is one high pitch driver that’s for sure
nice light to it I mean it’s 11-ish
launch and the spin’s not crazy mhm but
it’s really really loud all right guys
welcome back to the channel So today
we’re going to take a little walk down
memory lane in the first of our new
series old versus new MH we’ve got uh
three different heads with us today and
the idea is we’re going to go back as
far as 10 years we’re going to go as far
back as 5 years now we’re going to look
at today’s offer we’re going to start
with tailor made drivers mhm 10 years
ago Michael 2014 SLDR was the one
apparently I don’t know I was too young
what were you using back then I was
using a n was a tit whatever it was 913
and then a 9:15 too they could have hit
it when I first met was a horrendous I
was B in SLDR cuz everyone at the club
had one I was like geez I’m missing out
so 5 years on from that uh
2019 one of my favorites Tiger Woods won
the Masters with an
M5 uh was it was a decent
head I thought at this point they they
got a bit slow on the driver heads and
I’ll be interested to see because this
one actually was a tour head shout out
to our friend cam Jacobs for dropping
this off had the CT um sticker still on
there 244 CT so not bad but a little on
the slsh side and then we’re looking at
qi1 LS love it so AE that we’re seeing
with some really good ball speed so
it’ll be interesting we’re gonna see the
the evolution of tailor maid’s uh driver
design from I mean this really changed
the game remember sort of Loft up 17 La
17 right there was exactly um so I mean
people were playing 12 degrees a LT to
try and get that thing in there yeah so
we’re going to play all at 105 uh
degrees turn to n all the heads exactly
the same Mikey love it okay let’s see
start later good luck okay for us
SLDR again I uh I didn’t really hit
these back in the day but looks good
right out of the Gates Again the uh the
story of these when released was Loft up
yeah we talked about it earlier Center
gravity so far forward to get a little
spinny so that hence the reason guys
were you know playing 10 fives or I mean
there were some guys playing 12 degree
drivers and I remember when I heard that
I was like that’s crazy Dustin Johnson’s
what was he playing like 11 and a half
degrees or something like that so um
still a great looking driver nice and
clean very deep yeah very deep really
deep in the face obviously I remember
hearing some of thei measurements on
this one and hearing that it had about
the samei as a
975d right okay so the size of the head
so we’re in this age of 10K this was the
complete opposite this was compromizing
Moi for for just sheer distance yeah so
it’ll be interesting to look at the
three drivers and I think the the two
are much more forgiven the QI 10s qi1
sorry and the the M5 are much more
forgiven than this it’ll be yeah it’ll
be interesting to see how it shakes out
were they on the right path with
something there is that something they
should bring back I hope that’s what
comes out the old versus new series is
maybe we get to revisit some
technologies maybe that we’re forgotten
yeah yeah
cool good
swing very high pitch sound really
pitchy isn’t
it interesting after you go through it
what you like the look sound and feel of
the most obviously going from you know
into now the carbon world and stuff like
that with carbon face how much how much
that plays for for what you like totally
[Music]
is one high pitch driver that’s for sure
nice FL to it I mean it’s 11-ish launch
and the spin’s not crazy MH but it’s
really really
[Music]
loud don’t want to jinx you but you’re
look swinging it nicely looks very
doesn’t look like you’re swinging very
fast and it’s it’s pretty
quick pretty good bringing back some
memories did you drive it like this back
in the day I don’t remember driving it
like this back in the day pretty pretty
consistent isn’t it I mean I don’t know
what I’ve done with the first one that
spiked the spin probably a low
strike yeah not bad not
bad pretty cool like standard devation
on spins pretty tight good I mean again
that’s why I look at that top one cuz
it’s the one that’s yeah you know if we
disable a second like it’s even better
very good I will say though on
Mi that for people to remember m is not
just about stability it’s also about
ball speed
retention that’s a good one to notice
cuz it was it was a nice looking Drive
yeah but for the the where is it
efficiency 142 we don’t see too many was
these days right that that low for you
know for me and a fitted driver so I
think it’ll be interesting with M5 and
qi1 if if that’s the big difference is
ball speed
retention little Cy not bad
yeah okay and I I think this is I know I
called you I Chang it up today jeez fell
surprised um so we’re going now this is
where or something a little bit of
technology has come into play um we have
the second kind of version of the Y
track or the track in the back M3
obviously had that um you’ve got some
Carbon on the bottom you’ve got twist
face and you’ve got obviously the ports
where they were injecting some speed
injection some speed magic so it’s it’s
great it
looks I might take take it later let’s
see I need go something to keep up with
old SDR there
though quite a good strike sound again
yeah it did so
nice funny right away with all that
carbon added how much different it
sounds yeah sounds good doesn’t it
a nice
fight not as knuckly as the SLDR
no we’re seeing we’re seeing a bit of a
change and spin
and
yeah interesting how much this one wants
to float eh just sits up there doesn’t
it and I think it’s cool that we’re
doing this obviously every driver get
the
same static Loft but Dynamic Loft looks
to be a little bit higher with this
because the CG’s back so how the Loft
presents itself to the
ball good
swing how much more I’d want to do in my
delivery to be honest your collection of
uh of strikes today is impressive
good strike yeah yeah High maybe just a
a tad higher in those last
few much right on
it all right braz there we are we’re
home now you knocked me with that no one
didn’t hit the M5 so good any who back
into qi1 LS the
gamer like a nice one yeah little
flatter
yeah and of sits right in between that
launch and spin between SLDR being the
kind of the knuckly one and M5 being the
spinny one that’s pretty good isn’t it
yeah
better strike I mean I I don’t know what
to honestly I don’t know what to tell
you about the speed like that’s 116 it
feels exactly the same so I know
like obviously speed has got up relative
to Club head speed yeah that was a hair
thin
but it it did feel honestly feels the
same
effort that’s a nice
flight flatter
draw the nice flight ever seen a goer
dreaded straight Ball come
on you ever seen a goal for who can go
as hot as cold I didn’t say you got
cold your ball position a bit changed
for five swings I’ll show you cold ice
cold Baltic as our friend would
say that one felt good good
swing crunched
up SDR back on one more
time but that again that’s back to 113
yeah maybe that’s just what is qi’s
definitely got a couple miles an hour
out of it
extra it’s just it’s just gone a good
strike
wants to go to the
left really good couldn’t hit that any
better to be honest back to what we
talked about with the Bryson video I
mean that has no business been that far
offline No 2 mm tall not even a degree
close to face the path go to the Target
face the target point two like
that’s capital punishment yeah and it’s
not like it’s a knuckler or anything
like that either it’s 2,300 RPMs a spin
so crazy H so I think this is where the
evolution moving into twist face was so
apparent that if they were going to push
the boundaries with the CG they really
had to offset that with some different
bulge and roll um yeah sort of
relationships one more this we’ll go
back to
M5 like I have to work at this one yeah
you look like you’re trying to sling
that so far right to let it kind of stay
online and I think that’s with the I
think that’s why there’s a speed
difference cuz with Qi 10 I feel like
I’m you know releasing it you know I can
I can with this Al don’t I feel like I’m
just having to like steer it so
much as good as I can hit this one that
is textbook right
there it just doesn’t want to it doesn’t
want to entertain that green this your
year for good
driving I
that’s a good strike right there still
fairly low
efficiency Dynamic L was good strike was
was good for high launch lower spin just
doesn’t want to spin
low I’m trying to hit that so high in
the head trying to bring that spin
down good as I can
do okay young Guru young Guru yeah the
uh that SLDR is really low spin I said
earlier when I uh went to go lay it down
on the on the table the thing just sits
up so fast because of that CG so far
forward that’s exactly where the weight
bias just pulls it in that direction
which makes sense for the Loft up I mean
there were some that I mean that
obviously is the lowest spin of the
bunch
um but when like you hit a couple there
that you said that were almost you know
perfect you’re like you couldn’t hit it
any better and how far not how far but
how draw bias this driver wants to be
how much left it wants to go yeah um but
when you moved into stuff with a little
bit of twist face on it it really it
really protected the the mess or even
the good strike it just just stayed
online more definitely so with the 10
five turned to nine which is way more of
it right now mins nine turn to either
depends 75 or eight depending how I can
feel about the face I mean it’s
significantly different in terms of the
static Loft if we uh move into M5 you
can see just how much Str M5 got and you
know kicking the spin up a little bit
ball speed about the same but yeah you
do you took a hit on the the carry
because of that um but I really lik the
flight on M5 yeah me too thought it was
thought it was nice and then you move
into Qi 10 I mean that to me is is
staggering MH I’ve said this a few times
Mikey and I really truly believe it that
stealth and stealth 2 were very much a
work in progress from a speed
perspective I think there was some Kinks
work out you know Carbon M ER in stealth
forgiveness in stealth to and then it
was like they bake the speed back into
it yeah um so you kind of had the The
Best of Both Worlds I mean for for the
launch and spin to be where they are at
166 ball I mean it obviously ideally I’m
going to get that spined down a little
bit and and work in my launch conditions
but if I do that I’m only get going to
gain more speed I’m going up to probably
168 ball um if I bring the dynamic cloth
down a little bit you can see kind of
it’s cool to do this this cuz you can
see evolution of like what did they do
right in Sr what did they do right in M5
and then what have they put together in
Q10 totally I mean you like you said you
bring that spin down a little bit on qi1
and you can’t argue with that speed it’s
it’s tough to beat yeah I mean there
there’s the strike I think you know the
discrepancy and one being high launch
lower spin one being little bit lower
launch higher spin is is kind of found
right here yeah um you know I felt I
just I can’t honestly I was trying to
explain it but it’s hard to explain how
much more comfortable I felt with Qi
10 it just because it just felt
like it was it wasn’t a real premium on
the strike it didn’t have to strike it
as good withdr I felt like I was walking
in a tight RPP every mess was just so
penalized um so obviously similar but so
much straighter with q i 10 and then the
M5 was good just a little sh and the
same kind of dispersion looked somewhat
similar just you know 12 12 or so yards
short didn’t didn’t have the speed so I
I think that’s what we want to see from
these companies as they evolve they they
take things okay we like that but that
we’re leave that behind and we we
definitely said SDR would have benefited
from from twist face yeah some of those
tall ones I hadit that missed way left
to see if I can pick that one out the
week can I’ve talked about but it was
your second last one was perfect that
was that one that
missed five into out and
S yeah that’s it so like I’m not going
to deliver it better than that I’m not
going to strike it better than that and
if that is the Miss 35 yards left 35
yards left I don’t want it no no thanks
good like I said good in certain aspects
but with the help of twist face and
obviously the way things have evolved
that Qi 10’s pretty good it’s it’s right
back where tail made would like it to be
and to be honest I mean I’m not even
thinking about t I’m thinking is in the
fitting you know Arena it is back as a
genuine Contender on on speed I mean
across the board there it’s really good
sort of launch standard deviation um I
mean that I aspire to be honest from my
swing perspective I aspire to move from
9 into 105 right okay I would love to uh
if I can kind of be those launch
conditions with with that speed
somewhere close to that speed um I would
play 10 five not
nine cool because I always feel like I
drive it better more Loft so you know
guys I think as we go through 10 years
ago five years ago and
today you you can see it you and
probably a bunch of you have lived it
and experienced it five M5 is a great
driver SLDR was so long today’s driver
is is is all of the above I agree very
cool okay plenty more companies we’re
going to take a deep dive into 10 years
5 years today we are going to look at I
think I believe it is uh ping next um
we’re going to look at the evolution of
a ping Ping’s always I think always been
known for their forgiveness but what
they’ve have got today is they’ve got
distance and forgiveness both uh yeah
yeah so dive into that next time hope
you enjoy the little walk down memory
lane we certainly enjoy reliving our
fitting days uh with both of those but
glad we’re in today’s product not the
old product sure all right stay tuned
for more and we’ll see you again soon

Gotta do this with the Mizuno drivers
244 vs 257 CT in real life less than. 2 yards on the golf course. SLDR 430 was the first driver that I was like this is it… They finally made a driver for me specifically. I hit that sldr until m5 but I cracked my sldr and then two months later the crown exploded off my m5 then that pretty became the norm. Cracking at least a driver a year and most of the time getting into a third head. It's a real pain in the ass. I'm spoiled having access to spec heads but I'm just sick of having to buy them two at a time since they are put together with shitty glue and double sided tape now 🤦♂️. I'm back in my old favorite epic speed 3ds LS Rambo special. I snagged three new old stock heads all 58.3 lie 7.8 loft and the face is 0.8 open just how I love it in the flat Callaway hosel! Tournament season starts in 60 days! Let's go lads!
Curious as to why you all chose those specific drivers to compare…
The M2 is arguably one of the greatest drivers ever made and the M1 arguably the most popular.
The louder the better ! Golf is the only sport where people like quiet ! 😅😅😅
Same Smash with SLDR and Q. I can understand Ian being more comfortable and thus swinging faster. But ball speed is direct result of SS. I dont think I saw club data on M5. If SS is slopwer like SLDR and spin like Q i can see why its a bit further behind.
I love loud a** drivers
Correct me if i'm wrong but the tour head starts with a thicker face because they hit so many balls and they wear it thin. With that in mind, the M5 should be slower off the get go right?
I still use my sldr s 16 loft driver. Yes 16 degree driver. Straight high bombs.
Hmmmm…very interesting results I must say
SLDR is a goat tier driver for high speed players it was just so fragile… I went through 7 heads in 3 years
Love it. Can't wait for Mizuno and Titleist woods 🙂
Was there a major difference in the lie between SLDR and Qi10? Ian was much more toe up with SLDR.
What are the shaft lengths of the shafts – bet SLDR is shorter by an inch
SIM Max 2 beat the QI 10K Max by 7 yards
Can u please do it the same test with 3w
I love how this just shows how a 10 year old driver can be just as good as a brand new driver. I have an SLDR driver that I use as a practice driver and though the sound is a little louder, it still performs really well
Makes me wonder how unforgiving my SLDR 430 tour was 😂😂.
Been playing an M5 since it come out. Great driver, the face recently cracked on it last month, little disappointing to give up. Think I’m between a Mizuno and Taylormade
So your goal is to show that hundreds of dollars later, the "old" gear is just as long as the new gear?
😉
would’ve been nice to see M2 in this mix. i played it in 2022 & 23 and it was awesome until TSR2 then 3 came along and they both outperformed it. the 3 in my bag for the foreseeable future, at least 4-5 more years
I still have my sldr as backup driver, easily one of the most unforgiving drivers ever made. I cannot underestimate how hard this is to hit lol.
Quick fact: Sean Tulon owns the patent for the SLDR along with 100+ other TM patents. It's why the SLDR and the Callaway Maverick had the same head shape. Can you hot melt an old head to help with the sound to get it more muted? If so get the Nike SQ driver in there too! lol
Love this evolution testing concept lads, brilliant work! Had it on a string The Glasgow Ranger 💣🔥
It's hard to compare, u pick the ones u want and delete others
Thanks for the video. Don't really see difference at all regarding ball speed. 1.43 vs 1.44 efficiency considering the low impact point with Qi10 compared to SLDR
When I watch videos like this I think the big improvement in golf clubs is within the marketing departments 😂
Looking forward to more of these
Loved the user name that Fraz used ⚽
lol I’ve had all of those and I’m currently in the qi10 😂
I loved my SLDR, from the numbers it looks like ball speed doesn't mean longer distance. In 10 years and all this talk of moi, we've lost yardage
I remember when Taylormade came out to a huge demo night at the Golfsmith HQ. I worked with a lot of the OEM reps by working at the Golfsmith HQ and it was really cool to just walk around and talk tech with them. The Taylormade truck was out and there was a big monitor up that had a leaderboard of people who were hitting it long. SLDR was a big story and of course, everyone was to "loft up." The competitor at Callaway was the Big Bertha Alpha – it had the core that could be flipped to have the CG low or high in the head. These were two of the lowest spinning heads I think I have ever witnessed. We've come a long way.
I still play a TM M5 Tour. I had the standard M5 and it was similar to this video; nice, stable and a bit short. The M5 Tour is a different beast for me; a very neutral head with low spin in a slightly more compact profile. I also have a SLDR 430 TP which is fun to use, albeit marginally slower and same spin window as the M5 Tour (for me)
I still play the sldr driver ,3wood and the 5 wood they are staying in my bag
This made me miss my M5 with Gamma Hulk shaft. Loved that head, looked awesome and sounded great. Thanks for another great comp video y'all!
back all the way to the R11 or R1!
Love this 👏
Please do PING next
Hilarious this comes up. I was just talking to a buddy about the m5 and how much I loved it
That’s crazy the SLDR is longer, lower spinning, etc. Thanks
Sldr 430 was a nice driver
Where’s the SLDR 430? That would be more even against the Qi10 LS
Great video guys! I have a SLDR. I hope you can answer this question. When I got fitted for it, I think the shaft was the wrong stiffness. I had an instructor hit it and he said even for him it was stiff for his liking. As I bought the SLDR in 2014, he said that shaft manufacturers don’t make shafts for the SLDR. Is that true or was he just setting me up to buy a new club? Thank you!
Ian, As your fitter, I would absolutely NEVER put you in that M5 driver, and because the SLDR punishes slight misses dramatically (plus it sounds awful), I'm eliminating that driver. You are in the correct driver among those three with your Qi10 model!
I bought the SLDR last year, it was the hardcore 430cc model in 9 degrees, I was injured at the time so could not get much out of it but might have to try it again after seeing this.
Still using my R9 and had a 313 yard drive calculated by my shot scope yesterday, averaging 265 due to my high handicap lol
Love these comps! Well done
