to be with you I brought back up I brought back up today normally I freshly made freshly made yes um I we’ll get to that in just a second um yeah I normally am a one cup guy but um my little girl had her end ofe choir performance it’s what’s called show choir so um there’s like dancing and you know just I I it made me really appreciate the privilege that she has and that we have because music is a program that is dying in schools that don’t have the budgets for it and there’s there’s funding enough in in her school to you know basically pay the teacher and then you know there’s a lot of fundraisers that are done to you know help these kids get instruments if if they can’t um you know my daughter also has played trumpet for eight years now um and and then they go on these trips to uh you know they went to like Six Flags a couple weeks ago Disneyland earlier this year and and and then they they have these performances you know they’ll basically do something fun surrounded by these contests they do um with other schools around the state and it’s just so rewarding for them it’s they they they I see her she’s working so hard you know she’ll be in the garage she has a little area there where she can she needs privacy I don’t blame her you know probably pretty dumb trying to practice you know show choir I hate recording something in from the people right right exactly you don’t want an audience uh especially when you’re you’re you’re you’re learning it uh and also you’re a teenager so everything is embarrassing anyways but the amount of work these kids put in you know we you know it’s annoying to uh you have to drive them everywhere but M you know they’re they’re the ones that are doing school then their homework then they do these you know 2hour practice sessions at night um and then uh and and then they they work for these shows and you watch these kids uh who have worked so hard uh you know put it all out there uh and and it really is cool to see the development and and just let’s be honest I I’ve been going to you know every you know I’m sure other people can identify been through this uh you go to performances from when your kids are in you know like first grade or whatever and it’s super cute and it’s basically a photo and video session but you know look little kids generally suck at performing they’re little kids they’re off key they you know they’re all playing their instruments together I remember her first performance and it was like an Advil commercial where everyone’s just you know there’s some kid on the drums going way too hard the one kid whose parents forced him in there so he’s like on the triangle like just not caring and then anyone who’s on a saxophone trumpet whatever you know and you’re just sitting there trying to not think of ways to off yourself the whole time and then you see the development through the years where they actually you know practice and learn and all that and I know that and and I I just couldn’t help but think watching man you know there are so many schools around the country that don’t you know they just don’t have the funding for that they don’t have the ability to do that and and I I I feel bad because it it’s super rewarding and uh they and one thing the teacher does is every uh every performance they’ll do like a modern song and do an arrangement so like last night it was uh uh the one was a creep by radio head and uh just to get you know give you an idea this is scolin and kachy if you’ve never seen them um but they uh they they they do I not this I did they they it’s a basically a choir that does a bunch of modern songs so here here an idea this is this is my kid just give you an idea of what it get my point it’s it’s it’s weird right but it’s like the trailer to a horror movie it that’s kind of where everything’s going right now that’s the trend is you’ve got like I actually have a playlist of this on Spotify where it’s all it’s called reimagined covers so it’s like uh you know fortunate Sun by CCR sung of this haunting way or uh black hole sign with this breathy sounding female vocalist that and and I like it my favorite’s probably I think I’ve played I played it on here before uh for highlights but uh like uh they reimagined Gangsta’s Paradise and uh you know all violins and all this crazy stuff anyways um late late night last night I think it was about it was just before midnight uh that I finally turned in and uh because you know you gotta wait for them to do their thing and blah blah blah but I’m I’m super proud of her uh it was cool but then yeah so uh double up on coffee today and we’ll get to that now so yes um so I’m a gadget guy and shockingly and waste way too much money on stuff like that and I had wanted this coffee maker for a long time and it’s it’s like this coffee maker that you pour the beans in you pour the water in and then it’s got like this digital display on the front and makes like you hit a button it’s got a little picture of the drink and it makes like 15 different drinks it’s got this little attachment on the side and you pour milk creamer whatever you want you attach it on the side let’s say I want like a macchiato so I hit macchiato and it grinds the beans and it does the espresso shot and then it Foams the milk and then it drops the milk in there so it’s like an actual like starbuy type thing right so I’ve had this thing for about six months it’s like I wanted it so bad I finally convinced my wife to let me do it I got it uh it was like and I and I’m just such a dumb consumer because the whole time I’m like I’ll have real Starbucks style coffee drinks every morning in the comfort of my home and then when people come over and they want something after a meal hey what would you would you like a macchiato would you like a RTO would would you like a a latte whatever you wish it’ll actually save money in the long run 100% my pitch to my wife yes is expensive but in the long I even did the math I’m like you know because we don’t you know we’re not like Starbucks people all the time but you maybe once or twice a month we’ll go there Dutch Bros or whatever you know whatever I’ve never understood I I I drive by one every day around 5:00 amm by my house and without a doubt when I leave there’s probably about seven cars in line and then when I drive home I always look over and there’s about 15 cars in line at about 10 that’s what I don’t get about Dutch Brothers It’s usually like packed like not in the morning right just all day well what what it is is it’s just you’re just it’s a sugar company you’re you’re these people are addicted to caffeine and sugar and they’ve got to have it and they’re sitting there for 10 15 minutes in line just running their cars and these are the same people that [ __ ] about gas prices running their cars so that they can go pay $8 for some sugar drink that’s going to tweak them out all day I mean they’re they’re look they’re they’re strung out they’re definitely strung out my wife’s friends are there’s no one worse than them man they just they gotta have it they gotta have their Dutch Bros or their star whatever anyway I’m not I’m not here to judge so oh I’m kind of here to judge but I’m saving money right but here’s the problem I get up in the morning now my old coffee maker it was a fine it was just a regular drip coffee maker you put the water in then you put the grounds in and you hit the button and it has one alternate button where you can hit if you want extra strong so I hit that okay on and and then it’s got a timer so I set the timer for 3:00 a.m and by the time I walk downstairs hey full C full pot of coffee I’m good to go and then my wife wakes up she’s got it for her that’s our Old Co we still have that right because my wife refuses to learn how to use the new coffee with a new coffee maker I come downstairs I turn it on I pick my drink and the first it it takes about 30 seconds for the water in there to warm it says warming up I hit the button okay now it’s ready to go and then it’s grind the beans and then it’s the espresso type and then the the espresso goes in but because I do a double shot it finishes the espresso and then ring for the beans for the espresso and then the real loud sound is the foaming of the milk the whole process takes about three minutes and at that time of morning I’m just sitting there I got crap to do man so what’s going on now I now have this coffee maker I use maybe once a week on the weekends when I have the time and I’m using the other you know $30 coffee maker and I don’t want to tell you what this other one cost dude I’ll tell you in your ear I know I no uh um oh man I’m out of cash yeah Chris is still laughing um yeah dude it was just it was one of those where it’s like okay and God knows it’s going to break down at some point I’m sure it’s a Phillips coffee maker it’s it’s GNA die Uh Kevin says I can’t believe Dave of all people doesn’t have a CG no we did have a cing and we it’s still it’s like the cupboard now we we have a cuing this thing is just like a kg on steroids MC says what is what is he snarking today I’m sure it’s snarking anyone with a car unlike yours Dave for some reason unlike in yours is in all caps is complaining about gas lucky you is that a shot at me having an electric car I can’t I’m trying to understand it’s something it’s something crappy but is that a shot at me having an electric vehicle I don’t sorry I an electric vehicle that was cheaper than the gas vehicle I had before you saw the car I had before this one the black oh yeah yeah that car was significantly more expensive I think that’s a you know Teslas are so political now but I think I’ve said this before I think that’s the the biggest misconception about a Tesla is that they’re like oh my God you have a Tesla what a FL no act I mean there are Teslas that are Flex cars don’t get me wrong the trucks yeah the trucks and uh and the the the Plaid the 100 the p100s that have the the ludicrous mode th those are you know 80,000 $100,000 cars dude I bought my model 3 my 20 I think it’s a 2022 model 3 for 25,000 at hoblet like legit that’s that’s far cheaper than my previous car and I’m not look I’m not here to say $25,000 isn’t a lot of money it’s all in perspective but when you you get that and then you’re you’re saving money on the Ming with you you what I said I’m just messing with you I was thinking like oh perfect toet yeah I’m sitting like do we have a break anyway I I I will never unless it’s a specialty car I will never go back I’ll I’ll never leave electric dude I love it so much I could not recommend it more to anyone looking but apparently that’s all electric cars are also political now like there’s like a whole don’t get your electric car because the what it cost they say it’s a larger carbon footprint than having a do we know that yeah no I mean like do we know that it is because like of what it takes power it or whatever my goodness gracious I don’t know this stigma like come on man it’s not a you know I mean nowadays every choice you make is a political choice I know it’s just God and there’s just like weird you’re watching the NBA and there’s just like weird Vin diagram have you noticed of like and it’s so crazy it’s like crypto the live golf tour and like there’s like one other thing I’m forgetting that like that that I wouldn’t think would be in the segment but it is you you almost can’t do anything anymore I was like oh you’re doing that are you oh oh I see I know I know how you voted that like oh I just I got I like the car I like the car I had a Bud Light I don’t know I uh I listen to this music did I get the charger for the house yeah it was like 300 bucks had them install it and uh and I got solar at the house so I’m super envir I’m super I’m super environmentally conscious I have I have solar the house uh I charge my vehicle at the house you know it’s you got to take uh you know accountability these days you with all your don’t judge anybody man do what you want we’re all gonna die here’s what I this my motto we’re all going to die every one of us that’s the one thing we all have in common we’re all gonna die I don’t know I have a pretty good feeling as I reach middle age I was thinking about this last night as we go to break this was my go to bed thought last night I was like God from this point on here’s what I have to look forward to because all my dogs were on the bed with me and I don’t know why it triggered me but I was like you’re all again this is the best case inario this is assuming I don’t get hit by a car today I was looking at my dogs I’m like you’re all going to die in front of me my kids are going to leave they’re all going to go off and get their own families I’m going to be begin slowing down physically and mentally hanging out and going to doctor’s appointments is going to become a regular part of my life as my body slowly decomposes into old age I’m going to start understanding less and less of pop culture and everything as I already am like there’s just not a lot to look forward to once you get to a certain point and you look ahead at like your 50s your 60s or 70s you’re like ah this is this sucks like it just is really sad when you actually get into it you’re just going to decompose everyone around you is going to leave you or die and then you’re going to die this is your same mentality when the kings are up 20 points 100% dude and all that’s going to happen and the kings are never going to win really have uh any issues with that whatsoever I think they got it right second team Jaylen Brunson Anthony Davis Kevin Durant Anthony Edwards kawhai Leonard I don’t necessarily have any uh issues with that though I do think that Damonte Simon should have been second team ahead of Anthony Davis I think he had a better year than Anthony Davis and uh I could see I could absolutely see uh an argument for Tyrese How Berton being in probably over Anthony Edwards even though Edwards came on strong late and halberton had some injuries so I understand that a little bit more uh second straight year that damont sabonis makes an all NBA team and how cool is it like just just for a second how cool is it that both damonta sabonis and Tyrese halberton both made the third team that’s so cool like the guys that were traded for each other have basically had the same individual success obviously Indiana’s having more team success right now but it it just kind of goes to show you how rare and how cool that trade was I will say this though Chris so Damon sabonis got 104 total points he had a first team vote 16 second team 51 third team tyr Alberton did not get a first team vote he got two second team and 69 third teams nice so their total points in the voting tally sabonis at 104 halberton had 75 by rule that means we kind of won the trade we got the better player every AG that better bubble in certain things I do that and I go am I is that weird that I listen to like these random types of music or to other people does everybody do that you remember on the old night show were you on the old night show when we had the big argument about wiping what you’ll remember this if you were like I was I don’t know how it came up but it was about wiping and somebody maybe somebody called in was like yeah and then I I stood up to wipe and I hit my head on the and I was like hold on and it caught my head I went wait you stand what do you mean you stand up to wipe he’s like dude when I wipe I stand up and maybe you weren’t on the show then that because it I did not remember okay then you weren’t because you would because it was basically two hours this was like around 10 o’clock it was 9 to midnight it’s like 10 p.m. and I swear the rest of the two hours was almost entirely I would say about 30 to 40% % of the people that called up were like yeah I stand why wouldn’t you that’s weird and I’m going through the whole like trigonometry of why you sit and lean and and if you stand you’re basically a serial killer but like I also learned so much from that show and I know it sounds like immature toilet humor but that’s not my point my point is we how would you ever know that maybe if you’re in the military or something where everybody’s going next to each other and in that environment but let’s be honest when you’re in the bathroom you’re by yourself you don’t know what the world’s bathroom habits are and then when somebody says yeah I stand I go what are you talking about you alien what what what are you doing there is a weird thing of when you do something that every everyone else has an idea of it but you do it completely different and then someone like you’ll say that and someone like wait what what are you talking about how how does that work and how do you you don’t know that if you don’t talk about it but who talks about nobody talks about put the milk inside the cereal box and then I pour it like oh god dude no you’re we I know we did do a thing on that where it was like there are people in this world that pour the milk and then the cereal and it’s like bro you murder animals I think I’m 90% sure of that pouring the milk before the cereal cereal topping honey sugar whatever you’re doing then milk wait what if you’re going for seconds what do you do well the milk’s already in there yeah so you pour the cereal the new cereal on top of the remaining milk and then augment the milk that’s already in there yes but it’s also um like brushing teeth toothbrush run it underwat for a second then toothpaste then a little bit of water for a second then I brush I I’m pretty sure there’s a lot of people that do things differently than that but that’s my thing but how do you know what other people do anyway Celtics Pacers came too is tonight uh that will be on ES PN uh as we continue to uh preor the loss of Inside the NBA this will be ESPN coverage of course so that’s why Inside the NBA is on location in Minnesota and eventually um uh in Dallas uh game one was fantastic we can get an entire series like we can game one that would everybody’s behalf I hope we just get a good game watching Tyrese halberton just being featured uh in in all of these uh you know leaders of the NBA future Superstars like I saw a whole montage on him yesterday uh during a commercial and you it’s like I said in the last segment you know you can’t help but watch that and go he was a king and you know not again not trying to revisit the whole thing you guys know how I feel about the trade but the just re just seeing that of course you’re gonna get a little fomo it’s okay to have fomo it’s okay to have the whole fear of missing out because the Kings didn’t make the playoffs and Tyrese halberton and the Pacers are eight wins away from winning a championship on house money right now does not matter they could get sweat by the Celtics and this was still a fantastic team and their offseason is going to be filled with all kinds of excitement whereas this off season uh is being filled with all kinds of trepidation and worry um I know there’s been a lot of uh hustle and bustle and talk uh yesterday uh uh James ham who’s covered the Kings for years wrote a an article about amongst other things Mike Brown’s uh uh you know situation and all that and uh I I I hope I’m going to get it right there was a line in there that was basically I’m paraphrasing but said the Kings did not the Kings didn’t make the playoffs last year after making it the year before and that didn’t sit well with ownership and then a couple of you know Twitter accounts and National Publications uh took that as ownership is unhappy with Mike Brown which was just stupid and a leap uh and that’s not what James said and of course it’s not going to sit well with ownership well missing the Playoffs actually sat very well with own of course it’s not going to sit it didn’t sit well with fans either it didn’t sit well with Mike Brown or the players nobody liked missing the playoffs after making them the year before uh but now there’s this big thing about oh is Mike Brown on the outs hey go to this team go to that team I will tell you this um Mike Brown I I will tell you right now Mike Brown is almost I would say I am 98% sure based on sourced information that coach Mike Brown will sign an extension this summer and it will probably be somewhere in the threeyear 30 to threeyear 33 million range with a uh probably a mutual opt out for a fourth year I’m not I’m not entirely sure on what that fourth year is going to be but they’re going to give him an extension and it’s going to be around 10 11 million do a year from everything I hear they’re incredibly close on that and uh it’s more of a when not an if so you know stranger things have happened don’t get me wrong it’s never until it’s signed but I feel absolutely comfortable uh in saying that that is uh that is all but a done deal and will not lead into next season so that’s a little bit of good news uh when it comes to the all-nba getting back to that real quick I I it really did kind of tickle me that not only did did domas make the uh third team although he probably should have been second um but you you have that third team consist of Devon Booker Steph Curry LeBron Tyrese halberton and Damonte sabonis that’s pretty good company to be in and the fact of the matter is there’s two current or former kings that are on that list and halberton and sabonis being traded for each other just makes it kind of that much more fun like I said the first team of Giannis Luca uh Shay NOA joic and Jason Tatum I think they nailed that I don’t really have any issues with the second team other than I probably would have subbed Anthony Davis for damont sabonis I just would have switched them that might be purple glasses but I think sabonis had again you lead the you lead the league in rebounds you’re six in assists you score 40 points on 60% efficiency uh and you basically had the same year the Lakers did that that that’s a that’s a better year for me I I think I I truly think they had a better year uh no dear and fox uh he did get some votes no dear and fox and uh that’s that’s interesting to me you got a guy who led the league in steals averag 26 27 points a game um that’s unfortunate and and it makes me wonder too we might get to this a little bit later but when you’re looking at like for example the all defensive teams I wonder if those should also be you know how we we said for the first team all NBA make it position l so that way embiid and joic can make it I wonder if they should switch that for the all defensive team because there’s just such a big man bias I honestly believe if you lead the league and Steels you should automatically be all NBA first team I you lead the leagan steals like if you leave the league in Block shots odds are you’re going to be on the all-nba first team defensively and I’ll it is an absolute fact to me that a steel is better than a block shot it it is and we explained this last week I think 100% of the time when you steal the ball you have possession 100% of the time the other team has possession you steal the ball you have possession that is the true definition of what a steal is how many times do you see a shot block and it either goes out of bounds or it goes back to the other team and they retain possession by fact a steel is better than a block I’d rather have a guy with five Steals and five blocks any day of the week now we can argue as to whether or not blocks are a better thing overall because it Alters shots and maybe a guy doesn’t block a shot but he Alters a shot or somebody doesn’t want to go inside and that’s not g to happen with a Ste I get that it’s a fair argument it really is a fair point but how can you lead the league in steals and not be on an all defensive team not not even the Anthony Davis four herb Jones who’s not a center but is still bigger five and then you get to Drew Holland six Shay gild is seventh Derek white eighth peruso was 11th Jaylen Suggs who got one defensive player of the year vote but ended up making I think the all defensive third team it I it’s just uh I I I just think it’s lazy like you’ve got your outliers like goar and wanyama that are true blue big men defensive goalie Stoppers they’re they’re in their own category and I I appreciate that but other than that if you gave me a choice between an all defensive big man and an all defensive Wing give me the wing just in reality think about how few and far between like dude if you’re tall and you can move you can block shots but think about the real who are the the the best players in the game so many of them are right around that Wing area think about the JW holidays of the world the Marcus smarts of the world the mecal bridges of the world hell Keegan Murray’s getting there and the work they have to do as opposed to and again no offense to the big men but let’s be honest the big man’s just kind of patrolling his little area in the key near the key and then somebody drives and oh hey let me go block the shot or alter the shot that’s not as much of a defensive assignment in my opinion as it is somebody like Anthony Edwards last night who was dog tired late in the fourth quarter who had been chasing Kyrie Irving all around you’re telling me that chasing around and effectively guarding Steph Curry is not as tough a defensive assignment as Rudy goar patrolling the key I I just I don’t believe that from a cardio standpoint an athletic standpoint a basketball IQ standpoint a footwork standpoint but I I I we’ll talk to Sam about this at 8 a uh and I’m very curious how he what his criter IA is as a voter when he goes with a defensive player of the year and the defensive first second third teams number two please question two did the wolves get screwed by it maybe they were the best of friends and and I lean more towards that but it does make you wonder why would you fire a coach why would you fire a coach that’s averaged almost exactly 50 wins over the last two years and supervise this kind of rebuild that Cleveland’s gone through I mean they ran into the Boston Celtics they’re not there yet was that on JB Becker staff they had a ton of injuries postseason and regular season was that on JB bicker staff but you fire him going into the off season that stinks of owner involvement Andor not an emu do obviously it was a whole different thing but remember everybody is shocked about em adoka and before you found out what really happened it was oh he must not be getting along with players uh it I’ll tell you the no the better comparison is it stinks of uh Adrien Griffin with the Bucks the results were there but there was something behind the scenes with the players from a result standpoint JB bicker staff has no business being fired no please question three if Inside the NBA keeps everyone but Ernie who could take that spot okay first and foremost let’s be clear you you can’t replace Ernie Johnson he’s Irreplaceable so just get that out of the way that’s not the question I specifically did not say who replaces Ernie Johnson because there’s no replacing what I’m saying is if Ernie Johnson as as he said doesn’t leave Turner and Turner loses the NBA that leaves NBC uh what Amazon ESPN you know that that’s who’s got it so if one of those decide to grab Charles and Shaq and Kenny and Ernie doesn’t doesn’t leave whoever they replace whoever they put in Ernie’s place I guess would be the proper way to say they’re gonna get killed because they’re not Ernie so the question is who would be the best suited for that job who’s not named Ernie Johnson uh I saw a clip from a few years ago and it was Greg Gumble uh with Kenny and Charles it was an it was NCAA coverage because they switch over for that Clark Kellogg was there too I think I think I think Greg Gumble would actually be pretty decent I think it needs to be somebody like that a name that everybody knows a name that has pretty Universal respect both in the industry and amongst fans and somebody who is absolutely happy just teeing these guys up letting them go but who also has respect enough to be able to kind of control and guide the environment who who who is able to make peaceful decisions in the the storm of chaos which is what that show is what Ernie does so well he may not be a a Gumble fan on his own but I’m talking about the way his chemistry is with these guys in in the times I’ve seen on the college side uh but again he’d probably have to leave his Network too I I I’m saying Greg Gumble type and there aren’t a lot of Greg Gumble types going on in the world and I hate to say it but I think I think college football players need an agent more than pro football players need an agent yeah we talked last week about Pro players going it alone because there’s kind they’re you know if they’re drafted fourth in the first round there’s a slot for that uh you kind of know what you’re going to get and here he got in the college world you have a lawsuit filed by Jaden rashada because of$ 13.85 million nil deal went South with the University of Florida and he’s saying no you guys you guys were full of crap you you promised me this nothing ever came of it how dare you you’re not going to do it to someone else I’m suing you uh and uh so I I think I think there is more agents a need for agents in the college game and the pro game currently yeah I am a a lifelong DieHard college football fan and and one of the things that’s unfortunate really about this Market I found through the years is there’s not there’s not the appetite to talk college football as there is you know you you go into SEC country East Coast Midwest south even um there there are shows out there where it’s college football year round like we talk Kings and then you move on to the other sports right and out here it’s and and I think it’s because and no disrespect to the programs in Northern California but sack State UC Davis Cal Stanford they’re not competing for division one national titles so I I I I think that’s part of the problem it’s just a different environment I’m a Florida State guy that’s where my parents went I’m obsessed with college football I love college basketball but Kelly I I think I I think I’m like a lot of other people even though we work in the business so we have to keep tabs on it I’ve gotten so confused and so completely out of touch with the transfer portals and nil deals and what’s legal and what’s not I’ve started to kind of tune it all out and I’m just waiting to watch the games and know who my team is in in in in in late August and September and just hope I win a National Championship and all the other crap I I I don’t I get paid to do this and I don’t know what the hell is going on well uh I I know but it just it it changes so F I mean just you know even Fox coming out with a Friday night lineup Friday night was always Sacro Saint No One touched it because of high school football y but Fox is coming out of the lineup now every Friday now granted are you going to tune in to see North Western playing Maryland I don’t think so um but but they are coming out with a lineup a lot of it is former Pack 12 and um I’m throwing out an invitation Right Here and Now Dave uhuh um November I forget the date but I going back and I would love you to join me Florida State at Notre Dame beautiful South Indiana and I would love to have you come back so check check the schedule if you’re not in uh huttersfield town that week uh wouldd love to have you or maybe a hit O’Hare on the way back and come on in but anyway that that that I’ll throw that out but it it’s just a uh it’s a different it’s a different animal right now and and Friday Night Football and you got espan buying the rights and then subleasing the rights to the college football playoff to TNT uh which has never been done before so rules are being broken maybe they weren’t there was no reason for the rule in the first place but and and when I think of TNT I think oh my god well they please don’t put the NBA on TNT on college football that’s gonna work but but that show could go away um and which has been very popular with NBC still kind of grinding over whether or not they’re going to buy the NBA package and steal it from TNT let me go back to your invitation because Jason’s been obsessed and I love him for this you know my dad uh is is uh a few years older than me obviously and we want to get we’ve never seen a Florida State game together in Tallahassee and Jason every year has a bit where the schedule comes out and he’ll kind of throw out uh a great time to go so we’re bringing your dad then we’re bringing your dad well that’s the thing so you got FSU at Notre Dame I’m looking at it November 9th here’s the problem though is on November 30th in tally it’s Florida Florida State and then it’s the ners in Buffalo which is a you know a couple hour flight but Niners play in Buffalo so his thing was you know thanksgiving’s on a Thursday we fly out to tally on a Friday watch watch that game Saturday then take a flight up that night to Buffalo watch the ners and come back uh my uncle went to Florida so of course my Uncle David who I was named after would come down big rivalry game all that big family thing but there’s no college football I’ve seen dope Campbell stadium in Tallahassee saw that on the RV Tri trip as a matter of fact uh I’ve never been uh to Notre Dame I’ve never been to South Ben and and Kelly as a college football guy and as a sports romanticist I’ve never been there but other than probably other than probably going to austa because I want to know how it feels smells and what the environment is I’ve always thought that Notre Dame in the fall the campus and the stadium you instantly get these butter flies there’s crisp air you think of Charles Dutton and Rudy and it just feels like college football there that’s what I think like in smells like incense about it it’s know it’s U and you know that’s no well let’s let’s put put it out there as an option because your dad would be welcome too but I get I don’t know how you pack for a Saturday game in Tallahassee and a Sunday game in Buffalo I’m not sure how you pack for that but I’m sure you’d figure that out yeah just ring a change of underwear and let it work out the rest of it uh just buy on the way that’s optional um yeah the the whole subbing out the college football playoffs uh is interesting to me and that’s something I don’t recall ever hearing where they you You’ think there’d be rules against that or college football would just uh they they would have some sort of separate deal but as you said ESPN’s kind of subleasing and let’s remember too you said that the college football playoff now is expanding to 12 teams it’s becoming a whole big another thing in general that’s going to start middle to end of December and roll all the way into the the first couple weeks of January so we’re we’re about to see a season unfold in college football unlike one we’ve ever seen before absolutely and that will be unbelievable and it’ll be fun and you will have athletic directors hoping not that they’re one through four hoping that they’re five through eight because yeah because the five through eight teams get a home playoff game in December a home playoff game the one through four teams get a buy right uh and but you’re GNA have the athletic director thinking I’d rather have a home playoff game absolutely a lot better for our program it’s a ton of Revenue and as we wind down here I mean you can you look at uh I’m sure you were following yesterday the whole thing with the Republic the sack Republic and Cal Expo and Cal Expo was saying yeah we we can’t host your uh uh Lamar Hunt US Open Cup match in July because of fair preparations and then the freaked out and cbow changed their mind and Not only was it going to block Republic fans from being able to cheer their team on and home home field advantage but also that’s that’s a nice bit of coin uh for the franchise that that you know they always need every bit this isn’t like we’re dealing with the NFL it’s USL soccer um there there’s a lot of money in those home games Kelly no there there absolutely is and uh and it’s great for the fan base as well um and there’s a lot yeah there’s just so much there it’s and that’s one that’s the reason I think uh we will see the college football playoff expand again uh and they’re you know just people these teams won’t want to buy they would prefer to have a home playoff game in December uh because of everything that comes with it so uh but it it’s um It’s A Brave New World my friend we’ll we’ll see where it uh where it all goes and by the way another just a piece of sports trivia um I was watching Giants Pirates last night uh and remember that beautiful Stadium which is one of the nicest stadiums in all major league baseball that was built by a Sacramento guy that was one of the mcache family who went and bought the Pirates and and built that Stadium didn’t have a whole lot of success with the team right but he built that stadium and someday I’ll tell you a great story about the Pirates involving College roommates and everything else but we don’t have time this time we’ll get next time well speaking uh speaking of uh telling story I’m torn here between my usual self-deprecation and also wanting to promote your podcast so if you want to hear me drone on about things and Kelly brothers be professional uh it is quite entertaining it was a it was a very fun conversation we went down a lot of different roads and ended up I think on Stan ainson which is always a great place to be um when when I want to get you over to C stand as a matter of fact oh I San Diego but like an actual professional version uh and Stan was the king I think to this day no offense to many of our friends including you Kelly God bless that are anchors but I still think Stan ainson is the greatest anchor we’ve ever had on any television station in all of Sacramento at least in my lifetime no he was because he had all the affectation of King anchor but he was a real journalist too and he he did unbelievable word my I’ll leave you with this story because uh a friend of mine was his producer uh on a trip he took to uh Baghdad Iraq right before the first world uh First Gulf War and u traveled for uh you know 24 hours to get to Baghdad and they go to this hotel and Stan said you know I can’t sleep uh Le let’s get one drink at the bar let’s just go down to the bar for one drink so they went down they walk into the bar there’s three guys sitting in the bar in Baghdad Iraq in the middle of the night and Stan walks in and they all stand up and say Stan ainson what are you doing here they knew him it was three Iraqis who had gone to sack St knew yeah that is that is right honestly I didn’t see that curveball at the end that is right up there with the other whole Caitlyn Clark and her haters thing that’s their words not mine here’s what he said you women out there no petty man hey LeBron you 100% right on these girls hating on Caitlyn Clark y’all petty girls I expect men to be pett we’re the most insecure group in the world you are y’all should be thinking that girl for getting y’all ass private Charters all the money invisibility she bring into the Caitlyn Clark has brought unprecedented numbers to the WNBA her regular season games have been in the millions of viewers this is stuff that is not normal there’s no doubt she has brought a lot of eyes and a lot of interest and I and and that’s a conversation that’s being had a lot is there this pettiness should the WNBA be should why why why is there so much hate hatred in the league towards her if there is blah blah blah that I don’t want to have that conversation I got a call last night from a buddy of mine I’ve known a long time in the business he uh he’s an East Coast based broadcaster in the business and the the whole subject came up he said something to me that I thought was fascinating he said I’ve he he and I are kind of the same you know we’ve we’ve always been aware of the WNBA just hasn’t been our thing but now the league has improved Caitlyn Clark’s obviously in the mainstream it’s something it really it’s become very very interesting it’s growing and he said I I have never struggled in my career with anything like I have with WNBA coverage I said why it’s basketball he said the problem is is that there are people that have been WNBA fans forever there been some very few but some broadcasters that have covered it forever he goes I’m afraid to talk about it said’ what are you afraid to talk what do you mean you’re afraid to talk about he goes dude every time I try to have an actual opinion about the sport or what’s going on I get killed I get killed on social media and I go why because people don’t want to talk about girls basketball screw them like that that’s just immature he goes no no no no no WNBA fans everything I say I I there’s it always devolves into some sort of gender conversation you wouldn’t treat the guys like this you’re wrong about that you don’t know what you’re talking about you’re new to the sport just shut up and watch and he goes so I’m caught because I want to cover the sport more I do my I try to bring guests on that are experts so I can just kind of let them be the expert he goes but but it’s this catch22 I want to help the sport grow it’s interesting I want it to be in the mainstream I want to talk about it but as a broadcaster it’s a lava pit for me I everything I say is going to get broken down analyzed by the fans and ultimately I’m going to get screwed and and and Chris when he said that it was like bing went off in my head and I went oh my God and I said we’ll call him Paul I said Paul I think this is what women feel like covering men’s sports I I think that’s the conversation we’re having right now I think you’re going through what Doris Burke went through in a sense when she broke in and she could have legit points and be an analyst or what or name the play-by-play voice that’s a female and yes there’s some female play-by-play voices that suck just like there’s men that suck but when you are a woman walking into men’s broadcasting as an analyst or a play-by-play voice there is a large contingent of fans of that sport guys they’re like I don’t want to her voice and they use code words her voice is just kind of grading or yeah I just I just don’t I just don’t like the way she talks and it’s code for I don’t want a woman calling my games I want a man give me Joe Buck I don’t want this girl and she could bring up a tremendous Point yeah I disagree I mean who is this talking to me there’s just no credibility these are all I don’t like women in the sport conversations I said I think what you’re going through right now is what a lot of women in broadcasting have felt for years and years and years now I’m not saying it’s right on either side obviously but I think there’s a weird parallel going on where there’s a lot of guys who want to cover the sport who are genuinely trying to get interested in it the only difference is is that when the women broke in to play byplay or analyzing let’s say the NBA they were experts they had watched the game their whole lives they were just poo pooed because they’re Wom the guys you like my buddy you’re not nobody cares that you’re a guy in talking about the WNBA they care that you’re a person who’s trying to speak from an educated point of view who’s watched the game for 27 minutes and I don’t know what the answer to that is because I understood his point I too when I want to tweet about the Caitlyn Clark thing or this that I know if I lay out a take which I’m not afraid to do with anything else but if I lay out a WNBA take dude I’m getting I’m going to get killed by a certain segment of the population there people are like yeah way to go Johnny come lately way to come in and have your expert opinion on the sport that you’ve watched for 20 minutes we’ve been here 10 years here’s the deal sit down shut up watch and then maybe talk in a few years see you’re not talking about what women went through in basketball you’re talking about soccer in America like now dude honest to God you’re 100% right and I think it’s when people love this thing that not real not it’s not the entire like sports world is watching the WNBA there’s a there is a huge group of fans that absolutely love the F love the game and then as soon as Caitlyn Clark comes in and people start like oh what is this and you’re like I could I could want to just see from the what is this it’s been around for 20 years right like now because this one girl was getting she’s amazing now you’re going to come in and act like you know what you’re talking about oh you want to how things are done because you think she should get special treatment screw you you haven’t been watching all these games like I have these last years that’s 100 perc right and I think the word we’re looking for in a sense though whether it’s soccer whether it’s a WNBA I went through this a ton with mixed martial arts it’s gatekeeping it’s gatekeeping and fan bases naturally when there is an emerging sport if they’ve been there for a long time now logically speaking every WNBA fan in the world should be in love with Caitlyn Clark and anything that brings eyes and ears and coverage to the sport because it means more games will be available more money will be paid more good things will happen the leag there’s nothing bad about Caitlyn Clark and all good about Caitlyn Clark in the WNBA it’s all great for the league but I understand well if you’ve been here forever and this is your little secret and your friends and you know you’ve had to make the arguments for years and everyone’s made fun of you and all of a sudden everyone’s like Caitlyn Clark and let anything about Mike Brown I mean admittedly it had been a minute since I got a pulse but the pulse has been positive the whole time and and it just seemed like you know that Financial range that you’re hitting on um was inevitable and you know Jamal Mosley’s extension in Orlando was known to be uh kind of something that where Mike felt like you know I minimum and I forget the exact number on Jamal’s but that you know that it was in his industry where you have Market values and you have respect within that like there was a sense that that he needed to be you know around that territory Jamal’s actually a guy that that he kind of helped uh come up in the business and and so Mike is is certainly a much more accomplished coach so you know the that was an important comp and uh and it years a lot of injuries this year that really surprised me Sam I think it surprised a lot of people unless there’s something behind the scenes Dan Gilbert had made news uh yesterday there was a report that he was going to be far more involved in Personnel decisions this summer than he has uh in the recent past which is always a good thing as we talked about when owners get involved in Personnel decisions so my speculation which was all that I admitted look this is irresponsible speculation the problem is when somebody like JB gets fired with his record people are going to start thinking was this a Gilbert move was there a rift between he and Donovan Mitchell and this is a move towards them trying to resign him do you do you have any color at all on the locker room or the the what led up to JB’s being fired um I mean a little bit you know if you go back this was one of those where if you go back to early in the season um he was in pretty serious trouble right out the gate and and that part was known at the time you know we’ve reported that at our place and you know you had really the Evan Mobley injury the dar’s Garland injury early on kind of saved him where the expectations changed because that was the case um what I don’t have Clarity on right now is you know do the Cavs have any you know early sign from Donovan Mitchell about his extension and whether or not he’s willing to resign and does this you know indicate that okay he’s he’s gonna resign but he didn’t want to play for JB uh or he’s not going to resign and they’re going to retool you know we’re gonna have to wait and see but um yeah I mean JB I don’t think it’s as simple as the owner getting more heavily involved I think it was actual locker room basketball stuff that uh where the Dynamics and you know it’s I know it’s cliche and fans get tired of hearing it all the time but there was an element of of him losing the locker room at different times that I think played a part so this whole coaching car you know we just talked about Mike Brown he’ll he will almost certainly be fine you have the the Lakers and Cleveland you have a few others uh we talked about JJ reck I saw I forget where it was and I’m afraid it might be you guys because that would embarrassing for me but somebody had quoted somebody saying that the there people within the lake organization that believe uh JJ reic may have a Pat Riley type uh presence and effect on them do uh I I know generally you’ve always had a very good relationship with jeie bus and again we’re in the playoffs right now so I’m asking you a bunch of questions around the country but uh what’s Your Gut on that where that’s going to go I also have a Pat Riley leg quality because yes you do my hair is uh is combed a certain way and and I’m a white man can I say this might be and I mean usually I’m very self-deprecating and I’ll continue to be but this might be the best combined hair day you and I have ever had on the show which is your way of saying that you look great I’m I’m saying for once I’m not wearing a hat yeah and and you will will probably I’d say 30% of the time wear a hat but we’re we’re both kind of cied and and proper yeah I’m just trying to match your energy buddy I just rolled out of bed here in Minneapolis in the in the hotel room all right Pat so so what do you think um yeah I mean that reporting I do think is accurate I think even within the Lakers they’re trying they they have an interesting structure because you have Jeanie bus and Rob palinka at the top and then a fairly significant Gap to the rest of the basketball operations staff you know you got Joey bus and Jessie bus and um you know some other folks in there and and then of course you have clutch sports with Rich Paul representing LeBron James and Anthony Davis and I this coaching search to me is the first time where um there’s actually I think differing viewpoints even within clutch which is interesting because it speaks to the question of are the Lakers going to build around you know LeBron who’s 72 years old or Anthony Davis who’s going to be there long after LeBron retires um you know I think the perception is in the Intel is that JJ reck is the LeBron hire and James bgo is the Anthony Davis hire um so to your question about their infatuation with JJ you know yeah it does there’s just a lot of you know signaling um that they are very very interested in him there’s also chatter that you know I mean he’s a media guy right so like on the ESPN side it seems to be a fair amount of concern that they might lose him and they like him a lot and and then it creates an awkward process because let let’s just say for the sake of breaking it down that um they do want to hire JJ like you might have to wait till after the finals in which case you have to drag your feet with all these other candidates and so there has been some questioning about like is this a legitimate process and I think it might be um and I think bgo actually has a shot but uh yeah those are those are some of the more interesting Dynamics same am joining us from the athletic um where did I want to go with you oh you know what I wanted to ask you this before uh we got going here uh full force in the last segment I was playing Charles Barkley’s comments I don’t know if you saw them on on Caitlyn Clark and the pettiness and was talking about I was I was saying I’m repeating this for our listeners but I was talking to an East Coast broadcaster friend of mine and he was saying that he wants to talk more about WNBA he wants to talk more about Caitlyn Clark but every time he does he gets massive blowback especially on social media from existing WNBA fans and it was the first time ID heard uh somebody who who another person who had a radio show say and he had talked to many people he said felt the same way that there’s a little bit of trepidation amongst some in the media to really dive in because they are new to the sport so it’s a catch 22 where they want to talk about it they want to grow it but at the same time uh whether you consider the audience b or small for the WNBA uh there are people that will come in and say dude you’ve been here 5 minutes relax with the hot Tak shut up and sometimes it turns almost dangerous for the career when when gender becomes involved and it’s perceived that uh he he’s being uh gender discriminatory I guess would be the right word but when really it was a basketball take and I I’m curious you know look you’re an NBA guy and you’re also not a hot take guy either you’re a journalist with a capital J but I found myself thinking that’s a little bit sideways of a way that a lot of women breaking into broadcasting have felt for decades that everything they say is going to be analyzed to the core they’re going be held to a different standard uh people are going to use code terms like oh well she just has kind of a shroll voice it’s nothing to and it’s like except they’re actually experts who have studied and watched the sport uh I just thought it was an interesting combo and I’m curious from a journalistic standpoint you know how you feel about the emergence and the coverage of it yeah I mean I I don’t know exactly what direction to take that but um sorry that my long rambling question went five ways yeah I got you I just gave you the Anthony Edwards treatment that I got a couple weeks ago yeah I don’t know what you’re trying to do dog all right where you’re trying to take me D I don’t know where to go with that but I’ll tell you what a great game last night no I mean here’s my takeaway is uh is like the the casuals are coming WNBA fans and you should be happy about it know I mean like there’s going to be some uncomfortable moments within that but it’s definitely a good thing myself included you know what I mean like I have a very very limited amount of you know institutional WNBA knowledge and I’m now well aware that hey the game has gotten better and I you know I could name more players than I could a couple years ago and and it’s time for me and like a lot of folks to to start paying more attention um we are going to stub our toe every once in a while um but I kind of admittedly liked Barkley’s take because he’s not he he’s prob you know there’s a lot of nuance that he skipped over right like it’s not Kaylin Clark did not get them Charter planes that there was a yearslong push to you know to get charter planes but she absolutely got that thing over the Finish Line you know um and and you know and it needed that kind of an energy and that kind of a profile and that kind of a celebrity U to get it there but the part I probably did appreci about Barkley’s take was that it was just cutting through all of it and saying like like to WNBA players like just you know don’t look a gift horse in a mouth it’s not a gift but like you get the idea like this is what you fought for for years um you know you see like Asia Wilson I think was interviewed by The Washington Post and and you know she had a comment about how she thought it was disrespectful to give Caitlyn all the credit um for things like that and I agree and I understand that but that you know don’t lose sight of the fact that that it’s a very very good thing that the WNBA is finally moving into the mainstream um and and it’s neat for me to see that the product seems to be like you know like worthy of that elevation if that makes sense like you know the league is in a good place um you know I mean she’s 0 and4 at this point she’s struggling in in a weird way that’s I think a good sign uh for the league where it’s like go ahead give her lumps you know um so you know we’ll see where it goes I mean the NBA obviously is has got a vested interest in uh in supporting it and they’re trying to make it better too I try to apply it like and I know this is apples and oranges but it’s like I try to apply it to um I don’t know if if uh Mark Twain was reincarnated and came to the athletic and all of a sudden everyone’s views went up and you all made like triple the money would you be like hey I love you Mark Twain I just bought another house or would you be like yeah dude we’ve been grinding for years now everybody is French kissing you what’s going on or you know here at the radio station if Howard Stern or whatever came and started doing uh you know uh I don’t want to piss off anyone else let’s just say mornings and the rest of us all doubled tripled our money in the short and long term would we I I’ve tried to put myself somewhere in that position is to to understand why anyone why there’d be any pettiness or whatever you want to call it towards Caitlyn Clark and I weirdly understand the logic of both sides let her cook it’s better for the game everybody wins also we’re athletes and we’re competitive and nobody stood out of the way of Victor wanyama and let him dunk 50,000 times just so people could watch him I I I I feel like there are understandable feelings on both sides of that that particular conversation they are for sure although admittedly you lost me um in in a funny way when I you came so close to creating um sack Down Sports politics in with your breakdown right I wish you would have named an other an actual show it just started right total fire right um yeah like when Bama comes to mind for me like it’s funny um it’s not a great comp little bit apples to oranges but the Spurs um throughout the course of Victor’s first season like from a media standpoint they they they weren’t they’re never very operative or helpful in San Antonio to begin with when it comes to Media but they actually were worse than normal right and one of the things I heard was like that Victor’s teammates were tired of talking about Victor and so they were you know the as a ripple effect of that reporters were having a harder time getting time with players in certain environments because every question was about Victor wanyama that’s how some of the players felt and while I understand that it it kind of speaks to what you hit on which is like Fast Forward three years when you know three four five years when Victor is raising an NBA trophy and maybe even some of those guys that he played with are still there probably not but you get the point like like Victor being there is a good thing for the Spurs but you you might have some feelings along the way um you know and again the great part about kayin Clark and that whole reality is that guess what she’s got to be on the floor and go compete and do her thing if you’re you know if you want to make sure that people realize that the rest of the WNBA is pretty good too then go kick her ass like you have that opportunity you know Sam am joining us Sam uh you were there so I don’t know I assume you’ve seen a replay uh was that a bad call on Rudy go uh excuse me was that a bad call on Carl Anthony towns to put back in your opinion it looked like it yeah um and Mark Davis man like gez what a night he had um the the official crew chief of that game and I don’t know if that was his I think it was his call because he got on the camera to announce it afterwards but Dave I got to tell you and this is a different play but when they when they upheld the Mike Conley foul on uh was that on I forget who that was on you know which one I’m talking about no I don’t okay they challenged it was pretty close before the Carland oh yes and he didn’t have yes uh I don’t remember on he gets on the mic and he says uh you know upon further review uh Mike Conley’s uh subtle but effective nudge of of whoever and like the second that subtle but effective came out of his mouth the place just went nuts right and I tweeted like Mark nobody can hear you right now they’ve just has overtaken you and he’s just like his mouth is moving on the Jumbotron but there’s no noise coming out because the place is just irate sure and so I just think it the verb ly uh that some of these refs try to come up with to explain these different calls and and the fact that the league has put them in a position to have to become public speakers and they should all take notes from Bill Kennedy right like Kennedy’s got to be the best hold on since we got YouTube yeah uh you know that massive YouTube audience uh here’s the Bill Kennedy you you gotta lean in and and you gotta you gotta Flex the tries so the elbow elbows got to go you know we refuse the play I don’t I don’t have the tries but like that you’re totally right it’s almost like it’s almost like the guy fer record all of this and if it goes well I’ll release it if Chicago got that number one pick and the Sharks had number two you never ever ever would have seen my reaction it would have included a lot of a lot of efforts so it’s funny you say that because one of my favorite things to watch on YouTube right now these rabbit holes are people reacting the first time they heard Kendrick Lamar is not like us [Music] and I know and it’s like so super entertaining I just I don’t understand any of it I just love watching these people emote and I would make the argument Brody although I’m so glad that your sharks got the number one pick they deserve it that sounds weird because they were bad but they do deserve the pick no they they deserve the luck they deserve the consolation by the way was was that the diss track you were just talking about that was diss track on Drake not like us okay that was the big one of the diss tracks but yes uh I would argue that had Chicago gotten that number one pick it might have been as good if not even better viewing it would have sparked controversy and conspiracy theories because they just got Connor Bard last year they lead frog the Columbus Blue Jackets and Anaheim Ducks last year they were the third overall best chance to get number one sharks were fourth right behind him Chicago Leap Frog 2 last year if they did it again I think enough people would have said all right NHL you’re favoring an original six te they would have raised the flag on it I’m just glad we don’t have to go down that road and you know what the sharks can benefit from this and everything you just said is 100% true I was speaking to it would have been better viewing watching you melt down oh see all this stuff right here it would have been flipped upside down I I didn’t destroy my own home studio thanks to the NHL uh lottery draft yeah now we have a lot to talk about but I want to do the same thing to you that I I I hijacked the beginning I was recently uh on your show and I hijacked the beginning the same way I’m going to do right now there there’s a lot of people watching right now uh that uh are are interested not just in podcast but video casting uh also um you know want to do something from home and all that I know you you’re not going to go into the whole thing and I believe you have a video breaking this down but really Brody it is a beautiful setup you have it’s honestly one of my favorite setups it’s just so damn clean your voice quality is great and as a as a broadcast nerd I nerd out over this stuff this take you I would assume a long time to to to to finally get the way you wanted it yeah it wasn’t done overnight I mean I started this in 2018 I realized that I had this spot at the house that would be perfect for it um and it started small if you watch some of the original videos I ever did here um they looked completely different I think this obviously is it’s it’s been tuned up over time I’ve invested in it over time uh several layers of equipment here are are three different versions than it used to be a newer version so I’ve I’ve continued to upgrade I just think in this day and age of content creation and everybody’s got a nice Studio where they work like we do at NBC Sports but I wanted to have something similar and equally professional for when I did things on my own at home I didn’t want to lower the production value and the other thing is not a lot of people in my in my job have the experience of of being behind the camera I mean this is how I got into television lighting and cameras and audio so I was able to kind of use that that skill and those skills that I that I’ve always had I didn’t ever let go away so people don’t expect that I even did all this but I did all this because I I just think it matters and you know what I think I’m willing to help other broadcasters they’ve reached out how can I do the same thing I actually for no no other reason than I just want to help um I really tried to to do that for other people too because I do think it is important it was funny if anybody’s ever experienced meeting a friend somewhere and uh let’s say they’re driving something super cool like the Tesla p100 we were talking about earlier or a Lambo or a Ferrari or something really awesome and then you pull up and you’re comfortable in your own skin but you pull up in your uh you know let’s just say your midsize vehicle that gets good gas mileage and has four doors and gets you from point A to point B it was a little bit about it’s it’s a little how I felt going on with brod with my setup at home but how much Brody or if any did uh the whole covid experience have uh with with maybe just the The Passion of doing that but also the ability to kind of set things up because you had to work from home like a lot of us when we first realized that everything was going to be done from home that summer people said well you were like completely prepared for this you knew this was coming I’m like of course I did not know this was coming but no it was the perfect setup and I will I will say that the year 2020 completely accelerated the home studio so in in reality was I doing this well before 2020 yes but even the technology and stuff I’ve implemented here has totally Advanced just because of that year and even honestly in 21 and 22 and 23 and 24 like I said I contined to upgrade this uh to make it more versatile more capable so that here I am on your show looking and sounding as I’m as I’m trying to I know a lot of people come on your show and it’s great like you get them in the car you get them on their phone and maybe the audio is okay and you you’ll take it because you want them as a guest uh somebody said it perfectly this is like showing up in a suit and tie when You’ got your own home studio it’s the new suit and tie and so that’s that’s kind of how I take it bro Brazil NBC Sports California as I completely nerd out before we get to the meat and get out of your system I know I had to I did it on your I got to do it on mine now Brody one of the reasons I am a big fan of yours though is that I see commonalities you know you wear your heart on your sleeve um you’re you’re you’re very much passionate about your teams we’re going to talk about the A’s obviously here in a second uh but I want to ask you about the Sharks you not only cover the team but you’re you are a passionate passionate fan you don’t hide that hockey is my blind spot my father grew up on the East Coast playing hockey it kills him every single time uh we talk about hockey and and he just can’t it breaks his heart that I’m not into it of course I root for the Sharks if they’re doing something just because of the northern California Roots but I I I don’t know much other than maybe 20 hockey players I could probably name what is it about the sport that really got under your skin so I was what 10 11 12 years old when the Sharks came around and their debut caught people’s attention here in in the Bay Area and they were at the Cow Palace and what’s this NH thing and people knew but but I think it’s and I’m saying this as a television hockey broadcaster if you’re just trying to get into the game by watching it on TV you will never appreciate it you need say yeah you need to go to the game you need to see the speed and the physicality and what the camera can’t see like when the play is on one end of the ice go take a look with your peripheral vision and watch what’s happening on the bench and the next uh Trio of forwards that’s ready to hop over the the wall and and you know do a do an instant line change there are so many things about hockey that um that sport has others don’t it it is a little bit unique um it is a little bit specialized in a sense that you know if you’re familiar with football and basketball and baseball there are some things in hockey you’re like wait two halftimes no it’s two intermissions but the point is is it just it’s a unique flavor of sport it was something different for me I got hooked at that early age if it wasn’t for the Sharks uh I wouldn’t be you know a fan this is a non-traditional hockey market so that’s how I got hooked um again I think it just meshes a lot of good things together and by the way working with the players and getting to know them maybe it’s because of their their paycheck is a lot less than a lot of the other sports they’re just so down to earth the way they were raised the fact that um it took a lot of commitment by family members and friends to get them in those positions to play in youth tournaments to travel to do all that stuff so they are good down toe people and that exists in all sports but I think the volume of that in hockey is just a little bit higher Brody you know I’m a Kings guy you know I’m an NBA guy I’ve always woned and I’m curious as to what your take would be two things I’d love to see experimented with in the NBA they could steal from hockey number one uh I always wondered if actual realtime substitutions could work in the NBA I mean why not you just bring people on the guy can come on say the right in the middle of a fast break a play Sub in sub out the other one would be technical foul it’s four on five for 60 seconds I think in basketball you could do so much damage you know five on four on a basketball power play whereas in hockey you know you still have a goalie defending the scoring area in basketball it’s just some somebody’s going to be wide open I would also say about the the line change aspect I don’t see why it couldn’t work the only thing you’d have to do is take the benches from the ends like from the baselines you’d have to put them closer to uh Center Court because it wouldn’t be fair if you were on the other side you know 48 feet away whatever from from the bench that’s a long way to run and do that change so you know I also uh and Brody’s a great follow uh on Twitter as well and following you um have seen you know pictures of you your family uh in A’s gear uh just again emotions on sleeve with the whole a thing uh when you and I spoke on your show I I made it clear that I’m I’m sure I’m in the minority but and I understand you know I don’t judge people in Sacramento for being excited for the A’s to come here I I I I completely get it we talked that through on your program yeah but it just seems a little dirty to me it seems a little off I’m not a not a fan of it and part of the reason is that maybe I am mistakenly and misguidedly uh of the opinion that there is still hope in Oakland not with fiser in Oakland but with Oakland and a new owner and I and part of the reason I have that belief Brody and no one is more of an expert on this than you and your colleague Casey proud who’ve done just such wonderful coverage when the malof and we talked again about this on your program when the malof were trying to move Sacramento whether it was Virginia Beach Anaheim Las Vegas Seattle Etc um they never the team was never for sale they were not going to sell the team uh and finally after they were blocked for the fourth time I think to Seattle uh they threw their hands up now they were in a financial issue and and John fiser is not but I just get the feeling that if he’s blocked enough and and he is and everything falls through that at some point he’s going to look around and see a v rad and see a Joe lob and see from what I understand from you guys people that are waiting in the wings unknown that would step up and say I’m done with this I’m going to make a ton of money and let somebody else be a hero am I you know this better than anyone Brody am I off base there honestly I think there’s a lot of unknowns here this is the A’s starting to cross a bridge that isn’t built out to the other side yet the other side is what everybody expects to be Las Vegas yeah but this is so similar as we just watched the Arizona Coyotes go to a temporary home and we go back to hockey talk here for a second uh they thought they were going to get a new building in Arizona so they went to Mullet Arena but the new building wasn’t even approved or planned out or paid for yet and so after just two years at that temporary spot the NHL found out about Utah which I’m about to get to in just a second and Utah had just approved $900 million to upgrade Delta Center or build something new in Salt Lake City so literally seven days after that was approved bman and Bill Dy go out to Arizona and tell Alex Murillo uh we need you to sell this team to us we need you to get out of this we’ll promise you give you a team back if you can do a new building but we need to get you out of here right now because the temporary thing is not working I say all that to establish that as much as I can say this from the Bay Area and the Oakland perspective and you’re saying this from the Sacramento perspective we know there’s Las Vegas out there who are saying wait this is all lined up in promise let me throw another wrench into the engine here Salt Lake City right now state of state of Utah I should say has $900 million approved for a baseball team and a new stadium if they can get one and the same way that they just lured the coyotes to become the the Utah yetis I think is what they’re gonna be called oh wow um just that would be my guess um the same way they just lured the NHL there this is a different group there’s the Larry H Miller group separate from the Smith Group which owns the Jazz and now owns the NHL team like they’ve got the blueprint of of taking a sports team and saying we want expansion but we’ll take any team that’s ready and we can literally they have a shovel ready site at this State Fair Park in Utah so I don’t mean to like deflect from your question but I think what we all need to consider is this isn’t just sack and this isn’t just the bay and this isn’t just Vegas like Utah is still out there as well too and look this is a complicated issue even getting to Las Vegas still is a complicated issue I don’t know that all the private financials have been sorted out uh the situation with Bal and this is separate even from the ace like what they’re trying to do is just flat out difficult it’s not unprecedented but it only happens once every now what 50 years in baseball there is no blueprint for this B is in financial issues and they were supposed to be part of this Land Development and partnership and the other 26 Acres they all of a sudden don’t know what they’re going to do with it so my point is here as much as we think even we know right now what the options are I wouldn’t even be surprised if one more curveball came in this or more so that’s interesting Brody and you you know one of the things that drives me nuts is I I oftentimes will hear people say Well they’re going to Sacramento it’s not as bad as the other play is to suck it up A’s fans and I again that would be like if the the kings were moving to Fresno or the Bay Area or something I I’d be pissed off about that too but based on what you’re saying it sounds like you got Las Vegas uh you’ve got shovel Ready Salt Lake you’ve got VC and The n910 Possession law coming up in Sacramento for three years perhaps more and I don’t know where Oakland falls on that list but it sounds like it’s it it might be as low or lower than any of those three so is there a potential situation where A’s fans including yourself would say okay I have accepted that the A’s are not coming or not staying in Oakland whether that’s now or or years from now I’ve accepted this this I now realize there’s no way that’s gon to happen they’re going to go to Vegas they’re going to go to Salt Lake or they’re going to go to Sacramento would there be a point where there’d be a fan saying okay if you’re asking me to pick the the the best of all evils obviously they’re accessible in Sacramento or would you not want that because then that might make it more difficult for A’s expansion I’m just curious as to you as a Die Hard fan what you would think I would never want to speak for everybody sure of course I do think to your point there are some and and there are some listening to us right now who are in Vacaville who are in that kind of Middle Ground uh you know somewhere off 80 and they to them it’s like well it’s just the same distance either way so to that point yeah I I think there is that idea that hey they are still a drive away obviously to a very large section of fans and a cross-section of fans they’re already done with this the the true Oakland fans and so I I guess you know I would just say this about the Sacramento side of it my my perspective on it is well two things the Sacramento side I hope that that attachment doesn’t happen too quickly here because of the unknowns I just mentioned and because you know there is a small small chance they could ever end up back in Oakland but there’s a bigger chance that they end up in either Las Vegas or like I said before Salt Lake City and If This Were a three-week thing or a three-month thing you could mentally wrap your head around that as a Sacrament and say well this is temporary I get it this is temporary here’s the end date as of right now I mean technically there’s an end date but a lot of people are saying even if the Las Vegas Stadium happens 2028 is a best case scenario and the price that it would come at is a best case scenario so it could drag on even longer there’s no in date for Sacramento so in your mind how could you not think of it as a permanent thing and I’ll say Ry field I’m sorry to set her health but I’m just old school but when when you go out there you watch a game watch a couple games I can see how sacramentans are going to get hooked on hey we’ve got this this is our thing and not really understanding that it’s going away it’s like dating somebody uh maybe when you were in college and you knew that they were or in high school and you knew they were going to go to a different college but you just weren’t ready to wrap your brain around the fact that after graduation you’re both going separate ways so uh there’s that part of it I would say from the Oakland side of it there are so many people that either don’t fully understand that this is it or that they do understand that and they’re just distracted by this baseball season all of the news that came out in the offseason it hit people hard and they were following it every day now there’s baseball to kind of almost distract you from the reality of what’s about to happen at the end of September when the last game at the Coliseum is played I’ll tell you this real quick I just got back from vacation and often times I wake up in the morning and it’s like it hits me out of nowhere it’s almost like the passing of a friend you’re like I can’t believe they’re gone can’t believe this is actually happening I got back from vacation I woke up the next morning and I’m like I had that sick feeling in my stomach I had mentally detached myself from it while I was away and it just kind of hit you all over again so I don’t even know that people here in Oakland I mean don’t get me wrong they get it but I I don’t know that they have they have grasp grasped the end of this yet and you you see the things coming out about the last game of the season at the Coliseum and how prices are already getting jacked up I heard the other day I think it was a bark at the park night and the water fountains were shut off It’s just tough for me as a Sacrament Brody and I’m speaking I’m preaching to the choir here you know the novelty is going to be great that first year and Sacramento is used to supporting bad teams for a very long time obviously we’re a very loyal group but as you mentioned it it does seem to be a finite situation but on top of that I’m just not entirely sure people here are familiar enough with joh John fiser to realize exactly what’s being brought here how much of a rat he is as an owner and what type of uh way he’s going to run this team that’s stationed here it’s not like we’re getting the Yankees we’re getting a team that’s going to almost certainly unless they catch luck and lightning uh gonna be one of the worst teams if not the worst team in baseball for three years well I mean the commitment to a team and a payroll I was kind of surprised that it didn’t happen this offseason like it takes a while you don’t just instantly one one winter say all right here’s 150 million you know we’re with the league median I mean the A’s are still a100 million below the league median every single season on team payroll and while you’re watching them this year win a few more games let’s remember at what 20 and 31 is the record right now that’s a pace for about 64 wins which it’s not 50 like it was last year and it’s a little bit better than 60 than it was a couple years ago but I mean even if you want to play 500 baseball that’s still almost 20 more wins that you need and to do that it’s no offense to the Zack gofs and the Mason Millers and Shay langers those players are good they’re only getting better but you’re going to have to build in reinforcements and I don’t see with all of the financial complications and unknowns and now playing in a small ballpark this is a very diff a difficult financial situation uh for anybody to all of a sudden say you know what we’re going to Sacramento and now our payroll is going to go up you know maybe even incrementally $30 million every year like that’s a hard ask for a team that has never really done that before so I to your point um I I think that’s the money part and the payroll part beyond anything else is going to have to be at the Forefront everybody’s going to see how that goes and uh it certainly hasn’t happened that way yet and I guess we’ll see with guys like Mason Miller are they GNA stick around is this going to be a selloff that’s another thing like kings fans here I’ve explained it before imagine if uh Chris Weber and Vlade and Paia Doug and dear and sabonis were all eventually traded off for draft picks year after year after year I find myself wondering what your a are going to do at the deadline this year going into uh you know I brought up the fact that Mason Miller could be a trade candidate people are like what he’s got so much you know team control still and well you’re just getting started here but if you if you really are the A’s and you really are thinking about being good in 2028 when is Mason Miller’s value ever going to be higher than it is right now he’s obviously got a history of arm injuries and knock on wood I don’t wish that on him or anybody but my point is like if they flip somebody like him for right now it’s so that they would get three more even better players for 2027 or eight or nine or whatever that that person would be ready so don’t don’t be surprised by anything like I said though at some point if this really is their their trajectory like the baseball team is going to have to get some some reinforcements that they certainly haven’t had in recent years at all the prettiest background in the business the prettiest voice in the business one the only uh Brody
