the back of the Laural Hotel was like a little Shanty it was just we’re drinking with gangsters and locals a KN a’t Ain a well you just K through the big things can be the first to say mate try to get me sack back I’m not trying to get him sack tell them all look at me look at me right so it’s just ruthless well no one wants to run the runner out hey no one wants to send the runner out now just give me all the good information tell me on good R welcome we are in Adelaide for gather around and we are joined by uh look a man of many talents he did play some football very very good level of football and he’s also in the media now David King joins us hello David hello boys thanks for the uh the invite finally to get on and have a chat you’ve been badgering us to come on mate but we finally get on you haven’t at all now back chat powered by paywise this year kingy um we asked the same question to every guest we have on every guest has been asked this question right we know you’re a dual Premiership player right over 200 games for the kangaro football club um you you are a very good footballer understand that very good but for this moment we don’t care right we want to know your greatest sporting achievement thanks to tab touch not on the football field Dan give give give Dave a bit example five for 16 under 12’s Che Hill Cricket Club in a grand final B those figures lost the Grand Final but I got a trophy ball everything uh best thing I’ve ever done I was under nine hurdles Champion State athletics um 80 meters hurdles were barely jumpable but I did win that look I’m I’m actually not that good at anything we we’ve had we’ve had poker players we’ve had Pigeon Racing sha mcmanis Champion pigeon racer I tell I can tell you a story and Simo you’re great mate can verify this I’m I’m more of a punting Champion uh Mad Monday Eve uh I think it was 2000 or 2002 was back that stage uh got sitting with Adam Simpson Shannon Grant Matthew Burton I don’t know if you’ve had them on um got dealt a straight Lush 25 Grand wow got Delta straight Del was the most beautiful thing you’ve ever seen 9 10 Jack queen king of diamonds the dealer just lined them up in a row so they all so a straight flash is on suit and in in in order sequence yeah if it had been ace high it would have been 250 Grand that’s a is that a royal flush would be a royal flush so was one off that you on a foot trip was it was the night before it was pread Monday drinks which is a bad idea anyway right it was about 4 in the morning I’ll give full full Hy full the theory was right if you go home it get to that awkward stage if you go home at 3 you got to be back at 9: so you can you can sort of lose yourself in the one and a half hour sleep you get when you get home so often we would just punch through yes um and try and ride out through Mad Monday so they had that awkward that awkward stage where something needed to happen yes I remember I remember the dealer saying cuz they turn the cards over I knew I had a flash I didn’t know I had a straight flash right and uh the guy goes mate You’ve Won heaps and with sheer arrogance 15 be deep I said I’m M thought he said heaps 2 25 the dealer didn’t talk to me for about half an hour after that fun good fun that’s that H sporting wise I have a go with everything went to Assumption College right so you played footy during the winter and Cricket during the summer and I was no good at Cricket so I was first slip sledging all day that was my role so I got I got nothing for you what was what was life like growing up for you sporting family no no dad never played any sport at all more of a building sort of um guy could build anything could bu could don’t if he could build this studio you put together here he can he can build anything he’s pretty gifted guy so we we moved houses a lot because he’d buy them do them up we’d go get the next one buy I’m doing get the next one so we ended up on somehow on a farm just out of Kilmore um which is you know asson college area hour and a half sort of north of Melbourne um so in the middle of nowhere pretty isolated so you learn a lot of lot of skills I I can’t I’ve held on to none of those skills in terms of building or anything like that but sport was massive at school 700 um male borders during my time through there and go after that so 700 boys so that’s where footy you either play footy or you you played and you competed and every training session was like a game and it was full on were you good from that age no I no not really we we we played with guys you might know some of the names so Peter Crim’s boy Ben crims and Sam crims they went they were in Ben was in my year we had matd dundis you might remember him vaguely played for he played for Richmond and the last few years of Fitz Roy um we had I think I think there was 14 guys of the 21 or 22 in our year 12 year went to AFL clubs W so it was a massive a massive deal then and uh yeah some made it some didn’t you need a lot of luck you know what it’s like back in those days kids had come from around Australia you 130 kids getting drafted now it’s half that so you had a you had a decent draft class Adam Anthony Stevens Simo Simo was um just a just a freak competitor Simo look he just knew that he was going to first day of training first day of training with Simo into the new group and we’re sort of talking I was 22 at the stage so I was a mature age recruit oh that’s why you like the mature age dve FS love them got soft spot for the guys that have been treated rough you know yeah um so simar Kam in first day picks a fight with Anthony Rock while they’re playing basketball or something I’m s mate this day one like seriously just try and fit in man what are you doing so we just knew straight away he was going to be exactly um what Dennis Pagan was looking for and that he play a lot of footy I didn’t think he’ get to 300 games like he did but he was a ripper why why didn’t think he get to 300 well cuz not many get there for while kers have only had you know half a dozen do that but um he probably he he won’t mind me saying this he he he worked hard for everything Simo and maybe wasn’t the most polished footballer in terms of you know he he could get a ball to spin in in ways you’ve never seen a footy spin without try without try he broke a lot of fingers Sim but but for endeavor and attitude and application you know 10 out of 10 so that was we always knew it was going to be you play every week type player um but uh yeah Ripper did you think he’d did you think he’d be a coach because some guys you know in their career like always knew they were going to be a coach Simo was coaching for I reckon the last six years playing really yeah he was taking Captain then as well well he was taking control of Midfield meetings he was he was you know really challenging guys to to do X1 and did in those meetings um review as well all those sorts of things so he he wasn’t just a player he was always more than a player he always had the bigger picture in mind um he he you know I know that he was the nominal Captain but he but he was the captain without been the captain for a long time R the foot trips uh I don’t think he ever got responsibility of running the footy trips but he was always he was always uh first in the queue Lee Colbert uh would would run the foot trips in the back end and and anything that duck said through the 90s no one argued with so he ran him during that during the90s Simo used to roll out at West Coast he never missed a footage trip and he was very and and and that’s why I love Simo he was we had a lot of similarities a lot of clashes because he used to drop me all the time but you don’t like him do is the problem here no I I that that was the problem I love him and then he [ __ ] [ __ ] drop me right it’s like what are we doing here Sim cuz I think we’re quite similar and and the the connection you get around off field stuff and we’ve had some kangaroos boys on the Pod before that was really important for kangaroos culture wasn’t I know it’s changed now the game but for you guys getting together off field and having a beer here that was that was a big part of why you were successful yeah well I think this is I always talk about Wayne K you can’t do a podcast without talking about Wayne because Wayne was he was a gatherer of men like he he was the best player the best trainer the most gifted player you’ve seen but come knockoff time he was first to say hey 2:00 tomorrow bring your mate not your Mrs Laurel Hotel be 40 blcks here my mates were itching to come in those days we have phones mobile phones so if you made a commitment you were there so and no one knew where you were so it was twofold up upside everywhere right so the back of the Laural Hotel was like a little Shanty it just we’re drinking with gangsters and locals um so but that was Wayne that was Wayne he didn’t he just wanted the group to be together and those that were associated with with the players hey come and be part of the family so we had we had this rolling group of 20 to 30 that go out every weekend and we’d run into guys and say and Callingwood that they have a look at these bles there’s a dozen of them there’s 20 of them how are they doing this yeah they’d say where have you been so what do you mean where have we been been nowhere we just having a be together oh right thought you had a function or something every week you know so it was just great it was a different environment and Simo was a major part of that um when he wasn’t starting up one of his businesses I they get a lawn mowing business there at One ATM he started a computer business he didn’t even know how to turn a compend Mach vending machines he’s done it all he’s done it all any of them work none of them worked even I don’t know how belly and Simo always had something going on they were hilarious and uh yeah it’s it just sort of gives us a lot of Pride to see them do so well yeah um I’m glad that they didn’t stick with the dog wash and that they tried to run I think they tried to run the Players Association sort of it at one stage thought oh my God this is no good that’s very good we mentioned about the mature age recuit de was a 20 22 year old 22 so you were picked up as a mature age 93 was your debut you at one time so 93 debut you I don’t know who’s beaten you but you might still hold it vfl AFL record playing in preliminary finals for seven consecutive years from debut uh to 2,000 yeah that’s s that’s success well you didn’t win Seven Grand finals no but that is you can’t win them all that’s to walk into a footy club like that like you must think oh we just do this this is what this is what happens well you know what it’s like you walking into footy Club you’re 22 you sort of know little enough about footy and you’ve been watching these guys for yeah you love footy you’re watching these guys on TV and the gangers were always on on Friday nights particularly 93 um when they was the greatest scoring year of all time you know G Longmire uh Adrian mccadam kicked like 70 goals in 12 weeks or something uh in his first year like they were just a sensation of Kangas so walking in I knew you shake hands Wayne Cary says hey go introduces himself Anthony Stevens Glenn Archer Wayne SWS you know Mick Martin the list goes on of guys that were you just looked and said this this group has to win a flag at some stage and we just couldn’t get to the Grand Final that was our biggest problem we you know 94 was the Gary ablet mark the back 95 we got smacked by Carlton in a prelim um and then you get there in 96 and you finally win one you know the club hadn’t won one for 20 odd years but every year was plary Final uh at minimum three times you get through to the Grand Final and you win two and you lose one so it’s great fun but the awkward part about losing prelim week which you’ll know is mad Mondays Brown low night that has a sticky end to it more often than not so you would have had a few of few Brown low kns Yeah couple of beers you’re cheering you’re cheering on shame W Wen in the background I don’t even know shame I’m I’m coaching with shame W this year at aquinus College in so you at that one we were sitting the table next to him cheering him on like he was a teammate and the next day we’re thinking who for a while I don’t even know him right you had the tips the pro on folks are mad Monday at the brown yeah and it was so we had to it’s awkward right right so you race home at sort of 5 throw the suit on grab the partner back into the brown they know you’ve been on it all day right um so the boys would say look if your partner gets a vote you know one votes two fingers you know two votes three fingers three three votes the lot right right and like Boomer would get three two voters in a row poor Shane she’d be sitting there five minutes later she’s not with us so it’s just it was just interesting you know it was it was there always something happening at the Kang it was always a bit of a bit of a bubble in the background you know yeah what what was that um there was a core of you BLS that were at the footy club that Drew drove that success you mentioned a few as well uh John Blakey yeah Dad of the lizard uh very big fan of lizard here lizard uh you know mckm wank car Cory mckernan like you had that that Core Group do you look back now after the fact and realize that that it was just a yeah yeah and caught up with Wayne last night um good to see him great to see he’s terrific company I know he’s not everyone’s cap and I know that things didn’t finish as as everyone had hoped and wanted but um you got to understand this the enormity of these guys in their profile in the mid 90s there was there was no other coverage on any other it was like Dustin Martin on steroids yeah when Wayne was going in the 90s and that that figure that presence being so good to your mates and so good to your family like my old man have walking say get a Barry how you g my old man yeah just fall apart you know is I’m having a beer with a duck you know um so I I I love those BLS not because of not because of footy but because of because of who they are to to the people and Dennis Pagan always talks about this he said the north M footy Club it’s not about buildings it’s not about trophies it’s about the people and you just got to get the most out of everyone that walks in the door we had we had our facilities were awful you I always laugh about this you know we had the the bench press and you didn’t you didn’t count the kilos you count how far the how measure how far the flooor went down when you lifted the when you lifted the bench press the floor would give so you knew what you were pushing by how far down you went um and we had the portable set up we had nothing but we were proud of our nothing um and I think those guys you talk about you Archer Blakey um Anthony Rock Wayne schas they drove that let’s just let’s just be killers of a weekend sacrifice on a Saturday enjoy the weekend front up again train like as hard as you can but but when we’re not training we’re going to have a good time yes do you see um now you’re you’re involved more in the media and you see how clubs operate do you like get do you sort of compare what clubs are doing now to you know when you were playing and seeing why clubs are successful and why aren’t they aren’t yeah I I you guys see it as well I think you can tell when a club’s absolutely together and United and I think everyone talk about at the moment right could have fractured the whole thing could have blown up in the previous 6 to8 weeks yeah but it hasn’t and now it’s sort of flipped and going the other way that it’s them versus the world it’s a pretty powerful thing um I went spent a few days at the Giants start of the year they’re exactly the same they all live together it’s it’s them they’re just driving each other to be better all the time and and have a genuine care there’s one about having a teammate and then it’s having a mate and and I think they’re two different things some clubs I reckon they come and play footy and some come some some clubs come and live it come and you know embrace the family side of it and they’re generally the ones when you looking for that that 1% prelimary final night that they find it can’t uh can’t fake that can you and it’s always it’s literally the age of like if if every team could just have that all they would but but teams Melbourne will fall out of that Collingwood they look like they’re connected but they’ll fall out of that it’s it’s always interesting cuz I couldn’t agree with you more but it’s something that teams just driving for constantly it’s like well what’s the answer how do you get it all the time it’s it’s hard well it’s it’s very hard and it takes a few years to build so when you get a young list yeah it start again with all that stuff because it’s got to be theirs it’s got to be authentic it’s got to be real so look I think the probably the the poster boy for that Damen Harwick in a lot of ways Trent Coten they got smashed through the you know 2014 15 16 period um and then come out the other side and said stuff the footy world this is what we’re going to be embrace the fact you’re not perfect and they did those honesty sessions the Triple H sessions and and everyone just spilled their beans this is this is who I am these these are my problems in life I’m living with this this and this I need your help and they all did it and they all said well hang on if he’s prepared to tell me that sort of stuff well you know I’ll share this and all of a sudden there’s no secrets um they have a deeper understanding of whatever needs outside of footy let alone inside of the game day exper so you’re right you can’t fake it and when you got that it’s bloody powerful Dennis Dennis Pagan um spoken to a few of your former teammates everyone’s sort of got a bit of a Dennis feeling and and maybe a story um what was he to you as a coach what was he for the group and any favorite Dennis y for us oh has 100 Dennis Ys and he denies all of them um he sound like a brilliant coach yeah just to motivat he he had all these little one liners all the time that he he says that he got from his father so Dennis had a way of when you were going really well pulling you back and [ __ ] canning you back into into the group and when you were going poorly picking you up um and and making sure that the group was sort of just balanced as as it could be but in that in those periods we we’d play State footy right there’d be sort of eight of a scal and play State footy it was wasn’t one or two it was half the team play on a Tuesday night or a Wednesday night so you be South stray on a Wednesday night playing a game but you’d have to say a couple of weeks trying the extra sessions and as soon as it finish you know I remember Dennis vividly saying this to me you know you just WRA to get the opportunity got a state jumper you know you just you get that that Vindication that you’re actually that level of player for that year or that time um I remember going to train the next day and You’ be doing your stretches and the young bugs be saying oh mate how was it you know what’s he like what’s he like you know and he’s just talking about experience you know like you’d all do and Dennis had walked to the other side of the group where’s David King where is he he knows exactly where you are right you’re 30 m that way and you have to put your hand up yeah me denn he says oh there he is have a look at him you know size eight hat size 12 head you know like stuff like that the group the group would piss themselves laughing right I there was one time I uh in the 97 so you have your first Good Year you know and you get recognized you get invitations to things like like the brown low and the the Australian and those media Awards so you might get say 10 invites you don’t know what you should and shouldn’t go to yes so I remember going into Jeff Walsh yes saying Walsh he just I just don’t know what I’m doing here mate what what do I have to go to and what don’t I go to he said well go to this one leave that do this do that I’ll follow up these ones for you blah blah blah you just just don’t know right as a player anyway we lose we lose the prelim to silda and in the postmatch Dennis is going around he he reviewed everyone live after the game you know thought you this today son you that you very good today whatever you know he got to me and he said you know what he said ring them all ring them all go to Every function you like tell them how good you are tell them tell them you’ve arrived tell them you’re the reason we’re here P final week you know what go to the lot go to the lot wear the larious suit you’ve got brown L night tell them all look at me look at me right so it’s just ruthless this is after this is straight after the game straight after the game the boys would be pissing themselves in the background you walk out of the room that they just fall on the floor I forgot so so for the next 3 days the boys hey look at me look at me I’ve arrived walking on Pub here he is look at me so the intention of what Dennis is trying to do all the players deliver it yes so it just pulls everyone back down and H Ju Just hilarious just you know remember one night I give a quick story Shane Clayton one of my great I love Shane Clayton as a player just an honest hard worker run run all day had been at Fitzroy had been at Brisbane come to us a role player that you’d call him these days but we were going through a patch where Den was bringing the kids on but if they made a mistake he’s dragging them blitting them on the phone they sit on the bench for 30 minutes and all the young kids just lose confidence so then would become really hard to win games because we you know we had the best player in the comp but everyone else was sort of slightly challenged to do more anyway we Wayne said I think we need to go and see the coach and just sort out what he’s doing with the young kids and we’re going oh this is not a good idea this is not good anyway we go just come in with me guys come with me so we going D says uh denn I think what we need to do is no messages just let the kids play right if they make a mistake I don’t know just just just just wear it just just for a couple of weeks get him get him going and again he as all yeah you know what son I’ll tell you what I’ll tell you what I’m going to do I won’t send the runner out as long as they acknowledge to the box that they’ve made a mistake so think walk the think oh this can’t be good right so denn gets in front of the gr boys no Runners no Runners anymore just play right so in those days the the coaches boxes were up underneath the southern stand sort of sign so to acknowledge the box it might be you know you got to almost got to find them you know what I mean anyway first week we go three quarter time we’re five goals down Dennis can’t send the runner out all day like in feeling bubbling right wayed go crazy in the last but get have line can’t say anything next week five goals down three quarter time way to go crazy in the last get out the line Dennis gone third or fourth week right five goals down three call time get B by 10 goals well we going to this post match or no one wants to run the runner out hey no one wants to send the runner out now just give me all the good information tell me I’m good tell me I’m good don’t give me any negative stuff he goes right I got BLS waving to me all day W running down Shane Clayton running down the wing doing this all day hands in the air like one those bloody vacuum salesman oh the boys laughed we’re just been beat by 10 goals and we’re pissing ourselves in the meeting and we walk in the meeting well everyone’s in the meeting the post game CL poor cles are sitting there if crash of confidence the blow up so we leave that meeting you can imagine the next three or four days CL everyone’s just walking around doing plates you know so he had a great way of getting us to work against the problem um but it was just so funny and and just so raw and real all the time you know I’m just imagin Scotty Clayton rocking up to Mad Monday as a blow up that’s very good uh talk us about the flags mate um and maybe you know in between you know a loss as well the 98 loss that period of time to be in three grand finals in four years incredibly successful what’s it like that first Grand Final like the you’d been to the well a bit prelims that sort of stuff then you get it done what’s the feeling like when the S goes ah even probably different I re when you play when you’re an inexperienced player you’re just hoping man’s not best on ground I reckon that’s the starting point yeah that I’m nervous that what’s the other BL going to do so as soon as you sort of get through half the game and you’re like that you’re okay that he’s not doing it so that’s what you were like in 96 I reckon yeah yeah and then and then you know you’ve got the best player in the comp it’s an R for and you just got to get the ball somewhere near him really it’s was really it’s pretty simple a whole game plan was quick and direct to Wayne Right and get out of the [ __ ] way right let him do his thing so we knew we had that and we just had to we had to get a flag we just so there was always pressure on to get that flag so once once we got I think ’96 was more relief than a celebration that okay the previous three years we’d run a ground but now it’s here we’ve done it so all the a club that hadn’t had success for 20 years um gave the fans something to celebrate we we’re pretty small supporter base you know it’s it’s it’s almost like you sort of know them you feel like you know the fans uh so it was was awesome 99 I reckon 98 when you lose it do10 going in you know just should beat the crows right um and they have a couple of guys just go crazy that J jman and McLoud McLoud was unbelievable out of the middle just kept winning the ball just couldn’t stop him you know he said one of those days yes um and and we had a few down I didn’t get a kick a few of the others didn’t get a kick um and and you root you’re thinking Jesus we’ve blown that one you know and then we probably weren’t the but we were clearly the best side 98 and didn’t wi it and then 99 esam were the best side but didn’t get there so when when we got there it was it was Carlton who played the grand fall the week before yeah and that was that was probably more of a celebration [ __ ] now we got two you know um then we get leak H then the 99 we think [ __ ] we’re going to win another one here in 2000 stole him from jalong I was jalong jalong Fang there you go and you just never get back there so it’s funny how it works when you think you’re going to be good you’re you’re not um and when you’re sort of round the mark you need a little bit of luck I I I watched this because I was a fullback for most of my career and I remember this moment being a jalong fan too that was it 94 95 the the um MC Martin abet in the goal Square One hander is that 94 yeah you play that game y so given how good Mick was as a Defender right and and as a fullback you live die by the sword basically he probably won that day especially he probably won you know 20 contests and lost one and it was that one did did that affect him I know a lot of your teammates and he was a real you know lover and a great mate of everyone but like to have that moment effectively Define the game can you remember that I always think about it CU because it was like etched in jalong history right games on all the time too correct they play it all the time pisses you off did that was it was it was it one of those ones you can you were able to laugh at at all like down the line or like I just imagine fullbacks I play We like you’d never talk to DAR glass about a moment like that ever it just wouldn’t be there’s a couple of things with that so so you talk to m m say oh you who do you plan tell us who you plan on make how hard they are AR would do this all the time we have a young player come in and he just crank mck up and he ask Mick who’s his tough oon toughest opponent Mick sort of had half a Spiel you know it was like was like just play press play next 30 seconds he’s done 100 times right he go oh D very tough D he very far the block on S on your head you think you got him next thing you know he’s up on head right Lo very good kick you give him five chances he kicks five goals um and he just go he just goes through K hand he goes through a lot right um but this is a bit of a sports night one right but that’s good that’s what we he so when you when you when you lose a game like that right that was my first year um so mad Monday at Ducks pub at the red back there 8 to 10 coaches are there so you got to act really sad right 10:00 coaches leave they start turning on one another exactly your fault your fault your fault up a little bit 12:00 some of the nurses from across the road are knocked off they’re rolling in 3:00 the Traders are rolling in 4:00 the joint’s packed right and then just from the back of the bar joint’s fullon music off hey Mick hey Mick hey Mick you know yeah yeah he says um why wouldn’t you just stand on Gary ablet for one more [ __ ] minute who says this stuck we’d be playing the grandf the whole bar laughs right even know we’re pissing themselves right so every went for the wig duck did the same thing and it was like I have funny is this how crazy are these blocks you know anyway four years later we lose the 98 Grand Final we Ki seven goals 25 or something don’t know the exact scool anyway same thing M my they just lost a gra a Granda it’s a bit different eight to 10 coaches are there soon as I leave your fault your fault your fault turn their other 12:00 nurses 3:00 trades and just from the back of the bar a a KN a knock a KN well you just kicking throwing the Big Sticks he waited four years he would have thought about it every time I secretly reckon he was hoping for Dr Ms want to lose I’ve got this [ __ ] oh that is brilliant why does everyone have a MC Martin voice impersonation everyone ever spiking do does mix voice oh it’s hilarious he’s one of the great guys M he’s a seriously intelligent dude’s he’s an engineer he makes bolts for tanks or something um but yeah we just love me we we do he had the worst job mate can you imagine being full back in that period yeah one no help no help at all no pressure probably no pressure loosest Midfield you’ve ever seen right and and the highest scoring phase of footy in the world 93 a shootout right knew You’ got you’d win the shootout so you’re happy with the shootout we want we wanted the shootout you know we got the best centar for in the comp why why wouldn’t we engage but there’s a cost to that and it’s a blow can full back and the fact that he he sort of used to repeat himself Li and have a different voice was just perfect for us you know a A can you just stand here stand here stand here brilliant um uh I want to move towards the back end because we don’t have forever for you KY um you retire end of 2004 y um did you feel what what what did you feel at the end of your career did you feel fulfilled did you feel should have done more happy what was it no no I had a ball I just I just love the fun of footy like playing the game and it wasn’t a job for me really it got really serious towards the back half of the career um but when we first started it wasn’t for money it was just for an opportunity to play the big league uh see where you fit if you’re if you’re able to play or not and then once you work out yeah I’m part of the group and then you went have some success I was happy and it was never was never really a challenge of of money or anything like that so we always worked we had a full-time job through to about 99 2000 and then we’d train after hours you know 4:00 training Monday 4:00 training Tuesday and Thursday I imagine that now so we we we were really quite we were part of the public so it was a different time um and I do think we these young players coming through now miss that they become part of the general public at 30 and it’s a challenge um so yeah it for me it was great I I loved it and I probably didn’t know what I was going to do because I had a really good job at Bowen Timber um one of the sales managers there and just loved loved that job um but had to give it away to to go full-time footy when you say 29 so that was a bit of a bit of a challenge you know then you then you’re you’re out footy 32 years of age or whatever so I tried coaching I went to Richmond for three years I reckon it was oh five punish yeah it was hard work hard work and and a resource everyone’s was doing two and a half jobs instead of their own just single job um no success for whatever reason everything we DED didn’t work um and when you’re an assistant coach you don’t work any less hours when you win as as to when you when you lose tempted to stay in it and I just thought you know what this is going to be a 30-year journey to try and get an opportunity to coach I’m just not sure I got it in me so I bailed from that did a little bit of radio jumped in with 3w with Rexy and and um Gary L was there and mck Shan Mick Shan was outstanding to me at the start this is how it works this is what you got to do you got to bring something you got to say something you’re not you’re not you’re not a Lee Matthews Wayne kry Nathan Buckley um Gary L level player so you’re going to have to do more than the others so you try and find a niche at the same time things sort of lined up with champion data trying to get going in the business there was Champion D in a joint called Pros or pros and they were trying to Vibe for the AFL business and and took the champion D slant and sort of tried to Fashion that into what was real in a coaching sort of sense and I probably locked into an Nish and and have um just tried to drive that ever since it’s interesting the the transition from footy player to Media I’ve done it a little bit and I remember um your mate and my mate going into simmo’s office swords are back in the career and he said what what are you going to do yourself after I studied a little bit um I always talk about this studed did about 18 units for law degree and then thought this is stupid what am I doing this for tried lots of things from my career and I remember being in simmo’s office and I’ve just thought of this while we’re chatting and um and I said wouldn’t mind having to crack medo I’ve been doing a lot of medo and think I’m pretty good at it um and he said he laughed said like mate don’t do that I said why not he’s like mate it’s too hard he’s like there the only one block I know personally that’s been able to do it was kingy he mentioned you he said M David King’s done it he said same thing he said mate you haven’t been a Josh Kennedy you haven’t kicked Club L goals you haven’t made Australian haven’t and he said that’s fine you’ve been a great player for us but who gives a [ __ ] what will SC for does to say and I toly remember it and he was trying to give me good advice probably maybe Sil good yeah correct um but the the the media landscape as a player and it’s interesting you sort of speak about that not that you’re a role player mate you’re better than that you’re Australian Premiership winner but like not having the Wayne KY resume yeah did you so you were aware of that sort of coming out yeah yeah no I I knew that and and I knew that quickly had to find an Niche and if I couldn’t I’d probably move on and get on with life somewhere else um which didn’t worry me it didn’t phase me I just wanted to have a crack and see what this was this was all about you know um so there’s a couple of principles with it I always thought that if you’re going to talk about someone’s job at least have done the research and and the and give them their respect that you’ve watched all the games and when you say something in your mind it’s 100% what you believe don’t say it just for the the head headline or anything like that uh and make sure that you that it’s that if you come Toe to Toe with that coach right that you can say this is why I’ve said this boom boom boom so 2017 say they got to manage Nathan Buckley out he’s done right and this is why boom boom boom end of the year I go to calling with training you run into the Bucks like you got to be able to stand there and say well this is why I’ve said this right whether you’re right or wrong is irrelevant really at that stage yes it’s just an opinion yes um but you’ve called for someone’s head so you got you got to make sure you’re well enough resourced if it come if push comes to shove that you can say it to that face that you you’ve got a reason not just off the you know shooting from the hip off the cuff um so I caught up with Nixie this morning right I’ve called I’ve called adela’s Midfield vanilla right it’s a it’s a bit derogatory um and maybe there’s a tagline in there to sell your point but what you’re saying is there’s no damage in their Midfield right now they they they won’t they’ll refute that because they got to defend the player right we don’t defend the player this is why I’m saying it this is what I’m saying this is what the numbers say this is what the competition’s doing this is what the best teams in the competition’s doing and you’re here you could still be wrong but you can still have your opinion M tonight they might come out and and blow Melbourne off the park and you can look silly but right now this is the evidence have you heard anything based on evidence and stats and all of that and you just got so wrong and you and you yeah yeah yeah have you had any that you yeah heaps do you regret do you uh do I I tell you what I don’t regret it so in 2011 it’s about six weeks to go in the season and Cameron money just got the ass for Tom Hawkins at sent half at Cent half forward for forward and they were struggling hogin couldn’t get a touch so with 12 weeks ago he couldn’t get a touch I said you know what they can’t win it they can’t win it the cat right so at the time you make the call they can’t win it well when they get on a bit of a run run hawan lights up for the last six weeks and you’re go [ __ ] hell anyway they win the thing right so you’re copping it from everywhere right which is part of the gig right I understand that you’re not immune to feedback trust me so the phone rings about two weeks after the Grand Final it’s Chris Scott I’m thinking here we go I know just another little pile on right he goes Hey listen I just want to give you a ring right keep doing what you’re doing keep saying what you say he say I don’t agree with I don’t have to agree with you but if we value your opinion and we value what you’re putting down to back up what saying we look into we look into it ourselves he said we looked into what he were saying and we didn’t disagree with it at the time but we knew we could we knew we could fix that or we knew that had a chance to come good he said so keep firing the bullets you’ll miss every now and then I’m [ __ ] glad you missed this one but keep doing it so I thought well you know what that’s a good way of looking at it so that’s how that’s how I approach it um not everyone does but I watch every game and I I got all my numbers to support me and I and I before I say something thoroughly go through them so if you’re going to come back and and and engage you have to be pretty strong yourself is that how you can keep a good relationship with the club then if you sort of if you can back it up with with facts and stuff like that because obviously you know we’ve seen some instances where there’ll be clubs who just refuse to speak to a joural then like I assume that hasn’t come up in the past no well it does every they’re not jumping out you know running to Sega day yeah you know and there’s some awkward moments you know you you call for Mark Neil to get sacked 10 weeks into his coaching everyone’s going how can you say this so well this is this is why you know um and you can be wrong on that but you you take the leap of faith that what you’re actually studying and your your eye is is isn’t lying um so there’s Awkward on so I wouldn’t have signed Ken hinley again right I just wouldn’t have done it you’ve had the same voice for this period of time with the same sort of list and got the same results what is it going to change in the next 8 months I would I would have put a new voice in there and tried to get the Luke beverage effect of the dogs now that’s just my opinion right that can be wrong as well they can come out win the flag this year and Ken will be the first to say mate you tried to get me sacked last year I’m not trying to get him sacked but but but there are other ways to look at the same problem or the same issue so what was um I was Brad Scott whispering in your ear as you charged out to the three4 what are you doing out there you’re too close can you yeah I know I didn’t see him coming I know that and then he managed to put [ __ ] on me for not seeing him I don’t know how that works but um was going to kill you eyes and they’re entitled to be like that yeah was that over well I probably got a bit frustrated with how he was coaching the Kangas and and and it become it had become stale it had become tired right it had got to a point where it wasn’t going to recover right and and when coaches know they’re gone they don’t do match committees Things Fall Away they become a oneman ban in terms of selection you know if the game plan’s broken it stays broken and everyone just loses their passion for footy at the footy Club yeah and you can see it when teams play I thought it was at that stage I wrote a pretty scathing article um and called him a visitor which is which is probably on the on the nastier side of of fair yes um and he didn’t like it and and he was he was which is fair absolutely and and in hindsight it probably was it probably was overs but I’d had enough and I just thought you know nothing’s changing this but you know is he is he a North Melbourne person or is he just a visitor and that that was what I wrote because he was he was he was one second away from putting and you know what that would would have been good for TV he probably should do you are you do you go harder on North then because you know they’re close to you no I don’t go harder um I think you just you have the same view you can’t you can’t be critical of seven end clubs and and protect North yeah they’re all in the same basket um do I love them do I want them to go well absolutely but if they if they’re there to be um critiqued it’s a it’s a blank canvas right uh we’re going to move here kingy um usually this part of the podcast uh we call this schoal media scal media that I thought you might like that yeah I thought so um you you you’d be invol a lot of production meetings coming up with titles of things I thought you might like that abely social media um usually the people get to ask questions but because we’ve come here to gather around late call up um we’ve changed things for social media this is the back chat backman Diaries section right um not a lot of Defenders on Fox footy might tell you can you I know you played a bit of time there the men’s department right okay but at times you spent some time in the Midfield as well yes so would you call yourself a bman or a bman definitely a bman okay so you may be you realize you you and I you I’m a parttime there’s no one I tell you right now I’ve done the research I’ve done the numbers Ry would you classify ruie when he was in the media but he’s not he’s not he’s not on the fox footy roster the current foxy roster has no backman the Australian back there pav D no pav isn’t a b got out there as soon as he could Christin right pavit dun bran lion rewalt uhley uh Buckley Johnson not one soor on the back of that and some other things have been happen you know uh the golden fist has fallen away a little bit right okay Nick Doos got three votes last weekend which is I would say disgrace others would be lower than that but that’s where I’m at so we created uh the the Jack Buckley medal so the the back chat backman of the year last year Jack Buckley won this SL [Music] ke aw thank you so this was awarded to Jack Buckley for 2023 yeah it was coined by the Perth Mint it is the jack Buckley medal so now we have the Coleman get I just leave her in there the’s the brown the norm Smith and the Buckley okay right so the Buckley goes to Dow Defenders role players guys that get the job done right win contests not not not skirting around getting hand balls right okay so on the ba basis of that I want you to tell me your your current favorite Defender playing AFL right now and I need Defenders Nick Martin great player West Australian can’t be can’t be having 44 and being on this list I want your your your favorite current AFL I’m not going to give you the boring ones that everyone will give you they give you the of I’m going to give you I’m going to give you someone who you will you personally will love Conor Riden yes yeah we love Conor he’s in he’s in your wheelhouse a long boy mate is he a long boy I don’t know anything about him except what I say over the weekend and he is a freak doesn’t get beaten plays on them all um gets involved on the way out I think he’s he’s an unbelievable Talent they they got they got a backline up there to die for really corre giant but he’s still asked to do a lot and I think that he’ll vote heavily in your Ro look at look at that say k knows would know right Conor Iden great selection second part of this KY I want you to reflect on this statement forward sell memberships right people come to watch from kick goals mid sign sponsorships where the money’s at but backs win premierships true false feeling look not not from my I told you Mick had goals kicked on him every week H DC was winning flags at the other end I can’t subscribe to that I I can’t why not I can’t Max prip no you know that [ __ ] even when you’re saying you got to score man the game’s changed I expected nothing less from the fox Department right and you call yourself a Batman I’m a Batman but I was a loose backman that’s exactly right you’re not you’re not a real back not not to the cor no that’s very good I like it and last one um Defender diary I want I want a bman story I I want I want it can be a teammate an opposition you know um was it was it some tactics you saw from bman back in the day was it it a MC Martin story onfield I want a bman story onfield from back in your era something that stands out as I’ll give you one thank you we played a game at manica which was one of our home grounds back in we we had about five home tried everywhere we had Sydney as a home ground there for a while we had cber as a while we had Taz um we turned up to a I reckon it was a pre-season game and it would have been 40° and we played the Sydney Swans and we got out we got on the bus to go to the venue right and micke got on and he looked like he he looked like one of those o lers you that orangey look every sort of thinking [ __ ] something’s different with Mick Mick Mick all right you know anyway took a while I think it was dark said are you wearing fake T Mick mix turned up for the first time in his life game day with fake tan what play unplug a locket why what was he it’s just running down his face as he started to sweat you can see it just running down his face what was you think I reckon I reckon plug a kick 10 on Mick who just wasn’t really with us and after the game after the game Dennis went crazy and the boys just gave it to him forever he rolled out the fake T why must have been a confidence thing I don’t know lathered on himself it it just looked he looked orange he just looked he just looked off he looked M well what yeah to find some footage that’s a good question it would have been I’m G to say 96 started 96 okay might have been 95 man at man definitely man because after the games at man that little that little quadrant What’s it I don’t know what it’s called I’m trying to watch it in the Bruce lurman um trials but uh there there’s there’s a spot there’s a spot where there’s about four bars in one little section that’s where we used to go after the game every time the swans boys come back this day and they were they were they were in raptures they couldn’t believe it mix turned up that’s fake might have been the same day I know Mick stories just keep coming right but we had one of our board members Robert Smith had had a a mild heart attack in the rooms after the game so he’s as they’re putting him on the trolley to wheel him out Mick come over and said hey Smitty hey Smitty Smitty do you need your shoes do you need your shoes he’s taking the shoes off him as he as the will and out in the trolley so he can wear his shoes out that night survive yeah yeah yeah yeah Smithy survived and got his shoes back the next day only mck could do that far out hilarious mate um it brilliant some really good laughs um we could sit here and chat to you all day I know you’re a busy man as well you can’t take the Jack Buckley with you no one can take it he’s got his own no one can take it no one but as as you as you said in in media you got your stats just remember the Jack Buckley metal right the gold fist gets what’s what’s the criteria give me give me the number one so there’s votes every week oh it’s a weekly there votes every week who’s winning it now um Harris Andrews is up there a little bit um Alex Pi hang on Alex Pier Alex Pier is later oh because you’re westran you have to vote the W been best on ground for two of the three three wins they’re three and zero KY you’re a stats man they’re three and zero flag man you’re not doing that again time it’s time warie time no it’s not flag it’s warie time this time that’s what our merch say that’s what our merch says uh now KY um we are done and dusted um remember the Jack Buckley medal a big thank you to KO sports for getting us here a massive thank you to our sponsors paywise a athletic whipper snappa whiskey mum digital tab touch uh shelter Brewing Co ladal PR we have a few kingy uh backp podcast.com you can follow us on socials backchat Dore um you didn’t find any more leaders did you I thought you were Absolute brilliant chat. Absolute cracker.
That was excellent, never realised how affordable Kingy is , loved it
Hey fellas, any chance you could Time Stamp your poddies?
Hilarious well done boys
As always on the money boys
As someone who regularly saw the 90s North boys out at night at my workplace, they did a heck of a lot more than enjoy a few beers. We would regularly see them absolutely poleaxed drunk. They were hands down without comparison, the hardest partying team in the competition.
😂😂😂😂
Elite
A lot of people don't like Kingy but I rekon he is an absolute ripper – not afraid to speak his mind. Doesn't always get it right but he is one of the best in the business and great to listen to.
Great interview. Kingy a star 🌟
Best podcast by far

The Denis Pagan hat 1

Why does it take 8 weeks to put this pod on Youtube?
He’s one of my favourite footy pundits. Kingy always has an interesting take.

Last time I saw kingy we were in a body in boxers competition at the cactus 🌵 club in Essendon, we both won a case of subzero, good times, a good bloke.
i hate that fuck but great pod well done kingy
Always felt Kingy was a questionable journo, but he explained himself well here, can’t complain when you have evidence based arguments, he also seems like a ripping bloke in person, some bloody hilarious stories.
Awesome just awesome job ngy got coach the roos Roos supporter 48 yrs
Kingy easily the goat of AFL media. Actually intelligent, original, evidence based analysis other than 99% of media who regurgitate tired narratives. Also very funny as this pod shows.
Far out that was a funny listen
Outstanding pod
Thumbs up to Kings.
Great show guys
This shit is much better than the woke bullshit on the tv
Please don't go woke
