Upset it was an upset inside Wells Fargo Center final score Grizz 115 Sixers 109 big bat Ben if I remember correctly you you did take the the the Grizz plus the points during gp’s carry out what did you see let’s just start here what did you see that Nick Nick nurse clearly did

Not see well GP um I just I saw that the Grizzlies had beaten that Brooklyn Nets team uh that the Sixers turned around and lost to uh the very next day I believe maybe um was the second night of a back toback for the Sixers and uh they

Don’t have Joel embiid so that’s it that’s a lot of facts you put you strung them right together and it resulted in a Grizzlies Victory they uh it didn’t look like it was going to be if you were just watching in like quarter 1 quarter 2 quarter three Grizzlies uh were down 12

With 12 to go outscored Philadelphia 3416 in the fourth that’s how you win a game by six outscored by 18 in the final 12 minutes jiren Jackson Jr he was the star uh 10 of 25 for the field 30 points 11 rebounds six blocks but it didn’t

Come without a scare hit the hardwood pretty hard in the third quarter ran to the locker room at that point benett be honest with me be honest with me did it pop in your head oh my God this is exactly what GP was talking about yes uh

We had a long discussion yesterday about um you know sitting or or playing players um and that one clearly that in that moment I was like maybe everything that I said yesterday on the show uh is was not the right take to have on that

But he ended up being okay I will say dude like I’m with you when he went down and they showed the replay it looked bad like it did not look good I mean his his wrist Twisted in a way that it’s not supposed to and I was like

Oh great here we go even uh me and CJ were talking about it on JB’s show earlier like you could hear it and Pete Randa voice like when when when jiren went down Pete goes oh brother jar yeah we all felt it like we all felt it as

Soon as that happened so it was great to see him come back in the game um and you know knock on wood like jiren has has um has been available for the most part this season I know he’s been held out here and there for nagging injuries but

Um he’s he’s been a warrior this season and he’s um he’s been available so hopefully that continues into next year I don’t want to speak for you but I think we have settled after uh uh a lengthy debate over multiple days I think we’ve settled on hey they’re basketball players if they’re healthy

Enough to play you play them you don’t play them if they’re at 90% % or 95% or 99% but if Desmond Bane or Marcus Smart or Brandon Clark or anybody else is at 100% and available to play they’re basketball players they put them in a basketball game but even if we agree

With that sentiment we are aware that there is an inherent risk with it or at least you increase the likelihood that something bad can happen again we talked about this yesterday um you can never eliminate um the the the chance completely that somebody’s going to be injured you know

In their day-to-day life like someone in the chat said yesterday hey yes a basketball player could be hurt in a basketball game that means nothing but also could be hurt like quite literally doing anything else in the world and I agree with that whether you’re an NBA

Player or not um you could just be driving to dinner one night and being a car wreck that knocks you out for the season or even knocks you out out of this world happens every day I get that everybody gets that I I the the point I made yesterday is that you can’t

Eliminate the possibility for something bad to happen um by being more careful than you otherwise would you can never get it to 0% but you can lower the likelihood that something bad will happen by not doing certain things where bad things could possibly happen and for a basketball player that is playing

Basketball games so I do think it’s a a reasonable debate a reasonable conversation at least to have about what you do with a jiren Jackson Jr or a Desmond Bane as we head into the final stretch of a season headed nowhere other than the lottery but um even if we say

They can if they can play they should play you don’t have to push it to you know 38 minutes a game or second nights of backs to backs but broadly speaking if you can play you should play um there is an inherent risk to it and I just I

Can’t imagine any Grizzlies fan was watching that game last night and in the third quarter when that happens you don’t go oh my God this is exactly like the the one thing I didn’t want to happen throughout the season I didn’t need to see GG Jackson score 25 again I

Didn’t need to see uh Vince uh play excellent on both ends of the court again the one thing I needed to not see more than anything else was one of the players were going to rely on heavily heading into next season as his championship window remains open after a

Terrible season brought about by injuries and suspension the one thing I didn’t need to see is one of those guys possibly get hurt in a serious way and at least for a second it looked like that might be the case last night the good news is I think he was on the court

Like two minutes later like like really it was like two minutes later so it was a brief scare hey hey if you’re going to get scared Bennett it it’s better to uh to have that over with to minutes later right like you ever had to get an MRI

About something serious been you ever been in a doctor’s appointment where um they say hey we got to run some test on you and it could be nothing or it could be something serious you ever been in one of those situations yes yes and isn’t that terrible is that awful it is

Scary yeah it’s scary it like genuinely scares you because uh you go through life going I know these bad things happen but not to me and then you’re in a situation where somebody’s telling you might be you this time so you’re scared I’ve been in these situations and uh you

Know luckily fingers crossed um fortunately for reasons that don’t make any sense uh you know I’ve never heard the the awful awful awful news um that that that some people hear every single day but I can remember the moment between hearing we gota we got to look

At something and uh and and then the moment when they tell you hey it’s okay not some big deal like all of the time in between those two moments terrifying and that’s what we got last night with jiren Jackson Jr the good news is that

Uh you know last night we only had to wait two minutes to get to the the the good news and I i’ I’d rather have good or bad news quickly than than have to sit there and like imagine if we were sitting here today still right now at

This moment wondering like is jiren going to be okay we’re waiting for an MRI that wouldn’t be a fun way to spend a Thursday would it no it would be a horrible way to spend a Thursday GP a horrible way to spend a Thursday big bet

Bennett so luckily we got the good news very quickly last night he ran to the locker room that was scary oh no two minutes later he’s back on the court everything’s fine great again 30 points 11 rebounds six blocks he was uh good and the main reason the Grizzlies were

Able to win on the road also good tell me if you believe in this Jake laravia winning you over talk to me about it so this is his second game with the double double um he’s been playing well I mean he’s had a nice like five game stretch

As of late and it’s it’s interesting because me and Roser have talked about this like you’ve you’ve got to have guys on your roster that are on good deals and he’s on a rookie deal which is obviously a good team-friendly deal um he’s you know unless they move him he’s

Going to be here next season and maybe the season after that and you know he’s a guy that’s not lived up to being a first round pick uh at this point in his career um he’s also dealt with some injuries over his career but you know in theory

Like I think then this team is fully healthy you know Jake larab is probably a guy that’s coming off towards the end of the bench right and what do you always say that you wanted the end of your bench you want shooting at the end of your bench right well in theory he’s

A good shooter like he’s actually been been more productive in rebounding getting to the rim but you know he’s knocked down that three-point shot um a little bit more lately and that’s valuable to a team to be able to have a guy on a team friendly deal that could

Come in hit some shots for you grab some rebounds um I think that it’s intriguing what’s happening with him again it’s a super small sample size so many guys are out who knows what it looks like next year but I’m encouraged by what I’ve seen out of Jake lately man hopefully it’s

Something that can continue like through the rest of this season seven of 15 from the field last night two of four from three 19 points 13 rebounds three blocks he got 14 points 10 rebounds two nights earlier in Brooklyn two games before that 21 points against Portland I do

Think most folks had sort of given up on the idea of Jake becoming useful in Memphis at the trade deadline I I I think some folks wouldn’t have minded it in fact some folks would have uh been thrilled if he would have been one of the guys moved uh to another franchise

For whatever you could get with him get for him rather um the issue of course is that I’m not sure what you could have got for him at the trade deadline might have been nothing and so he remained with the franchise and I don’t know where this thing is going either um you

Know I I think there’s a long list of people who have scored points or played well in what is uh largely considered meaningless basketball games keep in mind uh even though Philadelphia is not headed to the lottery Philadelphia is headed to the playoffs they are without Jo lmb tyes Maxi is in concussion

Protocol they’re short-handed as well this was uh the classic uh March middle of the week game with two rosters that are uh both banged up if not completely decimated so you know it is what it is this isn’t game six of the Western Conference Finals but still um you know

You’d rather see Jake perform like this than than not and if you were looking for anything to hold on to that maybe you keep him in the franchise on a small rookie deal and uh continue to develop develop develop and then perhaps you can look up maybe next season and feel like

You’ve got something that is reliable off your bench maybe he’ll never live up to what you hoped he’d be when you you used a first round pick on him but maybe he can be just a a back of the rotation guy uh on a bad on a a favorable

Contract for the franchise who could come in knock down shots and maybe grab some rebounds here and there and then you’ve got a useful uh player that you selected in the draft a few years ago that’s the hope at this point wouldn’t you think yeah yeah I think so so it’s

It’s been encouraging with Jake I’m glad to see him have this uh this nice stretch right now cuz it’s been a rough go you know in the early parts of his career for sure and I’m sure hears about that too like knows it and sees it I’m always

Interested in what it must be like to be awesome at something pretty much your whole life and then suddenly realize you’re at a place where it’s not going well you might not be good enough to be here and whether you are or not there’s a whole world telling you that you’re

Probably not like that must be very very difficult imagine you know you cuz any NBA not any not any but most NBA players are going to be people who well before they got to the NBA um well before they were Prof professional basketball players or even for the ones who played

In College college basketball players they were like the best player on their team like think about if you’re eight years old 10 years old 13 years old 15 years old you’re always the best player on your team you’re always the leading scorer you’re always in the starting

Lineup you go to High School same deal you go to college same deal you get to be a professional which is your lifelong dream and it happens to go hand inand with a nightmare I always dreamed about being here but this sucks because I’m not playing and when I do play I don’t

Play well and people are telling me I don’t belong here and now I’m starting to think that maybe I don’t like that must be an incredibly difficult thing to go through so I don’t know if what we’re seeing right now is real I don’t know if

It’s going to hold up I don’t know if it’ll ount to anything I don’t know if we’ll ever talk about it again and honestly we wouldn’t be talking about it right now if this season were headed where we thought it was going to head but you need something to talk about so

It’s good as anything else um I don’t guarantee anything going forward but just on a very human level I’d rather him have this type of stretch than the type of stretches he’s had otherwise in his career so was a nice night for jiren Jackson a nice night for Jake laravia a

Nice night for the Grizzlies and uh that’s two in a row it doesn’t mean that the season’s turned around but uh winning more turned around okay oh benett says the season is turned around so that’s G be you know what’s crazy they actually have an opportunity to

Finish above 500 on the road this year isn’t that wild they’re 15 and 17 on the road well it’s wild if you think about things like that that had never even crossed my mind I know when I saw that CJ brought it up and when he I he was

Like I think they’re like 500 I was like no they’re not and I would dude they’re 15 and 17 on the road like they got a real chance to have a winning road record this season well you got to find you got to find your joy somewhere posi

And if that’s if that’s if that’s the thing that makes you smile that they might finish 500 on the road in the season head of the lottery then hey smile away I I’ll I’ll start rooting for it if you want me to make a file I’ll

Resigned to Our Fate but if you want to find a new goal to to to to to to strive for I’m happy to do that too we need things to look I really do believe it’s very important in life to have things to look forward to and if we can start

Did so season two better thumbs up thumbs down uh I think better than season one the problem with you know I heard somebody say this I think it was my buddy Chris Ryan at the ringer when season one came out he talked about how there you know when he watched a

Documentary The it’s the 30 for30 test right which is what if I told you blank blank blank right and there were too many of the episodes in season one that it was like what if I told you that Jordan spe and Justin Thomas are friends you know mean

Like like who cares right and and then the ones that stood out were like or like the Tony fow is a great family man or if uh you know the Joel Damon was actually really good but this one it’s because when it starts it’s all the live

PGA stuff and the main character is Rory and so getting to see Rory kind of behind the scenes is fascinating to me and then there are certain things you know there’s I can pick nits with it but I will say like you can tell even when

They get to say the Masters and Brooks K’s got a chance to win it like Rory really cares that someone that is in his class like one of his peers he’s very aware that Brooks has four majors and he has four majors and then you fast

Forward and you see Brooks win the PGA and like it bothers him it bothers him and then they have like some stuff a lot of the wives are involved in this one a lot of Paulina a lot of Jenna a lot of uh you know the the whole Liv and PGA

Thing and so first two episodes you look I I will say I was at least entertained by the first two episodes and there are certain things the second episode lot of Ricky Fowler and his wife and so I think they went bigger stars on this one right

Cuz a lot of it’s Rory a lot it you know you’re playing the hits with Rory and DJ and Ricky Fowler and that’s kind of the first two that I’ve been through I think the third one is Joel Damon and kind of what he’s gone through since becoming

Famous because of Netflix nobody cared about Joel Damon right and so I think it’s kind of interesting I I’m looking forward to it look I mean it’s an easy watch and I do like getting to see the behind the scenes stuff you know so I watched that after the grizzly game last

Night all right I’ll download them I’ll put them on the plane uh on the flight home tonight let me ask you this um and then we’ll get to basketball I think it was at at certainly at some point in 2023 don’t make me put a date on it but

Most of us thought okay they’re reaching an agreement Liv’s going to go away and eventually the live guys are going to be back on the PGA tour as we sit here March 7 2024 live is still happening there’s still playing those tournaments PJ tour still playing its tournaments there is

No connection between the two in any sort of tangible way do you have a sense now where this whole thing is headed I don’t think anybody does I don’t think anybody and I think that’s kind of you even get at the you know there there’s part of the show where J manahan’s

Talking about like he’s meeting with all the PGA people and he’s like you know I kind of get myself in trouble with you know going into more details right that there’s so much to be figured out but I think that it has come to it’s come to a

Point right now where they’ve got to get this thing figured out sooner than later I saw the other day because everybody now otherwise this has been my experiences here and you know I love golf it’s until they get it together where the best players in the world are playing in the tournaments

Simultaneously it’s tennis yeah people watch the French Open people watch the US Open people watch Wimbledon PE you know it’s that’s when you’re going to get people to tune in people are going to care about that stuff cuz even the Genesis the tiger numbers were not it

Wasn’t huge you know it wasn’t huge and obviously he was not there for the weekend so that hurts but you want all the best players and I think you know even Rory even some of the other guy they want all they want to all play the same tournament they all want to play

Together and they want to play against each other and that’s kind of their vision for the future of golf but obviously got a lot of figuring out to do on the NBA Grizzlies win last night in Philadelphia big fourth quarter they’re down 12 they outscoring by 18

They win by six there was this moment in the third where jiren goes down looks scary but he comes back very quickly so we didn’t have to be scared for long but is is that the type of moment where you go oh oh no this is the thing some

People had been talking about or hey it’s basketball these things happen sometimes yeah I think I was I’m so um callous to it now you know I mean where it’s like it just happened so many times that I just sit there and cross my fingers and pray for the best um

Obviously it didn’t look great but having him come back in the game and then not only come back in the game be the best player I mean that was promising thing about last night is there’s been a lot of situations where jiren Jackson has been the best player

On the floor on both teams you know and I think sometimes it can come down to that and it did last night we even saw we experienced it over the weekend when he wasn’t playing the best guy on the floor was Anthony Anthony Simons you

Know we do this all the time when it gets to the playoffs like who’s got the best player and there’s been more situations than I would have expected where Jaren Jackson Jr has been the best player on the floor and I think that’s promising and I do think that that can

Reap huge benefits going forward one thing I will tell you though you did the whole uh Jake laravia you know it’s got to be hard when you’ve been awesome your whole life he has not been awesome his whole life he spent way more years sucking than he has being good right and and

Like everybody remembers the one year at Wake Forest but like before that he was a mid- major player you know he was a major recruit the whole deal I recognize you want to know what’s crazy his junior year he told me he averaged like two points a game right

Like he is the biggest outlier like there’s only a few of them that are really like that because I remember I was I talked at one year media days I was asking guys about their High School experience and like with Desmond Bane he’s like I did not get a power five

Offer until a after graduation after he graduated from high school I did not get a power five offer and it was cuz somebody had left and jamy Dixon had left pit and was going to TCU and he’s like you know basically you’re a good dude I think you’ll be you know no

Matter what you’d be great to have on the roster as a bench guy and in the locker room and so he offered him a scholarship to come to try to play at TCU he was like before that it was all of these like you know Missouri Valley

Type teams and whatever and I was like were you awesome in high school he’s like I average like 30 something a game nobody cared I don’t I think because this is this is totally a coincidence I I don’t even know if you can find this but I would encourage

Anybody to go look for it if you care TCU got off to a really nice start in Desmond Bane’s freshman year and I can remember literally walking to to from my hotel to the studio here in New York the same walk I make every day on the phone

With Jamie Dixon recording it for a column I was going to do and he spent a lot of time talking about and the Freshman like I didn’t know what we were getting but this kid Desmond Bane like he could really play yeah like I remember having that and if I remember

And I might not remember correctly it was something about positionally like he was not a shooting guard in high school as much as he he was an undersized whatever he was he was undersized something and that really caused problems with his recruting well and he probably you know he’s probably he’s 6’4

Coach I’m gonna be the high major coach guy he said fine so you start thinking about who do you want to spend three or four days with and I didn’t know Tom ISO well at the time but we did know each other and I always found him enjoyable and I said

You know what maybe I’ll just start there and he agreed and when I say we spent every minute together for three days except for the minutes we were sleeping I mean that’s what we did we had breakfast together lunch together dinner together we sat at basketball games together private planes together

Rental cars together every minute of every day for like three straight days except for when we were sleeping the only times we weren’t together when we would get to the elevator at the hotel and it’d be like all right what time you want to meet in the lobby in the morning

7:45 all right Tom see you at 7:45 we spent every minute of every day together and after a while you run out of basketball stuff to talk about and after a while it became pretty clear to me we were no longer a columnist and a basketball coach spending time together

As much as we were two husbands and fathers living life on the road and you just get to talking and once you’ve heard the Fab Five story and how that recruitment went down and once you’ve talked about winning that National Championship with matin Cleaves and once you’ve talked about every other

Basketball thing you can think to talk about you end up in conversations about hey just tell me about your family how many kids you got and the conversations naturally turn more personal and at some point keep in mind it’s a long time ago I don’t have a transcript

If it was as simple as that I could fix it right just don’t work as much just go be with my kids go be with my family he said the problem is that every time I’m with my kids I feel like I should be at work every time I’m at the park I

Remember him talking about little Steven who would have been 11 at the time I did the math on it he said if I’m just at the park and my son swinging and I’m pushing him I never feel like that’s where I’m supposed to be I feel like I

Why am I not watching film God I got a game against Michigan in two days I’m constantly conflicted because I never feel like I’m in the right place and that’s a level of being uncomfortable that bothers me all the time and I I didn’t write any of that

Down I don’t even think I recorded it I don’t remember conversations I have with people all the time that has never left me that there’s this man that you look at from a distance and you go seems like a great husband great father obviously successful in his career but he’s not at

Peace with himself because he feels like he’s missing things because he knows that he’s not spending as much time with his family as he would like to or should but the reason is because he feels like he needs to be constantly connected to this demanding job

And he’s never quite able to find that balance and so fast forward to last night here’s this man who has already acknowledged privately to me and I’m certain with other people as well that he missed a lot of his oldest son only son’s uh childhood and yet over the past five

Years because his son has been a walk on at Michigan State they’ve gone from you know going several days at a time without seeing each other sometimes even weeks to spending every day together over the past 5 years and that all culminated with this sweet little moment last night in the postgame interview

Andy Katz conducted let’s watch it together she got the W and you have your son right here who in a few moments is going to be on to kiss the floor you’ve been waiting 5 years for this Stephen longer than that your whole life you’ve been waiting your

Child the last 5 years you’ve been with him every single day what has this meant to you to be with your son these Last 5 Years and bring and get that time back with him well i’ tell every man and woman out there that coaches a men’s or women’s sport if you
