if you’re looking to strike your irons perfect I’ve got three stages that I want you to go through you might only need one but if you can do all three I guarantee you’re going to become a better iron Striker when it comes to playing golf before we get stuck into this lesson guys make sure you are a subscriber to mat fory golf totally free to do loads of free advice to help you improve your game buttons down there let’s hit it and let’s get you hitting these irons better so if we were looking at any great golfer throughout history and throughout the game now there’s some common themes that we see throughout their iron swings that help them create that perfect crisp strike every single time and just to clarify for when we’re talking about that perfect crisp clean strike what we are looking for is something where as we meet the golf ball the club will be leaning a little bit towards the target so we’ll get some shaftan the golf ball being here we will then get the ball and then the turf afterwards what we’re not looking for is sort of a scooping motion where we just whip it off the top we get the shaft leaning away from the Target and having that inconsistent contact whether it’s before the golf ball or even sort of on the top or halfway up the equator of the golf ball we’re looking for ball then Turf and if you can do these three things for me stage one stage two and stage three you’re going to start to become a really good ball Striker because it’s not actually that overly complicated I think a lot of the time we go through our golfing swing sequence and we get out on the golf course and we sort of I need to do this I need to do that I need to make sure I do this and oh I’ve got to hit it I want to hit down on it and we just over complicate it and we over confuse things but real simple what you’re going to need to do when you’re out down at the driving range I want you to create this little setup that you can see here for myself cuz these sticks are going to be quite relevant but then all I want you to do is take a teg and just pop it into your grip like so so long TEEG just pop in through a couple of inches like so and stage one if we are going to be a good striker of the golf ball we need to create the appropriate angles to be able to deliver that impact position that I’ve just talked about where we get the ball then Turf and what we’re looking for is that shaft leaning towards the target ever so slightly now what I want you to try and do and this cane here is the one that becomes most important I want us to take our setup whether it’s a a six a seven or eight iron it works with all your this but I would recommend doing it with maybe a mid iron and off a te but what I want us to try and do is just make some golf swings and I want you to check when you swing the club back when your lead arm for a right-handed golfer so your left arm when that gets level with your chest and we see it in a nice straight position I want you to have a little look where this te is pointing so I’ve put the club to the position where I was and for me we can just see now it’s actually running down somewhere near this cane what I see from a lot of my lessons and a lot of students we get a little bit sloppy we lift the club into position we can see now it’s not pointing down there it’s pointing up towards my target sometimes I get a little bit exaggerated I drag it in and get stuck and it points well inside here of this cane or I can get too exaggerated in the other Manner and I really go outside and get a bit detached and now it’s pointing somewhere over here what I want to try and do is just create a back swing in a position that allows me to hinge my wrists but also keep the club on Plain here so if you just have some rehearsals where you’re setting up to the golf ball and to caveat this hopefully there are you’ve watched other lessons on the channel about the setup with our irons we’ve got a good ball position and we’ve got everything else where it needs to be but once we’re doing this if we can just swing back and you’ll see each time that we’re getting into this position here we’re going to be getting T pointed around to this point and that then allows me to get the club up to the top and keep it on plane it’s not really across this way and that’s another sort of Telltale sign when you get up to the top where is the T pointing we would want it sitting parallel with this line that we’ve got on the ground not too out in front not too behind cuz the club is going to be pointing in all sorts of different directions and we’ve got to try and figure it out as we go through so stage one real simple just check that position for me back where is it make some rehearsals there we go just get it nice and square get it nice and square and if you’re comfortable with that you can have a few shots and this might just be the one that you’ve been lacking you might have had the club in a few different positions and all you needed to do was watch stage one get the club a little bit more on plane and you’re back on track so set up little rehearsal check where it is and then from there give it a go it’s like a laser at the flag that one nice little ball and turf strike and it’s a pretty good shot you can see where my ball was and my divot has come after where that golf ball was um placed in a moment ago stage two you might be great at keeping that club on plane in your back swing but like a lot of my lessons when I ask them well what’s your impact going to look like you pull a funny face and say impact what do you mean and I think if we don’t know what our impact is and what we’re actually trying to achieve it’s going to be very hard to create that down at the golf swing and to be fair even when I remember I was having lessons and I was a you know a lower handicap and someone said well show me what your impact position looks like sort of drew a blank and was like you know a bit of this maybe but real simple again if we’re just using our TEEG it becomes really apparent where we want to try and get this golf club back into now I think a lot of people nowadays hear about like storing the Angles and being held off with it and we get into too much of this motion where it’s really pointing out excessively away from our bodies not the case what we want to try and do our Target is to hit the golf ball but we’re also hitting the golf ball to our intended target which is the flag so I’m not trying to just hit down into that ground I want to try and collect this golf ball up and let it carry on throughout the swing this golf swing doesn’t finish here it’s going to carry on through so we need to get into a position down impact where I can get into a good follow through and simply all we’re looking for now is this cane in the middle of my feet here I’ve got my ball position just in front because I’ve got a a six iron out here and what I’m looking for what I see a lot of the time is that now that te is going to be placed just in front of where that cane is in my um in my position in my feet here but what I see from a lot of people is that as they come back down the te actually returns pretty much level with where that cane is now and in some circumstances it’s getting back behind it and what I’m going to have to do then is shift behind try and manage all the timings up to try and gather that golf ball off up off the turf and it’s not going to be very consistent what I want to try and see is that if I had that little stage one and as I’m coming down I want to feel now that I shift ever so slightly in front of the cane in between my legs and from from there then if I just came down what I want to try and feel is that if this was a longer line extending it’s just brushing past my front hip here it’s not excessively in front here and it’s not behind I just feel that even from a standing start position I can just push myself into it here so you see it now the teg just getting up towards that front hip there so have a few of those rehearsals up what’s a good impact position up and get into that position and then from there we would follow on through into that good follow through but if you can just get that t just outside that lead hip with the hips rotated your pressure feeling like it’s over your lead side here and getting that nice little shaftan that is all we’re looking to create and if we can do that again we know what we’re trying to do we’re actually going to have a good idea of actually being a bit more consistent with it so here we go just that little that that’s where I want to be and then from there I’m just going to try and feel that as I make my full swing and now we’re getting consistent a little bit more fade on that one but again a divot that is after the cane I’ve Struck it nicely and I’m finding these good iron shots and stage three this might be the one that you take to the golf course most and actually use this as your swing thought and it’s not super technical but it’s one that if we watch loads of good golfers we generally always see that they finish in balance and one thing that they do quite well everyone’s Styles is a little bit different they have a little bit flare with their follow through but if I’m just hitting a standard iron shot through my standard flight I’m not trying to hit a knockdown one I’m not trying to hit it extra high I’m not trying to shape it one way or another real simple all I would look for when I see a student who looks like they’re in control and someone who is a good striker of the golf ball is that this TEEG as we would deliver the golf club into the ball and then we follow into our follow through it now almost if we drew it through here it’s just cutting my eyes in half here it’s not out this way it’s not too much over here there’s not loads of trying to manage it as I’m going through all I’m trying to do is just get it pointing in line with my eyes as I’m going through so as I go through up and now the line would cut my eyes and I’m holding that follow through and it would match the club pretty much in line with the club and the cane that is in between my feet now I’m not over two one way or I’m not too far the other all I’m just trying to do is get somewhere into that position here and just hold that follow through because what this allows me to do is create a really balance finish and if we’ve not got good balance the chances of me delivering that club back onto the ball in a consistent manner they go straight out of the window so real simple with the tea in just have some practice swings and like I say May maybe a really good one that you take to the course just thinking right okay split my eyes and I hold it split my eyes and I hold it and it feels like a strong athletic golf swing now it doesn’t feel like something that I’m trying to manage and fudge together so stage one stage two and stage three together we’re now going to hit the best iron and most consistent iron that I’ve ever hit in I want to check it here here and I’m going to split my eyes as go through Oh it sounded beautiful nice crisp shallow divot every time every single one after the cane and those are three stages that if you do those you’re going to become a really consistent striker of the golf ball guys I hope you’ve enjoyed that lesson make sure you subscribe to the channel and we’ll see you in another one very soon e
