Why are there so many crashes in pro cycling at the moment?

With Vingegaard, Evenepoel and Van Aert all having serious crashes, resulting in multiple broken bones in recent weeks, we’ll be looking at the possible reasons why.

Plus, we ask how there are now more cyclists than motorists in the city of Paris, as Dan & Si cover all the latest cycling news from this past week, and much more!

  1. Do you agree that it’s the racing that makes pro cycling dangerous, not the riding? 🤔Do you feel there have been more crashes this year? What can be done to reduce them? Let us know your opinions in the comments! 👇

  2. Most are young compared to years gone by, pro or not you dont have the experience. They also use the front brake too much.

  3. Slowing down the peloton? Really? The discussion based on “safety” in the professional peloton racing will always be pointless otherwise it won’t be called RACING! 🤦🏽‍♂️

  4. MVDP has only done less "road" racing this year than any previous Paris Roubaix winner but he has done a fair amount of CX racing and defended his world championship.

  5. You say riders are faster riding on the hoods. You say the bars are narrower now giving less control (cyclo cross comparison). You have a law permitting riders to just attach the little finger to the hood of the brake whilst racing. Why not ride flats with minimum width and brake space standards. Result same speeds apparently achievable and more streering control, providing law requires rider to ride in some fashion, that has him with ready access to brake control and not swapping up and down drop bars.

  6. With regards to crashes, I wonder if clothing could be made better, the current ultra thin speed suits, offer very little protection even from a minor crash and no modesty protection afterwards. Also most of the recent crashes appear to have been caused by a gust of cross wind, so focusing of making bikes less susceptible to this could help (deep rim wheels?)

  7. Grateful that the mics are no more. I was confused and actually had to check whether this is an older episode.

  8. 12:50 I think some insight to this question could be attained by asking current riders how they feel about the supertuck ban.

  9. Wondering which race the caption competition photo is from? It says Dwars Door Vlaanderen on his lanyard badge!

  10. Watching the Roubaix men's race I thought he people with their little triangular flags did a very poor job of warning the riders of upcoming hazards, one person standing only couple meters in front of the hazard with his flag chest high. No way this was a good enough warning. Of course there was a bad crash there.

  11. Widen tires and/or bars. Maybe require suspension. Any of those would decrease speeds and improve bike control.

  12. Riders are being pushed to their limits.ore than ever before. Risks won't reduce because the community demands more. It's a tough cookie to crack.

  13. Faster? Also maybe they're going faster because there's a new AI created drug that's undetectable in current tests? No one likes to talk about it but it is kind of the elephant in the room.

  14. Just to say a big thank you to all GCN. The GCN show is one those weekly gems I always look forward to.

  15. This year's falls have also been the subject of many times in the Estonian media. One possible solution was proposed by Jaan Kirsipuu to give up radio communication. Because now the team manager tells the radio when to be in position and the mindless search for position begins. It is possible that if the competitor himself had to read the progress of the competition, he would not act so thoughtlessly.

  16. I'd like to point out that many F1 drivers historically have been against changes that involved sacrificing speed for safety, but ultimately that hasn't been a good enough reason not to make the sport safer. And we've seen incidents where, for example, the halo has probably saved lives and there were drivers who expressed extreme dislike of the idea before its introduction who have since recognised its efficacy. I wonder what, for example, Gino Mäder's family would say on the subject.

It's not a good idea to rely on riders to take more responsibility for their own safety since riders are coming into the World Tour at an age when their brains are not yet fully developed which means their ability to assess risk is also underdeveloped. The brain is generally not fully developed until around 25yo.

And, by the way, increased speed doesn't only give less reaction time but also obviously increases the force of any impact, which is bound to also increase the risk of more severe injuries.

  17. CRASH STATS going up at the closing stages of races may be an indication of the pressure that racers feel to better position themselves for the win in an ever more packed and competitive field, risking it all for glory at the finish line. No wonder some of the elites try to break sometimes 50 to 80 K out from the finish to avoid the melee and the dangerous finish line crazies 🙂

  18. ONE thing the UCI could do is implement better (SAFER!) crowd control. Some racers are heading into PACKED un-corded /uncontrolled crowds at full speed. This is a SERIOUS accident waiting to happen both for the rider AND cycling fans.

  19. Vingegaard, Roglic and Evenepoel are talented bike handlers, so I don’t think lack of skill or experience can explain that crash

  20. UCI should make it safer by having less numbers or riders in a team. 7 or 8 plus a sub and injury rider per team for the UCI season. That way we know who we are following and teams and riders need to peak for less races, less 80km out attacking.

  21. Grabby disc brakes?!?

Disc brakes’ modulation can vary if the rotors are cold or hot. IMO that variance and the ability to apply a lot of braking force with very little effort can make misjudgment a distinct possibility, especially when fatigue is present.

  22. I would be interested to see the rate of crashes in the cleaner years versus the rate of crashes in the late 90's and early 2000's. I think the athletes could concentrate better later into the race versus now when they obviously fatigue far earlier. Love 'em or hate 'em but maybe PED's made the racing safer… food for thought…

  23. Accelerometers could be added to racers' bikes. When a crash is detected, a warning could be broadcast over the riders' radios.

  24. Am I the only one who is distracted from the two "googly eyes" rings from the tattooed guy in the caption competition foto?
    Plus: great caption Mr. Lloyd

  25. 20 years ago – IF you happen to pick up a 2 week old copy of l'equipe in the cafe you look back and read ' X, Y and Z were involved in crash 50km into stage 4'.

Nowadays – Crash happens – multiple on board camera angles. Reels on instagram. Live streaming results updated. Facebook status of pro rider updated from back of ambo. GPX data on Strava. Cycling media live news stream updated instantly…. Youtube wrap up on the evening features multiple angles and analysis.

Its not hard to see why people are asking ' are more crashes happening now?'

  26. MTBs are 10% slower 😅

Could lack of oxygen in the blood be leading to more accidents? Perhaps athletes are arriving more depleted towards the end of the race?!

  27. Narrow handlebars, hard disc braking, and cafeine nervousness.

Ban cafeine supplements, make frame weight and handlebar width relative to the riders' body, and go back to rim brakes so there is more built-in caution in the peloton.

  28. Higher speed causes more damages. So, maybe the number of accidents could be the same, but the effects will be worse
