to get custom fit for a driver 4 years ago and ended up with not just driver but full set of irons too. Definitely the best thing I could have done but in my experience most pro shops are not exactly blessed with a huge range of clubs/demos for ladies. If you can get along to a demo day take advantage of it.
45 3/4 is not a "standard length" shaft. Its a stupidlly long shaft borderlline long drive desinged to trick people into thinking this driver goes further than last years when they hit 1 in 10 out the middle
Clubs are ridiculously expensive at this point. If you have the money, by all means get a fitting. Do you know what getting a fitting will do for you?? Take more money out of your wallet. They will ALWAYS upgrade the shaft to something ridiculously priced. Unless you are a really, really good golfer, or very short or very tall, or a very serious bad golfer, I doubt you will save many strokes from a fitting. Like a lot of other people are saying, spend the money on lessons instead. Older clubs work great with a decent swing. If you really want to save strokes, learn how to chip and putt.
But how much extra on top of the clubs do the fitting cost?
