[Music] well it started as um a pilot program for the future links with golf Canada and we’ve just kind of expanded it from a lesson program with the element of crafts to kind of break it up and keep it exciting and and just have a variety of stations to adding uh the play nights here that we’re doing um that take their girls from kind of becoming range players to really truly understanding the game and getting out and getting a chance to to learn about the rules of etiquette and the pace of play piece of that and doing it in an environment where they’re not threatened at all and where they’re with girls the girls club is a junior golf program for only junior girls and my role has been the program coordinator for the past 6 years and I also do some instructing as well so I’ve been running the Craft Center and all of the short games so I work with the girls on their putting and their chipping I like meeting the other girls and to just be like out playing golf I like that I can learn new things about Golf and that I can try new things and all the crafts and activities that we do I met lots of friends and this has also helps me practice to I’m on the real course it’s really fun and if you want to get better at golf they’ll teach you how I think it’s a really fun experience and it really helps you with your golf they actually take time to uh focus on your specific needs i’ like it that you can meet new girls and meet new friends and maybe you’ll see someone you know during Girls Club we teach pretty much everything that relates to golf cuz our goal is to get girls um ready and comfortable to be on the course and be independent so we start from the really fundamental stuff like posture stance grip all that kind of thing and then we work them up into technical shots um on course play etiquette the rules of golf sometimes that’s like you know very foreign when you’re starting out having done this as long as I have um those basic fundamentals and learning the grip stance posture alignment the pre- swing things that are critical elements to building a base and and starting with the game of course we teach some life skills in there it’s not really scripted but if there’s an opportunity that comes up to talk about sportspersonship or perseverance or honesty or any of those things we build on that and and really make it kind of a a life skills program as well as the golf side so the craft was part of the original Girls Club pilot from golf Canada and it was an idea to try and help girls stay engaged with golf and we found that it actually makes the world of difference so we structure are lessons that they’re broken up with a craft so we usually start them with full swing on the Range we stop we do a craft that I always try to relate to golf to try and Inspire passion in golf through craft and then after they’ve had that nice little creative break then we put them back into their golf activities basically I’ve kind of uh been the one who’s put it together and worked with it and made sure it goes uh but Mel’s really taking it over and um so I I’m involved in the teaching side I’m involved in making sure that it all goes and that we’re set up good and that we’ve got facilities and and that we’re good to go but um the reality is that uh the modeling with having younger girls that have played at a higher level uh is really positive and and and makes it Go part of the difference is that our goal is to make them feel comfortable and welcome and like this is their own space and in other situations that’s not so much the case especially for girls there’s not as many girls in Gulf and it can be really challenging to find an environment where you feel comfortable to learn CU in so many situations you know there will be one or two girls at a club or they’ll have one person to play with whereas you know we’ve got lots of girls coming out here and we want them to to have a great experience we want them to have fun and we want them to be able to continue with the game and we’ve been successful the programs fill pretty quick and uh we couldn’t be happier with how the program has evolved they’re really good at teaching and like making sure they it’s fun but they Al people also learn they’re probably the best coaches I’ve had at golf I like the fact that they’re very patient coaches and they also help with what you need to learn they were really kind and they also taught me lots of things I actually didn’t know I just think they’re really kind and they take time to explain things in a way everyone can understand [Music]
