Please tell me he didn't say he'd rather have a rookie QB staring over Herbert??
Finch are overpriced they are out to gouge you
I'm down with Dec's view of this. Idiotic lunge for show content by Mack.
As we get closer and closer to the draft, I am seeing a lot more people getting cold feet when it comes to trading up. And they should be.
A lot of people are starting to realize just how much you have to give up in order to move up. It can ruin your team and it can hurt you for years.
First off you have to go into this looking at it from the other team's position. Why would they want to trade with you. What's in it for them. Just because you want to move into their spot doesn't mean they want to move down to your spot.
You have to give up a lot more than some appear to think will be enough in order to make a trade. Some think trading 2 1st round picks will be enough. Now they're reading the top 5 teams know some teams are anxious about moving up. Those teams at the top are going to hold the feet of the teams who want to trade up to them over hot coals to get a ransom of a deal just to move down.
New England is absolutely teasing teams to come to them with a package of picks so they would be willing to move out of the #3 overall spot. Washington and Arizona are no different.
Just when people thought the Vikings purposely went out and traded to get Houston's 1st round pick (#23 overall) so they could use as potential collateral to move up and draft a QB in the top 5. That might still happen from the Vikings position. It has been reported that it wasn't the Vikings who initiated this deal. It was Houston. They wanted to make this deal. They see the players in this draft and believe as most that players ranked 20-45 on the big board are basically the same. There's really no difference so they wanted to get more for their money and the Vikings were more than willing participants in the Texans desire.
They know in order to build on what they accomplished this past year is through the draft. They know they will get a comparable player at #42 as they would've gotten at #23 and still get the Vikings pick next year to further build upon. That pick by their estimates is going to be a high 2nd round pick since they expect the Vikes to slip in 2024.
For those who are so enamored about trading up to finally get their franchise QB. You better look at this list.
These are the last 10 QBs selected in the top 5 of their draft which the team who drafted them had to trade up in order to make them their selection.
Just about every team has regretted trading up to get what they thought would be franchise-making QBs.
Bryce Young (will be on a short leash since the coach who convinced ownership to draft him got fired in 2023 due to the team's performance-new coach is probably not that attached to him since he wasn't his pick)
Trey Lance (abysmal-now a clip board holder on the Cowboys)
Sam Darnold (underwhelming during his 3 team tour-now the Vikings fill in starter)
Mitchell Trubisky (on his 4th team as a backup since the Bears drafted him)
Jared Goff (only one that has a had team success on this list)
Carson Wentz (abysmal-backup on his 5th team)
RG III (injured in his 1st playoff and never recovered)
Mark Sanchez (did have 2 runs to the AFC Championship, but was a dud for most of his career)
Michael Vick (fantastic player who never could turn his teams into consistent winners)
Ryan Leaf (one of the biggest bust).
Those who absolutely believe the Vikings need to move up to the top 4 and finally get their QB. Well. You might actually get what you wished for and it might not be good at all.
I would much rather the team use the multiple picks they have and improve the D-Line, O-Line, DBs, LB, WR and still get a QB.
You can't rely on the D-Line they have now (Phillips, Bullard and now Tillery) to try and stop Josh Jacobs, Jahmyr Gibbs and D'Andre Swift 6 times this year, not to mention to try and get after their QBs. Then there's the remaining 11 teams RBs and QBs that they'll face this year.
Can't go into 2024 with the O-Line they have and try and stop Aidan Hutchinson, Montez Sweat, Kenny Clark 6 times a year to name just a few of the players who have given the Vikings O-Line so many problems.
You can't rely on the DBs this team has. You saw for yourself what Evans, Booth Jr, Blackmon, Ward and others are like. Murphy Jr is okay. Griffin who joined the team this off-season isn't going to hold up. He needs a strong front 7 to help and the Vikings do not have that now.
You can't rely on the Brandon Powell as the 3rd WR.
You can't rely on Pace Jr for an entire season. He's a good player, but under-sized. He's a good depth player for this team. Cashman is not an upgrade over Hicks. They're equals. You're expecting Greenard and Van Ginkel to give you a pass rush, but can they hold up against the run. You need to get a good all around LB to strengthen the Vikings front 7 so these other LBs can do what they do best.
You can still get a good QB.
You just need to know how to maneuver your picks by moving down and then up and get more picks and get good value for each and every pick.
Use your picks to improve as many holes as the Vikings have and you might see a strong recovery in 2024.
Use the bulk of your picks to move up to basically get 1 guy and you're looking at a tough 2024 season and beyond.
262 million dollar guy that hasn’t ever won a playoff game and lost a 27 point lead to the Jaguars.
This would be nice to have, but his contract is a major concern.
It's called "football" Dekiln. Figure it out.
Oh man I'm so out on Panix
It’s mind boggling to me whether you believe it’s a viable strategy or not that the Vikings have never drafted a top rated QB 🤦🏻♂️
My gawd that QB list of Vikings draftees is pathetic talk about change the culture we need to change the way first what QBs we draft and second how we develop these QBs this is why we don’t have a Super Bowl
Jared Goff & Jordan Love right now could be at very least #2 on that Vikings QB list 🤦🏻♂️
Without any doubt you take Herbert we could spend another 20 years hoping for a QB of that quality. When is the last time the Vikings had a young talented QB like Herbert? …. Exactly
Chances of drafting a franchise qb in the first round is fairly low. 20-30%. Or trade the same capital for a proven franchise qb. He is only 3-4 years older than the rookies. We know what we are getting. Chargers eat a lot of that with dead cap for the next two years. I think without a doubt, if this is an option. They need to heavily consider it!
I understand what both Declan and Mackey are saying and I personally believe Herbert is a top 5 QB in this league all day the way he shredded the Vikings last year was phenomenal HOWEVER I do NOT want someone else’s QB anymore Vikings go get your own damn QB for once a top draft pick make an attempt at a top 10 QB on a rookie deal for once FFS!!!!
Mackey, when you say Kirk did this with his contract and Kirk did that with his contract you mean the Vikings did that right? This was not a Kirk problem. This was a Vikings problem. I say get your own damn quarterback and build your own damn team stop taking teams leftovers and if you can’t do that, you’re fired.
Declan being completely against Herbert makes me want him on the team even more lol
I know everything you guys say is for entertainment and clicks but in what world does 11 and 23 get Herbert ? 😂
I don't think it was a conspiracy or anything so grandiose. Didn't the Vikings pick at 23 in a previous draft with this new administration? I seem to recall us having the 23rd pick in the draft within the last I want to say 5 years at most and closer to like two or three years ago
Didn't have much of a choice after the roof collapsed !😀 They have 100 million dead cap hit, there not trading Justin.
I don't see Herbert coming in to replace the aging vet being a Stafford to Goff type situation. I'd rather try our hand at drafting a QB
The better question what if you didn't trade for Hershey Walker?
I have spent an embarrassing amount of time on this year's draft and I actually thought about this scenario a couple of weeks ago. I have not dove into salary cap issues for both teams but cap games can be manipulated to make this work. I am personally a McCarthy fan and would love to see the Vikes draft McCarthy and have the next 4 years to beef up the non-QB portion of the roster. The reason a Herbert trade could have some fuel is that Harbaugh's first couple of moves were to cut M Williams & trade K Allen. Why would he make those moves unless he doesn't value paying WRs as he plans with Roman to play smash-mouth football. Does Herbert fit that scheme or is he a valuable trade asset? Was Harbaugh being honest when he proclaimed that McCarthy was the greatest ever Michigan QB? If so, would Harbaugh want to start a complete rebuild and have McCarthy as his franchise QB with the 4-year cap friendliness a perfect fit with a complete team re-build. I would not be shocked if Harbaugh makes a blockbuster Herbert trade to MN, NYG, Seattle or even possibly with NE or Washington. Doubtful that a trade is made with Division rivals LV or Denver. The Jets gave up trying to draft the next Mahomes and went with the veteran star strategy trading for Rodgers. At this point in their careers Herbert is a much more valuable asset as he could be the face of a franchise for the next 8-10 years.
