to 16 of them to win a Stanley Cup up to three let’s get number four tonight let’s get number four tonight how great would that be uh that voice just heard Dennis Cox he’s out here at PNC Arena with me uh Graham Hill back at the studio keeping us up and running and and you know what is like let’s just quickly set the stage here we’re outside long before the game so the the tailgating and everything is going to fill in the the plaza is going to fill up and everything’s going to happen already see it already already see it they’ve been here for about as long as we have which is an hour and a half ago when we got here um but also like like playoff runs are literally what you need to create new fans we’re we’re sitting right by the eye that the team store here at PNC Arena which is open now just saw a uh a dad and a son go into the eye come out both with a bag full of gear and it’s it’s like quite literally you feel the the playoff run creating new fans as uh as it goes on so so we’re here for the Vibes we’re here to raise the we’re here for the game but also we’re here to watch the canes shift into gear the last game of the series can set the tone for the beginning of the next series even with a little bit of a gap and the Rangers they’re already waiting so if if if if we’re looking for the next level at the start of the next series it it would really help if you close things out with a bang in front of your home state uh home fans home stadium uh capitalize on that energy and level up here’s Sebastian AO on taking their their style of play to the next level like I said I don’t I don’t really want to think too much ahead of us I mean you just you try to get to all you think about start at the next game right and and how to how to prepare for that and yeah we are aware that you know could have uh obviously we have another level we uh and we need to get to that but um yeah it’s just uh just try to try to Win Hockey games and that’s that’s the whole deal deal out of here I mean just the I don’t know tomorrow we come in and we try to do our best and that’s that’s that’s the mindset listen we all know there is another level for the Carolina Hurricanes we also know the level they’ve been playing has gotten them to a 3-1 lead in the in the the first round Series so it’s not all bad it’s it’s you know if you you squint with one eye and close the other you might see it as a positive and and say they didn’t play their a game they may have played their B minus game and they’re ahead 3-1 over a a playoff team I get that but the the game tonight is the way you turn losing game four into a positive right the game tonight is how you flip the script on him and say uh if you use it as a launching pad into the next series if if gensel scores early if if they pick up the faceoffs uh which which were at a kind of a weird low in game four if if you correct those things and launch into the next round out of game five then you might have been looking and saying well if they squeaked out an overtime kind of ugly gritty game in game four they wouldn’t have had that Launchpad they wouldn’t have had that springboard tonight can be the springboard towards the next level that’s that’s part of what tonight can be but the only way that happens is if you take advantage of the opportunities you play better you keep eyes on Matt barzel you do the things you have to do to uh to to find a way to win and by the way do it at home because the energy it’ll be unmatched again Sebastian AO this time on the motivation to clinch the series at home yeah it’s a big opportunity obviously uh want to play a good hockey game obviously we just uh we don’t think anything but winning a one hockey game right and and uh start starts with the Good Start starts with the you know uh just be come in and uh have that you know Killer Instinct Instinct and uh just uh yeah just play play our G he said my favorite phrase Sebastian AO said Killer Instinct Sebastian noo is lowkey and may like there’s actually a lot of players on the canes that are just kind of lowkey right they’re going to give you the coach speak uh especially in the locker room talking with the media or or when they’re presented publicly off the ice they have like kind of low resting heart rate right but I’m glad that they are thinking Killer Instinct within the game because that that I mean we’re we’re nitpicking right you’re up 3-1 but that was something in game four you know we we just heard Mike Maniscalco say it to uh Adam Gold not long ago if you would have just you know been in the bathroom when the the Islanders scored their goals in game four and and you weren’t looking at the scoreboard for the rest of it you would have assumed the canes won 5-1 right they they played so well but you need that Killer Instinct to to to ready for this you need the Killer Instinct to kill him right that’s why it’s called what it is you need you need that last second that that final thing to get you over the finish line and that’s the only thing that was lacking let me correct myself that’s one of the things that was lacking in game four you heard me allude to it early uh earlier another thing that was lacking faceof wins yeah last two games really it’s it’s really kind of weird uh they haven’t been atrocious at it this year but no they’re one of the best in the league but it’s one of those things that is popping up at a weird time um Sebastian AO again you hear from the best player on the canes on what they need to do differently on faceoffs personally it’s just uh sometimes it’s almost like you try too hard it gets uh you got to get in there in the circle and just be confident about it and just do you know obviously all the centers have done it you know enough times to know that you know sometimes it’s goes like that but uh obviously got to be uh got to be better and then in that department it is it is a weird thing because you know faceoffs they they can be kind of like a baseball player in a slump where you know you don’t really want to change anything so sometimes it doesn’t go your way some sometimes the the you know the puck bounces in funny ways uh but at the same time I do think it’s worth paying attention to and it’s worth you know just that extra half beat before each each face off where where you lock in and you maybe get a little bit more focused than than you’re used to doing or than you traditionally do out on the ice because uh you know so much of what the canes do is about possessing the puck being in control and and you don’t want to give away possessions uh you know especially when and we’re going to talk about this later on the show The margins of victory in the the uh post are so small they’re so Raisor thin and and Rod brendam more talks about it it it could come down to a couple possessions and you don’t know right the difference between winning 60% of your faceoffs and losing 60% of your faceoffs a couple possessions right if if that’s all it takes to change a game that’s all it takes to change a game so we’re going to be looking at this from from you know this game obviously from I would say two angles throughout the show one is right the the you you can win and lose games on the the real estate right between your your your ears shout out to Kevin Keats by the way NC State headman’s basketball coach come over here uh you uh I know this is um you know I just I want people to know that we didn’t prepare literally just walk right by that’s right I’ve got a recruit I want to say hello to you guys I appreciate you even you know spending a little time talking to me and of course I’m still pumped up from the run that we had and it was a tremendous run sure all right I got a question so we’re talking about keaki and stuff you’ve been in that pressure situation of like it’s winter go home now I know the canes are in that situation but it’s a mentality as a coach you’re in that situation like win or go home tell us a little bit like what goes into that well we won nine elimination games and what we had to do is we had to focus in on us and uh this is when you know you really need your teammates and you really have to trust one another in order to win those type of games and you know I know the kings are not going to be in that situation they’re doing a tremendous job uh but if you’re ever in that situation one of the most important things is you got to trust the man beside you and and then the the other thing we have to ask is uh college basketball the portal is in full effect I know I know the names and everything you can’t exactly mention but how do you feel your programs doing and obviously the nil support and everything is going towards the portal well it’s been a little extra work for us um we played a little longer by going to the final four you’re not going to playing right first class problem right there my private jet takes too long to refuel I I don’t get to hit the portal soon enough because I was playing in the final four and and that’s a problem that I will take every single year if we can uh but it’s going well for us I cannot say names but you know the the one thing about what the portal is be you can go out and try to find guys who fit your style and what you’re looking for and and I think we’ve been early on we’ve been able to identify some of the guys uh we’re losing great players I mean three really good singers that played and um mo mo Hamed is was a good player for us but you got both DJs you got Casey Morel that meant a lot to the program and you know you think about DJ Burns and Casey backto back uh NCAA tournaments which has really been hard because acc’s only got five teams in the last couple years and and have you have you felt maybe transfers that you reach out to and recruits reacting to you differently since this this you just brought up nine elimination games that is a run that that we haven’t seen in a long time well recruiting is so different yes the Run hurt I mean yes the Run helps um but at the end of the day it’s it’s about fit and it’s also about you know I hate to say a lot of this stuff has turned into nil and so it’s a it’s a you know you go between both that do they fit you know it’s nil play and you know we we love I’m a coach that believes in nil but I want them to be able to want to play for NC State first and then we’ll talk about the nil Su and then uh last one before we let you go I know you said you have some places to be uh saw you picked up some canes gear you got Cane’s fever I am on I’m doing the sirene tonight and I I um I do not want to walk in that place I do have I do have colors the colors are the right colors yeah the colors are the right colors but I want to you know the Kings have done a tremendous job and I do have Kane’s gear from um you know the previous year but you know me I like to stay fresh and so I can’t come in here with last year gear on that’s fair I respect that oh by the way uh when can when can I get a pair of those shoes that you have with all the ice cream cones he’s our our resident shoe sneaker head yeah and you know what I hate to tell you that that shoe is one of one I don’t know that we’re ever make2 I I’ll another final four run right that’s that’s how you get this the two of two I had a guy who walked up to me to um today in lunch and this is the heading into the eye the team store or just getting ready for the game uh Kevin Keats head coach men’s basketball NC State just was walking by jumped on the show so uh you really you never know yeah he’s gonna be ringing the sounding the siren uh to to get the crowd into it later today along with DJ Burns yeah two the siren Sounders today so it it should be a should be a fun atmosphere and there’d be a fun atmosphere uh for any postseason game but that’s just going to throw some gasoline on the fire oh you mentioned people tailgating and Grilling out I’m getting SW like just the waft smell of a grill right now and I’m like where is it coming from there there there are certain parts of tailgating that are awesome the the temptation of like if you just go walking around and everybody’s got the grills and the BRS and everything fired up uh it’s it’s pretty darn good uh speaking of the the game tonight one thing we’ve been kind of falling into uh going into each postseason game is picking our two kind of key players two players for the canes or for the opponent for the Islanders uh who the game kind of hinges on right if they do something Everything Will Change up if they if they don’t do something everything could go the other way for their team uh I’ll get it started okay this is a player who is playing well but I think can play even better okay Jake gensel that’s one of my two let’s go with and and I kind of have a simple mandate for him I want an even strength goal that’s exactly what I town I want a I want a pop one five allall five scores on the power play I won’t hate it either but I want five on five well I know he’s been like empty Nets have become a thing for him obviously the the the Kane’s power play has been uh pretty darn pretty darn good for for a while now but but I want and I’ll even get more specific I want even strength goal in the first two periods oh okay right I I want him and part of it is just I want him to be aggressive it seemed like during the regular season he was uh hunting for his own shot a bit more now that he’s in the postseason it’s it’s the thing is he’s still playing well and that’s why I prefaced it with it like he’s still coming away with points or a point at least in most games he’s still setting his teammates up he’s still making the right pass a lot of the time I just want him to be a little bit more selfish because I think he has the ability to kind of turn a game with you know a well-placed shot or you know even just just getting it into to the the net front where maybe someone else finishes it I want him to be more aggressive and force the issue so just looking at the four games of this series as a goal and three assists all three all those four points have come in the last three games the goal being an empty net or in that game two comeb back that that really seal little extra sauce on they matter believe it or not they still do matter but only five shots on goal during the during the series just five shots onal I didn’t have the stat but I could feel it yeah just five but here’s the thing I understand that the line that he is on with Sebastian AO and Andre fesov I get it you’re drawing the top defensive assignments from from the Islanders every single night and they’re going to guard you as tight as possible and those guys are gonna get their opportunity exactly but here’s the thing I want to see more of those even strength opportunities be that higher gun that you that you’re brought into to be again AO fetch gensel they’re not playing bad they’re playing good but they can be great like play to that great like and do it here today take the game to the next level if you do that the team takes it to the next level and a lot of times in closeout games I do think it’s your your best players kind of leading the way yeah just over that that last little burst to the finish line so so yeah I’m looking for that line and and more specifically gensel to be a little bit like you know it’s the good kind of selfish you know how like like in diets there’s like the bad fats and the good fats oh yeah Health F yeah you you start going like oh you know it’s all fat you’re like avocado it’s it’s the good F healthy fats these are high density lipo proteins in uh know these ldls in in in sports and and many team sports and definitely in hockey there’s like the bad selfish and the good selfish I want I want him to be the avocado of selfish okay I want him to be the good selfish and hunt for his own shots within within the offense and and not be a ball hog or a puck hog but but be selfish in his own way uh give it you piggybacked or we piggybacked off each other yeah uh who’s your your second key player uh K nuts off actually getting Nets off so you just look at like the new guys I want the people that weren’t on the team a month and a half ago to step the heck up well again it’s the reason why you’re brought in right game one he had the goal just kick things off had an assist to go as well it was nice to see him put those points up especially because he had gone 13 games to close out the regular season without any points I’m sorry with without any goals just to assist or in that stretch but if you look over the last two games just one shot on goal you look at faceoffs talk about how Dreadful the Kings have been faceoffs he’s 25% in B off over the last two games he’s won four he’s lost 12 like that’s not good and he’s only this is again including double overtime in game four he’s only played 21 and a half minutes so he’s had his ice time cut drastically he again he had the Great Moments in game one but only two shots on goal since game one that’s it no points defensively he’s not the strongest player they knew that when they got him but if if you’re not going to if you’re going to be a defensive liability you have to balance it out with constantly being a scoring threat when you’re out there on the ice and at least be 50% on faceoffs otherwise you’re not doing anybody any good because if you can’t win faceoffs means you’re stuck playing defense and if you’re not good on defense that doesn’t help either and and yes per fos is expected to be out for the the entire run here so there’s nowhere to hide like you’re like Koozie has to be dependent on because there’s there’s you know other factors at work unless you insert Lemieux into the lineup you put Kook YY back at Center which changes everything up which changes a lot of stuff uh I’ll give mine quickly here uh Andre snov all right uh specifically looking for physicality of of the the top guys he’s he’s one of the top guys that can fight back he’s he’s got a little bit more size he’s got a little bit more physicality uh brought up yesper fost out I I do feel like they’re missing kind of a little bit of the dirty work okay and I don’t want fetch necessarily doing the dirty work but I want him to to play that line between what we saw earlier uh where he was getting frustrated and picking up penalties and and frustrating the heck out of all of us but still understanding like you know part of your gift part of the reason why you were the prospect you are and you were the young player that you are is is because you’re you’re big strong tall fast and people bounce off you and you can deliver hits so uh in addition to again I’m kind of being uh very demanding of the top line here with my two key players I want them to to step up a level them specifically because it it you know you’re the top guys for a reason top guys got to play like top guys uh those are two key players for the canes for for each of us going into tonight’s game five when we come back key player from the Panthers draft Xavier liette what’s his and uh and mean the Vikings oh oh the Vikings off that yes yeah okay got I think the Patriots are just leaking all kinds of like we wanted to move here they wanted to move here we wanted to move there there they a new regime up there similar to the Panthers and maybe a little less tight lipped uh the Panthers meanwhile I don’t know if they’ve had to to like keep their their lips tight like withhold Secrets obviously want to close it out but the guys are cognizant to New York’s played some pretty good hockey I know that it’s 3-1 series but you could make a strong argument that they deserve to win game two I mean yes they didn’t have the appropriate strategy to close that one out um but don’t take that from us that game was toool right right yeah totally agree um but it seriously it could be a two two Series right now coming into tonight so yes I think there was an element of frustration specifically within the faceoff dot but you have a 3-1 series lead you’re back on home ICE tonight you know what you’re going to try and rectify or improve on and try and close out tonight you brought it up what the heck is going on with faceoffs yeah seriously guys like yper kokami I felt like he was getting chucked out of the face off thought every time he stepped in it felt kind of weird but um to my knowledge it probably will not be that same crew again tonight you’ll have to forgive me I haven’t looked it up yet but I would be shocked beyond belief if we see another 32% from the canes in the dot tonight it’s weird because it seems like especially with the kanes games I’ve seen across a lot of the Stanley Cup playoff games like a lot of guys on teams are just getting booted from Face Off seems like more than the regular season and I’m not entirely sure why like are they getting more strict with like you got to have be set in five seconds or like whatever it is like are they just being more strict I don’t know it just seems like it’s we’re seeing more guys getting kicked out of the face off dot yeah and of course as you guys know like we don’t get told any of that right like the officials aren’t made available so you just hope that behind the scenes there’s a level of transparency to whether it be the front office the head coaching staff like there’s got to be some form of messaging there um and Rod brinmore said during Sunday’s press availability that you know every time a guy was taking a face off he was coming back to the bench frustrated about something and seemingly something different so um again hopefully not a factor tonight hopefully something we don’t have to touch on again and and I said this earlier on the show earlier this week it passes like what I call the non- hockey fan test I was watching with my wife who who doesn’t know the rules and she just kept looking at me going why do the canes keep getting have to replace when they do this right even though it’s it’s something that stood out and uh then you look at the face off win l numbers and it’s it it just feels kind of like they had to be uh causing it somehow because they were so unusual um looking elsewhere out outside of faceoffs um one thing we were just talking about you know we set our two key players and both that we wanted to step up both of us had Jake gensel which feels very demanding because he’s been playing extremely well but uh what does he have to do to kind of get a non-empty net maybe even an an even strength goal in the postseason you know knowing he is that hired that’s been brought in to do just that yeah I think everyone enjoyed his hot streak going into the postseason right points and eight straight games there are a lot of people forgetting that he’s got points in three straight games here in this series but you’re right everybody’s waiting for that pop right that Big Goal um we saw it in game two with Sebastian AO in the game tangle Jordan martinook with the game winner he’s been around it but you’re right for him to reach the back of the net tonight would be huge it would go a long way that top Line’s been really good especially when you consider that it’s been really app pairing in gentel and AO the first little bit it was with Seth Jarvis now it’s with Andre fenov and the fact that they’re seamlessly working no matter who they’ve got on the right wing alongside them that’s when you talk about the underlying stuff going your way I think it’s all right behind the scenes for sure W rough team reporter for the canes joining us here outside PNC Arena ahead of game five between the canes and the Islanders kan’s obviously ahead 31 um that Top Line playing extremely well you just brought it up is it is it wrong for me to want more because because there like closeout games are when your best players kind of have to get you over that that that finish line as we’ve been talking about uh what more can they do and and how do they step up even further well what I think goes hand inhand with that is that the fact that the canes as a whole haven’t played they’ve set it themselves up to their standard in this series it’s kind of crazy to say with the 3-1 series lead but for those of us like who have watched all 82 regular season games this team really has not played the way that they played in a lot of those games and I think what a lot of people are sitting and waiting on for that I’m not going to say it’s going to be like a 5 nothing blow you out of the water type performance that everybody’s waiting on because we know we don’t see that really often this team but it’s kind of like that suffocating two nothing three nothing give you absolutely nothing a lot of what we saw in the back half of game two for a whole 60 minutes that’s what we know this team is capable of and that’s what I think a lot of people are waiting on hopefully maybe we’ll see it tonight yeah it doesn’t have to be 61 but it feels 61 sometimes when it’s when it’s 2 yeah um this goes back a couple weeks now but one of the things this is my first year covering the canes Dennis would would say you’re going to love playoff jarvey you’re going to love playoff jarvey and then turns out four games in I absolutely love playoff jarvey how is playoff jarvey different than regular season Seth Jarvis I he just takes it to a new level um he’s a bit let’s talk about the Casual hockey fans or the non- hockey fans again right you see this little 5 foot 10 he’s probably listed that maybe 170 kid skating around out there he looks young you think okay he’s he’s probably talented but then you watch him play he’s on every Jumbotron playing games and and quirky little you know what what’s your favorite artist on your Pregame playlist and he’s endearing yeah but but then the other side flips exactly and that’s a great point to touch on because he’s the same guy going hard into the corners like he’s 6’5 240 he’s taken it as he likes to call it to the hoop he’s got no fear in his game he’ll lower his shoulder whether it be on the attack with the puck or going into the corner to win a Puck battle he doesn’t play like he’s 510 180 and I think we know what that means in the sense of he will wear it there was a couple playoffs ago Dennis maybe you’ll I think it was in Boston two years ago where he blocked that shot oh yes and just sold out for it little things like that the intangibles that you don’t expect to see uh he just does so well and I think that’s what makes him even more effective this time a year it’s amazing because Rob rore trusts him on the defensive ENT for such a young player like he trusts him out there like when the PK when kan’s got to go on to penal kill it’s him install to start things on the PK which again for a guy who’s just 22 years old so we said a lot yesterday pretty remarkable for a young guy massive step forward this year especially on special teams that’s a really good point to bring up and and anytime you talk about uh Jarvis or a few other guys um you know Chatfield amongst them you start talking contracts and and one that doesn’t get talked about enough how often like throughout your day does it randomly pop in your brain that Rod bremore is on an expiring contract this postseason well within the last 24 to 48 hours and uh some of the news coming out of the Pacific Northwest probably more frequently than not but even if that that like I think we can all agree that probably doesn’t affect the situation what’s going on in the Pacific Northwest but with that just kind of bubbling it to the surface that I mean brymore is actually on an expiring contract he is he is it’s an incredibly important piece of business to tackle because think about it you put the average NHL head co I’m obviously biased I think Rod bremore is well beyond the average NHL head coach if you replace him with even just an average NHL head coach does this team has the have the amount of success it has I don’t think so I don’t think it has anywhere close to the amount of success Rod brinmore is a leader through and through we saw it when he was the captain of this team we see it now with the way he motivates his players behind the scenes it’s an incredibly important business piece of business to tackle I’m of the school of thought that he is one of those guys and he he’s made it known throughout the season he wants his people to be taken care of first so it’s entirely possible that something is done behind the scenes I don’t know that for a fact or not but that’s what a leader does right so it’s possible we’re talking about nothingness right now something that’s already been taken care of but it is at the end of the day as of right now for the public knowledge he’s on an expiring contract and that is a little worrisome and and there’s there’s when it comes to that situation everyone I talk to they kind of talk out of both sides of their mouth he loves Raleigh they love him he’s been here since has so much his hand in this and everything I’m going like that all sounds great but then why isn’t it done already right it’s it’s there’s both sides of that and and not to mention right if if anything happens there I don’t think it will but you could have a mighty upset group of players who who are really loyal to that guy yeah totally agree and look at the other side of the coin that we were just speaking on if you replace this team with an average NHL head coach well there’s probably 31 other teams out there looking at it like hey if we can get that guy imagine where our level of play goes to so um yeah I’m I’m gonna be optimistic and hope that uh something gets announced here soon but also like let’s not kid ourselves Rod bremore is he wakes up this first thought in the morning is how do we win that day how do we win that night so it may not be until this run is all said and done hopefully not going to win another six weeks from now but until then we’re probably going to be talking about it right we hear about Kane’s culture like he’s the one that set that I mean I know that slaven and stall and these other guys AO have been around for a long time but he’s the one that set that I it the canes are the only franchise if you if you count the bubble in 2020 the only franchise last five years to actually win a series in the postseason and they’re about to make it six straight years tonight so that’s the thing it’s like they’re the only franchise done it that level of consistency he’s been the top guy I mean there’s been turnover in so many coaching spots across the entire NHL and they have not had the level of consistency that Carolina has outside of maybe Tampa because of the cups that they won Under John Cooper but that’s it that’s really all I can think of it starts with that guy like that’s the guy want to keep around and and and he has to make the tough decision so we’ll we’ll lean on one of those Freddy in all four thus far uh are you surprised by that and do you think it continues yes I am surprised and yes I think it will continue um rod always cautions us to not read too far into practices but based on yesterday’s skate and the way he spoke on Sunday said listen we’ve got an off day and then a light workload the only thing different at yesterday’s practice from any other practice day in this series was that Spencer Martin the third goalie was on the ice which you can put two and two together that is to give Freddy a light workload uh so I would be very surprised if they went away from him this evening he’s been really good in all four games performance is never the question with Frederick Anderson right it’s just a matter of do you feel like you’re playing a lottery ticket when you’re sending him out there five games in a row um he hasn’t gone five in a row since round two of last year May 3rd through 11 of course he missed quite a bit of a time you never know during the regular season he could have gone five in a row if he were healthy and not in the sidelines but um I think perform forance wise it’s absolutely the right call and then uh the other kind of change up in this one forced by injury uh give tony D’Angelo a grade for for the the Run he’s been on since being forced in in for peshi oh great I was always terrible at school um it be right I mean listen we’re all well aware it could be going much worse uh we’ve seen the good of Tony D’Angelo we’ve seen the bad in toy D’Angelo um and so far s like like maybe at least me as a student right it’s like you turn you turn be it’s like could be worse exactly that that’s probably where I’m coming from there but um a lot of people who I spoke to thought he was one of the K’s better players in game four on Long Island and so that’s totally fair to say and that says a lot given that his bread and butter is the offensive side of things right and he’s not called upon to quarterback a power play right now so you just hope that his defensive end of things can hold a bet five on five and it has so you’re right credit to him Rod bmore spoke highly of him yesterday and Rod bmore is not afraid to tell you when things aren’t exactly going great so I think that speaks volumes Walt Ruff team reporter for the consistent every single night he’s another guy who goes hard in the corners he’s aggressive on the for check when you reference players who know the exact identity of this team yes peros is one of them and you just feel terrible that he’s not out there right now give us your first goal score player and period Kane’s first goal score okay so I went with Brady Shay I believe that was before game important part uh now the the onus is on Morgan and Canales right if this is happening if if David teer is actually going fine I guess I have to get out of the way a little bit now it’s on Morgan and Canalis to make it work if Morgan and Canalis burn that trust terer will never do it ever again every coach in GM to ever work for him will have to fill out like daily reports on everything that they’re doing and and minutes of every meeting are going to have to be sent to him and and he’s going to have final say on everything like if he truly is giving some leeway gosh I hope it works I hope Le get turns into the next musen Muhammad I like I I I hope I hope it all comes true I hope Jonathan Brooks is the ne next D’Angelo or or Jonathan Stewart like like Steven Davis somebody Steven Davis he says I’m in the background now it’s like but he he’s never done that like I’m in the background now it’s like huh okay it’s like maybe maybe you are starting to figure it out a little bit again since Dave Canales has taken over he’s been pretty darn adamant that the way he wants to play football is run run run have the the the everything come from running back uh have everything come from Touches for your your big guys and lean on the offensive line so that’s what I’m talking about when I say coming out of the draft it feels like uh the the kind of onus the the decision making is made by the football people rather than the owner because it goes against what we believe the owner prioritizes but goes in favor of what the coach and the GM have been telling us they want throughout the the runup of this off season and if that’s the case that’s what everybody’s been asking for right I mean they’ve been we we see the the comments on YouTube we’re about to get to our our feedback frenzy later this hour where we we read a lot of your comments we’ve seen them all right teer needs to butt out until teer gets gets his uh you know gets himself out of those conversations nothing’s to that game and and that was they did everything that they want to do uh they can be I think a little bit more what’s the word that I I’ll use the word determined to get in front of seman varlamov and and take away his eyes they can do a little bit more on that uh you know clearly starting with the puck in the face off Circle but you and I just rather esoteric discussion about what’s going on in the face off Circle at least with game four uh they could certainly be better there I I’ve liked them on special teams there’s not much that I would change on the Special Teams except uh they they’ve really gotten the opportunities you cannot complain if you’re a hurricanes fan about Power Play Chances in this series The canes have had the majority of them and uh the funny thing is the percentages are the same while the canes have double the opportunities of the Islanders uh for this postseason when it comes to playoffs uh when it comes to power plays and special teams so wouldn’t change anything there uh but it it’s honestly you’re just talking about little things Rod’s talked about it all during the season you know taking a breath here and there but you also have to remember the other team is going to take advantage of it when you get to the playoffs you know that the Islanders for all of the things that we like to talk about that the canes are are so Superior for it they have good players and when a guy like Matt barzell wakes up like he did in game number four you give him an inch he’s going to find a way to to make you pay for it so uh really it’s just those those moments where you know you get a little loose you know you get a chance to clear a puck and you don’t do it uh that that’s really been the can’s worst enemy in this series and and I mean we’re talking about you know what can the canes do better they they’re still one win away from eliminating the the Islanders in five games which is pretty darn good if you ask me yeah in in game three uh the Islanders I I think it was the first goal I I mean I thought they Carolina did everything right Tony D’Angelo won a defensive battle was had gotten the puck out of the zone and I think it was o teravan uh who just didn’t make a play on the puck and it ends up coming right back in and that cycled around and it ended up being a uh being a goal but going back to game two I thought the Islanders played nine good minutes and got three goals out of it like the last last four five minutes of this of the first period of the second period of of the first into the first four or five minutes of the second and it was three nothing and from that point be before then it was all Carolina cuz it was at one point 11 nothing in shots on goal Simon Holstrom got it the first Islanders shot on goal in game two with like 6 and a half minutes left in the first period and all of a sudden it’s three nothing and then Carolina just I mean it was like men versus uh boys the rest of the way but yeah it was it was the varsity versus the JV the rest of the way in that game uh and look it it’s that’s the weird thing about hockey Adam when when we try to explain this to folks like that nine minutes that can be the game yep uh the the amazing thing is what Carolina did for 51 as I go back to it it it should have been worse on the scoreboard that’s one of those games you look at uh that’s why I thought this series was probably going to be over in four you know now I can do the the revisionist history and Hite being 2020 game one was not the Kane’s best game they win at three to one and if you’re the Islanders you’re sitting there going we had to win that game yeah game two you go up three nothing but the canes play their best game and you’re like God we can be up three nothing and we can’t beat their best game so now it’s two games to none then the canes win you know a pretty even game three you knew the Islanders would push back this would be everything that they have but the canes win game three because they do all the little things that they need to do special teams go to the Carolina Hurricanes in that one you’re up three to nothing and then you survive the first five minute push in game number four and you get the first goal right and that’s where I’ll give the Islanders credit I thought that you know that could be the all right guys what time do our flights arrive in Cancun kind of game you know the rest the way for for New York they didn’t and you know Patrick W is not going to have them play that way and varlamov was really good you know he made he was the differen the entire NFL draft uh this coming week uh copper dropped that the Carolina Panthers will still sign veteran free agents here in the next couple months before training camp cop I’m coping a veteran free agent the I’m not going to say it’s going to be Z Jones Z Jones intrigues me though um a player with with ties to area all over the place uh and and meaning to the state of North Carolina and and he brings a unique skill set and and one thing that I really like about Z Jones is he’s been kind of the the other guy if that makes any sense okay he’s he’s operated as a wide receiver three a wide receiver four in his career and and made plays in that role uh sometimes right you get a veteran wide receiver if they’ve been like a wide receiver two or better their whole career they’re not super jacked for like hey you’re only going to be in when we have four wide receiver sets or you’re only going to be in when when one of our young guys needs needs a breather uh but Z Jones can be effective in that in that situation probably wants to extend his career I I don’t hate that move at all so I think they’re gonna sign veterans they need to fill out their roster Z Jones is an intriguing one a little banged up last year only played in Eight Games but the year before that in Jacksonville uh 16 games had 82 catches 823 yards five touchdowns pretty productive as like a third receiver uh by the way if you heard the name Z Jones before he played at East Carol played four years at ECU and put up a lot of Big Time numbers second round draft pick if I remember correctly Buffalo Bills let’s see he was the uh pick 37 overall yep actually so early second round pick um all right before we actually start taking callers do you want to give us your your goal scorer I will then I’ll give you mine said it’s time for the starting five let’s get to number five uh North Carolina meaning the Tar Heels a bit of transfer portal news uh jacobe chrisell is back in the quarterback room for the Tar Heels after a year at Arkansas yes so he was a former uh top dual threat one of the top dual handful of dual threats in the country uh went to UNCC battled with Drake May for the starting job before Drake May’s first year as a starter it’s a tall task to uh to to compete with with a guy that goes on to be the number three pick in the NFL draft he transfers to Arkansas plays sparingly hits the portal again coming back to Chapel Hill uh I thought it was this was funny Brian Murphy WL investigative reporter tweeted out or retweeted out the news and the caption he added said tell me you’re not satisfied with your quarterback situation without telling me you’re not satisfied with your quarterback situation uh just bringing in a transfer at this point in time I see why you would say that I’m not arguing with him but I do think it’s also you just want depth at the quarterback spot and it’s really hard to find depth without you know having an obvious way to playing time in the transfer portal most guys that come out of the portal are leaving somewhere because they’re not playing and they want to go somewhere where they will play and and telling somebody like that hey you know what we’re actually gonna you know we have these two guys uh you know competing to start and you’re going to be the third guy and maybe you get a chance it’s going to be tough to sell that unless it’s somebody that really enjoyed their time in Chapel Hill as a person really like the school really like the area went somewhere else it didn’t work out there and maybe they just you know grass isn’t always green or they want to come back I that might be what the the chriswell transfer back to UNCC could be about also Kade Tyson committed to UNCC on the basketball court I don’t know if this is exactly what you know the doctor ordered for UNCC I still think they need better down low presence better rebounding better defense but if you can get a 100 Cade Tyson you bring him in he is 6′ 7 in tall and for Belmont shot 46.5% from three yeah that sounds like uh yeah good pickup I I say this all the time it’s Lefty relievers in baseball it’s it’s goal Tenders in hockey it’s three-point Shooters in basketball modern basketball you can’t have too many and if you tell me he’s 67 and he provides spacing for RJ Davis I’m with it and by the way he’s a sophomore so he’ll provide spacing for whoever replaces RJ Davis as the main usage guy for UNC the the the following few years if you can keep him out of the portal that is so basically Harrison Ingram’s replacement kind of little a little bit less versatile I would say but much better three-point shooter uh so so brings a different different Beast there or or you say quarterback Ryan’s replacement yes that’s pretty more like because quarterback Ryan was like 65 was listed as okay so you bringing in a little bit taller but that’s still the outside shooting yeah exactly and and probably similar role with kdo being the guy bringing the ball up the court and and him being the spacer and I mean as UNCC fans saw when cor M Ryan was was hitting it from Deep uh you know a shooter on that kind of a a run really changes the game just look at their last game in uh Cameron indor remember that one oh yeah cor M Ryan big game that’s number five let’s get to number four we are the four the NFL draft is now coming G we look forward to it so long and and it just comes and goes um but one of the vibes okay and this is a vibe that is different than I would say the last five for the Carolina Panthers it doesn’t feel like every single pick has David tepper’s hands all over it it doesn’t feel that way it feels like David teer may have finally allowed some someone else to I don’t want to say the final say but be the driving force in most of these uh conversations uh the the example I used earlier and I think it’s a good one to illustrate this point is they took a running back in the second round David terer is very much a analytics based thinker at least that’s everything we’ve heard he comes from the finance World guy loves a spreadsheet right all the numbers uh running back in the second round is not what the numbers are going to tell you the advanced analytics gurus is are going to tell you you can impact winning more with at other positions yet they took they traded up actually after trading down to bring in Jonathan Brooks the first running back off the board I think that is a very interesting decision because to me that’s Dave canala saying I want to run the ball I want to be old school I don’t want to be uh necessarily making every decision with a binder I don’t want to be you know having the calculator tell me who to draft and Dan Morgan sided with Canalis maybe over the thinking of Morgan or sorry over the thinking of terer again that’s all inferring we’re just kind of reading the tea leaves here from the outside but if that’s the case that’s what everyone was wishing for right yeah getting David terer out of the hair of the football people and letting them make the football decisions if if that’s what they’re going for that’s what they’re going for and and I don’t think anyone’s gonna complain about that no no one’s should complain about that that’s a big complaint about him being a middling owner and yep and now the hard part is they have to make good on that trust right if Jon Jan Brooks ends up going busto and not impacting the offense and not being a premier player I have a feeling you’re going to hear David terer go I told you I’m never listening to you again or any other coaching GM I’m making the decisions give me my calculator and as as soon as you hear that it’s it’s it’s a wrap ski well I think also as well is that you hope that’s the case again this is like maybe it’s yeah maybe it’s us maybe it’s it’s wishful maybe it’s wishful thinking maybe we’re just projecting we’re looking at the clouds going that one looks like a teddy bear yeah exactly hey little continuing here on the drive with Tim Donnelly we are live outside PNC Arena uh Dennis what’s the latest when it comes to prop bets right Sports gambling’s been been mobile Sports gambling has been legal in in North Carolina for 11 days 11 days less than uh two months okay so that’s one way of putting do some math do the math I was try six weeks let’s say roughly six weeks there we go uh and and there’s G to be Kinks worked out there’s going to be uh wrinkles ironed out what’s the latest so a a lawmaker uh here in the state of North Carolina I forget which one it is is going to be uh it’s actually uh Marcia Mory uh a state representative Marcia Mor is a Democrat from Durham uh who’s a former Olympic swimmer is uh going to submit a bill by the filing deadline of this Thursday in a couple days from now to ban college player prop bets on people who may not do any sports betting or gambling what is a prop bet for example we’ll use the Carolina Hurricanes game for tonight um number of Saves by Frederick Anderson over under 20 and a half so it’s basically more or less that’s a prop bet because you’re not picking the game specifically you’re doing a individual player stats those are what’s known as prop bets so for example college basketball game uh uh these are player props player props so it could be RJ Davis uh over under 13 and a half points in a game you think he’s going to get over that or SM over if that’s the line Hammer that thing but that’s what a prop bet is they’re looking to eliminate that and I think the reason is because they want to try and make sure that we don’t have players do like we saw with javante porter porter jont porter who now formerly of the NBA because he’s been banned for life from the NBA for basically taking money betting on himself to like hit the under on his point totals basically like I’m going to make sure that I alter my stats in a game so I can win money so basically what happened with jont Porter is somebody bet $80,000 on a parlay of his player props of under so under three and a half threes under four and a half rebounds and under uh two and a half assist assist whatever the numbers were uh and and the BET was to win 1.1 million which is quite a bit of money and he played four minutes and then took himself out of the game saying he was sick had an illness and obviously all the unders hit and that is very very suspicious it opened up an investigation he’s no longer allowed in the NBA uh the idea of taking out player props is it’s it seems a bit easier and maybe a bit more morally gray to to manipulate and essentially cheat and and do a whole bunch of illegal things on individual player props rather than on team bets because right you could be jonte M jonte Porter and just say I’ll say I’m hurt and then we’re going to still go try to win the game and we still may maybe will and I’ll still make my money so uh eliminating those from college could could take some uh pressures off of kids uh to to do some nefarious things and I’ve also heard stories of uh players athletes being like bered like online or things like that because they did hit an over they didn’t get you a certain point total or number of rebounds or whatever it might be and it’s like you can eliminate you hear a lot of uh like you know in a game that’s a 40 Point blow out the benches get emptied and like some walkon who hasn’t played at all this year will grab the ball and he’ll do the uh he’ll do the The Classy thing right dribble out the clock rather than launching a three and then it’ll turn out that they were one and a half points under the the team total or whatever it is and all of a sudden that that player is getting berated in their DMS and they’re not that used to it and it’s and it’s it’s a thing so uh so that’s why the the bill is being proposed we’ll see if it passes uh that’s number three let’s get to number two earlier today we were sitting right here outside PNC Arena on the Plaza uh everything was getting set up and and the I is the team store right behind us get it the eye of the hurricane uh right behind us and and we were talking we were we were talking I think Panthers at the time whatever it was and all of a sudden a guy comes out of the corner of our eye and he waves to us and he and he looks familiar like H it was Kevin Keats the NC State head men’s basketball coach we said hey why don’t you come over and talk he was gracious enough to do so this is what it sounded like coach Keats is actually walking out of the eye where he just got himself some some Cane’s gear so so he’s all in coach uh first of all this is our first time seeing you in person congratulations on the Run guys thank you uh I know this is um you know I just I want people to know that we didn’t prepare literally just walk right by that’s right I’ve got a recruit I want to say hello to you guys I appreciate you even you know spend a little time talking to me and of course I’m still pumped up from the run that we had and was a tremendous run sure all right I got a question so we’re talking about Kane talki and stuff you’ve been in that pressure situation of like it’s win or go home now I know that Kane’s are in that situation but a mentality as a coach you’re in that situation like win or go home tell us a little bit like what goes into that well we won nine elimination games and what we had to do is we had to focus in on us and uh this is when you know you really need your teammates and you really have to trust one another in order to win those type of games and you know I know the kings are not going to be in that situation they’re do a tremendous job uh but if you’re ever in that situation one of the most important things is you got to trust the man beside you and and then the the other thing we have to ask is uh college basketball the portal is in full effect I know I know the names and everything you can’t exactly mention but how do you feel your programs doing and obviously the nil support and everything is going towards the portal well it’s been a little extra work for us um we played a little longer by going to the final four you’re not going toing right that’s that’s a first class problem right there takes too long to refuel I I don’t get to hit the portal soon enough because I was playing in the final four and and that’s a problem that I will take every single year if we can uh but it’s going well for us I cannot say names but you know the one thing about the portal is be you can go out and try to find guys who fit your style and what you’re looking for and and I think we’ve been early on we’ve been able to identify some of the guys uh we’re losing great players I mean three really good singers that played and um Mo moamed just was a good player for us but you got both DJs you got Casey Mel that meant a lot to the program and you know you think about DJ Burns and casy backto back uh NCAA tournaments which has really been hard because the acc’s only got five teams in the last couple years and and have you have you felt maybe transfers that you reach out to and recruits reacting to you differently since this this you just part of nine elimination games that is a run that that we haven’t seen in a long time well recruiting is so different yes the Run hurt I mean yes run helps um but at the end of the day it’s it’s about fit and it’s also about you know I hate to say a lot of this stuff has turned into niil and so it’s a it’s a you know you go between both that do they fit you know it’s an nil play and you know we we love I’m a coach that believes in nil but I want them to be able to want to play for NC State first and then we’ll talk about the nil Su and then uh last one before we let you go I know you said you have some places to be uh saw you picked up some can’s gear you you got Cane’s fever I on I’m doing the sirene tonight and I I um I do not want to walk in that place I do have I do have the colors the colors are the right colors yeah the colors are the right colors but I want to you know The KES have done a tremendous job and I do have K’s gear from um you know the previous year but you know me I like to stay fresh and so I can’t come in here with last year gear on that’s fair I respect that oh by the way uh when can when can I get a pair of those shoes that you have with all the ice cream cones he’s Ruff who joined the show earlier today team reporter for the canes uh Brenda Moore the head coach had shared pregame that the canes will once again go with Freddy Anderson for tonight’s game five this is my shocked voice in face not surprised one bit by this he is 121 in one with a 94.2 save percentage in 14 games regular and postseason since returning from the blood clotting issue that’s pretty darn good I will say this I think it’s the first time it’s dipped below 95% yeah I think the game that actually kind of hurt him was actually game two because he didn’t have to make a lot of saves because he only had to make one save over the last like 37 minutes of the game because Carolina was that dominant in that comeback win in game two last week which feels like forever ago um but nonetheless I think I think he only made nine saves on 12 shots that day I mean granted not like they were all like soft goals or anything like that I mean the third goal was like off of Brett peshy skate and in so you know those kinds of things happen but nonetheless that’s still a pretty darn good save percentage and he’s playing well if our big complaint is it dropped below 95% oh no I don’t think we’re uh we’re shaking in our boots over here I mean look I mean look around the playoffs I mean gosh the the wiip pick Jets have Conor hbook as their starting goenda finalist for the vzna trophy for the top goal tender in the entire league that guy can’t stop anything right now sokin got ran yeah and he’s one of the top he’s been one of the best gos got a contract that says he should be yeah it it’s just so you never know what you’re going to get come playoff time um the the interesting part is with when it comes to fredzilla and again we talked with uh Walt Ruff about this it’s never about ability it’s not really been about how he plays it’s about availability and it’s about can you play him this much and avoid the the the uhoh um the the AIS I think it’s important for Fred if you’re G to play him every game that you win tonight and get that nice big break before uh round two against the the New York Rangers who are already waiting and you know what they bring between the pipes as well so so there’s a a lot going on as far as maybe adding obviously I’m big on not saying must-win when it’s not a must-win right like it’s this is a must-win for the Islanders this is big part of that a massive part of he’s the guy that that drives the ship so yeah so it’s like I I hear Carolina loves rod rod loves Carolina he doesn’t want to be anywhere else they don’t want anyone else but it’s hard to hear that in KN then why didn’t the extension get signed last offseason right if if it’s that obvious if it makes that much sense what am I missing as to why it hasn’t already happened I know that Tom Dundon is a uniquely businesslike kind of negotiator in these situations and one of his strengths is patience Tom dunon being the owner of the canes and he doesn’t mind taking these things down to the wire no he doesn’t which I’m sure is an advantage like in the negotiating world but it it puts a little bit of stress on your fan base Tom it we’re not all as patient and as last year how is this year different than the last three or four years because the canes have essentially done everything except get to the Stanley Cup finals right yeah they’ve they they’ beaten good teams they’ve won in overtime they’ve had really cool really entertaining playoff runs but they haven’t gotten over the final hump so what’s different about this year that’s going to get him over the final hump one way to show that this year is kind of different is to do exactly what you just said when you have the opportunity in game five to close it out at home and not go back do it close it out get it done don’t go back uh earlier today we gave our our kind of key players this is where you get down into the the more the weeds of it I thought it was interesting because uh Dennis and I we we do not compare notes on these things right during our prep process we’ll say like hey let’s each come up with our two key players uh and then we’ll just do it on our own desks and and we’ll we’ll come up with our own and our own notes uh we both had gensel as our first key player yeah which I think is interesting because it’s not like he’s not getting points it’s not like he’s not impacting the game positively but both of us independently see something higher for Jake gensel uh and I think a lot of that comes with scoring goals himself I want to see the goal scorer Jake gensel this is Jake gensel Who coming into his time with Carolina in 58 career playoff games 58 points with 34 of them goals now here in 4 34 is the number I I care about most no you you were saying it right I’m just saying that is the number that I want to see yes so in in four games here yes Four Points go in points and three straight because he had a goal and assist in game number two but that goal was the empty Netter which I will say this empty Nets matter especially when it’s a one-goal game because you never know one one crazy bounce before you know what it’s tied the empty Netter does matter but he has the empty Netter and he has three assists in this series so far I want the goal scoring Jake gensel I want a five on five goal from Jake gensel because in the last game in game four both the Carolinas goals came on the power play I want to see more five on five production they they can tilt the ice in their favor really at will sometimes but they got to be able to convert five on five and that’s what Jake gensel was brought in to do to be that goal scor and that difference in games like this where you can close out a series this is where Jake gensel pots like two goals and and and I’ll put it this way part of the reason why I’m kind of using him as a as a call out is because it’s not just that the goal scoring hasn’t been there he hasn’t really been firing away no he only has five shots on goal this series that’s it like it’d be one thing if it was how hard luck right you you put a bunch of shots on goal and the the goalie makes a couple circus saves or maybe even you get a couple goals off the rebound and you force the issue then then it’s a different case the fact that he’s not getting the shots on goal is where I’m like no bro bro why why why do you think you’re here let it R man why do you think you were you were the guy that they finally decided to rent at the trade deadline it’s because in years past again what’s different this year than years past they didn’t have that sniper to go out there and get that one goal to to change things that’s Jake gel’s goal that’s what it or role that’s what it has to be uh so I thought it was interesting that we both came to that conclusion on our own and again maybe it doesn’t have to be more complicated than that yeah maybe it’s the canes need to close this out because they’re the better team and it’s their second opportunity to close it out maybe it doesn’t have to be more complicated than you brought in Jake gensel to be a goal scorer in the postseason score goals in the postseason it doesn’t always have to be very complicated uh I added Andre fnof in there who by the way uh Chris Lee W he stopped by during one of the commercial breaks we asked him for his first goal score he said he thinks it’s gonna be a big Andre fetch nikov night uh he said Andre in the first and then he just to give you the full context he locked in Andre fet nikov in the first then the full context was I don’t know if he scores the first goal but he’s goingon to do something big I I like the sound of that I don’t hate it like if it’s if he you know takes somebody off there skates and gets the crowd into it if uh you know sets up a a harlem glob troter pass to to gel AO to get get him a wide open net if ifetch does something great early I think that’s good for everybody involved um who was your other key player I hadu Nets off uh and the reason being for that was we we talked about it earlier today with Walt Ruff we’ve heard other guys talk about it about how the last two games the the faceoffs are for Carina not good and this is a team that Prides itself on winning faceoffs but also their whole their whole offensive mindset their whole offensive system is about Puck possession controlling the puck and Rob Bren Moore emphasizes so much about winning faceof because if you want to be a puck possession team you got to start with the puck um so that is something that is imperative if genus Nets off in the last couple of games just 25% from the faceoff Circle 25% and for someone who’s not great defensively he’s an he’s a talented offensive player super skilled as skilled with it with a stick and Puck as anyone on the Kane’s roster but if you are a defensive liability you can’t be starting shifts when you’re taking faceoffs playing defense like you have to balance that out with Puck possession and those kinds of things outside of game one where he had the goal and the assist he just has two shots on goal in the last three games that’s it no points just two shots on goal he has to be at least 50% in the faceoff Circle at minimum and I’m not saying this is going to change anything but it might uh I saw a report that his uh parents are in town okay and that he’s eating some homecooked his mom is making him some Russian dumplings P coov was over there so maybe maybe the literal home cooking gets him back on track uh by the way tomorrow we’re we’re we’re nearing the end of uh nearing the
