I guess that’s more of a soccer style term for you know a general manager type role right correct yeah it’s um you know the the way the league the USL Championship has gone in the last couple of years since we’ve been in it um obviously there’s far more to do um and
The the head coach and my my role previous as head coach and general manager was two jobs really and uh and it’s it’s a little bit too much for for one person to do that and uh and obviously we thought that the best thing
To do was to hire a head coach so who could focus totally on the ACT the team coaching the team picking the team picking the tactics uh and not having to worry about a lot of the off the field stuff dealing with agents and negotiations contracts so we
Went for the sporting director role uh and up to this point as you said it’s it’s looking quite good so hopefully we keep going what what is it Trevor as far as because you’re you know when you’re DCS you are the culture there and stuff
Like that so um I got to imagine uh obviously maybe uh a little bit more time on your schedule but to focus more that you weren’t before but what is it I think the most important things that in looking uh for someone to succeed in being the coach because that’s you know
We’ve all we’re all big dcfc fans here and and the Championships and stuff like that and it just doesn’t happen overnight so to be able to sort of hand your keys right to to to the castle what can you explain that process that’s a difficult one that’s a difficult thing
To do you know we’ve obviously over the five years that I’ve been coached with Tiffany assisted me with a the off the field stuffff um we’ve built this culture um it’s a winning culture um obviously any new coach that comes in will will say that they want to build a
Winning culture we already have one so it’s it’s can you can you continue it but build on it slightly but we don’t need to change it that much because it’s actually a good setch so it’s tough to hand it over uh and as you said it’s it’s a learning curve for both myself
And Danny the new coach to to see how we work together can I just follow that out you bring up a great point because usually when there’s a coaching change made in any sport it’s because of lack of success or because the culture wasn’t right or they want to change it up or
You know go older to new or whatever the style is so I guess in you know in doing that because the culture was was already built did it have to like what was the most important thing for you to be able to step away cuz this is this is like
Your baby and you’re not stepping away but stepping into more of the parental role or the grandparent role I would say more than than the parent on the every day what what’s the most like I guess what I’m trying to say is what’s the most important part about dcfc maybe
That we see or we don’t see that starts with the head coach or the culture you’re talking about right I think you said Grand grandparent Ro because my age is that is that a I think that’s accurate Trevor I think that’s what you’re trying by the way so I can say
That okay no you’re right it’s a difficult one you know it’s it’s when we when we did the coaching the head coach search it was having trying to find somebody who who had similar thoughts we don’t want to you know we wanted somebody to come and improve it and take
It on and and build it and and obviously you know we’ve come off two great uh successful seasons in in the USL Championship with two playoff wins and obviously knocking off the number one seat so that’s all been great but you know we want to push we want a home
Playoff you know we have targets that we want to raise so we’ve given targets to the coach uh and him to take it on but as you say it’s a difficult one you know stepping away or stepping aside for you know the somebody to carry on that
Culture you you’re a little bit afraid that you might lose something but up to this point it’s been very very good so um you know let’s let’s keep working on it talking with Trevor James here on Big D energy Woodward Sports Network sporting director for Detroit City FC

Year you know we we only scored 30 goals in 34 games uh we made the playoffs but again we were very much relying on our defensive unit but very good defensively um so it was a matter of when building the roster for this year it was like
Making sure we kept those pieces you know the the solid pieces of the defensive side so that again we’re very difficult to beat we’re very difficult to score against um but obviously we had to do give a more punch up front so it was a conscious effort of of bringing in
You know Strikers and attacking Midfield players attacking Wing backs so would would all around the field give us more more offense and uh as I said at the moment as you said we’ve scored four goals in two games which is a good standard so you know if we can score two
Goals a game we won’t lose many games so uh let’s hope as I said said we had to look at the attacking side because we were the lowest scoring team in the lead so uh as as didn’t give you much to shout about in your commentary so so we
Had to look at that well Trevor you know it’s all about me right what can the club do for me right that’s what it is all I was thinking about how can we how can we improve your your outputs by we need Strikers so so we we we invested
You know in the sharp end as they say the the the tough end of the the field and and hopefully we’ll see the rewards this year well I appreciate it thank you very much I’m very happy so far you know what too right I can’t wait till Steve
