The Daily Mail’s Craig Hope has been speaking to Eddie Howe at Newcastle United’s training ground ahead of Monday’s trip to Chelsea.
Here, he reveals exclusive news on the club’s search for a new sporting director & why Pedro Neto is a player they’re keeping tabs on.
Also, Craig has spent time with Anthony Gordon this week – click here to read his exclusive interview (it’s free to sign up for the first month)… https://shorturl.at/mnDN4
Recruitment meetings are are going on all the time and lists will be extensive but one name that I thought was really interesting this week that was put into me was that of the Wolves Winger Pedro Netto well hello again from the streets of gos and I know youat sometimes like a
Little weather update well yeah here we are guys it’s cold and it’s windy it’s not very pleasant at all quite why I insist on trying to produce video weekly in this part of the world I I don’t know my wife is also asking me on a fairly
Regular basis where’s all the hair sprak on well uh well yeah it’s uh it’s needed but anyway we’ll uh we’ll plow on and uh I’ve been at Eddie’s press conference this morning there was plenty to get through there a really really newsy morning and the first place to start is
Anyhow confirmed the exclusive story I brought you during the week with regards Kieran trippier and his injury trippa will miss the next two matches that’s down at Chelsea on Monday then Manchester City in the FA Cup he won’t go away with England the injury the C
Problem will be enough to keep him out until the end of the month now there’s a chance he could return against West Ham on March the 30th mind for information is that is pretty much 50/50 it’ll depend how how tripier reacts to treatment over the next couple of weeks
Now yes that is a blow how can it not be a blow Kieran trippier has been if you’re talking newcastle’s player of the season and we’ll talk about one of these players just shortly you know you’d say it would be trippier Fabi and Shar Anthony Gordon in there in the
Conversation is that haran buo this is going off into an entirely different video isn’t it something to revisit it’s a good subject that but anyway no just going back to trip here the point I’m making is how can losing a player we we all think so much of
Uh not be a blow but it is it is lessened by by the emergence of Tino livero and it is a chance for him in his natural position as well we’ve seen livero come in at times at left back uh you know once or twice on the right I
Think he’s looked absolutely fabulous in both positions but now he’s going to get a little run two games certainly you know potentially three I think is the likelihood uh and you know let’s see how he gets on because the summer business has been has been knocked and by by
Myself as much as anybody really you know and I said that really early in the season just to revisit that that I thought they should have done more to impact to start 11 now in terms of in terms of this campaign anyway again that’s a different video we probably
Come to that again in a few weeks time when we when we reflect on this campaign but the the the one signing who I just wish we we’d seen more of really is is Tino liendo because wow you know when he has played he he could have if if he’
Actually had a run this season you know in a in a perverse world of Kieran trippier had been injured this year and thankfully he hasn’t been injured if he hadn’t been Tino liento might have actually not only established himself as Tripp’s replacement at Newcastle but potentially in the in the England setup
As well I think he’s that good it’s the one position where Newcastle do have a real genuine backup option now what else was there in terms of injuries nothing really new to be honest with you just quickly everyone else who played last weekend against wvs they’re okay going
Into the squad on Monday Matt Target he won’t make it you know I think Eddie House said yes Wy potential could be in the squad that preferred if he had a little bit of extra time so we shouldn’t expect to see him and I think they’ll go
With pretty much the same team with livero in for tripier is started against wolves now one player we won’t be seeing down at Chelsea is Lewis hall because it’s his parent Club even if it wasn’t even if he was allowed to play we still wouldn’t see him because Lewis hle sub
Unused as he’s as he’s now become known yeah that that is I was going to say that mystery deepens it’s not really a mystery Eddie how is spoken on the record about it as to why Lewis Hall isn’t being used I think it’s 11 appearance so far this season four of
Them uh four of them starts three of which you came off at halim you know we’ve spoken we’ve spoken a hell of a lot about that uh one viewer just giv a little toot there uh which very nice uh so yeah uh and Eddie was pressed again
On this this morning you know what is the what is the situation there now my understanding is that Lewis Hall becom the Newcastle player next season isn’t entirely dependent on what Lewis Hall does uh the the criteria part of the stipulation is newcastle’s league position I don’t know the exact number
On that but I believe it is a fairly low league position I’m sorry guys for those of you who like to enjoy the manions of elmfield Road just over my shoulder there it’s a wind tunnel it really is uh and I think going forward uh elmfield road unless the residents club together
And do something about it yeah that’s going to be a selfie stick free zone uh in the future just uh just far too windy doesn’t land itself the good sound uh some might argue something which dist starts what I’m saying isn’t the worst thing in the world now here is a news
That I revealed exclusively in my nufc notebook column which is available this afternoon at mail online and that is that new gastle search for new sporting director has begun and that they’ve Enlisted the services of internationally renowned recruitment firm oers burnston yet they’ve got offices in 31 countries around the world real Global
International reputation and that just shows the the ambition and the intent of the club to bring in to bring in the best in the business now they’ve been enlisted from what I understand conversations have already taken place they’ve identified who the top candidates would be I think that’s a
Pretty extensive list uh in the piece which I’ll put in the link in the description below one or two names are mentioned uh are mentioned in there there’s also as well you know the the possibility that there could be a redrawn rule for Steve Nixon inside the
Club he’s so well thought of he’s impressed the new owners since uh since they came in so so yeah I think there still might yet be a little restructuring and a redrawing of how they work but really interesting news that a recruitment firm uh have been
Have been brought on board to lead the search for Dan ashworth’s replacement the latest on Dan asth as I understand talks are ongoing I still believe a fee somewhere in the region of 15 million pound would see Swift progress they aren’t at that number just yet so we’
Have to keep uh we’ have to keep watching that one but yeah things are moving now behind the scenes at Newcastle also within the notebook column as well listen recruitment meetings are are going on all the time and list will be extensive but one name that I thought was really interesting
This week that was put into me was that of the Wolves Winger Pedro Netto now from what I understand Newcastle are looking at right Wingers to upgrade on Migel almeron who we all thought could have potentially left to go to Saudi Arabia in January that didn’t happen but
As far as I know they’re still looking to improve that position Netto is one of the names on the list I to say I love him as a player I’ve watched him for for for a couple of years now I think he’s quick I think he he he runs hard he runs
Fast in both directions really skillful only 23 big Improvement left in him goals does have to improve but we’ve seen the Improvement in a player like Anthony Gordon under Eddie how uh so yeah why couldn’t they do the same with someone at or anyone for that matter it’s just interesting that they are
Looking at players in that position I’ve been up at the training ground to see Anthony Gordon this week had a a fantastic hour with him now there’s a certain perception of Gordon that exists I don’t mean on t sight I think you know us guys you guys we’ve got the the
Flavor of of what he is now but I do believe there is a a wider perception in his words I an now with him uh you know his first exclusive newspaper interview as a Newcastle player he was tremendous company he was open he was candid he was
Honest he didn’t shy away from anything I’ll put the link to that interview in the description below but he said you know that that Scout scul perception of himself does exist and having spent time with him not that my mind needed to be changed I knew there was a a different
Version I’ve I’ve said that since the start of the season I’ve spent time with him out in America as a as a group of journalists and seen him train and seeing him play at close close quarters over there but honestly to have that time one-on-one with him like I said my
Perception wasn’t changed but it w it was altered in a way why whereby I left thinking even more of him to sit there as a as a 23y old at the end of it he got up and he stood there and he said I’ve I’ve never done something like this
Before I’ve never had an interview where we’ve explored such a rang of subjects and he found himself you know speaking so openly about his childhood about perception uh about the the the issue that issue down at brenford he’s an gear for that was absolutely tremendous and
The anxiety he felt in the days after it how he spoke about Eddie how was was so strong in terms of he said you know never mind what Eddie how dump me as a football player what he’s done for my life as well so please if you can click
On the link in the description below it’ll take you through to the to the mail plus interview that you’ve got to sign up that is free for the first month but you know loads and loads of great great content on there and takes us on to Anthony Gordon and England now again
You know I keep on saying this we spoke brilliantly about England during the interview as well did not hide away from his uh his ambition to uh to go to the Euros in the summer you know he said he’s his partner was nagging him to book
A holiday and so far he’s he’s refused to do so he’s told her that Germany is very nice and I honestly I really hope that he does get that that that inclusion on Thursday in GTH Southgate Squad Eddie how was asked about that this morning while he he said you know
He wouldn’t interfere and that’s G decision he knows what he’s watching he’ll have his own opinion you know Eddie spoke glowingly about him and it’s the level of it’s the level of consistency really and and what I love I say this all the time Don I I love
Footballers who play players who play and Anthony Gordon gave a great quote whereby he said availability is the best ability and I I I fully back that Anthony Gordon’s only missed one game this season and that was because of suspension all that while yes there’s been you know one or two tiny little
Dips but nothing whereby you would ever say he was out form he was just for for small little periods out of brilliant form is is is what you would say you know he’s been a consistent permer 15 goal contributions now this season 10 goals five assists uh and I honestly
Think he is worthy of inclusion in that squad for the for the fourth coming friendlies both of which I’ll be at against Brazil in Belgium so we’ll have to uh we’ll have to keep an eye out on Thursday but when you think of foren and sacka yes wow you know two tremendous
Players they are probably nailed on starters and they’re somewhere ahead I honestly think think having a player like Gordon uh in the in the squad and honestly he is of good character this myth that he might not be a good tourist a good traveler a good player around the
Squad does that exist among some perhaps it does but it’s not true if it does it is a myth you know and I just think the way a manager a man like Eddie how speaks about him someone who is in many ways Cut From the Same Cloth as G
Southgate I’ve got a lot of time for both as as people you know spent a bit of time R GTH with England now I’ve got one or two thoughts on as a as a manager separate the W but I think as a person is’s fundamentally a decent guy and
Anthony Gordon they’ve got one of those two Alli to a tremendous player so if you’re watching Gareth put him in that Squad Newcastle have got a game down at Chelsea on Monday yeah we’ forgot about that hadn’t we and someone sent me earlier what do you think will happen
What’s your what’s your prediction well I honestly don’t know because you don’t know which version of Newcastle is going to turn up and you don’t really know which version of Chelsea is going to turn up and to that end I’m going to probably go with draw I think but can I
Make a case for for Newcastle win well absolutely I can and that is if they do what they did did last Saturday night against wolves I said this in the postmatch video didn’t I I think it was a it was a victory for a game plan well
Executed a game plan hatched by Eddie how recognizing what he had recognizing what he was up against and for me for the Eddie how would disagree with this but I think for the for the first time in a long time I saw a a definite shift away from what we’ve seen in recent
Weeks and adapt into a certain situation and making a pay and in the end running out comfortable 3-0 winners and for that the players and the management deserve nothing uh nothing but a laws I’d like to see them do something similar again because in many ways it was a it was a
Regression it was back to back to the style and the pragmatism of the Season where they avoided relegation when Eddie how first came in now Eddie has always wanted to move away from that honestly conversations with him it was why the S Sandro talii wanted to move to a more
Possession based passing uh you know weathering control that’s what he wanted to go toward WS Saturday wasn’t that they weren’t they were in control by not being in control really if you know what you know they seated possession they sat in they protected themselves and the played of their strengths on the break
With that pace Joe Willie coming back in was absolutely huge and enabling that to happen I think that’s the way to go forward between now and the end of the season it’s a bit of a shop soil season it’s damaged there’s been players out injured it hasn’t gone exactly as they
Thought it would for various reasons Sandra Tal’s Bann you know all of that so why not during the remaining 11 matches just apply pragmatism let the opposition have the ball play on the break I hope they continue to do that on Monday I think the will CU I think that
Is what the resource learned itself to and if they do do that and if they can ReDiscover an identity the thought they’d Left Behind really like I said you know previously that was a almost a previous version of Newcastle but if they can ReDiscover that and make that
Work between now and end of the season I think it might just be the thing that takes them back into Europe now speaking of identity or a lack of it I noticed Amanda stav Le this week spoke about Steve Bruce and she said yeah that the former manager didn’t even want to come
Into training following the Takeover now I honestly think that report is being taken a little out of context and that I think Bruce didn’t want to be there for for reasons you know around his own toxicity I think was what he said at the time so I think that has been taken a
Little out of context but I honestly think it could be taken another way there were episodes previous to that before the ownership came in whereby not that he didn’t want to come into train I wouldn’t go that far but but certainly you know we had the case where he was
Flying back from Portugal the players turned up the train in the morning Steve Bruce was on a was on a flight back from a weekend away uh and the the players were Furious absolutely Furious that he wasn’t there and I know that’d come the end a large section of the squad thought
That he was taking the yeah the the Michael so to speak so while I think Amanda stav’s comment like I say has been taken a little out of context I certainly think there’s a a different argument to be made for for Bruce and his application to training and the the
Want to be there prior to to new ownership coming in so uh so yeah but I thought I thought it was interesting it generated a little bit of little bit of coverage this week and uh yeah he’ll uh he will continue to uh to give us something to uh something to talk about
Uh I will say that for Steve he give us plenty of he always give us plenty of copy now speaking of Steve bruceet has just reminded me of a Big Joe uh Joe Linton and his contract situation as far as I’m aware there’s been no real update
No progress per se Eddie how was asked about that again this morning he said you know the situation hasn’t changed as far as he uh is aware and it Remains the case that you know Joe Linton has got an expectation of a salary Newcastle or somewhere below that will they will they
Meet in the middle you know let’s hope so I think you know Eddie reiterated that day how Keen he is to have that situation resolved thank you again so much for watching guys as I said I’ll be down at Chelsea on Monday bringing you my post match thoughts after that game

When you say there's a certain perception about Gordon, I'd go along with that.
My perception would be that any player who refuses to train to get a move is not a player we want.
I'd also suggest he's lazy. Yes yes yes, he gets back now and again, but that's just it – now and again. When things are happening elsewhere on the pitch you can see him left midfield , loitering without interest. And what happened to the speed merchant that we signed? The guy who was considered one of the fastest in the league? Not much of that serious sprinting going on these days.
And here's the biggie for me. I just don't like the look of him. I put him in the same category as Joey Barton and Craig Bellamy.
When Leicester won the league we were all stunned. How did it happen? Ranieri's a genius! Then, next season, they were rumbled because clubs figured them out, and Ranieri didn't have another trick to fall back on.
With us, if the opposition play the high press back at us we go into a defensive panic mode – like we did at Wolves. Remember the old 9 at the back, Benitez used to get stick for? As soon as we get out there and see that they are playing high, that's it. We panic and the only way we are going to score is on the break. We 've got nothing else apart from the high energy press.
So when teams like Wolves come at us with our own tactics why don't we just play high back at them?
Super vídeo looking forward to reading the Anthony Gordon interview 😊
Ex-pat wanting Jesmond 🙏😀
Neto hasnt played 20 games in a season for the last 3 yrs ( he will probably manage it this year ). His output of goals and assists is no better than miggies. 60m 😂. No ta
I can see Liverpool and Spurs going after Neto as well tbh
Southgate will ignore Gordon as long as he has a hole in him.
Matured so much under Eddie howe game has improved he looks like he loves the game value has doubled Pedro neto please get him quality player.cmon the TOON
21m for ash worth, not a penny less, time to start showing some teeth in negotiations, we have already showed we will not pay a silly nufc tax for wanted players, even if it means missing out on that player, it makes things harder short term, but it’s absolutely vital, longer term, so easy to become Man Utd, who are still years away from being healthy
Steve Bruce is a mackem end of
Neto is too injury prone
Do you think Ashworth will still end up going or might Man Utd go elsewhere having now sabotaged NUFC short term, and could Ashworth be back with his tail between his legs or left to rot?
And with recruitment rather than be linked with £60m injury prone wingers, would we progress better with Graham Carr style talent spotting, likes of Cabaye, Cisse etc al (who weren't necessarily the top identified targets due to the previous owners frugal approach but proved good value) with a view to improving them as individuals, filling out the squad with more quality and selling some at a profit but also actually keeping some of that talent too, rather than selling them to improve our competitors?
Great post as even Craig, would love to see the interview but subscribing to DM while Oliver Holt is employed is a no. Holt has been so slanted in his views that it taints the DM
Whilst I think the club will be monitoring Neto, I can't see him being our first choice. He's not keen on tracking back & is more than capable of throwing his toys out of the pram during a game. Kubo would be a much better choice. Our main signing for the summer should be a defensive midfielder. This will allow us to be more expansive going forward. I'd like to see Manuel Locatelli from Juventus sign in the summer. Also a right footed central defender. Schar isn't getting any younger & we need to get a replacement embedded in the squad for when he goes. My choice would be Tomori from AC Milan, purely because the wages De Light would ask for would be too high. Also, if we are getting a right winger I'd keep Almiron & sell Murphy, though that's just me.
I was guilty of thinking of Gordon as a Scouse Scally, well worse actually, and didn't want him at all. Totally wrong, he's been a brilliant signing and deserves to be playing for England, no doubt about that. Neto, in my highly suspect judgment, is one of the most exciting players in the league and I would love us to sign him but what do I know 😂
…as a Gosforth native, i have to point out that it's snowing here in the northern Spanish mountains….thanks for the reports…..and some shots of my paper rounds…..!!!!
Good vid. Gordon would be good to have in the England squad. Slightly different to what they have and can play in a few positions. Provides an outlet with his pace and no one like playing against pace. Defo good for England if under the cosh when playing possession teams
surprised never mentioned Amanda confirming you were right about Steve Bruce and have you recieved a apology from simon jordan
Hi Craig, Great video. I always look forward to hearing your views 👍 Regarding AG , so pleased to hear the glowing reports about him, especially from someone like yourself who has had 1 on 1 with him. I spent a night having a few beers with some Evertonians a few months back, and they slated the kid to pieces , and they were proper scouser, it was shocking the way they spoke of him. So pleased he is doing well and in good form.
One thing for sure is that he certainly has the backing of the black and white army. Cheers Craig
Id rather it be cold and windy when its 39 degrees in Melbourne 🔥 🥵
Overall I think Gordon has been our player of the season – a place in the England squad is deserved but Southgate has his favourites.
Netto would suit our style but he'd be another injury-prone attacker to add to Wilson & Isak. Probably need to strengthen other positions first anyway.
By any chance were you in Metro Centre today Craig?
Another great episode Craig. I think that at last we can approach matches like Chelsea with a fair degree of optimism. The squad is stronger – a number of players have come back and fitted back in with relative ease. If Wolves is anything to go by, we look stronger, more competitive and seem to have plugged some of those gaps in transition when defending. I really feel we can get 3 points on Monday . Thanks again Craig….
