I N Good uh morning and welcome to the bows New Zealand coverage of the 2024 Somerset National mixed peers championships broadcasting live to you from the pat 2u Bowling Club and we are down to the round of 64 my name is Alex Reed and I’m joining commentary today by

Simon uh poppleton uh poppy how are you feeling about today’s bows well should be exciting Alex as we getting down to the point in the the event obviously the all the teams have played their section play having to win their four games out of six to qualify

So that in itself has been a bit of a task and now we come to uh come to post section round of 64 these two teams have um already played a game this morning which were both quite thring quite tight game so they they’ve actually had a

Quite tussle good tussle to get to this stage so um should be really game four good players here Alex yeah uh looking forward to it for sure uh we see there Nick Thompson and Jenny Stockford and they will be playing alen Gardner and Trish crout so the point shift team with the

Met early so Jenny Stockford with the first ball obviously a bit warm Alex got the cooling r on around the neck yeah yeah yeah it’s uh it’s not cold so this morning um Alvin and Trish defeated Jared and Dyan Smith 108 so that’s a very very close game in a in a

Game of a game of two for2 pi and uh Nick Thompson and Jenny Stockford they had a very good game as well against Darren good and Tina ainson what and that was 164 so yes so you could say both both teams were on on a nice Siege

To to win their first game so um it’s always good to have a good tight battle first game Alex isn’t it really rather having a blowout yeah it’s a nice way to start a day for sure um you sort of feel like you’re up for the battle sometimes when it’s a little

Bit easy running perhaps it’s uh not so good that b there beautiful line from Jenny Stockford so we have the Elven guard a trush crew combination with the blue disc on their bows and the Nick Thompson Jenny stock with the blue red did I say

Blue twice there Al I think you did say blue twice there but that’s okay I’m going to go with I’m going to go roll Now with uh Elvin and Trish with the red disc balls and Nick and Jenny with the blue then that makes more sense isn’t it then

Two two uh two the same color I think so and you can see that at the uh the top top left of your screen is the uh the blue and red indication Thompson a member of the U ockland intercenter team going to Wellington in a couple of weeks I believe

Nice first B he’s uh the holder of a BS ockland uh gold star Nick Thompson been around for a while was a very good cricketer as well first you do find Alex that um if you’re good at one sport they this definitely uh helps in uh transferring those skills

Over to BS hand all coordination Sports especially not the start album would be after but can only improve from there as they say good lining El is yeah it is good needs it to come back down good oh lovely e Gardner very experienced Poler good to see his name uh pop back

Up again Simon been a while since he’s been in the uh in the to the Forefront Alex yeah he sort of um had a lot of success early on he won the the new the New Zealand peers with uh black sign 2012 in the New Zealand fors uh with Blake

Signal Robbie Bennett and Clint Carol in 2010 so had two or three years there where he was going really well he lost the New Zealand singles final too around that time to Mike Kahan at Browns Bay Bowling Club this is close here from Nick this is what Nick does

E those uh middle four dra isn’t yeah yeah can see how they’re a a dangerous team Nick and Jenny having made the quarterfinal round little flick of this event last year he’ll take that he will he’s had three extremely wide balls with his first three ball so

He yeah you might a little bit of uh alteration to go on with his last one but this is next game Alex isn’t it just the just a draw to the head just Plastering the Jack he’s so consistent and the com curse comes on us of

Course I think they can blame you for that one Simon thank you thank you I’ll take that credit for that sorry sorry uh Nick Alvin on the forand sorry you expect him to um to correct from his first three oh he’s I think he might have undercorrected he

He’s got a bit wait on got to be careful here that Jenny balls is going to Clank into that’s a poor ball and little bit of work can see there the p a two2 Bowling Club and it looks like there’s a bowl right at the back of the rink actually

On that camera angle to the left of your screen as you see it so yes there is who B headers will be pleased that exists I think that must be Trisha’s V the back there Jenny Stockford here the the cooling towel how long do they even work for if

It’s sunny I don’t does it are they affective I have one of those yes I do have one of those Alex and they are pretty good to be fair when on a hot day look into it um just yeah it’s just a matter of uh obviously soaking it with

Water heing get a bit of a snap and then putting around your neck they um they do do provide a bit of relief when it’s War obviously you have to is there 21st truck going past now we do have to you do have to obviously keep uh weating it because they obviously with

Your body heat they do tend to dry up within probably oh probably probably an hour Alex I suppose it’s good close here from TR crew little work off that ball square and follow lovely effort there really you can see the blue stickers the two closest ones giving herself a ball behind the

Passer here too and which good just set in too so a similar sort of weight I would think from Trish she’d be you know she really can’t she’d be really unlucky if she she rolled her own bowl out of the head there without getting some sort of

Result off the front front one of Knicks so so on the forehand Trish cre see here from the players point of view this B she’s not far away Clean Run still be one down snck the Jack back a slice of hell no that’s sure is that not trous no

Ises well it’s a slice of Heaven that’s two well Trish she plays a lot of lot of skip balls in the in the woman’s teams Alexa she will be uh obviously pretty pretty good how to read a head and how to what shots to play when so um as as

Well gen of course but um so that both be really good combination of these two I think should be a very absorbing game Al Gardner on the back hand what sort of balls they he playing with Alex I would say they Hero by the look we’ll

Have a um a closer look at those when we can Al gers bows it’s always of interest uh what bows players are playing with uh Nicks bows I think we’re first uh featuring on Noah’s Ark uh they do a good job for him he’s often threaten to change the bows but he plays

So well with them there’s no reason uh to do so are they green a green master of some sort no they are a green master that plays with yes yeah lovely shot yeah g looks like she plays with xgs I’m assuming does she yeah she plays with

Xgs and those are heroes that Elvin is using yep the uh the only leaves Trish Trish’s bows to dissect what she plays with I think she has been playing with GTS The dimple grip and if you yep turn your head on it side no maybe not So Much Better Effort from um Alvin

With his first two bows his um first a was a bit of an aberration I think from him so um he’ll just s s settle nicely to a stride I think from here pretty good from Nick lovely ball he just do this all day right and both Nick and Jenny very

Similar in that way they’re very consistent on the draw so they’ll just consistently uh sort of plot four bows within 3 or 4 feet I’ve played a bit of mixed Piers with uh Jenny Stockford at an Oakland level where we’ve successfully lost quite a few semi-finals and finals heavy memories

There wonder where was wonder where was going to come up this um she’s very very consistent so it’s lovely to have as a mixed pce patterner that someone who’s always going to put the four balls in the area and nickers the same so Nick won’t be overly aggressive will

He um Alex his main strength I supp is is drawing to the Head isn’t it so you don’t you won’t see a big drive out of out of Nick do you think I’d be surprised if I’d be surprised if you did yeah we just uh yeah see this ball make its

Way right to the back I think Alin probably a bit more probably bit more aggressive of the two of the two men I would think you don’t ordinarily see Nick Play More Than A a meter or two on yep that ball there just going out of

Our our view see it just back must seen the danger at the back yeah I think think you’re just probably aiming to be a bit closer than that I I think so yes but not wasted there as We Know probably a little quick I think from what she’s after defer I mean he’s

Probably looking to to draw another ball on the head to be fair but um again not wasted where she where she’s ined up see from The Players Point of View you can see that the two red sticker balls at 12:00 of Trish cruit so if uh there is

Aggression like we suggested there might be that’s never an unhelpful bow yeah still got enough uh enough balls to wrist on there for TR isn’t she really she’s got edge off there edge off there set the white ball set the the big white ball and then we’ll set the little little white

Ball looks a bit line Alex is it I think it’s very close’s a bit more interested oh just going to D away another one hand is just smid white again I think from gen you might be Tri one over that’ll help one hurt anyway let’s tighten up that line for

For Trish to get in on the forehand isn’t really absolutely what you expect to see it looks so inviting there if you just add a little bit of weit now on the forehand side you see there that blue sticker bowl that sits at 7:00 to the Jack is looking actually quite lonely to

Be honest sticking with the forehand so still probably try just sneaking under that blue ball if it holds it’s brilliant got enough weight to hold just underneath the line weight for the short I think Alex yeah Trish CR too uh has been successful in mix Pi event she won the Orland open

Mix peers with Neil fiser last year if my memory serves me correctly or perhaps the season before that she won the um the the North Harbor have a quite a prestigious booking Pier ladies Pi that I’m pretty sure she won this year as well very good shot from jie that’s a

Lovely bow there from change the that definitely change a shot for Alvin I think although he still has got the two bows there isn’t he to the to the as we see to the right of the screen the left as you see it now yeah so as he makes his way back

Down interesting to see what shy Ops to play we get an insight into his game I think because if you look at it from The Players Point of View you got those two red balls at the back which you could just hoof it too or you could draw it

Off to the two red balls to the left so sort of some players would drawing starts yeah some players would go full blooded at that and look for the balls at the back to count others would look for the balls to the right and that was sort of

Halfway between the two of them Simon yeah that was that was a danger really wasn’t Alex put and that um the other blue bowl over into there but as you say they probably got three or two at least 2/3 there but in very hard to draw but

Again it’s uh you’re playing to your strength that you really if you if your strength is just your draw and basically just a draw really with the greens running so quickly it’s just basically draw you just get in contact with sitting the the shop B the Jack and you’ll get a

Result a look at that weight from from beautiful speed i’ be tempted having a b this you’ve got third and fourth and fifth and sixth shot if you get rid of the two that hand that yep think that’s the that’s the indication Trish bit more of a get in

There what’s the harm to a full blooded SM here don’t see any harm yeah good call he’s close too oh oh it’s popped out to the side [Laughter] bit of a bit of t pin and it’s gone bing bing bing pinball should say and way she

Goes oh there’s the little man with the Dead face how good poor Jeffy we are working on that we’ve had some good feedback for this we’re trying to figure out how we can put a a a sound effect uh to the the dead or the killed

Jack so like to hear us the sound effect someone dying that’s what no well that’s what we have to be um we of so if anyone’s got any ideas what noise you’d like to see go with this like maybe like the or something like that uh to go with

The sound effect the old the old Pac-Man one is it that the old Pac-Man yeah when Pac-Man was it when they when you game over see you later yeah the game over is the plan so we’re working on it but open to suggestions

Right that was a l in we have uh we have a first Alex which is uh more than what has been happening so I’m quite pleased absolutely I think we might have had e morning game with with uh with Mo and with um Robbie we didn’t have too many

All I think maybe one did we I think just the one and look he’s sort of I that’s a a fortuitous result right um it was exactly you probably meter and a half through and you’ve him this near the jack on the way for CH as result but you’re not up

You wouldn’t be upset about it as a player you just uh once you realize you’ve overcooked it and it’s on the tight line you cross your fingers for uh picking up the Jack Square yep and Nick here potentially just falling that bit short you see they just frustrated with

Himself well Alvin the first te coming this way had three extremely wide balls isn’t he so he’s really compensated and and boarded in and um the say the first one would have been probably another another probably 2T narrower if he had to hit the Jack not bad here again though but little quick

Maybe hangs in yeah it stayed up yep so Nick playing this ball and when it comes to rest we’ll just rewatch that Pinball Wizard pinball Wizardry uh from Alvin Gardner who killed the second end look at this watch it goes to the right and then the left how good there oh dear

It’s a great kill meanwhile Nick played an absolute bomb there drawing the shot so a good correction if you look at his first ball that it’s uh considerably short of the Jacks so very good correction there from Nick we see uh some people in the in the corners watching on and kayin

Huler in the uh Forefront of your screen he in a uh he we in a tight game with Gary Lawson we would think yes year two very good teams there kin playing with Bri ainson and Gary playing with Wendy Jensen sort of a youth versus experience there

Because Wendy and Gary were both playing for New Zealand I would say around the time that uh well if kayin I’d be surprised if it was walking by then and Bri certainly would be as well certainly wasn’t on the planet so just an example of how long you can play this sport for

Really what sort of a line from jinny here very close here from Jenny Stockford might be a bit unlucky here no pretty good be happy with that Beauty with this game as you get the four bows in the middle to make all your Corrections off Simon indeed exactly you’d be confident

With if you playing the same shot four times um if you miss once or twice you better you think you hope you in your own mind you better uh get a right for the for the theater and fourth one just s around that they’ve almost sort of committed

Themselves to playing the the forehand here haven’t they Alex the um the gardener cruit combination yeah they have trying to get themselves through onto the it looks a bit quick again from Trish I think interesting they’ve got that ball at the back always want to try and build a head

Techly that’s the thing I mean it’s um it can be easy to do when you’re playing when you think you’re planing you you four balls that you need to you need to get the shot we we don’t need to get the shot shot you you need to get uh get a

Head built and and give yourself options don’t you yeah and what we mean about building the head up is literally it’s just bows that are in handy positions so the head’s building up that’s I mean it is what it sounds like isn’t it yep well youve got to counteract what your

Opposition is doing so if they’ve got four balls in in an area that you don’t have one at least they’re four ball short um you need to get yourself in in that area just to counteract what they what they’re going to try to do um tres

Just a bit quick through the get nothing that’s not going to hold up I don’t think is it oh stay up on the wow look at that surprised it is so options for them they’re two down and then they got a little option but they’ve only got one B

Really any gen not that one goes the old wave no um yeah there only got that one B really that’s anywhere near the head Alex hav’t they so they can’t afford to lose it really maybe while they change that the uh point of attack to the to the back end rather than the

Forehand um they’d be two down now so it wouldn’t wouldn’t really matter if they if uh airl wouldn’t set the blue bowl over the the blue blue bow if you know what I mean yeah and the back end which is on the right right of your screen so it

Makes it impossible to to chip out elvin’s thirdd shot well it makes it very unlikely doesn’t it nothing’s nothing different P the ball no it is balls and we’ve seen it before um so Elvin has G the back end so probably just trying to say sit sit to

Nick’s shot bow I suppose and um work his way in there somewhere or even set it over I suppose he’s uh he’s got enough weight to do some damage look at this get one of them chipped one out around that’s a very good bowl there from Alvin totally changed the complexion of

This head too absolutely so any move any sort of foot twoot movement of Jack from um with Elvin with his last ball he’d be uh in Clover but Nick’s got to get another ballhead another ball closer is say Jenny just confirming that they are holding the shot still now Conor forend I think

Uh leing both a little bit there might unintentionally block up the back end side sort of tighten the line a little hasn’t it yes yep is good it’s on that side is good that not good the other side but that’s all right you you get what you get as they

Say this will be within tent again for Melvin set the bow clean through or or we a bit of Jack he’s more jack isn’t he anything I think might be through yeah this clean run I like the intention that that elvin’s shown which is to be more aggressive rather than less and

What should be interesting is that’s not the game that Nick plays so we’re going to see uh two completely different styles of of bows here and two teams that are very good at doing it y you say it’s the old story Al you got to play the strength don’t you

Absolutely so that will be trying to draw second shot here on his forehand and he looking no I think so not quite the white is he I didn’t the green oh it’s holding up remarkably well w we unbelievable if he’s made it do yeah I know for all world look to be diving

Away didn’t it uh one look good quality bows are the first few ends Alex I have to say yeah you can see how these teams have made it through to post section so here’s the first J throw length from Jenny gone right to the back and it’s gone right back back no stopped

It’s a fairly full length end for the uh this coming this way might be a bit quick but looks yeah and that’s because it is that full length end isn’t it it is you know the Green’s still running a bit 18 seconds 7 18 seconds I’m assuming that is that’s been running

Beautifully for the entire time I don’t think Trish is uh being going to be on the o either Jesus okay so from from The Players Point of View that’s nice that they’ve gone symmetrical go there you see a bow to the right and a bow to the left correction time

Here much better that’s a beautiful bow from Jenny Stockford lovely correction can see um some really nice uh drun bottles as well down the skips end stacked up nicely variety as well looks like there’s a cap and a bottle TR is that quick again getting on the check no yeah g onto the

Ditch twice but look at those that’s cool so there’s one 8:00 a.m. get started 9:00 a.m. to 300 p.m. keep drinking don’t give up almost there you did it and refill I like that that sort of that’s good it’s quite motivational quite absolutely I feel motivated having read that but uh on the

Crossover now Jenny Stockford with the only Bowl on the rank it’s because of that 2 meter length end isn’t it as a play you think oh yeah is a little bit further make sure I’m up and on these quick greens it’s actually it’s not as much of a a correction as

You think it might be always frightens me that first ball Nick Thompson is in danger of doing I’ve just uh I’ve exaggerated that brilliant he’s pretty good he detou I think danger of drawing an absolute good shot Nat and he’s tacked in behind Jenny Stockford bow too it’s lovely

That look to be a bad line it’s close here at all just stck at last second just a sming it’s the what oh B Nick to draw another three within 2 ft ARS great and is CL close good ball good buildingin 2 ft but you’re very good still a very narrow

Target isn’t it absolutely that’s better say the it’s like there’s nothing to nothing really even rest on to be fair um from for Elvin elvin’s point of view the only rest he’s going to have on the forehand probably is the is the is the shot ball then he’s bit quicker this time

See you see good shot it’s a really it’s a really good shot absolutely perfect so Nick thomp no real danger for Nick if he’s yeah no danger is he wouldn’t think so slightly out pinch the line but it’s a lovely weight like if you could work

Away you look at that head and there’s blue sticker balls everywhere so you start thinking to yourself how can we make the most of this that’s probably by sitting next shot B up and over once or creating a shelf then you can then try and use the Shelf otherwise you’re in

Danger of just scoring the the one shot and it feels like a waste when you’ve played such a good end yep the um camera man was in bit of danger there for Melvin he that I dropped it as soon as he let it go is that still max out there

Alex is it yes it is yeah Max doing a good job still got no head on so Nick you let me down with your third ball it wasn’t within 2T but hopefully you Rec rectify the situation looks a bit tight again AL is he or is he holding no he’s holding yeah just

Underneath the line up and over careful oh no this could be oh oh my word that’s a Calamity that’s a Calamity you you’ve totally dominated the head and you’ve you’ve had one ball which you’ve been unlucky with and you’ve uh you’re one down and hard to get

To I mean a bit unlucky I the chances of getting that balll exactly there were quite low uh for sure just unfortunate and the way it’s set in the head and we’ll just go to a closer view in a in a second as we see this ball of Alvin garders it’s

Actually locked in that red sticker ball yes so you almost have to fromin ah Jenny has to play that split doesn’t she on the back end side she does scoot as close as you possibly can to Nick bow that sits a uh 11:00 to the Jack almost

Going through the split or Jenny’s blue sticker bow if she can that’s what it looks like from the players end so it’s easy to talk about but I mean look at that that head that’s fine margins here that’s a good hit of balls El really that is a very good hit of balls

And just um you see that just um Nick was just dead unlucky with the with the way the when he set the ball up and over how it’s How it fell really and Alvin played a crack of a bowl with his last one to to sit his bow

Where it is as you say on the on the back there about um about 7:00 is it you need for sure look at this oh lovely effort it was a well played ball open the open the Open The Gap too Al so she’s um nothing in the way there

For now to to go again with the tech for sure and uh she was right on the with their first ball so I’ll keep your eyes peel for the second nothing the shot isn’t likely to change here not a lot can go wrong too you fear

When you look at the head as it sits oh well the shots changed now that’s right in the way do you have to play it on the forehand or do you or do you play a subtle bow up and over on the Blue Bowl yeah Jenny’s going to play it on the

Forehand side try trying and to get around Trish’s ball oh same speech he said so we’re going to see a bit of wait here trying to clear Trish’s front bow through the blue ball of jenes she’s Let It Go needs it to come back here you goit the com too wide for that

Speed I think this will be uh gra grab the check you’re not playing the last one Trish I like that oh I love it that’s brilliant it’s a bit of a shorter in here for Melvin still the mat still back most of the way but uh probably 34s

SP that’s a good startat cly there’s a good start interesting too Alex when we talking about bows and and size and styles that um majority of players I’m I’m I’m going to go with 70% would play with gripped balls of some sort dibles or grips or Z

Grips whereas Nick Nick has got a a smooth ball um no no grips no dimples and the players that do have the smooth balls uh tend to be very attached to them like they they find they can’t play with the the gripped balls which is interesting I think I’ve ever had a set

Of uh smooth balls to be fair it’s quite nice to have the grip but uh so I prefer it without it and yeah Nick’s had that set of balls for a very long time and had a lot of success with them when I first moved up to Oakland I

Watched a an inter Center practice and Nick was playing two and a fours team for the ockland team and I think uh uh it would be one of the best performances at two I’ve ever seen it was very similar to what KY did in the world fors

Final in 2016 I don’t think he missed aive an unbelievable exhibition it’s a great game when when you get in Rhythm it’s a great game Alex isn’t it when you get get in your Rhythm you just let him go you know they’re going to go in the right right place

Every time it’s a great great day here one of those ones it’s been a few qu out wide there there Al just the quite probably big though the weight was probably a bit too much yeah that felt that one felt more like um the weight to be fair because

You can see it sort of came back to the center line just that it’s a shorter a shorter end Jenny needs this bow to hold needs it to hold just sort of underneath the line the entire time that well there’s the correction look bit line yeah looks a bit line Mr Speed speed’s

Good handy one lovely weight building well now they’ve three red sticker balls uh closest to the Jack so important that Jenny gets a ball on the head here needs it to hold needs it to hold just underneath the line good one to correct from yep a in a bow in a good spot Too Alvin asking for a backand shot why would he be asking for that switch Simon well he’s got a good opportunity she can either sit the sit the ball down of her home ball down or get S past that she can cover those two blue disc balls

That are past the head the ball past the head is what effectively what she’s um looking for and um I think she’s going to do the first one sitting that bowl up and over so that’s pretty good that’s sitting nicely that’s actually stopped the Jack probably getting towards um the

Second bowl that Jenny put down but um yeah very good handy ball well played really again that’s what yeah that’s what we saying about building the head outs isn’t it really you’ve just got to get balls in in in positions where you negate your opposite scoring a number if

They Happ to um play a good ball so um it’s a little bit cover cover cover lovely try from Jenny Stockford and she’s got one more Bowl to go it’ll be an important one looks like Mount heeden balls on the shirts there of Trish crew and Elvin lovely Club

Trous ball just happy with that one there no reason for jny to change he still sits the the Alvin shot bow or or SS a jack so plenty of options down here look a sming wide it might come back it might come back here now yeah coming home now wow wow that’s

Class good shot she’ll be pleased with that first two bowls were underneath the line the third bow is overplayed and the fourth ball perfect and that is the beauty of this 242 mix Pierce Elvin just asking some questions so that’s what Elvin can see from his

End he asked if that was Trish right at the back which is an interesting question does it mean he’s going to go quicker rather than more gentle do you think Simon well it just means he can afford to you know he can afford to be there I

Suppose Alex just on the on the draw if he’s a sort of you know 2T through he knows he’s got a bowl over the head um if the Jack spays out the side there he’s in the area just going to duck under he just duck perfect weight I

Think really good weight a good place for his bow to go again from the Players Point of yeah so the Jack would shoot out almost at a 90° angle to the right from the players’s point of view if Elvin was able to get down to it around that front bow of

Knicks although good options either side would be fair now you want this ball to swing if you’re looking Jenny try get in the way yeah which is what he’s accidentally done I think that’s actually brilliant I don’t think you can play the same Bowl again if you’re Elvin

Gardner you know see The dimple grips there on those bowls they were popular with the ulo bows uh they they said that it was like a um a golf ball he’s close in the area how was he just going to duck he would have thought to himself

All I need to do is get around that short bow and it was somehow narrow that’s that was almost I would it feels like it was unlucky because it was well played interesting too cuz he did have options on this forehanded Nick’s playing because he’s got two balls to

The side to the to Trish’s ball to the side there cuz he he could have played that this hand and um got a similar sort of result couldn’t he if he thought the ball was maybe in his way but so already played one then go again and one shot

To L and Jenny so the score two for now on the fifth end now thanks to go to the Alor gaming trust for their support of this Sommerset Nationals assistant is much appreciated look at that blue sky Alex and the lovely clouds oh beautiful absolutely beautiful day again here at the Patu Bowling

Club had a perfect week really the day that we were most concerned about actually ended up being the sunniest day that we’ve had which uh was a pleasant surprise the greens too here have held up brilliantly and look at this bow from Jenny Stockford right on the jack that’s a good ball very

Good Trish using the old fashioned chalk chalk now not the spray Alex I see I um I can’t talk that’s usually what I do steal a bit of the uh steal a bit off the um scoreboard do you it’s donated by the scoreboard the uh acquired for the super are yeah thank

You it’s a rcky mistake um I still remember at Point CH Bowling Club I think it was Keith uh in his uh earlier bowls days was been helpful and he put all this chalk out at the start of a day’s tournament and the the rockiest thing

You can do is put the new chalk out at the beginning of the day uh because the bowlers that told him to go oh that’s good there’s new chalk that’s my donation I needed some more yes beautiful we did lose a lot of chalk that day Simon it all

Disappeared just watch this from the I don’t know what’s got out of the way I was going to say the Players Point of View any second from trash yeah she wouldn’t necessarily have wanted to take that much weight off that ball would she the drawing to the 2 met mark would have been

Okay y speaking of scoreboards Alex have you been to the ururi bowling Club out south of Teri and no does it have the tell us about the scoreboards they do have some wonderful scoreboards which you do not need chalk um because it’s uh they they they uh how

Do I explain this Alex I’m now now I’ve opened a can of WS I can’t explain it is it the digital looking numbers no it wrote the numbers rotate they’ve got a spinning wheel which spins the numbers um very good actually that’s aming quite quite unique yes it is so I

Know there’s a scoreboard and Christ church and then also the same ones at ponon B where there’s no chalk on the scoreboards but it’s like um you know on digital digital clock the numbers are that way so so it’s 1 2 3 4 five I think there’s seven lines that you flip over

And they’re either yellow will blend into the scoreboard and you can make the numbers uh okay in that way requires a little bit more brain power as we see Elvin Garden here this could be brilliant oh lovely EIT oh good stuff now the urinary ones are they’re closed

In this they’re sealed units and they’ve got um um you you so obviously you tune the tune the school but you’ve got these pedal which you tun pedals the wrong word um what’s for Alex but anyway you turn them and you do the school that way so it’s it’s really quite

Good so on the back end that’s an interesting so we spoke about um Alvin gardy lost a New Zealand singles final a closely contested one uh Browns Bay Bowling Club so it would have been two uh players with a static delivery in a New Zealand singles final about five or six years ago

S well look as we know there everyone’s got different styles and different uh um you know stances when they play their ball um I think uh like probably what 20 years ago that static stance was was quite popular especially down south and you a lot of the bowlers down south had

That static stance I think they suit the the quicker greens that we have in New Zealand we had a national coach he’s actually from the pat tutu Bowling Club John mer who had a static starts used to take a step and then uh swing his arm and it means you have you

Get a lot of control uh on those those quicker greens because it is only your arm that is moving Elin just on a tight line could go inside out if it gets the right oh actually needed to be a little bit narrower than that and he would have got

The two Wicks instead of just the one second shot not bad they they probably need a bowl over the head though they’re sort of a bit lacking with that one bow of Trish over the head haven’t they twoo sort of s o’ clish but um they could probably do with another ball pass

Ja and the area B here from Nick that’s a very good blue sticker ball good and bad Alex would like it’s give gives gives El something to rest on if he’s if he’s again if he’s just playing with um a couple of feet through

He’s got now the E Bol to rest on to um he looks a little bit needs it to turn little bit wi prhs wi with the weight probably just a clear run I don’t think mind where it’s going that’s good for Trish right she could wind up a little bit more at that

If she if she so desired the only danger with winding up is so Jenny and Nick have first in second and then third shots elvin’s at 11 then Jenny ni have fourth and Trish has fifth so Trish could chip off Elvin Ball but it’ll probably Cannon KN out

So’ only be two down uh therefore I’ve been rambling for no reason because it’s just a tacking on the back end for trash isn’t it well it is I mean you’re playing with the again you’re just basically being there on you she either ball I mean

She’s two down now the where she goes if she chips Jack sideways would be probably two down again cuz her bow will probably follow through so and best result obviously is she she Trails a jet clean or sets one of the sets one of the

Shot balls and we talk about ways to M and trasure almost think you almost think to yourself I’ll just try to move Nick’s bowl that that blue sticker Bowl that’s to the right of the of the Jack or the left now as you see it from the

SP point of view you almost think I’ll just try to go through that and if you are narrow you can get a an even better result a more ideal result well you see yes from that perspective there all the balls on the right hand side past the Jack uh red

Disc Falls aren’t they pretty much majority are yeah so if she can she um Can Say sit sit through the outside shot bow which you see standing up or grab the Jack to the to the right as we look at it from from from this end um yeah pretty good result be

Interesting making your way back down Alvin what are you doing it’s okay we’ve got a we’ve got a plan B substitute plan sing it out how far did it go slice yeah it’s slice of hell I think absolutely can see there it snuck SN snicked over to the right snuck over to

The right and two blue stick balls so still probably only two down isn’t she really so no probably changes to what she was prior to so and a bit more room it’s a nice enough bonus well there from Jenny she’s she’s counting so Trish see this is one of those times when if

You think about Trish’s last bowl probably has finished level with the Jack so for Trish it’s actually not a correction of weight that she needs to make it’s just a correction of green she just needs to aim it out wider than what she just did double teot not near good

Sign yeah the dble Qui but she she needs to land if she land something she’ be okay oh well he had to stop not to be probably maybe a three Alex but looks of it two it was the two all not a disaster you’re optimistic Alex are we

Looking for TR we’ll see motorbike the motor bike’s loud enough to be honest that was that was loud enough it didn’t Rumble the ground like a truck does no the uh the trucks F launch shake the entire commentary we’ve got a while we’ve got maybe 15 seconds that we can stay on the

Shot uh okay any second now any second okay all right take well there’s a truck coming back so we’ll take it it’s come back an empty one that’s that’s as good as you got Alex Oh not a Lo Tru close enough those are the one the ones coming back we don’t

Mind because they’re empty uh and therefore quiet but the ones going not so much fun both these teams playing very well bit of a shorter in here though isn’t this is the first real short one that not real short but the shortest shorter in that um that uh um nickas

Throne can see Martin McKenzie’s come out of his office too to to watch the bows in behind the players it’s a lovely bow there from Alvin of course you’ve got quite a big crew down there Alex 7 it’s got a it’s not just a one member B um for BS New

Zealand there’s plenty going on here there’s a a good group of the staff down to assist with all aspects of the event close here from Nick Mt enjoying a second cup of coffee by the look actually second only second one you reckon what’s the time 12:26 second coffee Elvin Garder now on

His back end beautiful first bow so just looking to back it up oh he’s taking a high line probably not what he was hoping to play there look how much that came back though s that’s not the end of the world did long way now zling there seems to be good normally

Good value for taking green outs isn’t there yes for sure players make their way back was how many no go now go for your life I forgot what I was going to say now I was going to say that um I know we had 200 200

Entries for the for the mix piers and we got 86 qualifiers elex 86 yes 86 qualifies that’s that’s seems to be a good number doesn’t it that’s pretty good there were a lot of evenly contested sections when you go looking through the sections a lot of evenly contested ones a couple of heartbreaking

Ones where you saw a couple of teams uh Dominate and therefore lots of teams on three out of six which is one shy of what is required to win yes but a good number qualified and a good number entered it’s really satisfying to have this event be as

Popular as it is it’s 400 people taking part in a national event and it seems to have certainly in section play a slightly different vibe to the fours Simon people playing and PE combinations that they haven’t played with before mix piar is still not played a huge amount in New

Zealand we have seen the mixp Championships Etc but we don’t play a lot of a lot of mixed bow so novelty is not the word I’m looking for but it’s just got that different vibe to it doesn’t it a good feel I agree yes I just had a um interesting text from a

Good friend of mine uh Alex who asked if I put in the plug for his business but um I’d probably think we have to find some money going towards B Zealand for that wouldn’t we Rod Leach plug the man well I plug the man and so yes if if

Your company comes on board as a sponsor for the uh for B new Zeal absolutely Rodney no problems at all good we can talk details later on we can talk we can absolutely we can talk details later on Rodney give me a call Rodney we’ll sort that

Out jny on the back know I did look I was looking through some results last night Alex and there was some of the players that needed to win lost by one yeah be heartbreak right absolutely that’s a really handy ball there from Jenny Stockford finishing very good yes the bottom left of your

Screen it means that she can essentially play exactly the same bow again and back it to get a a better result because you’ve now got what we call a a position bow which is does what it says on the box it’s a bowl that’s in good position same ball again bow or Jack

Either replace the bowl for two or tra the Jack back for two came out smoothly which uh off the is a good sign definitely good start anyway look at this I think more for the ball oh ni swim turned viciously again good white though good oh did it what that hook

Really barely late didn’t it so again you’d be thinking maybe that um Alvin and Trish would be putting a no they’re not U maybe putting a bowl on the forand side yeah I negate that scenario but um anyway that’s the the ball in the head it’s the risk you take isn’t it

Because balls is all about percentages so Elvin and trush can try and draw another ball close or draw a second shot knowing that they’ve left a shot on for Nick to Trail it back to the left literally where he’s standing there on your screen you just get the rake out of

The garden shed Trail it back to there for three Al they could have covered that and that would have perhaps uh mean that Nick would have had to to thought of something else to play of course it doesn’t matter if you play if your opposition doesn’t execute the

Shot so there so many things uh so many things to consider well that’s right you can’t as you say they they can’t cover everything as they say well looks I mean the hand has been swinging but that definitely looks too wide isn’t it for that sort of shot lovely wait

FR beautiful speed and now maybe the cover so Trish is interesting here Trish is asking El to play on the forehand to draw to the second shot bowl of um next so if he if if he comes underneath and sits up Bowl up and over this there

Is two red disc bolks sitting there waiting or he can actually dive under to and and actually be fair he’s got Trish’s bow at the front there if he’s wide to sit through so you’re not not a bad call yeah it’s a proactive shot isn’t it so you’re you’re changing your you’re not

Covering an opposition bow you’re you’re playing a shot to change what the opposition can can play but uh she’s been overruled just going to play as back no thanks I’ll come this way thank you which is fair enough as you say you you give your your partner the the

Options and if they feel they’re happy with um the way they’ve the way that he’s done this here yeah look at this from Alvin Gardner that’s beautiful and he’s covered that that’s beautiful no other word for it it’s the only one down jny say so it’s just more it’s just more the de

Draw now you’d have to think from from Nick yeah you’re looking to De draw the shot here yep cuz that shots that Trish called for Elvin to play with the first ball still on on the second ball to try and that ball out for maybe maybe a

Couple more not sure can’t on the head but needs it to hold I think yeah tight wasn’t a great effort there from delicate very delicate sort of shot wasn’t it really to be fair we know elvin’s only holding one would you just draw your back in for three well he just

He just played a snort and he’s that’s his ball that’s the shot so which he played on the back in I’m assuming so yeah why not like it no way too more seems to be way too wide he’s coming home but they do come home but not to

Be one I think oh here we go we’re going for it be the one there so 54 the score now after empty one coming back empty one coming back Alex such a busy road here at the behind p 22 Bowling Club if you are in the tanaki region I would

Encourage you to come down and have a look at the bows uh tomorrow is finals day so we have a quarter a semi and a final of the KN Piers the last day that the somerset Nationals will be here in tanaki it’s a free entry the bar is open

The food is good and the bows is great no better place to be on whatever day it is I’ve lost track of the days on our Thursday uh tomorrow finals day here at the P22 Bowling Club two tracks going past in the time that we’ve been watching them and in

That time the Jack has been delivered you can see at the the 2 meter marks at the bottom of your screen so it’s probably I don’t know two and a half 2 ft up from the 2 met Mark and trash leading off on her back end been a good game so far hasn’t

It absolutely been a good quality game really Jenny that’s a good bow Andy you can see there just uh literally on the 2 met Mark Jenny Stockford well well under that one but trush it’s one of the ones that just sort of you know the moment you let it

Go don’t you that it’s uh yeah not quite right and it’s got a fairway to travel too still it’s a bit of loose from the from the ladies bit of for the boys to consolidate so we look at that you’d probably argue that Jenny Stockford played the slightly B lead ball there

Lead balls there because they sort of in line with the Jack and pass it so less room for the jack to move for it to be useful and I’d say measure for shot between Trish crout’s uh short red sticker bowl at 10:00 and Jenny Stockford blue sticker bowl that sits at

At 8 remembering this is the round of the last uh 64 four rounds of play today in post section so a big day for those that that uh get through to the end but the reward is finding itself in a quarterfinal tomorrow well if ini was on that blue

Ball be good good spot anyway next change his head oh my God he had a red head on before he had a red head on before and it was a um it was on fire bowl that he got at Central otago I think and now he’s

Changed it to the m Alber Bing Club I like that I’m a big fan of having little controllables that make no difference but do make a difference like I like to have multiple um uh BS rags in case I lose my rag which does happen at BS uh

And both are metaphorical and the actual weight and you can place it with another EG and then sometimes you feel like that might mean you you play better bow s and so that’s very well noticed there okay I think it’s just there pych people are superstitious and and say

Psychological things to uh to change the they like to think that will change the the way things are going I suppose fair enough so let’s have a look at Nick’s Nick’s hat here the Mount Albert Bowling Club hat mbic I like that looks like McDon looks like McDonald’s had refere it’s the yeah

The golden aches sponsored by [Laughter] McDonald’s the M Bowling Club fascinating Club it’s one of the older uh clubs in Oakland my recollection is that it started off as a at the late 1890s Simon there was a few wealthy gentlemen in ockland who thought it it would be nice to have a

Backyard Bowling Green and M I can’t I can’t uh fault that system so it was the the GX I want GX anyway they’re still the patron so it started off with some bl’s um backyard green and developed into a club and the family is still prominent in Mount Albert so they Remain

The the patron there interesting little story might be 125 I think they’re 125 years or more so been around for a long time you do find the Alex as you see there’s there’s quite a number of um well established 100y old bowling clubs around the country aren’t there it’s

Fantastic I’ll um I’ll tell you a story about the point sh Bowling Club but the conclusion to this end after we watched some bowls as well Simon of course announcing my bias if we excuse the pan Point Shi Bowling Club as the club that

I do play balls out of when I get a chance Alvin here on the back hand it’s a little Speedy but he’s got a couple one of his balls to rest on no he’s not bad actually that’s beautiful bow very good actually well play Bang Bang bang down the

Middle so as you say nothing really to um to do but draw a b handy here for for Nick yeah two or three down we spoke yesterday Simon about that middle four bows being less about attacking the head and more about building it and I think we’ve seen that

Executed really well by both of these peers teams in this game look at that from Nick that’s a lovely second shot good second shot y That’s The Story Alex isn’t if you can’t get the shot you get the second shot and cut the uh cut your odds down of of of dropping a

Number absolutely and patience is a a lot of it too in this game don’t need to be uh scoring big numbers every end it’s just about taking your time trash group making her way down what do you think backand or forehand here for Trish yeah I feel I’m going to go

Forhead it’s cheating it’s like the old days of it’s like the old days of radio when the ring STW Scott would call the bow look about 3 m out to say how close they were so viewer didn’t know any different so it was fantastic great

Calling St Scott was a a legend of the early days of BS when we had it on the radio was fantastic for the for the industry and um was was awesome but um yeah very cunning you can’t physically see what’s going on one of the B balls commentators

I did still I always enjoyed stew he talked about The Slice of Heaven and the slice of hell and I think that just sums up uh it sums up B so uh absolutely I’ve Frankenstein monstered that into a lot of the commentaries uh that I do because

I think uh I mean it is what it says on the T you they get a slice of heaven or a slice of Hell in this game and this is just a beautiful bowl from Jenny Stockford y good shot very good shot so got to got to be back to the

Back a now surely just going to be trying to draw draw that ball draw that ball through the head or thought very hard to get the on the on the forehand to get a get a result I would think so yep just you know you draw you sit sit

The sit the ball through or you just draw basically just draw you’re only going to move that ball the blue ball like a foot Bob and and you sit for two so B bit of weight up here if it holds it could get a result taken a coat of paint off the

Jack there well could have that could have gone terribly ugly to be fair if she nicked Nick the jack to to the right as we see there’re only blue balls on that side of the head so she probably she missed all together probably thinking turn yeah yeah here we go now Jenny Stockford

Ball under the head I think she gets a bit of a sneaky little flick at the front no one shot it’s a strange game isn’t it because when she was under huge pressure she nailed that and when she was under less pressure short and nrow

Anyway I was going to tell you about the the point Chev Bowling Club Simon so that’s not always been the name of the Point chaler Bowling Club it was known for a very long time as the hel Burton Johnston uh Club because that is the man

Who started it it’s a sports trust for three uh Sports uh croquet tennis and bows and it was known as the Helton Johnston club and if any of our viewers follow uh women’s domestic Cricket you’ll recognize that name because it is the silver plate that they played for

And in the 30s hel Burton who had a nephew who shared his name wanted to be remembered and he bought a shipment of silver trophies and trays and donated them to a variety of different uh uh sporting organizations and asked that they be competed for in his name in an

Effort uh to be remembered so the club May no longer bear his name but there are still a lot of trophies out there played for that do and the gate outside the Bowling Club uh still has the HB HJ BC out the out the back of the Bowling Club for H Burton Johnston

Bowling Club so still remembered and the man who started uh the point Chev bows club and that’s is your history lesson for today thank you Alex I was pretty average history at school so that’s very good I need to know some any good facts fact any facts or good facts um and

Thank goodness just be honest that’s a fair mouthful to say if you you come from the h v you two little little quicker but um you’re good to see in those days wouldn’t it do uh the looking after the local sporting bodies which which is great yeah sport is great yeah

Absolutely any sports really happy to have been effors a lot of the clubs we have today of all sports uh can lo back into their past and and be grateful to uh some very kind and generous people who often literally donated their own property uh for the benefit of their

Communities grass this one that we have seen a l lot come back from here so this is uh not too bad trishes uh likes it good enough so again these leads fear fear battle next to the one with the ball past the head I suppose so maybe jinny on the back end I

Don’t know what what hand would you play I think you got to be back in of um Elvin the up shot is just an awkward spot isn’t it really it’s just low enough to be nuisance um you know the tempts to to ignore it but I mean

They’re like magnets AR they the short balls you know you can have a bow 3 minutes up the rank and you you leader go TR go around that one or what no no change your hand no no do that and they’ll hit it nine times out of 10 Yeah

Just they just seem mean so safer than sorry um’s not going to hit that nearly and look this is she’s basically playing the twos bow so it doesn’t matter which she doesn’t have to be um getting the shot if as long as he it’s a position ball for um with these next

Four to to build the head for for the last two bows played by um played by Nick from you’re good think she going to she sneak around elb nice a lovely ball is it going to sit down beautiful shot no Ball’s past the head yet so Jenny you wouldn’t be

Surprised if she stuck on the back hand and went a couple of meters past to then give nikit no she’s going to play aggressive now yep no no just draw so she’s um it’s it’s basically ignoring that ball that’s in in in the running if you like yeah I don’t mind that definitely

Under though probably wish she wants to in a little shy so he won’t be happy with that Jenny should be want to get a ball pass here with the next one if I was to try and read do mind I think she was probably expecting to be asked to

Stay on the back end and just go a me or two heavier and then switch with her third and fourth so I think one of those times where you’re not expecting to play a particular ball and you just don’t get yourself into that uh the right head

Space to play it well yep you mind TS doing one thing and then you can ask do something else oh okay harder than it sounds isn’t it Simon to switch off and just think about the way White and the green because it’s so easy to think about uh what you think

You should be playing and the weight and the green and and then they tell you to play something else and it’s like it’s a poor ball for well it might be playing on a mind Alex maybe the fact that she she’s thinking maybe okay I

Need to be over the here this this hand and she’s been asked to play something else so um and and it look could be fair hard overall um the other person the other end isn’t it really you’re trying to um as a team gel well enough to to do what the others

Asking you to do so exactly you’d almost want to be more aggressive here because if you miss you need to be past the head here if you’re Jenny St absolutely y I agree she’s probably got to be under her ball I I think you’re right Alex under her bow

And being sort of a meter through rather than rather than trying to D draw very close here definitely best effort and and she gets past that ball she’s made it in second shot she’ll be happy with that yep yep you just drop a one here and you’re looking Jenny

You’ll be pleased it’s good fishing to be honest yep absolutely uh beautiful day here at the pat 2u Bowling Club and the oh that’s great timing and the son out so we’ll just watch this uh this bow here you can see on your screen where did it

Go know I think elvin’s feet there Trish just walking past it now the very back one there we go so um we’ve got Nick with a foot in both camps with his um M Albert and in his point sh and we got Trish with biren

Head Pants and mount head and top so we got all bases covered that’s pretty good it works and uh it is sunny and with the Sun comes the need for sun protection and our cameraman there who’s on your screen Max has got some spams which uh apparently what do they

Do they stop sunburn it’s the UV protection situation and if you’re thinking to yourself well I get sunburned easily sparms might be the solution for you and you can find them on the bows New Zealand uh shop and find some spams uh for your your bowling it just avoids the Sunburn and they’re

Quite comfortable I’ve been told Thanks Max for modeling those Nick bit bit of aggression from uh from Nick there interesting dangerous dangerous I would suggest Elvin on the back and that one came out very smoothly doesn’t want to neck that in doesn’t want to neck that in it’s an edge no no

Damage I think these balls right in the line one in his eye for that shot she’s asking Nick to play what have thought Alex what do you think danger y if you play you’re playing with weight to to Su when you’re you’re not uh not got a huge amount of balls around

The here that’s uh seems seems to be playing white again is he needs it to hold he’s very close here if he gets it square it’s brilliant really that’s absolutely beautiful ball and we’ll see if we can get a replay from The Players Point of View there Jenny Stockford walking directly in

Front of the camera at the moment that we wanted to see the ball but it’s okay CU we’ve got another camera pointed at it so we’ll watch a replay beautiful little Cannon shop there from Nick and Elvin looking for the Jack he’s close here team look at this look at this Square

Well the probably two shots anyway one one one Alvin’s ball must have gone too far to the left as we look at it but uh good shot what a beautiful two down to one UPS good so we’ll watch those two balls in a row actually both from the same The

Players Point of View see what they saw two absolute stunners there from Nick Thompson and then Elvin gner here’s Nick B Square onto Jenny’s little Cannon really well played and Elvin Gardner for the Jack and watch is Collision bow it’s Collision bow sort of turned away quite dramatically two lovely bowls there what

A great game this has been Simon absolutely 65 after nine it’s a on the after eight in it’s really good like it’s uh uh very much two and thr you couldn’t probably pick a winner at the moment shorter in again I think it’s good they they’ve avoiding the the longer end going this

Way good that’s when they’ve U they’ve all had a bit of issues haven’t they with the with the um just overplaying a little longer into you Peter Thorne made a good point in commentary uh on day one one or two of the fours he was talking about and he’s right if you you

Think about where most heads are uh where the mat is so you see there sort of at the 3/4 Mark and that’s where all the bows are putting it’s where all the players stand and often you find on a green that 3/4 length where the players have been stomping around the Green’s

Going to be more compressed so often bows tend to run on a little bit more in that area Simon just go a little bit quicker through yep yep as they was saying the other day we said about um how they change the direction of the of the balls the the

Way that the the green running um does make a difference Jenny on here forehand she’s got the weight right it’s very close quite damn it just underneath the line match down the Eagles blazing on the back and the Pirates Elvin on the forehand now fear line nice up for nice set up with

Nice with the first two balls from Tran she one one right on it one behind so yeah very good if you look at the point Chef shirt uh Simon by the right arm and only I only recently realized it’s a sword uh on the point Shi shirt okay I

Don’t know what I thought it was before but it is a sword I had to go with the pirate theme been eight years Alex I think I thought it was just a nice like panel on the shirt or something well it is a nice panel to be fair but obviously has some

Symbolic the big white sword it does tend to now you see it doesn’t tend to stick out as a sword doesn’t it really yeah yeah but if you weren’t looking for it as a sword maybe not I can see that reminds me of the beer and the toon logo uh

Simon there is a beer in the to yeah B A and the next time you get a bar to and have a look at it look at the mountain and it’s actually there’s a there’s a literal beer in the in the mountain of the Tober

Logo can’t I’m a to man Al I mean actually one person has mentioned me to ask me if you’ve supplied me with plenty of M&M’s couldn’t possibly com it’s negative I got a shrewbury I got a couple of shrew that’s what I got nothing wrong with a good shwy oh a little bit shy that’s a lovely line wasn’t it interesting he developing here it’s been such an even game

65 a couple of niggly balls up the front and if if you’re trying to get to the shot ball for for um the Stockford and in Thompson team not bad here yeah potentially adding to the shelf so up get up yes it’s almost time to be becoming

Harder and harder to get it isn’t it I feel like if you’re going to attack it now might be the hour to be honest next’s got a couple of bows left you could reach right through on the forehand side underneath it we you’ve got the two Beckers balls had

To just a challenging end that’s building one of those ends where you could blink and drop a number J bow third shot there that blue sticker bowl that sits at 1:00 to the Jack Nick put another Bowl just P so they’ve got pretty much all the

Three back ball Ser bit of danger for um the coverage I mean it’s not likely to go bit square but looks with the way where Trish’s bowl is sitting TR just suggesting the uh alvard place as B we’ll just watch it from the The Players Point of View you

Got out of the way that’s good he’s short he’s short there but he’s blocked P draw I think Nick has to attack this you think so there’s that’s that’s tighten up that gabin if he’s got three down you you can pound through there and get a rid of a couple

Anyway inside out on the back end Jenny’s asking for well you could just get the jack on the forehand certainly from here it looks like you got a chance for kill don’t you yeah wind up on the forehand underneath that short ball and try and kill it or

You could play the back hand side with less weight go inside out off elvin’s bow cuz it is a bow shy of the of the Jack looks like he’s lying up on the back end here Simon well he must be going quick then if he going back in surely no Okay

Negative well no he’s just sort of a playing a sort of a could get lucky could get lucky fiddly weight he might get lucky with a fiddly weight he’s got very oh he’s got very lucky it’s uh heartbreaking for the gardener crw team and they’re smiling but um inside

They’re probably not but yes yeah you heard there in the ambient mics um Nick just turned back to Elvin and said sorry and that’s good sportsmanship really we acknowledge when it’s a bowl that wasn’t planned you never upset you know it’s never you’re not going to give the shots

Back it’s nice that it’s happened but you you acknowledge if you’ve missed the intended target and got a good result Y and the head still favors Elvin and Trish to be fair it’s very lonely red sticker ball only danger of course is if you do get onto the Jack and your trush

You might pop it back to those blue sticker balls at the back of the head that’s right so being the shot ball being in front of the kitty um does mean well the Jack as we call it probably the kitty the jack it means that uh if he

Does come slicing off the shot ball and get onto the Jack it’s only go backward and there there’s a lot more blue sticker balls behind than there is um red sticker if you see she’s playing that tight line thank you Elin here we go got a good result well interesting

She’s got the result for one maybe two two shots who there’s a good uh good shot for uh for Jenny there planting through that that flat blue bow peel those two balls out red balls out and sit with two or three Alex very much so oh she’s running at the hole could get

Inside out oh my God she’s she’s got a chance again here for getting a result again oh they’ve got two in in a row they’ve got uh okay so she’s got to refocus and try and uh put the other another another lucky one out of the head and trying to um rectify the

Situation we taking she’s attacking it here look at this here from Tres cre she’s got the Jack beautiful ball she needs it ditching it does yeah lovely shot so Jenny Stockford with a bit of room to draw the shot sorry team good ball there it be

Enough we just uh we’ll watch a few of the highlights from that that uh last end there was three or four really impressive ball so just uh check this out so we had this is the slice well impressive good bowls to watch a slice of Good Fortune there from R

Bowling and that good shot Jenny Stockford here big inside out onto the shot Pole to pop the Jack back and then finally this one here from TR tro got the Jack Square watch your Collision ball so Collision goal got got bogged on knck knck ball went into the

Ditch and then Janny drew the shot so some lovely uh lovely shot play on that end Jack has been delivered in the first ball is uh making its way up the rank and you could have he in your ambient Mike’s there a toucher from Nick Thompson

Oh the truck’s gone past 5 Second too late for you Al I tried you can hear it it sounds like thunder doesn’t it yes does indeed free start yep so we’re getting to the nitty side of the uh State of Affairs here uh ad plat 65 nothing in it just like my bank

Balance I got so carried away with the uh the balls the scores actually six a piece and we’ve played uh n and this is the 10th one so even less in it than what we just stated Simon that’s so really enjoyable game to watch it’s been a good standard Alex isn’t it

It’s been pretty good standard as you expect from from teams that are second second game in from Depo section absolutely yeah it’s going a little bit quicker each maybe I just heard it and the mic heard the th there always disappointing thud to hear to be fair yes

Cuz it’s one of those 2 m 2 m length uh heads again Jenny Stockford so where’s the bows New Zealand um television Road show off to next after the national championships finish Alex uh the enter is the next one uh and the inter Center is in Wellington so looking forward to that so

We get a little break and then something else and then it’s something else and then Champa Champs etc etc so still plenty of bows uh to be broadcast like I’ve said a few times very satisfied to have it broadcast live on skyport so the interc is on will be on

Sky sport as well or not I will confirm that it sort of goes event event by event we’ve been pleased to have the Nationals and the trans Tasman on Sky what a great shot that was but by Trish literal T coming home nicely little fether oh still there the ball’s level had a

Couple of I they’ve been playing well niok and Jenny but have had some ideal results with the way the bows have sat sometimes on occasion yes the we feathers the we sits in the last couple end are certainly certainly uh um going that to to Junior

Nicks side but um swings around outs as they say can’t try there have been balls that have been in the area mate draw another one another one on the head there it looks like Jenny Stockford bowl is holding the shot that’s level with the the Jack and they are GTRs Trish balls but

Looks what too Jenny trying to place another ball close could use this Try tired of this last one some people uh looking over the fence now too which as we’ve seen for the entire eight days at the pat tutu Bowling Club good to have spectators Jenny Stockford here looking for another ball very close you’d almost think you’d

Have to come back in would you now Alex you’ve got got a ball pass the head and that yeah’s telling you no point in pushing up a ball all of the oppositions I let it go very smoothly and she’s close here Simon if she’s got the running not bowling amongst those three

Blue ones so not the worst decisions decisions Nick’s probably got to he’s got to probably bite the bullet and come the back in as well doesn’t he I mean he’s got a ball pass the it on the SL to the right he’s got to get a dead perfect

On the forehand to get round Jenny short short ball and another ball on the head okay all right then is that the cat making your lunch in the background sounds like it hopefully does indeed been great catering here at the pat Bowling Club oh neck neck neck

Neck oh he would let that go no it was on that tight line and then you go so chances here for Elvin kicks it away pretty good looks like he’s on a tight line to me but it may hold Simon it’s trying to hold it’s trying to hold it was

Within a couple of inches of being a really good result there and Nick’s going to persist with the forehand draw Simon in this hard hard shot hard shot Alex I think it’s a probably the harder shot to play than the one than the one on the back end but anyway how’s the

Weight they’re old the balls they turn back in oh good try so here is a chance for Elvin Gardner they’ve got second shot on the back end let it go smoothly he’s close here oh close to the jet he got the Jack out to the side oh that’s a slice of

Hell can see blue sticker balls everywhere and I’ll update uh viewers on what that was in second just waiting for the score to be updated but Elvin in the area slice the Jack to the side be very disappointed with that result yes so the they run as as the Rob

The green the last couple of over there Alex they’ everything they seem to tried has gone p and ni and Genies are going okay so as you said earlier you just have to when you’re in that space just think of swings are roundabouts my turn’s coming

Y and it was a three there so 96 the score as we find ourselves on the 11th end of 14 got a bad slice of hell that one Alex wasn’t it yeah certainly was Dro three certainly was from a well played bow too really it was right in the area within a few

Inches of it being about right and it just uh didn’t work for him to trash on the forand now see this ball make it way into it’s way into the head Jenny Stockford steering this bow down balls balls over the here and as we saw from last end it’s um they they the

Ones that counted not what was after but playy good one got the shot so holding one Trish and you do want to when you drop a three particularly disappointing three Alvin and Trish were thinking look we don’t need to score multiple on this end but if we can just score on this end

That’s a win some of the uh Spectators for today looking on someone watching the live streaming on their phone that’s good stuff nice to see the support fella kieren fear there I can see fella the B Zealand president with his arms crossed and the rire Alex is it no no they just

Watch your honorous watch your honorous that’s a good word thank you know for I did a degree in Communications really helps obviously didn’t do a degree in English and Nick Thompson there drawing very good shot B hear the hear the word we all said it and and worse to be fair we

Have yes mostly under a breath hopefully ideally not on a live streaming mic or a br broadcast Mike no not ideal no correct correct there we go Nick willing this ball back in perfect weight not much for to uh to correct here not too bad these first one so the Optima will break

Let’s just we it breaks in time no it didn’t soy smooth delivery from Nick yeah it has everything right coming well again he’s just got a Nick and saw that one p the pan did it well good shot and the ball was quite good too I

Was very impressed with the pan uh mhm Simon looks a little high doesn’t he with it white I think yeah just needs coming now break back here comes wow going to land it yeah lovely B good shot whether it be second or first here good shot jny indicating they’re holding the

Shot so neck will be have his eyes firmly set on drawing onto that last bowl of Elvin and sitting down if he can so he wants to two and he may have overplayed it needs it to break back into the head just the line really wasn’t at Simon it’s right in the

Area yeah we just same idea as last one just moves at foot be be a great shot not bad look at this he going to get there is he going to get there yes he is it’s a lovely ball shot over exactly what they’d want to do after the previous

End but again you see the you see the um the worth of the back balls um early in the head Alex you’ve got jinny with their two balls like a meter and a half pass the head so um even for Genny to play too she can sit either those white

Balls the Jack um and and bring the bring the Jack about 2 m me and a half 2 m she’s uh she’s good yeah just a smart way to to to miss on the with the first two balls ideally you’d want to have that score pressure on from the

Beginning Jenny Stockford is not sure if she’s got the weight just just under yeah if it would have moved a bit but that one well not quite so I think the correction for Jenny’s white rather than green isn’t it you keep that same line and just add a me yep it’d be

Fine interesting that tras is playing the forehand here well here’s the thing I suppose she’s she’s getting another bow not in the way specifically but trying to door to the H she going to probably end up in a bit of a what’s we looking for a niggly home for Jenny really yeah

Yeah just one in the eye Just One of the eyes all sometimes is enough to sen you wide which is done that appears to be a little bit too wi for Virginia I think that uh you get in your mind’s eye that that bowls okay

I got to be round that make sure I’m around that make sure I’m around that and yeah you are pretty good reasonably good weight too didn’t you really yes an opportunity for a bonus bow here from Trish would you play it on your forehand or your backand

I think more backhanded I mean as Alex as Alex as um Elvin saying that’s you know okay play n in the all you should just be thinking oh miss oh miss narrow sort of on the tital line here if you wi it it’s not going to be a happy

Day she’s got the weight right I think this is the correct green very close here from from Trish CR that’s a lovely Bonus Ball well played very good shot yeah well played should be three there so that bounced immediately back nine a piece now as we enter the 12th end of

14 great game of bows uh to be commentating on in this round of 64 match in the post section of the 2024 sumers set mix appears see the p 22 Bowling Club one of three greens here in play Alex we didn’t go to the uh the

Truck n tired of looking at the truck I thought we’d look at the uh at the green instead everyone knows what a logging track looks like how we sh it to them enough and they should know what they’re sound like yes yeah a bit of a longer longer length in this

Way for the uh for the teams face that lovely weight big breath from Nick there on his back hand he will be down to the nitty-gritty ends now with three ends to go they they they’ll be well aware that going to drop a shot make sure it’s a small number it’s

Not drop a big so he stayed on the paddock there Nick Thompson B will come into line you can see it yeah well played very good shot yep hold on Elin Al bit more promise as the sun comes out from behind a cloud wow goodness bursting inter view the sun

Wasn’t it was just excited for the I think it was excited for the bow I think that’s what happened beautifully timed the a about what a lovely shot that was from Ni Thompson that man obviously listening to the the commentary uh Simon and watching the balls nice to have people tuning in you

Think yep okay very confident very we’ll see this bow of Trish CRS on the forehand good B so Jin’s job here Simon again isn’t necessarily to draw extra shots you look at the head Nick’s got the one blue sticker ball jinny would be happy to finish on either hand a couple of feet

Past wouldn’t she absolutely Jenny B you can see there enter onto your screen yeah about there that’s a really good place to start look it really is I mean sometimes when you’re trying to play a ball over the head you don’t want to try and play

Too pretty you don’t want to be you an exact ball um especially you’re two and a fours you need to be if you ask for a back ball doesn’t matter how far back you go to back ball you get you get past the head you try and play a ball too pretty you

Tend up tend to be short or or not where you you wanted to be Jenny is going to play her back end again I think here and just take a little bit of weight off the first one lovely Line This is a good ball here from Jenny Stockford go she sees

Oh the reason she’s not pleased is that from the players end at some point that’s going to look like a nice little group of bowls to play through potentially not yet of course not yet but uh certainly by the time we get near the very end of

This it’ll be very tempting to have a nible on the back end I think for Alvin and Trish unless Trish able here the waight she might be oh what a ball oh she just set out that’s a good shot what’s the best shot on now for Jinx down the back

End you’d think well no she’s next change of the forand been quite proactive haven’t they with Jenny’s balls it’s been less about position sometimes and more about trying to execute some shot play if she’s got the weight she’ll be close here she needs it to hold great

Try well there’s no harm again no harm again with with Trish down the for again as he’s just saying there indicating we’ve got balls past the head so you can draw confidently to the to the uh to the Jack so on the forehand we can’t really see it we try from this

Camera angle so just watch on your screen from the right of your screen we should see the the bow oh just uh finishing well past not the end of the world there from Trish cre no Jenny Stockford being asked to play the same bow again well here had a few end Alex where

The Jack has gone back um not specifically trying to get the Jack back but the Jack has been moved backwards so oh what a ball the back balls good ball good ball prob made two out of it possibly was it front ball maybe I’m not sure we’ll call it one and

A half two or three maybe well she’s got her own ball in the running isn’t she that that ball as she puts her foot on that ball she’s got her own ball in the running um there is only one ball p ahe as you can see well one

Ball to the far right which every just pointed out yeah so you got blue sticker balls say Jenny’s holding two looking to miss on The Wider side of your Alum because next Bowl there’s no future bogging onto next bowl at 12:00 can afford to be arriving though

Because as you said Trish’s Bow’s shy of the Jack the one that sits at 10:00 to the Jack as we see it Elvin looking at big weight Square through that to split them both off that’ be cool you could go through with your Collision bowl that

You’ like that Alex yeah on the forehand through Nicks ball Nicks ball goes Jenny’s ball goes Nicks ball goes uh in the 7:00 Direction and gets rid of Jenny’s other bow the Collision ball could follow through onto the Jack Square be interesting it’ll be interesting Trish might have overruled

There yeah but I I like I like Al’s thinking there’s a good good bunch of bows to be to be um playing through and not many bad results can happen to be fair so I think the word descrip part of Val maybe Alex but uh he’s on a fair line isn’t he he’s

Very close got the Jack out the side how far did it go it’s in TR is in yeah it’s be couple I think there’s the another white bowl of Alvin out that side of the head maybe or maybe that ball maybe two just so that’s a great shot there from

Elvin G we’ll get a replay that at the completion of this in but trailing the Jack back following it through played it with beautiful weight right so um they’re just checking the ball to see if it’s out or not and it’s going to get removed so that’s no longer in next

Line play on this backand did just notice the um the scoreboard the physical scoreboard reads 89 not n a piece so we’ve amended it accordingly but we’ll get a a closeup at the conclusion the end to see where we went wrong n’s back hand looks weighty doesn’t it look at

This through the Jack through the Jack unless he gets Jack oh he might have just Mr Jack or needed a feather I thought he had it for a second instead it’s going to be a chance to add a bit more pressure here for Elvin

Almost had do we go over the mat of the um the camera yeah coming up nicely surely I will see if it’s in the uh that looks to be a bit further in than um the one that Tres was out I I would have thought Alex but who

Knows might be a uh might be an ire get the I’m not going you can get the ire the end can’t me Alex check if it’s in or out so you can so for those the uninitiated um players out people out there um there the confines of the rink is designated by

The p and um a bowl has to be have some part of it touching within of the rink to be ball H the the has has the the mirror there he looks down the mirror line to Pig at the other end if he he

Can if you can see the any part of the ball within that then the bow is is live yes some part of the ball’s got to be touching the jet touching the line how he says it’s out great job there from uh Steve sergeant and uh run some repeat from

NE so actually got a crucial call for out Alex cuz it was actually probably inne of the drawer wasn’t it really so it does um leave the Line open for him stalking it down doesn’t like it it’s not a sign of looks Le get some to result here definitely two anyway

Now drop to two so we’ll just get a closeup on the scoreboard and see uh who got what yeah good boy Max just uh wait for Jenny to uh do that so it’ll be 109 the score after 12 in so this is the penultimate end we’re on

Now just wait a minute and then just uh see who’s what cuz we thought it was all square for a little bit we did for some reason Jenny literally standing directly in front of the scoreboard it’s like she can hear me now we should be on here we go so oh

Actually we should probably wait until we see the ball just got a bit excitable so Trish has played a good uh a good bow there and this is the story of the game so it was a two not a three they did turn over nine originally so it’s

Was two not a three to make it 8 n right I looked out the window and it was absolutely nine a piece so that’s why I put it up but obviously that was just a uh uh a very hopeful extra shot so this this would be the pin Al

End Alex yes that is correct oh snuck of the Jack this to come back one the difference it’s been close all the way would be unsurprised if we saw 15 ends played in this match as Simon is how evenly it’s it’s been poised it wouldn’t be shocking if there was an extra

End no it’s been um I think the most the biggest G was three preps during the games maybe yeah I can’t think of a a larger Gap than than three shots lots of good shot play Alvin Gard on the four whoever wins the game will again

Will have had um two tough games so it’s it’s St and good Steed As you move forward in the competition gets the the the nitty-gritty if you like oh look at that very good job yeah it’s quite nice to play some tough games along the way isn’t it Simon because then you know

You’re sort of up for instead of just uh having games they’re not easy games having games that perhaps go your way beautiful delivery there from Nick Thompson on the back end it should be close maybe slightly under knowing his balls tuned more than most yeah was perfect weight Elvin staying on the

Forehand oh pulled up so that uh essentially you’ve added nothing to the heads not a free hit for Nick but he’ll be pleased that he is allowed to play the same shot again easier to make a correction when the head hasn’t changed looks b line for his bowl I

Think Alex but uh dep me see how the weight is might to put a bit of weight put of both on here turns a little bit it’s good you can see there from the point of view just 12:00 to the Jack and good decision for Melvin just to come back to the back

In even if gets next to line here be a good ball yeah it’s what we’re talking about you’re changing you always try and not give your opposition more than one go at the same head uh because it just feels like then there’s no you can just make your Corrections NE with his third

Ball if he’s got a bit of weit on it it should hold looks like it might be a little bit short up and over again probably yeah probably white was not bad was Alex was it just uh just smudging that grass yeah having Miss I don’t think I’ll be afraid

Yeah I don’t think I’ll be afraid with Val going St the back in would you even drawing in this line yeah I wouldn’t mind to give Nick four goes at exactly the same bow to be honest I think that’s um he’s too good uh to not get it at one

Of the at one of the attempts let ball here from The Players Point of View very close that’s I love it look at that from The Players Point of View it’s absolutely beautiful and the um one of the good things is even going through elvin’s ball at the short one the plant

Might go clean past and not touch a thing so we’re going to see aggression from uh from Nick this will be his first big waited shot and he’s probably got one ball the back ball I think ball underneath the line and feeling like a massive end here

For Elvin and Trish they haven’t scored a multiple really all the way through and now we’re in a space where they’re holding first second and third shot I actually don’t think um I don’t think the shot ball moves Simon you see elvin’s bow that sits at 12:00 to the

Jacks touching trishes it looks like if you hit that they both just split off and the shot B stay there for one it’s still still an improvement I mean to if we get if if we see the other end view with the camera view from the which of the bows behind

The Jack I don’t think there’s too like a next next ball one the next balls went uh over but was quite narrow so maybe not too many workable balls for for jinny you see he’s got that one ball one ball there and that’s it but there’s no Jack movement that’s going to happen

Cuz you just clear the two off I think that’s almost the best result you could hope for if Jenny has a go at this they’ve got fourth and fifth shot those two balls you can see elvin’s ball on your screen there Nick’s going of pointed it I think

Hit that one they both go clean and then maybe with your last ball you can think of something either that or you you might get lucky might get a follow I get a follow through Al look they’ve had a luck with their follow throughs so far Jenny on the back

End look at this she’s close here Jenny Stockford they both go clean Yeah clean as a whistle good shot it’s nice to be right Simon well well happens to everyone once in a while for us I suppose they say a broken clock is right twice a day and I

Hope to be right more than twice a day so I’m not called a broken clock but good shot there from Jenny Stockford removing the two and if the sets up a split there’s no reason why she wouldn’t go again it’s a good Ball but she has to

Be careful here does want to move the front ball out of the way split on the forehand though can’t put on the back so this could go from being a very good in for Elvin and uh Trish have been a very good in for jny oh play the back

End Al I don’t know why but one maybe just felt more confident with your back end Runner yep look at there was a changeable in changeable end wasn’t Alex unbelievable to be fair yeah just dropping a one Bri look who Elvin and Elvin and Trish could have scored a big number and then

Setting it up with uh with Jenny’s Bowl set up a bowl a bowl to get get a number for um for TR for um for Nick and Jenny so yeah it was sort of uh a roller coaster there but the score now 11-9 and we’ll see we watch a replay of a couple

Of those those last balls play Jenny Stockford uh very effective in the skip position check this out so that was uh Elvin Gardner’s ball here which drew the shot and Jenny then split two of them off it’s lovely ball 119 the score so I think uh I’m going to call an extra

End two’s not beyond the Realms of possibility I’ll go with the Front Runners Alex I I’ll go I won’t sit on the fence I’ll go with the Front Runners no fair enough I normally back the underdog Al too but you know two ups neck oh look at that neck last in

Last in last in drags a jack 2 m for shot beautiful oh you can see him shaking the I was just trying to draw the shot yeah anyway if you happy got a chance as they say say l Elvin on the forehand he needs needs it to hold he

Needs the white gets all gets enough so he’s touched the jet which means OB if he don’t don’t think he’s gone in the ditch but yes and Nick on the backend side now steering his ball down and we’ll see it enter the shot shortly that’s two really good bows

There well one really good bow from Nick Thompson and the other one was very effective but to back it up with that second shot was was nicely played absolutely the extra end is on at the moment trly is can see the Bri ainson amongst others there Logan Clark on the left

A small crowd does gather here at the pat tutu bows Club you’ll see uh Trisha’s Ball come onto screen look at this you know I think Nick B just sat down e it did it did just sit down would she missed would she have missed it regardless yeah I think she she would

Would have been would have been funny though if she’d down and just miss it by the ball sitting down seen it on occasion hey the ball sit down just before a ball Jenny Stockford steering after this one hey Al isn’t it here’s the winning of the game these these four

Balls for me these ladies see Trish now keeps that same weight she’s got two two good bows waiting on the forehand from The Players Point of View needs it to hold still will be two down yeah right Qui quick oh just into the ditch she’ll be disappointed with that Paul Jenny Stockford

Bit more positive seems to be Al isn’t it this come from the top of your screen Little Feather oh that’s actually an unlucky feather oh she would have been Square through the second shot Jenny desperately will want to add a third shot here careful careful careful wow wow three mes away from being

Disastrous I believeable yep same again better must Elvin saying You must be close must be hey shut all the way check she’s got it Square that’s the winning of the game right there absolutely beautiful bow and what can you do now here if you can get into that Port you’re looking for the

Jack no so the Jack must have stayed up because um Nick saying you’re looking for the jet well you there you see it there a great shot from uh Trish but still not imposs situation here for Nick and J because the jack is still up with they the blue sticker

Balls it’s possible probably to draw the Jack into the ditch on the on the back hand I think exactly he’s on the forand yeah I think um must something about weight maybe too much weight I think you’re right Alex I think the back end would would be the

Shot You’ only going to move the Jack yeah you slightly slightly Jag the Jack about 3 in sideways You’ have that’s your that’s your option for getting getting a second shot I think isn’t it really yeah the only other thing I N there’s nothing else on really no I

Think it it’s got to be for for for Nick it’s got to be better me remembering his ball is the biggest turning ball of before yeah I think you could draw back in on the back to the right right of the screen looking at that he’s only going

To move the Jack like if it rolls into the ditch and rolls into the ditch sideways well maybe four or five Ines be be two wouldn’t it yeah interesting elin’s looking at maybe playing the bowl of Elvin of jny into the ditch which takes away second shot doesn’t it

Just to to say you see it you play it so it’s about he just trying to can one of the balls into the ditch here what was he talking about well I don’t know she she was talking coming underneath well looking at he was looking coming underneath in between the

Two balls of jenies and sitting that ball her ball into the ditch which takes away the the the option of Nick of getting two which is what what’s what was he trying to do interesting on the back hand says it’s too wide and you can see that

Ball there yeah it’s not going to do anything so Nick I think just get drain on the back end here yeah all I can see play with weight you could Cannon a ball out but nothing interesting can happen maybe if you could get to Jenny’s bowl at 12:00 but then Trish’s Bowl’s a

Toucher so you’d Canon you probably can bow into the Jack into the ditch to be honest which is not the ideal scenario yeah they just indicated Trisha’s short ball so Trisha’s ball that sits at 1:00 to the Jack I just saw them point to that you hit that you might be able to

Split two of them off but Trish’s balls are toucher so I don’t I’m not sold there’s a lot of uh future there could get a miracle result didn’t get a miracle result and there we have it congratulations to Elvin Gardner and Trish cruit who successfully made their

Going to watch uh one of the world’s best Bowlers certainly one of New Zealand’s greatest they highly decorated Peter as we’ve got their comma bis but Peter bis MBE who is um just a player that you want to watch wherever you can can even though he’s now in his early

70s he has been since his 30s one of the greatest players around and it’s always a pleasure to watch Peter Bellis who’s of course with uh Rene who um his wife who has just returned from the uh gold medal winning celebrations of winning the fours the somerset fours a couple of

Days ago and up against them too outstanding youngsters aren’t they Alex I don’t think there’s um anyone around BS who hasn’t heard of the opposition for the bellers they are just two stunners and and both of them from this area yes absolutely we’ve got kayin huella and Bri ainson playing against

The two Ballers and it’s just it’s going to be a great game I can’t wait for it John as we see’ there showing the form that she’s shown all week but you’ve got a classic tale of Youth verse experience Peter balis took up the game uh in the

Would have been the late 60s early 70s as a young man which means that he’s been playing at the top level of bows for considerably longer than either kayin or Bri have been upright but just it’s that’s perfect isn’t it it’s an absolute demonstration of what is great about our

Sport and I think too when we we look back and and I recall bis when he turned professional back in the early 80s I think it was and he was only if he was even 30 he was only in his early 30s and was um a lot of people were appalled at

This how can someone that young be playing professional balls and and now as you say so many the two that you’ve mentioned um Atkinson and well uh are both are they in their 30s certainly not Bri but uh to it just yeah yeah so um Bellis really set a standard and and uh

Not that long ago I had a look on your website the BS new zeum web website and saw a replay of the last couple of ends of that fantastic World singles match in 1984 between Bellis and willly wood of Scotland and uh if you haven’t seen it and you’re

Interested in bows or sport of any sort really uh get on the bows New Zealand website and have a look at it um or you’ll find it on the Facebook page it is a stunning display of absolute class from two wonderful players and bis’s you know unbridled Joy at winning that was

Uh something to behold so he’s had his issues over recent years a bit of health issues in that but um even so when you stand up and play against Peter bellish you know it’s not over until that last ball goes down and we see there just an

Indication of how quickly he’s got onto the line here at par 22 oh such a classy uh classy bow and a classy man Peter bis a pleasure to be in this company as we see kin on his back hand here it’s a lovely bow blue sticker bows

Of course you can see on your scoreboard at the top left the other way around actually the blue sticker balls uh will match shortly I was starting to get confused already oh I’m I live a life of confusion so PB here on his forand and of course we haven’t

Mentioned yet John but R Bellis Peter’s wife uh won the New Zealand fours just days ago so in good form and some of her teammates are still in action I know Karen Guilford I think um is uh carrying on in the mixed pier and D rer as well I I believe and I

Wouldn’t be surprised if Linda Ral is is still going that was a very strong combination that won that fours didn’t they play well yeah so here’s Bellis just looking for that little bit of correction you talk about uh Peter’s World Championship or he won three World Championships so the the singles that he

Won yeah and I’m I’m pretty sure his delivery hasn’t changed it looks the same now as it did then John maybe a little less here on top but uh the delivery exactly the same and his demeanor is still the same you know he’s almost a smiling assassin you

Know he constantly Smiles all the way through it and um and then rips into you and doesn’t apologize so that’s what he’s like he’s great great F you look at this here we go that lovely smooth delivery you’re right it hasn’t changed it’s essentially a perfect delivery yeah down Square onto there lovely

Percentage bow there from Peter good shot and he he would have looked at that Rin wouldn’t have said too much to him he would have just known that he either came inside those three balls that are out there on the left now and if he did

So he’d be close to shot or he could promote his own knowledge of the head understanding of it is so important and uh Peter Bellis is one of the best I love to see the quite a lot of people still in the clubhouse they’ve got a great view here of of the

Balls this woman here Brian Atkinson knows all about parat tutu she is the development Player of the Year from last season had a stunning series of successes or high quality results and in fact was in the losing semi-final team one of the losing semi-final teams in the women’s fors as

Well so she’s had her moments here yeah one of the of this is Ren this is close needs to get the right side of it though could be a slice of hell oh yep oh one down a little bit little bit unlucky there from rain and Bri in some very natural delivery

Need a good result here inside out just heard Peter say we’ve got a couple of seconds to this one one we’ve got a couple at the back if you happen to get the Jack so aggression forthcoming that’s a pretty good Line This is a lovely effort here from rain

Bellis Square through the Jack all the way yeah what a beautiful absolutely beautiful bowl that was and what I admired most about that Alex was the weight control that was not you know trying to get it into the ditch or wicking out a bowl or anything it was

Just play it with this weight yeah she played it superbly and trickled it back to about 2 m and it was um one on a measure yeah Peter Peter indicating I saw him twirl his hands around as if he as if he thought it was three

Shots and I think that’s what it was what a bow that was for marine balas to start off with superlative stuff Peter now back and woi where he has a very long history I imagine his name is on honest boards there going back some distance oh yeah he’s I think he’s on

The was up years ago on the Wong anoi Sports Hall of Fame and certainly is in the New Zealand bows um Sports Hall of Fame or bows Hall of Fame uh as we said MBE recognized many years ago too for it’s not just a recent Accolade it’s uh one that occurred back before

The Millennium I think late ’90s he was uh an nbe yes and a life member too of B’s New Zealand and uh he was still playing I think still playing for New Zealand at that stage maybe just out of it and it was uh I think he was the

First uh player who was still winning national titles etc etc uh to be recognized with that honor such as has been has been his contribution the Dury H Bing Club this young man too is um yeah he’s he’s making a big impression doesn’t he he he turned up in

The um Gary Lawson combination I think in the quarterfinals of the fours yes um fing in for an injured player yes filling in for Neville and there’s one uh I think he’s got a banaki gold star off the top of my head I think him and Brier actually will

Be two of the fastest ever gold stars achieved for B tanaki both essentially within a season was a very good golfer and how often do we see golfers come across to Al John and a lot of them come along late in their career their golfing career and say I thought I

Might have go at balls and within six weeks they’re saying I wish I’d come to balls earlier reasonable the good weight from all four of those balls look at over the P22 Bowling Club beautiful conditions we’ve had all week John it’s an eight day event four days

For the fours four days for the Mixed pear and it’s barely rained yeah great timing well quite pleasing because often we uh uh make a habit of accidentally scheduling our national events to coincide exactly with uh Cloud bursts and you get blamed for that too yeah

It’s our fault for the timing yeah yeah we should know when it’s going to rain clean run or as in the case of the trans Tasman you deliberately scheduled that when you knew that it was going to be strong winds and rain and hail yes yeah why not just add some extra

Challenges so Bri on the back end that can’t be far away from a good ball John well she took a a final line and Peter ballasted so and this is an awareness thing isn’t it it’s watching most of the balls in a game you don’t have to watch as Joe Edwards says

Particularly if you’re playing fours or something like that you don’t have to watch every bow and and she even said I I don’t watch every bowl that my opponent plays no matter whether it’s singles or peers um but it is just a of noting a few things isn’t it particularly early

On in the game that’s a nice correction here from Briar ainson she was crossing the center line a little bit early this time she goes SL wi uses one of the Bellis balls and comes in for shot that’s um two maybe three there I think when’s it going to turn this ball of

Rene Bell now when’s it going to turn oh good try not soon enough had won a previous National Title hadn’t she Alex somewhere along the line yes she had and she had been run Runners Up in a New Zealand uh singles I believe I think she’d probably been in three or

Four finals so unsurprising to see her success be successful and was really pleased for Linda Ral too John who’s been so consistent for so many years and has won SilverStar titles but Linda Ralph’s first open national title as it was for Karen Guilford in the fours really uh a comprehensive team effort in

That final wasn’t it just I think I mentioned to you isn’t it funny how sometimes the finals are sort of anticlimactic climactic aren’t they because both the finals were sort of runaway victories when the semis and quarters have been so tight and tense yeah it’s often the way it’s fascinating

If you talk to people about playing any event often the the closest game that you might play on your way to to a win isn’t necessarily found in the final often it may even be your first round of post section just uh the way the way it works

Sometimes and on the crossover those blue stickers bows of kin and Bri it looks like they’re holding 1 two 3 4 three and a half yeah I think so yeah yeah reasonable number there certainly that one to the left one to the left is probably in that’s the back one that

Might be the measure but it’s always difficult to tell I love the viewing area here you can lean over the fence and see everything there’s no high walls you you’re made to feel welcome and often you see cars pull up behind the commentary box here on the yellow lines

And uh and people jump out and piek over the fence for a while and then off they go how classy was that ball lots of options there for him and uh he took took one of those just put your ball in the area and let it do the work

Looking for the rake here kin needs it to hold probably didn’t give it the the weight that he was envisaging I I don’t think the jant no Peter lining up on as if he wants to play the forehand side such a good delivery down to the weight here PB look at this

Oh within a bow and an opportunity here for ball of sitting out that um second shot he had options there didn’t he I thought oh just be careful here you don’t flick the Jack back but no he would be saying oh was never close to that K’s got slightly wider chances chances

Here for a big number off that ball onto the Jack he may have snuck it across for a couple but a little bit unlucky there not to make I can see too conceded all right oh well that was a very good ball lovely shot good to see

Them sharing a smile there see both originally from wongi kin splitting his balls between wongi and tanaki now and three so three a piece after two ends but looks like he’s enjoying watching the balls got a perfect view of this match great stuff yep the scooter up and peer over the fence why

Not matching away on something there so that bowl of Kalin Hellas you’re one down playing The Last Bow and just getting a nice little Fleck moving the Jack across and getting three out of it that’s pretty damn good yeah really it was really classy see BR here right on the

Jack you know when you’re playing a team like the bises have been so good for so long and are still so good you don’t often get those chances so kin would have looked at that and it was a chance for four or five I think and thought I need to take

This opportunity and he he did so Bri here on the forehand for those viewers who have uh just tuned in and you’re wondering what is this game and how do you play at the 242 mixp uh stay with us for about 6 minutes and at the completion of this end uh We’ve

Developed some great Graphics John to try and explain how it works I know you love that word it’s your favorite word graphic so we’ll see we’ll see what we can manage close here oh beautiful she and such a good touch isch from R Val yeah so this is uh the last

32 that we’re into at the moment and there was a big buy early this morning a lot of the teams had buy first thing so there’s a bit of catching up to do throughout the day yeah so the easiest way to explain it uh is that we had 80 something I

Think it was 85 qualifiers uh so some of them were playing a round of 128 and some of them had the buy because they uneven number had the buy and got it through to the look at this he’s got it Square that’s a beautiful ball this is turning into a be game no

Surprises some had the buy through to the the next round so that happened to be this green at part of 2u and so they’re only playing three games of post section we’ll watch this ball coming from the left of your screen look at this from Peter Bellis on the

Left of your screen oh he just made it there it is and we’ll see if we can get a better angle there we are sorry about that team it’s drawing the shot John so a lot of the uh the big names are still in the competition uh including the defending

Champions from last year in central otago Dean gilan and Lisa white are there and I just cast my eyes over the results as they came in earlier today and you can find all those results on the bows New Zealand website you can catch up and see oh how could what oh perfect

Ball that’s a really good boat I have to Kin trout it back just to go bang bang how many times will he have done that in his career kayn hulia now looking to rest Square through the ball over the Jack wow he’s found the Gap there but he

Stayed up on the paddock so that’s a helpful ball needs it to hold needs it to hold half half a ball wide narrow wasn’t he just didn’t quite get it Brian has a look down to that one to the right PR saying we just one down now and

Uh kaln will continue to to get the rake out on the back and he’s very close here John B or Jack bow or Jack oh how did you find the Gap look he’s played the same Bowl twice look at that killer say all good usually just go Peter likes this

One hit the grimas on yeah I think Bellis recognizing that those two balls that Kalin has put through there are quite dangerous for them and he wouldn’t put it past Bri Atkinson to tickle a jack backwards to get three absolutely and I wonder if Peter was actually trying to get around on to

Those certainly put something around a bit further than where he ended up we’ll see what Bri can do with this using the back hand same hand that her partner had used just underneath underplayed there little bit there John I expected to see more weight from br oh

For Peter’s Chang T here and I think that’s directly in response to Bri’s bow dra here you make four he said yeah because that that’s how many seconds they’ve got there when you look at that white bowl is the only blue disc Bowl in view this could be incredible from R

Bellis well it’s only only quite good yeah you know it’s look it’s not what he asked for she missed it by about 6 [Laughter] in because you saw that she was standing up ready to play defensively come around the forehand I think to match those

Balls or she might get it this time oh that other gap where was the G where was The Gap oh B stuff there had kin and Bri be with and but’ and Peter still have had to put the bows on the head and they’ve they’ve done so well here’s a chance for a

Bundle here John here’s a chance for a bundle when’s it turning it’s a chance for a fistful if she gets the Jack any of the Jack only three just take take three instead three on each end yeah there some impressive balls there though you’ve got to admit we’ve seen so

Far after just three ends had nine points scored and it’s 632 the Bellis combination so as Peter starts we’ll just try talk people through how the 242 uh Piers works because it’s sort of it’s newest New Zealand and we don’t play much of it so mix Pier obviously you

Have uh two teams team red and team blue and you can see there there’s player a and player B and what’s unique about this is the sequence in which you play the balls so the first uh in sets the first in player a plays two balls player

E the player B the four and player a the two hence two for two and then everyone stays down the same end so on the next end player B the two player a the four and player B the two so on and so forth until the 14 ends are completed a great

Form of the game isn’t it without doubt and it’s a a great learning you know coaching game too isn’t it where you have an experienced player and a a new player perhaps and it gives the new player a chance to lead and and go right through four balls but

It also gets them to make decisions on the head um it really is becoming more and more popular I must admit and also you know as we’ve seen here as we see right now the the Bellis you know um families get together husbands wives you know brothers sisters Sons you know

Fathers all that sort of thing they well you can’t have a father and a son because it’s mixed but anyway um you know what I mean so you can get a families involved in it it really is become has become very very popular hence the number of entries here for uh

This event in taranaki record numbers well over 200 and attendance which is why we had the 85 qualifiers in that round of 128 and on that note John we’re actually up to the round of 16 here uh so I’ll spend maybe 30 seconds trying to make it make

Sense and then we’ll drop it so we know that tomorrow we have to get down to a quarterfinal because it’s three rounds being played tomorrow so that’s eight teams turns into four turns into two so this scen here is down to the round of 16 so this is the last game that’ll be

Played on the screen because when it’s finished are they’re down to the round of quarterfinals I can tell you because it’s in front of me that uh it’s the Ballers uh versus ainson and Julia that we see here uh also Elvin Gardner and Trish crout attacking on Steven Bryan

And Karen Guilford who Eagle viewers will remember has won the fours as well John Garett and Trish Howard playing hulahand and Charlene puaka Becket H Steve Toms and K playing Bob Sanders and Julie Alexander and the critchlow’s Kenny and Steve taking on Chen Nord and

Linda Bennett are all in the last 16 now everyone else has had to play or will have to play uh an extra game so there’s uh four rounds for everyone else today but these uh lucky well lucky to depending on your perspective I suppose these players these teams are got the

Buy through that first round so we’re down to the round of 16 here and I hope that that made sense it’s all I’ve got well that made sense to me you mentioned the crito’s um Kenny and and Steve um when I first dabbled in balls back in the late

19 no early 1990s I think it was I I joined at the Kori Club it was just around the Road from where I was living and um a couple of players also joined at about the same time and one of those was Steve crito so we’ve been known each

Other through bowls for that long which is 40 years practically or 30 something years um so it’s always been good to catch up with Steve he’s kept going through all that time I had a fairly decent break when work and family and that sort of thing took over but um yes

Steve very dedicated bowler and has been a president of his at Silver stream along with uh another the other chap who joined with us was a chap by the name of Peter who was um remained very involved with bows as well so sort of one of those things we talk about lots of

Sports but particularly bows you get sort of Lifetime friendships don’t you yeah yeah a special Community I think uh I think the fact that you can continue to participate is what makes a difference cuz yeah the other sports uh that you can play often limited by literally your

Physical ability to do so you just need an injury and as you get older of course the injuries become a bit longer a bit longer lasting so not so good there is uh Bow’s relatively it’s taxing uh but you can still uh participate and still play well

So people tend to stick with bows as a sport and this is a bit taxing too the mix Four mix 242 because you are constantly switching over aren’t you there’s a bit of walking to do yeah there is a bit of walking and you know long days it’s a

Lovely bowl from rain she’s in such good Tates and she very very consistent yeah Bri doesn’t give much away does she when you look at her face when she delivers it’s always is pretty much the same she’ll be might give a wee bit away now no still the same just another

Bowl I don’t play I don’t play those balls often enough to not get excited when I do oh gosh great shot there really good battle so we’ve seen 333 scored and it was looking okay for the uh the Ballers but Bryce just Trail the Jack around the corner to hold

To smooth delivery it’s been good to hear Simon poppleton on the commentary list too um Alex because as you and a lot of people know he’s uh been is a very good bowler you know indoor and outdoor bowls or lawn bowls and uh he’s got great knowledge of the game and in

Fact a couple of times I think carted me through to qualifying for post section in the national fors uh sometimes doing it on his own and my teammates won’t mind me saying that because Poppy just you know was uncanny ability to hold out the big shots when it mattered you had a great

Run didn’t you at the mount mongui National fls yeah yeah that’s right they have made the quarterfinals I think or the last 16 yeah we certainly um I think we we got beaten by Morris Sims twice once in qualifying and uh then lost to him in post section that wasn’t the year he

Went on to win it that was the following year I think but yeah we had a good good team with um Grant Nisbet and um Terry Shaw I think was their combination in Bay of Plenty what’s the talk about where the fours or championships might end up next

Season I know the decision’s probably going to be made soon Alex but have you heard any I I couldn’t possibly comment John but there will be okay some information coming through shortly uh good we hope that people are pleased they should be we’re looking forward to it regardless you know I

Think um I was one of the detractors uh when we initially split the the Nationals was split in half because it used to be quite a long week and there’d be the singles PE and fours played and I thought well bit of tradition but look

We split it in half there’s the North or one Island now gets a fours and a mix piar which is a relatively new event and the other Island gets the singles and the peers and it allows more bows New Zealand members to participate in our open national championships and is that

Not the name of the game so it’s been reflected well uh in the statistics we’ve seen a year- on-year increase for the last four or five years every just gone up and up and up and doesn’t look like it’s uh going to slow down so uh the as it goes just pass the

Check yeah I think um I think that’s worked out I know the word detractors and as you say you had your doubts about it but it’s certainly been I think the right call um and and to have the mixed Pairs and the fours in at the same venue I think that’s been really

Standing because heck of a lot of people have stayed on for the Mixed peers and um and of course most people who play the singles are going to stay on and play the peers they H them in the other Island here it’s worked out well really and

Uh I’m very pleased with the success we’ve had the mixed piar in particular is really nice addition I think to the calendar we’ve had one year coed and two years played so this is the fourth year it’s been available but the third year it’s been run and to see it continue to

Get more popular is satisfying and nice to just to have that option for for bowlers as you say uh to play uh with Partners or people they may otherwise not play with because there are mixed events around in our sport but still not like it’s not a huge amount of mixed

Bowls available to play so it’s a nice thing to have as a national Event John yep I was watching um a couple of the games yesterday with some some friends just briefly and uh watch I mean this end is a prime example of what we were talking about

Gosh these are some of the best in the country they’re playing in the national championships and and look even they don’t get it right every time and it’s something that Bowlers should remember isn’t that you can’t be spot on no one has spot apart from from the best of

Course best of the best but you know most players just can’t be constantly on the jack or On Target it’s just impossible so it’s um heartening to a lot of those people who are sitting there thinking oh I couldn’t play in the Nationals I’m not good enough um just

Keep on watching and particular if you watched over the first couple of days you’d be able to say to yourself I don’t think I’d disgrace myself absolutely the difference I think between uh your Club Bowlers and the real champions is the timing of the bowls John because we can all play a

Good bowl and we can all play Loose Ends uh but the the real champions uh play the Good bowls uh when they’re most required you know your peter Bellis is of the world even if he was playing a poor game I guarantee you he’s won a lot

Of games when he’s not played anywhere near what he would consider to be his best because he’s got timing and they’re just capable of when required uh playing the right shot it’s uncanny y like this beautiful that’s really perfect kin on the back hand here we disappointed he’s falling short

There yeah it’s a scratchy end for the Hella Atkinson combination Bri’s got one just on the ditch lucky it didn’t go into the ditch meanwhile Bellis just will continue to plon them in here he won’t be short but he’ll be effective look oh isn’t that look one

One bowl second bowl half a meter back third ball another half meter back and it’s adding on just a fraction of weight each time each time though giving hella something to sit on but not really look at this he’s going to have to be spot on he’s not far not far away

Might get the shot out of this great try look they’ve been right in the are yet just again let’s see if he can make it four nose pinched up still the teeth showing smiling oh look another one the same spot well that’s pretty good isn’t he that’s very

Good she’s saying come on kayin don’t leave it up to me get in there I think got one on the ditch on the right on the lip he’s not going to be short here kin huella on his back and needs to clear his front ball if he gets past his front

Ball he’ll be in the area if he gets past the front what about that one square then no got same Gap isn’t it amazing they’ve kin’s played four balls that have been well played and he’s going to find himself literally four down probably five down because Peter Bellis has another ball to

Play switching to his back hand for this one this has proved to be a bit of a wide draw out there too when he first came down here didn’t quite get it not a mile away though here’s a bit of a breeze and we’ll see the flags a

Little bit later it’s been a constant Breeze at paruta but it’s not a wind it is just a a bit of a breeze yeah it’s uh beautiful weather really no complaints look at that the oh New Zealand Al flag flying in the breeze above the bows pter two2

Flag and uh neither of them looking very tatted they’re both look to have Flags the John on quite nice flag poles yeah they’re certainly blowing from left to right so that would have had an impact on bis’s last ball now Bri looking to cut down the count now the pressure

Really has a chance to get on Just heard Peter Bellis if you didn’t hear him at home say two for sure just uh a ball on your back end so just three three’s fine and any more is a bonus here for ring that’s the further she’s been away this

Entire match and it’s not that far away John yeah oh lovely weight that’s up hear what um Kalin is very little probably two two in a measure hard to get that Jack across to the left doesn’t it yeah draw is safe even if you cut it down to one or two

This is fine see Bri’s first Bowl finish there at 10:00 just out of fo8 this is as much pressure as someone can be under in a game of balls because there’s no easy shot on you can’t hit it have to draw to save and she’s uh on a tight line how’s the weight

How’s the weight inside out hang around might have cut one out they’ve got three John who would be against R Bellis moving this 8 in back for about 20 shots might be slightly exaggerating well five yeah 1 2 3 four five I reckon it’s wor six yep that’s a better line too she

Comes underneath Peter’s ball to the right she’s close a flick off it oh go she’s so good ball that is isn’t it good oh brilliant balls classy stuff there from Marine Bellis two out I don’t think brize might have chopped them out of one or has it kin’s just wanding over to

Have a look now he’s flicked out that one three we’re scoring a multiples here one way and then the other incredible stuff and just our thanks of course go to the Alo gaming trust for their support of this event much appreciated nice to have that assistance see Peter Bellis down measuring

Here three three it is and they’re scoring on Alternate ends the bis is scoring on ends 1 three and five they lead by six to5 oh 9 to5 so I’ve missed my scoring card here it’s been a long week joh AR scoring on Al turn it end yeah that’s Right the jack is going to be placed on the 2 meter Mark so delivered long interesting just to keep an eye on that John to see if there is a a plan a favored length by either of these teams or whether they just deliver the jack to wherever uh feels most

Comfortable Peter may be into the ditch here and I don’t think he does that very often no he probably thinking I can’t remember the last time that’s happened 1993 yeah he was worried about the score on his card that’s the problem the E just updating the scorecard good ball from kayin huella

So 95 we’re playing the sixth end now oh good here’s your correction that Peter would have been looking to make good line oh agonizingly short there I do like the way these players just take off from the mat as soon as theyve delivered the last ball in that

Sequence yeah so just makes for a faster game doesn’t it it’s w down yeah rain Bellis with the balls picker upera I’ve decided as the technical term fantastic have you got one of those John or have you used one of those I haven’t oh they great I have yeah just

Um sometimes in a game someone’s got one and they’ll politely put it under underneath your bowl if you’re bowling you know against them and so you pick it up with that and then put it underneath their next Bowl although I tend to try and be you know make out that I’m

Totally fit and don’t need it and can been down and pick it up myself but that make life easier there are some out there too which some people are looking at now which um are not just a pecker upera but also one that you can lean you know carry your weight on your

Non-bowling arm you know just yes Le forward oh what a ball that was sorry John I was just got a bit carried away that was unbelievably good what a shot y this is a a fantastic game and we’re just seeing beautiful weight for those shots that are those scoring

Shots particularly from Rene Bellis you know we’ve seen two that have been absolutely superb from her and then we see this very good one too from Bri it from Jack was yeah that’s often what we say isn’t it well it was the just uh I’m just looking for a hint in her

Face of nothing there that was good nothing there no the two sorts of Bowlers in the world now there are those who you can tell immediately uh whether they think their bow is good and there are those who just the same all the way through Inside Out Oh I thought she had

That and interesting head that has developed if you if we look at it so the blue sticker bows of Kalin and Bri smattered around the head holding three Peter may look at that little plant now that BR sort of sat in that position you see there at

The top of the head there’s a little split uh by the te Peter may see if rain wants to attack it oh she doesn’t look doesn’t seem very happy with that we’ll see it come through our head in a second look for the plant oh just a bow underneath

Up oh that’s a wind coming through the microphone attached to the camera so that’s a real decent gust came through then not happy with that ball we’ll see this uh Ball come onto your screen shortly the sun’s playing Havoc with our cameras there we go underneath the

Line so I I think Peter here John will play on his forehand and if he’s wide onto the plot he’s fine because those two bows are touching each other and it will be going in an 8:00 Direction which will get the balls and the Jack and if he’s narrow he

Gets rid of two balls he could literally be within 3T on the forehand any way you like and it’s going to be a good result here yeah yeah lots of targets for him he’s doing it on the back hand instead so what do you know well one of

Us has won three World Championships yeah and I’ll give you a spoiler it’s not me how’s the plant how’s the pl is was it working yeah oh went through the Gap nearly oh gosh oh that’s that’s I got nothing still got it can of be on John go

No and kin just uh stacking in the bonus balls now Peter has a decision to make do you attack it or do you try and draw to save perhaps just on the draw I do not know backand again I respect this going for the yep or the Jack and the ditch very close

Here got rid of to them yeah good ball yeah that’s good y so rather a two than a four and that looks to be a two for kin and Bri so we revert to and a bow to come as well so maybe it’s a three well maybe it isn’t a

Three think he’s walking away he walked away early on that one don’t tend to turn your back on them when they’re going to be a scorer two there 79 the score and we’re on the seventh end exciting times and uh just while we’re waiting for the next end to begin

As we’ve been mentioning throughout the last week I just wanted to remind viewers of the existence of a wonderful charity that provides free well-being support to all KES and we know it’s been a challenging in few years and isolation and loneliness can be tough and we all

Have off days but sometimes those off days can snowball into off weeks and we think it’s important to get support So if you or someone you know are struggling we wanted to let you know that free help is available and it is uh available in the through the use of just a thought

Who offer free online courses for depression anxiety insomnia stress and more no weight lists no costs just support that works all from the comfort of home so head to just ath thought.co NZ or Google just ath thought and join the 50,000 KBS already using just ath thought to support their mental

Health so the pattern continues Alex of Bellis scoring on the odd end yeah interesting isn’t it thaton on the even yeah and sometimes games do get into that situation and yet neither team can understand why the skips are at the end of it probably think oh was that the situation

I didn’t realize that we’ll have a look at the card I think that’s one of the things uh and you know the laws of the game State now that uh the skips must keep the card um which I didn’t know for a little while because I was a junior

Baller as but the skip keep the card and I actually think it’s a real positive from the Skip’s point of view because you literally have the card in front of you John and you can see um what’s what you know you can go oh yeah we’re dominating yeah on going in one

Direction or we’ve dropped some numbers etc etc it’s quite good from a tactical point of view I think for the skips to have the the scorecard cross over there one of the loer ends that they’ve played yeah saves the other players having to bother about it yes yeah enough there’s enough to worry

About John as you mentioned this young man already a gold star performer in his short bowling career so highly regarded all round and the uh that very good team of Gary Lawson and Tony Grantham and who was their third player that just escapes me for a moment but

Those three when Jamie Hill that’s right so top-notch combination and they weren’t at all hesitant in calling in Kalin to fill the Gap in the National fours and Brier of course here with um Selena gard and Lisa white Trish crout not far away here Peter Bellis oh just overplayed it

Really so that was poor commentary for me because it was actually quite was actually quite far away just he let it go and looking at the ball intently John so I thought it must be close this one looks a good track coming in oh lovely ball not bad weit either yeah great

Shot feel like there’s more twists and turns to come in this game so Peter on his back end with weight here can get them both oh he’s got the jack into the ditch a ball went with it was that a toucher or not I don’t recall being a

Toucher in the game so far now it’s been lifted out of the ditch we just wait and see so the that was worth two there what a great bow that was just uh I see there’s a blue oh there’s a catcher there right beat that if you Can he’ll love this that sort of challenge that people are bis thrive on and then as Heyday you would not have put it past him drawing it right to the lip and and grabbing the shot off the opposition where’s that going to land he’d like another one see on the crossover

Is’s the man there a smile so we just uh I see the SP coming into here oh just bugging onto that probably a bit short anyway if they’re looking to grab two out of this they’re holding the shot comfortably and the best the baners can do really is to just ensure that they

Are really close with the second shot and to only go down one it’s gone past that one and you see yeah no into the ditch so down one I think is not the end of the world unless uh bri can get second shot and just sitting on the bast bow

And knocking it out would be all right oh there we are almost a grin not bad I that think pretty good there you go that’s two so rain’s played her ball so just uh keep your eyes peeled the Peter Bellis has put the jack in literally the worst

Possible place he could have fought our cameras so just wait and see if the there it is how’s the weight how’s the weight how’s the weight oh it’s into the ditch great effort gee I thought she had that perfectly but a scoring sequence has been broken now as the Hella ainson

Combination grab a two on the seventh end to go to n all so this is a round of 16 match between Ken hella and Brian Atkinson and Peter and Rene Bellis they traded threes early on it was 3 n three all 63 then 65 and then another three made it 95

Peter walking away from that one and disgust how many balls do you think he’s bold in his life when he was professionally playing in Australia it would have been every day of the week wouldn’t it I suppose you could probably work it out be uh well into the six let’s just

Limit it to um we’ll just limit it to competitive balls we won’t count all the practicing balls practices he had I would say a lot yeah um someone could actually work it out for us I think if we say look look out look out look out look oh what a shot oh

Gosh beautiful ball must ask him sometime would you have any idea it’s sort of like asking you know Richard Headley how many Bowl balls did you bowl in cricket your Cricket career well Richard he’d be able to tell you probably if we say it’s 50 years of

Bosss and he went yep 30 weeks of the year and you play 10 games a week say roughly so what’s that 10 time 30 300 time 50 is a lot something thousand I reckon it’ be close to like some ridiculous some we work it out I’ll work it out before the

End of the well I went work it out cuz I have to concentrate on commentary but someone if we work if we just say he played Peter’s probably averaged say 30 weeks a year and at least be a conservative 10 games a week right uh so

10 games a week 30 weeks a year for 50 years and then times that by three for an average number of bowls played uh no you have to times that by say 15 for the number of ends and that by three for the number of bows and he might be somewhere

Now many BS he’s played in his career it’ll be an interesting one to find out if any uh any brain boxes out there can work it out for us uh we only expect an estimate don’t we we don’t expect it to be accurate not like um 483,000 on this the eighth

End 8 of 14 so just gone past the halfway mark this is knockout it’s the mix Pier the somerset Nationals as Bri Atkinson looks to run it would have done so nicely hitting either of those two back ball there two red disc balls there and uh one blue

That’s a pretty good home there I think Alex well I’ve had someone come back already John and I I trust them it’s Lee Cutler who’s made two observations the first observation is correct that as we watch this ball from Bri needs it to hold on and pet have exactly the same smile

When they deliver the ball which is true yep and Lee has informed me that she thinks it’s 1, 170,000 uh balls sounds reasonable we’ll see what else uh it must we could see it like why can’t it be in the in the curriculum as a maths question how many Bowls has

Peter bis played in his career given that he started uh in the early 50 years of balls 30 weeks a year 10 games a week yeah uh 18 ends a game and three bows at end how many does that work out to well we think over a million based on

That estimate and it doesn’t surprise me John yeah yeah supposed to be good talk about the bows now so the red sticker bows of Peter and you can see 1 at 12 and 1 at 6 but I think kin’s blue sticker bow is second shot at 1:00 tight to get at

Very narrow Target as you say and just fellas just stacking up the back really in the belief that maybe will try and rip it all out by hitting the short balls oh he’s not a bile away with this is he might get second shot out of

It yes he does be happy with that one so this uh could be Peter bis’s 1, 170,000 1114th Bow gosh Rin Bellis picks up the Jack and Peter Bellis marks down the score just grins as he looks at it and it is 109 bis leading hella and Atkinson after nine ins after 8 in sorry 10 n when you look out there it seems as

Though we’re at the right at the pointy end of the competition just the two games being played but around the other greens there are matches in progress I think Vogal town is being used today quite good that you know some of those smaller clubs like well it’s locally

Pronounced a walker isn’t it um on the way down the surf Highway yes uh they had matches there yesterday I think in the mixed peers and certainly during the fours so those smaller clubs really convivial and pleasant to be at I can report report viewers that Rene Bellis is human she’s Mr B

Wide and interesting that uh Bri is playing the back end so picking the opposite side of the Ring to what Rene just played yeah I think Rene was playing oh she’s going to change hands because she was playing this hand wasn’t she previously I’m not sure yeah and playing it beautifully too

Lovely effort here from this ball it’s a nice shot well played similar line coming in from Brian ainson great if it here making it away that’s great I think he I think he just said stay on this hand will you so on his backand side here perfect grip back swing follow through foot

Placement there’s a reasonably modeled an entire coaching system off that delivery jint and he’s written a couple of books hasn’t he Peter which you know reinforces a lot of this sort of stuff about consistency and beautiful mental alertness and awareness yeah be that’s great yeah if there’s one bows book that

I would recommend uh to anyone it is B bows with Peter Bellis and Mark deacy I think it’s still in print you can find some copies of it otherwise your your Bowling Club probably has a a copy in the uh you know the bow Club robberies

That we have uh but uh a great book because it talks very little about technique it’s not got much to do with technique and it talks all about uh the mental side of the sport and has some fantastic insights my favorite one as we see Peter just uh indicating

He’s going to play the forand to cover where the Jacks going as Peter in his book talks about how valuable visualization is and it’s essentially a it’s a way of practicing a bow if you visualize it and he said when he won his world championship singles match that’s a

Perfect shot there from Peter that he had visualized it a thousand times when he went running um before he went to bed etc etc had visualized a drive shot to win uh a world final and so when he found himself in a position where there

Was a drive shot on to win in a world final that felt like he had played it a thousand times before because he had visualized it I think that’s a really important lesson for any sparing bowler yeah it is it’s a good read and often when you’re talking

Amongst new ballers they will quote bits of that book or I talk about yes I can’t remember what the characters are you know the bad bad influen yeah yeah yeah I don’t want any rets yeah there rer and Millie KH had name for her one

But I can’t remember what it was I can’t what it was called so yeah just a well worthwhile book if you’re a new new to balls or if you’re interested in reading up on some of the mental skills behind it absolutely fantastic book to read this is a begin developing here

John K they’re still holding second shot there by the looks aren’t they yes to the right yeah it’s about now that you wonder whether Peter would play the backand and P push his own shot ball over a couple of times and that’ be in a position for

Four he might get Ren to do that you never know absolutely oh well yeah look as wait exactly the same four times oh yeah calling for an aggressive shot prior on the forehand we’ll watch this from the players’s point of view no we won’t oh it’s okay it missed anyway so

It’s that a stressful couple of seconds underneath the line on the forehand so there’s no doubt that the Jack would have gone to the right as the left as we look at it and that’s what bis was reading possibly he wanted a couple of his a bit further over I don’t

Know but it’s it could squirt straight out there to where they’ve got another four balls yeah so I wonder what he’ll do here I’m very interested in what he calls green to play are they happy with one I think a little tap to the left take advantage I agree with you John

Play it on the back hand yep that’s the hand she likes yep there we go let it go that’s either either a smile or a gritting of the teeth here Alex oh look at that just a little bit of a a walk that was a gusta wind that got it there

Right let’s watch this ball arrive this could be a big bow for Bri Atkinson oh well there’s a gate there to go through on the forehand now yeah she’ll still play the back one oh she is she is that smile looks on The High Line to

Me so from Bri’s point of view this is what she sees and there’s a ball at the back now it’s going no there’s not if Bri has a quick enough drive maybe the forehand to chip that ball out clean because the jack won’t move if you chip

The ball out you could get the jack on the forehand see kin had his foot on that black ball to the right saying use that so maybe Inside Edge onto the Jack onto the shot let’s see what happens here we go looking at the inside of that ball just to the

Left so they settle for one it was uh an interesting single that the ballast team got there they moved to 11 to nine ahead we’re on the 10th end so nearing the last part of the match now and uh I think if my eyes did not deceive me

That Peter bis may have misdelivered that Jack so it’s been sent back to be redelivered by Kalin who’s throwing a short end P bis on the back hand lovely line that’s where he wanted to Jack this ball on the back hand now so what balls was Peter using can

You tell from there uh ero optimiz are what he what Peter plays with nor yeah my eyesight I just know that that’s what he what he plays with ring plays with some older balls what you mean wooden ones not quite not quite the lignum VTE bows [Laughter]

No only wood that sinks John it’s denser than water that’s what we used to make bows out of yeah fact was a set at where did I play vogle town or was it Fitzroy Vogal town was an old set that had been kindly donated by a past member you know um

Mounted there and these um old wooden balls I I actually scrubbed one up at the I don’t know whether you know I’m a member of the ratti Bing Club told you that yeah yeah so anyway um we had a had a an annual event for our Treasurer who passed away a couple

Of years ago three years ago and I didn’t have a trophy for it and I thought I know what I’ll do I’ll clean up one of those old bowls and so I did and um got a nice shine on it and all that beautiful grain came out you know

It looked absolutely fantastic it wasn’t the greatest of trophies uh but nice looking B Delight to sort of yeah yeah yeah interesting uh history of the game is this ball here from oh BR just passing through some near misses I’ve got some of my garden as um garden

Art um I should go and have a check although I think they’ve worn down a fair bit they were size 5 and 132nd might just be first I play with yeah well I mean I don’t no wonder I was you know struggled to get to goups

Of them someone just said oh look these these balls have been at the club this is way back in the day I was talking about with Steve crito and they said now these ones this chap here he’s dead now you could have his balls and so I hauled

Them out not knowing anything about balls and um so 5 and 132nd I could hardly get my hand anywhere near them and uh put them away one winter and when I when I went to pull them out first day of the next season one had split so um

Yeah so that was it fortunately the other three are in the garden we they doing a a good job and taks yeah it’s often in the winter the old the old composite Poes will split if they’ve got a little heel line cracking them because they get cold and then hot again

Yep oh here we’re looking for a a bit of action oh good try no I do remain fascinated as to what a rubber Bowl would have been like John because they were they were a popular alternative to the wooden bows uh I went to the P mahoi Bowling Club Centennial

At the end of last year and I did a bit of research so I knew that in 1923 uh Dunlop Tire Company was advertising rubber balls as an alternative to the wooden L Lum V ones obviously didn’t they didn’t uh they didn’t stick as a uh as an alternative it must have

Been a very solid rubber I would imagine course to be environmentally non-friendly now not good yeah oh yeah so this looks it’s one anyway to the bises yeah one you see that little indication there from Peter Bellis who gives reeno tap on the shoulder either encouragement or on

Don’t get tired now that’s three short ones one or the other cuz she has been superb yes this is a 14 end match we’re playing the 10th end just two shots in it lot of people watching from various parts of the country Alex just had a message from an old indoor bowling mate

Of yours Viv Hudson who hson say she’s watching and a whole crew watching from upper Hut lovely lady Viv our national umpire for a bit Indo balls look at this from Peter Bellis that’s unbelievable what a shot look from the yes from The Players Point of View

That’s what you see and he’s just drawn around it that’s amazing funny enough when he was calling Rene down on that same hand I thought oh wouldn’t you be rather going this hand here because it’s a bit more open and then there’s that could happen now he

Might come around that hand because it’s um ideally situated but when You’ played a perfect one like he did why change your hander says John I played a perfect one last time why will I change my hand oh there we are there’s the answer but it’s just so toght getting oh

Getting around this and finishing well he knows where the danger is that if the jet comes back and that’s be that’s really top stuff isn’t it what a thrill and a privilege to be watching someone of the reputation and still high skill of Peter Bellis gosh I did some commentary I have

Done some commentary work with Peter over the years Alex and um you know it’s as a commentator you shouldn’t sit keep quiet you should just keep on talking of course where well you have to but there were times when I just didn’t say anything because what he was saying was so intriguing and

Interesting it was fantastic very knowledgeable man some very interesting stories too when he gets talking so the score now is 139 and we’re on the 11th end so a little gap opening up between the bers team Bellis and then Kalin and Bry for the difference three inss to go after

This so here we see this as an indication of what Alex was talking about earlier the format of 242 that is because um Peter played the last couple of bows he stays down at the mat end and the player who’ played the four in the middle now becomes the lead

Mhm and it’s not difficult if you haven’t play much of it to get a it lost in at all yeah it’s hard you don’t concentrate yeah it’s harder to explain than it is to play like you try and explain two4 you go I’m player plays two

And the next one plays four and then the other player plays two and then it switches around around and the same sequence and so on and so forth and people look at you with these wide eyes but if you actually play it it does make a sort of sense PRI yeah oh it

Stayed yep I think if you just keeping your head it’s two four two two balls then four balls then two balls and you alternate that’s pretty much it here goes Ren playing the side that she likes I think we used to call it to we call it

Hong Kong Hong Kong Piers was that what it was called was that the same thing was it yeah Hong Kong Piers is 242 and Canadian peers and Australian peers are the walking peers which is the 2222 Which is far too much walking for me John yep remembering that tomorrow is the final

Day of play for the somerset Nationals it’s a finals day we’ll have a quarter a semi and a final to be played at bows P tutu beautiful camera shot there of the the flags as well as some people watching on and some houses in the in the Hills here on a wonderful sunny

Tanaki day uh but free entry to the finals day John and what a day it promises to be beautiful stuff you said the dean and Lisa were still going last time we checked the the updates defending Champions Dean gilon and Lisa white and they both found themselves right at the pointy end of

The fours event so would have been feeling uh good about their chances yeah there’s some really close matches out there and I think you know if you’re watching this and just keep an eye on the um BS New Zealand website the post section results as they come in you’ll start filtering through you’ll

Get an idea of who’s in and who’s packing their bags yeah and down to a nice simple quarterfinal uh tomorrow so three games to be played tomorrow uh they’ll be live scoring on bsub again once we’re uh well and truly once we’re underway it’s a reasonably technical

Task and there’s some things that need to get done at the beginning of a day so uh forgive us if you missed the first two or three ends uh but live scoring will be uh on B up for those who wish to watch it but easier still either come

Down and watch it at BS p2u or I’m sure if you flick a text message or caller uh someone uh there’s going to be a few hundred we expect down here to watch the final s I’m sure they can give you blowby blow updates on the game that you’re particularly interested in

Always Keen interest I’m getting I’m I think like you I’m getting um updates on a couple of matches I’m really interested in Alex and so sometimes when I go quiet you’ll know that I’m or you can see me anyway you know what I’m doing yeah you Che my

Phone always find a way Bowlers to find the results to get the results Peter will be disappointed with that last uh last shot he was yes just sort of always on the tight side steering it down kayin Julia so that just one down but you would think looking at that they’ve got

Three seconds haven’t they but he won’t be thinking too much about that it’s about grabbing shot so he’s giving us ball room to breathe beautiful speed finished on that wide side kayin now on the forehand inside out maybe and inside out oh it’s going to hold up for two alone that’s

Good balls there from Kayla H and we think uh it looks like yeah the two they clearly two blue sticker balls of kalin’s are the two shot balls and rain with a couple of feet to draw the vot she’s been playing uh so well this week that you know I wouldn’t

Uh I’d be more surprised if she didn’t draw the shot than if she does here John she’s coming in on that hand that she went way wide earlier so she will remember that that smile well if her weight’s okay she’s played a bomb look at this look at

This she’s made oh what a bow bom yeah so good that’s stunning and and doesn’t it it knocks the guts out of you doesn’t you when you’re holding a couple and you’re just trailing by four and you think this is it this is our chance now and someone steps up and does

That just you oh you’ve still got two go balls to play Bri here you go bring out the big ones having able look at this she’s close bang oh what that’s a little bit stiff there uh bar ainson sort of got a little feather chipped a ball it feels like it’s important that

Rain draws a second shot here because bar and kin still have second and third John yeah can see those blue sticker balls second and third shot to the right of the Jack so Rain Must draw a second shot oh hold your breath how good is R that’s

Yeah so now it’s a bit of weight here from Atkinson doesn’t need to be too much just needs to be into that shot can she get it I think that was a sign of no I can’t just missed it wide and far be a little bit disappointed with that that’s

Beautiful bowling from R Bella so unbelievable stuff there to turn that head around and 159 the score now we’re only in 12 and uh like a shark uh smells blood in the water I suspect that Peter and Rene will be looking to run this one home and he still about the Jack

Perfectly down the middle yeah yeah really good like a shark smelling blood I I thought you were going to to these are the days of our lives almost was going to be the next line like sand Through The Hour Glass or whatever it is I don’t

Have I don’t have the voice for it John I would have had to pass over to you for that I used to have the voice for that so kayin well up when you’re not playing poorly but you’re being beaten it’s painful yeah what can you do right just

A little bit of luck they’re playing well so for kayin and Bri I think it’s about they just like they’ve been playing well they continue to do so hopefully they can get a break if they can score two ends in a row it’s a happy

Days but what can you do you know it’s just the bis is so have been absolutely exceptional and it does hurt John but it’s not as bad as if you if you feel like you’ve played to the best of your ability and you get beaten by people who

Have an incredible game I never find that as upsetting as to whether I lose a game because I’ve played poorly or made a silly decision or on the occasion where you lose a game to people who have uh been smiled upon by the gods of balls

And get some good results so when it’s a wellplayed game you know what can you do the Jack if it Wass yeah but look at those four that’s half a mat covers those literally they’re not’s gone back saying thanks Peter I’ve got to do the

Job now do I again I did it on the last end and now I’m doing it again there rain same process every time gets the smile on before she plays the ball and then delivers it how’s the weight I’m not sure if well why would I question it John

Yeah I was going to say not sure that she want it back I’d be happy poor green though he no she was a bit narrow yeah yeah another one for the collection here that’s unbelievable there’s five balls touching each other oh four B four balls touching each other one to the

Side must be easy place to deliver the ball to and ring can touch the inside of those balls and just trundle in for second for a second shot this is close here she might just do that she is she’s going to touch the inside of them and there you go that’s another shot

Perfect really good so you feel at this stage John six shots the difference that does it feel like a m end for kin and Bri considering there’s only two to go well I think so because you know we just what we’ve got here is another one to that collection

Of six ball seven balls now change your hand Ren thank you okay you’ve got two what’s going to be the opposition’s next shot and let’s be ready for that yeah and she puts it up to pretty much where his foot was great stuff and for br who just be

Thinking it’s such a small correction that I have to make here surely this ball will turn and she wants to move the Jack or was hoping to move the Jack well now rin’s bowl is right there in the tuck Trail and see where it would have gone

Just right where Peter Bellis had asked for that ball I think that’s a big part of it too John is with reene and Peter both of them being very experienced and I would argue that Peter is probably literally in the top five um head readers in our game in New Zealand

It’s not like you’re going to make a lot of poor decisions so not only do they play well but the decisions the Tactical decisions that are going to be made by this team just aren’t going to be wrong so they’re going to have every opportunity to when

You get those smart head readers who are experienced they can miss the Target that they can miss and still be good is Bri ainson she’s very close here MWI in that’s a beautiful bow a brilliant bow from Bri ainson yeah but well covered by Peter Bellis who called reeno the so

Guaranteeing probably only going to drop a a two at maximum when you have players who are playing well and uh playing smart balls it’s hard to see uh hard to see them relinquishing that six shot lead anyway pleasure to watch as of kayin and Bri

Yeah yeah and and bis is well aware of the you don’t get into this stage of a mixed peers or national competition without being able to play the shots and so he understands that obviously and thought right if I was her or him I’d be

This shot here so I want to be ready to cover that it’s not bad there actually not a bad home there he just very he just a very clever man you know you talk to him about bows yeah and the the bows brain that he possesses always plays the percentages

So I I think we see that with our great skips is even uh yeah that’s good I’ll finish my thought after this actually we’ll just watch uh yeah I’m interested to see what hand he plays here he is playing the forehand so options here are he sits the second shot and gets

Two he just turns over his own and the Jack will roll back to his own back there but that’s uh sort of the second option oh and the third option was get an inside edge of that ballast ball and comeing for second so just a wait just a little and

I think it is getting a bit tricky out there yeah we’ve seen some bows affected by the breeze absolutely we’ve seen bows affected by the breeze and kin just a little bit tentative was probably trying to play Perfect wank to draw a second shot as we see Peter Bellis line up on

His back hand smooth the silk when’s it going to turn well he’s hoping it turns in time to just get an edge off that b is just sitting to the right of it just wanted to that one that just moved in you could see there there was an opportunity

Wasn’t there to come in and flick onto the onto the shot bow so I just I mean there’s so many options out when when you view it when Bellis is playing the lik well these four players are all high quality players and it’s great to just try and

Understand what they’re trying to do yeah and when they all agree to being microphoned and actually talk on talk while they’re playing um Alex we we’ll learn even more but that’s a distraction for everyone yeah we got that once Peter was actually it was at the mix Piers

Last year they didn’t need the game I think they’d already qualified and Peter was M up and had a little earphone on and some absolute fascinating insights uh from Peter in that match and I still got my thought dangling around John but I’ll wait until after after kin’s ball so he’s looking

To make a bonus here though holding one to must score end two would be fantastic for the cause of kin and Bri and not quite it’s not going to come back no disappointment take the one so what I was going to say uh John when I was ruminating about um Peter

Bellis and his head his ability to read ahead and to know the game of balls is if you think about Peter’s game I think what you see with the properly great Bowlers is that they amend the game they play based on how they feel they’re

Playing so uh when he was in his pump and his Prime and practicing and practicing uh Peter had the best Drive shot in the world and he was happy to uh play that drive shot when the situation called for it plays less balls now and no longer calls that shot because he

Doesn’t practice it as much so he’s amended he’s you mend the game that they play based on what they’ve got to work with which I think perhaps not all of us do some some Bowers have one game one way to read the the game of balls and

That’s all they have uh whereas the the greats of the game who understand it Peter’s not only thinking about what the right shot is but he’s thinking about how well it can be played by both himself and rain and it’s just uh that’s quite impressive and that’s

Enough um waxing lyrical for me on my so box oh I that’s right playing to his strengths or their strengths wind is getting up here at Pat 2u it’s probably the most blustery it’s been in the last seven days of competition I thought that was interesting call too that RR coming this

Way last time remember she Drew those two spectacular balls uh and even though Bri is out there in the drawer she stayed on the other hand but so that’s obviously she feels feels more comfortable on the backand yeah we talk about the ball’s actually quite a small

Target and you’re almost unlucky to hit it although sometimes it feels like a beach ball when you think it is in your road yeah this is close here so if rain gets around this it proves ah she’s just short she had the right line yeah yep absolutely interesting so five shots the

Difference and there’s an end to go just running through holding to so it’s it’s a great Ed building really for kayn br because they they need to score realistically on this end and the Final End two threes would be enough for them that’s probably what they’re

Thinking in the back of their heads to get a three here and a three on the next 10 and we’re through to the quarterfinals tomorrow Peter that’s a lovely ball it’s got the running good shot I think so it might well be the shot look at the weight he he played

That was perfect weight quick finger measure by r that’s a slightly tighter green than he took last time but if his R weights okay he’ll be in for shot here oh kin on the forehand he needs quite an adjustment that wasn’t a an encouraging ball from

Him last time it’s the one that’s way short by 3 MERS so he makes the adjustment picks the jack up he’ll be happy because it’ll give them three I know not quite but that might well be the shot now yeah I think when was measuring she was looking at the one that’s slightly

Short here we go blustery shirt blowing or flick it a little snck it might have worked in their favor Alex just moved it slightly off the center line to the left as we view it and that was towards the Bellis bow well movement of the Jack here would be great for Kalin and

Bri gosh so Peter just asking if he’s one down now still or if he’s actually flipped the Jack over enough to our left that he’s holding the shot one just the one down she says he’s on a nice line I don’t think he’s got the weight he might

Do oh I think he might might have the here might through that hole and sit down Fallen Fallen that might do it oh he’s lost his hat and he needs it feels like a dangerous head to have out to lovely ball so you see there this is a round of

16 and mix Pi Somerset Nationals and tanaki we getting to the pointy end of it this time tomorrow we’ll have the final on I think Alex won’t we yes we will yep yeah three rounds tomorrow three rounds of play broadcast start will start at about uh whenever we started today what that

11:45 11:30 sorry 11:30 Bri just under the Line I just wondered whether Peter would ask for that because you know a four here suddenly and playing the last end and you’re only one ahead that’s a different situation to what they would have wanted so he’s just getting Rene to come in and C those four balls and I think

She’s not a mile away as she comes into that pack you’ll be pretty you’ll be quite happy with that not quite but still another half meter on would have been perfect the let’s listen to them remember when she was we’re playing the Twilight balls Alex and had it on

Sky and Bri said I’m really nervous I’ve never been on TV before yeah she’s been on it a few times since she has both just thinking here there you go best shot is to just smack them yep oh good shot shot shot your second and the shot out very good that’s uh

Well this will be an interesting count that could be four is it absolutely beautiful bow there four down what a shot that was from bar we’ll get a replay of that very good discussion about it wasn’t it and kin who confidence won’t be so high with some of the shots he’s

Played oh she’s grimacing or this might be too heavy let’s see what she does has she come into that group or gone past it and suddenly we’ve got a game on 145 Final End what a bowl what an end from Briar and kin let’s just watch a

Replay of Bri shot removed the Two bows of Peter bis’s as clean as a whistle look at this bang bang thank you for coming what a shot and decision hear about where do you place the where do you place the M they say I don’t know it’s a good

Question it is and it’s and the answer is uh where do you feel com comfortable it’s all very well changing the matter up just to try and upset the opposition but if you can’t cope with it yourself then it’s a pointless exercise isn’t it and you’re playing against two outstanding players who probably

Couldn’t care less where the matters It’s the final end of the national championship and it’s uh progress will go home after this end the Jack’s being delivered it’s a little bit shy and the uh the wind absolutely getting up here at the Patti Bowling Club as windy as it’s

Been for the last seven days coming this way last time I think was when we had seven bows in a little group about a meter to the right of the Jack good ball so memory worked Well Peter not rushing he’s over there fixing the board I like that so on his back end here you can see that the wind moving things around that looks a bit wide for his bow there strike one to kayin and Brian good balls strike two and nice on two just over the Jack

Yeah very well played very well played indeed and Peter stalking after this one yeah stalking after this one needs it to hold oh underneath the line and interesting you know I said three years ago I couldn’t really see Peter and R dropping six shots over three ends but kayin and Bri have done

Everything required of them scored on the end that they needed to score on picked up a three a four on the previous end now only require two to win the match and find themselves in the quarterfinals tomorrow and that was after they went four inss with without scoring they went from 90 to

159 before they got a single to 1510 and then that major end 154 I’m holding shot I’m going to think this one out rain and Bri will have the four shots to play in the middle fresh from being a member of the the Women’s fors Champion team with d

Raina Karen Guilford and Linda Ral and she was playing balls like this and uh that’s a pretty good one first up BR using it back hand as well Mak it to two a little bit one down I think Peter said one down and he wouldn’t B against RR making a correction

Here well even if she gets a bit of her own ball that’ll be good the area play oh gosh a bit of nothing it’s always in the area isn’t she rain sort of there thereabouts yeah yeah gets your ball a real chance Brion if it turns this is good

I’m just not sure if it’s going to there there we go there we go oh sure yeah forhead now being switched to the forehand side oh she played that um previous one pretty well isn’t she unlucky not to get on it what a tense final end this is this

Is and in comes R Bellis with a beauty how’s the weight oh great try I mean is it is this the last in John or are we going to see an exra end to decide the quarterfinalist if this turns in it’ll be enough for two oh no don’t sell the farm

Oh that’s unlucky to be that’s just unlucky there’s no other word for it oh that’s right Peter bis has his finger up bra moving that’s so frustrating such a fine line Alex isn’t it between a Top Shot bowl and one that turns against you oh just un that bowl

Was just unlucky there was an eighth of a bowl that she could see that could go uh poorly and Bri somehow hit the eighth of the bowl and now rain balis adding insult to injury what a ball what a shot that’s beautiful and the beauty

About that John is that it’s it’s it it I need to make myself Mak sense it has essentially locked in one of the bows and if it hasn’t it means that one of kalin’s bowls would disappear so if we look at the head and remember the blue stickers uh that’s annoying the blue

Stickers uh kayin and Bri and the red stickers are PB and rain so if kin hits R’s ball and they both go it’s likely that the Collision Bowl will go to the left as we see it and then one of the planty bowls will go to the right and

The two white balls of kalin’s will also disappear which isn’t actually it’s not that helpful so Peter and’ even if Kalin smacks that are likely to be holding a kills almost a b result yes so on the hit those white balls do disappear interesting don’t you you wish you were

Ready to stand on the mat and play these last couple of balls I’d rather I’d rather watch them yeah yeah absolutely so kayin on his back and may have opted for the draw the draw to try score one shot he’s very close here he’s very close here he’s got it he’s done it

Oh hases he not sure let’s see how it looks I think he may be holding one shot that white ball of kayin H is he’s got a a reasonably simple shot to do the same thing again and TR it back for two so I wouldn’t be surprised to see Peter play

His forehand here and try and match that blue sticker ball of kalin’s that sits at 8:00 to the Jack either that or you play kalin’s ball for him and play the back end which looks like what Peter’s trying to yeah it looks this the less um the easier shot to get

Out oh here we go hanging wide hanging wide not the end of the world back there so one for the win here oh look this could be the perfect finish to this game for Ken hella and Bri Atkinson coming down on the back hand sit those purple balls of’

Bellis take the jack to yourself or back you have chance here to win this game with the last ball so I think uh kin will play on his back and trying to Dad draw it to sit with two a similar bow again he’d be unlucky to give the shot away

Here yeah Bellis still has one to play of course doesn’t he yeah CU they uh B second right this to give themselves a chance of Victory or do we see an extra end well that’s gone into next week oh well maybe that must be he’s done that on purpose right like uh he’s

Gone we’ll just cover the back we’re happy with one for an extra end and Peter and R will look here to see what the chances are because you never if you can avoid it you’d avoid going to an extreme right like You’ try and play a winning

Shot that’s a reminder of what the head looks like you again Peter would actually be unlucky to drop more than one if he draws on his backhand side cuz it’s Collision bow the one in his hand is going with the Jack so you you’d only

Drop a one if if he was unlucky this could be incredible way to finish this match yep I think there’ll be a few people looking at that and saying he could drop a three here but he’s not going to get uh into the zone and so what have we got it’s a

Single to Brian and kin and we go to an extra end 15 a piece and an exing ball 15 oh gosh so there will be a toss of the coing to decide who plays first and uh what would you do John if you won the toss and it’s the next Str

Do you go first or do you send your opposite position into B well I don’t think there’s been much advantage in the having the Met really they you know the all these players are able to play whatever length is decided so I think I’d probably look at last

Bowl I would absolutely be looking at last B cuz it’s quite satisfying to win with the last B but I think they’ve decided to go first which is really interesting and we’ll know if it worked or not because either Peter Bell will win with win with his last bowl or he

Won’t that’ll be that’ll be the decision but if I was playing a three-time world champion eight time National Champion who’s won a number of those with his last bowl famously the most famous last bowl of all time uh I I I wouldn’t be giving him the last bowl uh John I would

Be go no no no that’s right wow what a good match to end today with oh it’s been a great match to watch for sure oh it has and just watching it and talking about it you get a bit nervous about these things and I can only

Imagine what Bri ainson was feeling on the mat then their first bow of this extra end clawing their way back really from a position where they look to have little show at 159 and then 1510 with just two ends to go and then a magnificent shot which

Cleaned out all of the opposition bowls to grab a four on the 13th and then that dramatic single on the 15th 15 all a lot of a coaching from the master Morris Sims rain on the back end and uh it’s just occurred to me John that it’s 242 so Peter Bellis he played

The most famous Last Bow of all time actually we have the four middle ones and I got a bit carried away got a bit carried away there yeah but adds to the story you yeah I was trying that’s what I that seemed like it made sense to me

And then like oh no no that actually doesn’t make um that doesn’t make sense so on the crossover rain with a close ball fry one with good weight one with good green feeling good after saving the entire match Ken hella that’s a good line comes in inside

That ball of his own settles in for second shot PB on the back end what a game he’d be loving this wouldn’t he yeah well you’ll just be loving this still wants to win you know at the top level just knows how to there’s demeanor on that as one of

You know I’m comfortable here you do what you can I I’m still a top bowler yeah I can play the shots yeah kayin and Peter I’m sure have played each other on a number of occasions both being BSI that’s good Under Pressure good shot so 20 years ago that shot would

Have gone wouldn’t it look at this look at this on the back end oh what he had it it was looked to be square on didn’t it to n that out I don’t think he’s made it an easier shot for next time though just that little bit of movement no he

Hasn’t interesting that kin switched to the backand now after playing such a good ball on the forehand side Pete Peter decisions to make he want to connect with the Jack first yeah on the back hand it can’t be far away here re’s interested hold hold hold no not quite

Well it comes down to have a look mighty effort from Peter bis and Boulder cam wouldn’t be surprised if kin followed this ball up too may as well well they’ve got the shot and so it’s a different tactic isn’t it what do I do here should I should I

Be putting one over the back or should I be matching those Reds or Peter will yeah you look at the forehand I think yeah on the forehand remove the ball get the Jack if he’s actually wide he could get a real fortuitous result and coming off kayin hul’s bow that sits

Wide Peter’s last bowl of this final so I think you look most famous last bowl of all time and it’s Peter’s last bowl so let’s wait and see what he can manage with his last yep and re’s hoping he gets it because she doesn’t really want to have to play

It on the forehand so Bellis tight shot for him forehand just enough weight to reach that shot bow and reach it he will this is pretty good is he going to miss wide just missing wide gave himself every chance found the get clean and he’s going to say to Rin that

Short ball of yours hasn’t helped me much if that’s hers is it no it’s not so okay it’s Bri ainson so rain and Peter staying down the SE and that’s clever so wait and see what what shot Brier plays I think we’ll expect to see ring playay

The forehand as Peter did looking to swoop onto the bow or the Jack so they can see that if R does make contact the Jack will come out to the right and oh I think she’s shorter than what they wanted I think she he wanted her about 2 m over

Yeah she looking for a block don’t it would have been deliberate R’s shown no signs of knowing how to miss yet in this uh in this game and again who would be against this being successful on the forehand I think R will probably play less weight than what we saw Peter play

With but just that reaching weight you’ve got uh two red sticker balls at 6:00 and 4:00 to the ch polar Jack on the forehand can we see it from her end Alex what would she be seeing not much wouldn’t see much of the Jack that’s what rain see there you go that’s all

She can see she’s close underneath the line that was a nice weight though wasn’t it it was beautiful weight oh Bri now wanting not to be short put one back where that bow of the bicis is gone way back by kalin’s feet yeah that’s

Better here we go now is it going to be R Bellis with the most famous last bowl of the sumerset Nationals who knows crowd gathers now she’s going to get tied up and so we’ve seen a remarkable turnaround and a fantastic win by two of the Young Guns of New Zealand bows kayin

Hella and Brian Atkinson they beaten Peter and Rene Bellis by by 16-5 coming back with a Fantastic Four on the 13th and then a single on the 14th to tie it up at 15 all and the one the extra end great stuff and thank you John for joining me in commentary for
