Some tips to improve your golf grip, from Jesse Hackett, PGA, Head Golf Professional at Maryland Golf and Country Clubs in Bel Air, Maryland.
All right welcome back to the teaching Studio here at Maryland golf and country club um I want to talk a little bit today about our grip all right um tends to be in golf usually the most important things or the most boring things to
Learn about uh and to work on uh but the grip is the only thing that connects us to the golf club uh so we need to make sure that you know we’re attached to that Golf Club properly right uh you can have a really good swing with a bad grip
And you never get to see the benefits of that good swing because the the grips holding you back okay um so what I always like to start with is I want to make sure when I have this club sold on the ground if we’re going to do it this
Way right I want to make sure that the club runs kind of diagonally across my fingers right and what I mean by that is by the the front part of my index finger the very top joint down to the bottom joint of my pinky right so here this is
What I think the key is right because you’ve probably already heard that you want to make sure that you grip it with your fingers right uh which can be a little difficult for some people but what you want to feel is you want to grip it with your fingers right first
And then allow that hand to just a fix to the club okay so again it’s caddy corner or diagonal across the fingers we grip it with the fingers first right so it usually sits down here and then we take this hand and we push it across so
Some the general thing that I like to go off of is this V on my left hand is I want to make sure that it’s pointed in the general direction of my right ear right shoulder uh I definitely don’t want to go too far with that V and I
Definitely don’t want to be pointed at my nose or further with that V okay so in the fingers roll and then I always thought the right hand was much easier right now a lot of people we get into this a lot the best way to grip the club
Unless you have really big hands right is we’re going to interlock we’re going to take our index finger on our left hand and we’re going to interlock right with our right hand now again the key to the golf grip is making sure that the club gets in your fingers okay so we
Don’t want it in our Lifeline that’s no good okay so we’re Interlock in our fingers we close the fingers and roll the hand all right so something interesting right this thumb is going to get covered up up by the lifeline in your right hand all right so we
Interlock and then you’ll see the lifeline is going to cover up my thumb okay so our next little checkpoint is this V that’s now on my right hand is going to also point to the same direction right ear right shoulder somewhere in this general area Okay uh
You don’t want this hand to look like this and this hand to look like this right you always want your hands essentially to match right so your palms will kind of be facing each other okay um if you struggle to get the club in your fingers right uh you’ve probably
Seen Adam Scott do this but they actually like to either put the club out in front of them right so it makes you kind of force into that angle that diagonal in the fingers okay or something you’ll see me do a lot is in my pre-shot routine is I get set up I’m
Right here right I get it gripped I’m checking my target out and I pull this club up and my right hand just kind of Falls onto it okay um so that’s just a little tidbit today about the the grip uh there’s definitely uh some more we can talk
About with that um but please don’t hesitate to reach out uh I’m I’m more than happy to help you with anything you may need thank you we’ll see you next time
