a lot of headlines around Scotty sheffler But ultimately it was Xander Schley who was able to break through and have his major moment at Valhalla and what a way to get it done by biring the 72 hole and get his first career major victory for Xander and for many it felt like a long time coming he had so many close calls in majors and finally now is off that list of best players without a major so he well deserved breather after xandy Xander won the PGA Championship here he is on the par 34th now back in action and picked up right where he left off the putters still good short game still good he seems to not has not missed a beat part five seventh and this was really the story for him today he just hold the putts he needed to over and over again so he’s now at a couple under through seven Par 38 here he is in the bunker he’s got good hands he doesn’t and if he just decides to just land this out of the bunker it’s going to land on a down slope and kick but he takes it flies it to the flat with spin leaving it in the proper spot would go on to make par avoid a bogey on the card as we cross to the backside par five 11th shley and he just didn’t really miss anything today inside 10 ft the way he is so steady over that ball uh his mechanics with the putter are just spectacular more from Sha how about this shot on 15 this was incredible laid it up to a kind of a tough spot to get to and showed his incredible touch he has with the wedge these top players right now certainly have everything going so you look at chof card I mean the putter carried the day just 25 putts on the round bogy free for that four under 68 here’s Xander on what was the best club in his bag today I puted really well you know I in the field and putting yeah it it felt that way uh even with that Miss there on 18 um yeah I’m going to go to the range after this after we finish talking and uh you know hit the center of the club face a little more find some more Fairways and some more greens it was I’m you know I’m happy I’m happy with how I played with how I stuck in there and really happy my short ging bailed me out on a day that could have been a lot worse if I didn’t make some of the putts I needed to today it would have been you know like a two over probably or worse so uh again really happy I was able to see the I saw the line sort of quickly um even from the first from the gecko I was kind of leaving putts in in the heart short so as soon as I kind of got the speed down I was I was rolling just the kind of followup you want out of what happened two weeks ago uh yeah yeah um yeah it’s it’s good I’m in a good spot you know um I think Todd told me Scott put to a foot on 18 so he’s at five so you just want to be in touch it’s only Thursday and um plenty of gol I just know I really need to clean clean up some of that longer stuff um this course is really hard and the wind’s supposed to blow pretty hard tomorrow even more so than today so I know I need to I need I need to clean it up so he’s had a couple weeks since we last saw him in Louisville you just see the score 68 it’s okay he’s picking up right where he left off but if you dig into the round was that the case well I mean he only hit eight Fairways which is hard to do the the fairways at mirfield villager wide and the way he was driving the ball at Valhalla that was a little bit surprising little bit of a sign of rust didn’t hit a lot of greens because of it but what was impressive to me was the way his short game bailed him out like he said and his putting bailed him out and if we just look back to the PGA Championship his last start this is on 17 he was in the Fairway bunker hit it to the proper spot look at that interaction with the turf he is so good with a wedge around his green around the greens that it just makes life easy when you can do stuff like this under pressure and now here he knows he needs to get this up and down to win the PGA Championship and to have that kind of technique and that kind of control going up a steep face to give himself a chance which he would ultimately make that putt that’s what won him the PGA missing and so we go to today we just saw this one on eight this is not that easy of a shot if you catch it and land it in the wrong spot it’s going to scoot over right into that Fringe but Xander just knowing he needed to nip it like the control he continues to show after maybe wanting to show some Rust this was it for me the par putt on 10 after making about an eight-footer on nine for par goes ahead and buries it in there you see the pace in which that hit the hole that’s confidence and then again this pit shot on 15 uh coming up the hill skipping it up kind of reminds me of the shot he hit on 18 at the PGA Championship just under control not getting it past the hole and leaving a four-f footer down thehill leaving it underneath in the uphill parut that to me shows that he came in ready to play short game and putting is where I think rust would would have the most effect you can get away with hitting a few bad drives but to stay bogey free on this golf course kind of spraying it for him was what I mean it was incredible yeah and the sustained run that Xander Schley has been on his last six starts five top 10 finishes he went runner up at Wells Fargo win at the PGA Championship four under 68 day one here at the memorial
