Most of us who enjoy playing PDGA sanctioned tournaments have never actually sat down and read through the entire rulebook. On the surface, disc golf seems like a very straightforward and intuitive game. However, this latest edition of the rulebook is full of interesting and sometimes even weird rules with implications that might surprise you.

Hey everyone it’s Chris Clark with disc goof doaw back to you today to talk about the PDGA rules let’s talk about casual obstacles what are they and what objects are you allowed to move and which ones must stay section 803 of the rules has some answers casual obstacles

Are loose items on the playing surface that are not part of the course loose leaves and sticks are casual obstacles but shrubs and picnic tables are not if you want to move a casual obstacle some part of it must be behind the front of your lie you can move this Branch

Because part of it is behind the lie but not this one even if you want to step putt into the area where the obstacle is now what about this Branch it’s loose and behind your lie can you move it unfortunately not since the disconnected branch is not touching the playing

Surface it is to be treated as part of the course and cannot be moved these same rules apply to any type of object if a spider web is blocking your line to the basket you can only move it if some of it is on the playing surface behind

The front of your lie if it’s only in your flight path and it doesn’t doesn’t touch the ground it cannot be moved so what about this Branch surely it’s way too big to be considered a casual obstacle right well actually there is no limit on the size of casual obstacles as

Long as you can physically move it within your 30 seconds and it meets the other requirements of a casual obstacle you are allowed to clear it from your lie okay what about interference you’ll most likely never be in a situation where you would need to reference

Section 810 of the rule book but knowing what to do when your disc is interfered with could make a big difference in your score if you throw a disc and it comes to rest even if the disc moves later on because of water or the wind or another

Disc the position of your lie is still where the disc first landed as agreed by group however if your disc is intentionally interfered with during its flight you can choose to either play from the first point at which the disc was interfered with or return to your

Previous lie and abandon the throw with no penalty if you’ve played enough PDGA sanctioned events you’ve probably had a card mate or two with bad disc golf etiquette but exactly what type of behavior does the PDGA rule book prohibit and at what point is it the card’s responsibility to call a

Violation the rules explicitly prohibit doing anything that is distracting or unsportsmanlike a blanket prohibition but they go ahead and list some examples shouting cursing moving or talking while someone is throwing advancing beyond the away player bittering and allowing smoke to disturb other players let’s talk about water there are a lot of

Misunderstandings about how you treat water on the course at some tournaments they allow you to take relief from casual obstacles the most common situation is casual water you can avoid standing in by taking relief backwards along the line of play so do you get relief from this water what about this

Water actually no the PDGA explicitly says casual water as it’s commonly understood in its liquid form the rules do not Grant casual relief from snow ice or even steam if you should encounter it so what happens when there is a misplay the rule book lists many different types

Of misplay each with their own specific remedy if a round has been completed and the player has neglected to play one or more holes this is known as an omitted hole and the player receives a score of par plus 4 on each unplayed hole if the

Player has begun play in a group other than the one to which they were assigned the player must find their assigned group and begin play with that group any throws made by a player in the wrong group are disre guarded the player is only subject to penalties for being

Absent from their assigned group but none for the disregarded throws if a group has begun play on a hole other than the one to which they were assigned and if any player in the group makes more than one throw on the hole the entire group has misplayed the hole the

Group completes the hole and each player adds two penalty throws to their score for the hole otherwi wi the players who have made a single throw each receive one penalty throw the group then proceeds to the correct hole to begin their round I hope you found our analysis of some of these rules

Interesting we’re going to be taking a look at other rules here in the near future but in the meantime let us know if you think we got these right or did we miss something a lot of these have some subtle nuances to them that you know can make interpretation difficult

  1. Ok, so if there's a 4 card backup in the middle of a round, and a hole that we had played previously is nearby, could I go throw some shots on that hole without any penalty? Assuming no one else is playing the hole, of course.

And if that would be allowed, would the ruling be different if I threw a few shots on a hole that we hadn't yet played?

  2. The stick infront of my disc is getting moved cause that rule is going to injure ppl … Even the person demonstrating almost messed up there ankle …

  3. So as far as moving a stick behind your lie it is NOT "dead and unattached" it is "dead and unattached AND in contact with the playing surface"?

  4. Had an issue with wrong hole in a tournament slapped together becuse city literally wanted a tournament 1 second after concrete hand cured on course so a local pro on lowest rung of Innova as a pro in 2008 he ran a tournament made in under a week as when he was told to have a PDGA Sanctioned tournament around 6 days. So, some holes in one tournament were not bagged up becuse wind took one of Bags in round one SO we played both baskets a temp, for hole as did all but group tournament director was in and asked before writing up correct scores on course having our scores on pieces of paper for hole. Also, everyone had to take a picture of handwriting rules becuse his printer a cheap Cannon Died and some of handwriting was poorly done like a Mando around tallest of 3 cottonwoods on a hole and all 3 were in same area and around same height where again all but his Pro card played all 3 trees as Mando without a drop zone.

  5. What would be the difference between 811.f.2 "Intentionally failing to complete a hole constitutes withdrawal from competition" and 811.f.6 Omitted Hole? If I get up to the tee and intentionally skip the hole because I always get a bad score and want to take par + 4, what would make it omitted vs intentionally failing to complete it?

  6. Interesting case happened to me. A guy in my card arrived late after we all completed our first teeshot. We allowed him to play the teeshot (even if in theory he was first in the order) and to complete the hole. After the round he got a par+4 penalty

  7. What does advancing beyond the away player mean? Is that like going up the fairway the group can't pass the farthest away? I thought that was just courtesy.

  8. I witnessed an interesting case of interference at my last tournament. My card just finished a short hole where the basket was at the top of a hill with a lake at the bottom. We were on the next tee (which was at the bottom of the hill) when we saw a drive from the card behind us catch an edge and roll down. One of the guys on our card raced out and grabbed the disc a foot before it rolled into the pond. (Why yes, it was his first tournament, how’d you know?) It took much discussion between us, the card behind us, and the TD to sort it out. The player on our card should have been assessed a 2-stroke penalty, but the TD gave him a warning instead. (He was so far back in the standings it would’ve made no difference.) The guy who threw the disc got to play it right where the other player stopped it with no OB penalty. While this should have been a boon to the thrower, he later told me that the whole scenario threw him off his mental game and he couldn’t get it back together again.

  9. If you see this, what's your take on the new 802.05 – Lie changes for 2024?

With the rule now stating "If the playing surface ends, the line of play continues on the nearest playing surface following that line," wouldn't that mean a player whose disc lands on the front side of a 10' wide tree can opt to play behind the tree base, opening up a potentially better angle with less hazards?

Just waiting to see this play out randomly on JOMEZ someday.

  10. There was a small discrepancy in the casual water. You don't always have to take relief backwards from the water. If you land on the side closer to the hole then roll backwards into the water then you are allowed to take relief forward from the water.

  11. You need money to buy a PDGA but to test requirements needed that makes no sense but dollars for them and no discs for your bag

  12. I would like see Chris discuss taking a lie, particularly in difficult spots.

I know that interfering with the course other than during or as a result of a player's throwing motion (such as holding a branch out of your line with your hand or arm) is not allowed, but i have had interesting discussions about blocking objects with your body, e.g. taking a lie inside of a bush.

  13. Great stuff! it would be great if some day you explain the edge cases of the mandatory+OB rules

  14. So if a Disc hits a fan in flight it could be deemed interference and the player could retee with no penelty?

  15. So why couldnt Gannon move that discbag he landed on last year? (forgot which tournament). Isn't that a casual obstacle?

  16. What if you throw 8 on a par 4 and still have ways to go? Can you omit the hole, take a +4 and go to the next hole?

  17. Anyone got a third party app that can speed up audio so it sounds like this AI is actually speaking in a human cadence? This robot sounds insufferable.
