Hi there Ryan Rell here at golfshake.com we are in the performance center at Howley Hall Golf Club here in Leeds because the weather again is terrible outside but we’ve got two very very new ions from Callaway to show you so the brand new paradigm AI smoke and AI smoke
HL iron so as you can see these two irons are very different in their design and their looks and they’re aimed at different types of golfer so we’ll start with the AI smoke it’s got the um the smart face technology which both of these irons have and that’s all about
Trying to make it hotter across different parts of the club face now Callaway have used data from real golfers uh to design this club face to make sure that different areas of the face are hotter than others so looking at where us sort of golfers miss the
Middle of the phas and how to get the most out of each golf shot that we hit we can see this is a slightly sleeker design slightly narrower Sole and Top Line to it there’s a bit of a redesign of the Leading Edge and the back Edge so
How it interacts with with the turf and how that iron goes in there because that’s obviously very important to maintaining ball speed and quality of strike so Callaway have really looked at that now when we move on to the AI smoke HL we can see HL means High launch so
We’re expecting this to go a little bit higher now Callaway have achieved that by you can see the sole is much wider we got a little bit thicker Top Line on there so it may appeal to a slightly more mid to high handicap goal for this
Club uh still a nicely design there uh and again with some of those proprietary Technologies so we see the AI smart facing there we’ve got loads of weight low in the head we can see those that shaping that’s been done for that Turf interaction as well to make this iron as
Forgiving as possible but also move through the turf as fast as possible now we have the max fast version of these two irons which I don’t have here at the minute to test but the max fast is really a lighter version so slightly lighter head lighter shafts lighter
Grips to really help those players who struggle with Club head speed to get a little bit more distance right now we’ve talked a little bit about the tech let’s go and hit them and see exactly how they perform so we’ll start off with a standard AI smoke iron I’ve got a seven
Ion here like I said I’m going to hit this I’m going to hit the HL and I’m going to hit mine just to give you a bit of a comparison on here so initial looks I think it looks really good behind the ball it’s not anywhere near as big as I
Was expecting it to be it’s a nice compact head I did get to try these um a little bit when I was over in in Texas uh before Christmas and and really enjoyed hitting them on the Range to be honest so I’m expecting similar results quite a nice strong flight and probably
A decent amount of distance with these as well certainly feels very strong off the face yeah so we can see ball speed distance-wise straight away pretty good there yeah I mean that’s landed just short of 200 yards with the 79 which is just mental again just very hot off the face
Does it sound really nice no not really it’s a little bit kind of hollow sounding and a bit clicky certainly not you know if you’re a player who’s used Forge clubs your whole life you’re not going to like the sound of it particularly but it it’s definitely forgiving it’s definitely something that
Is going to help the majority of you out there to get a bit more performance but it certainly doesn’t sound in the same leag as like the Apex Pro and and the Apex MB that I use in the CB as well but you wouldn’t expect it to either to be
Honest I think what it does do though is it sits quite nicely behind the ball and if you that type of player who really wants a more traditional looking Golf Club but still needs a bit of help you know this could be right up your street
To be honest right let’s go hit a few with the HL and see how that compares so obviously the high launch version we’re expecting to see this peak much higher we’ve got more width in the sole more weight low in the head as well so before
We hit it let’s just just talk a little bit about Loft okay so my 79 that I’m going to hit is 34° this one in the high launch is slightly weaker than the standard Paradigm AI so this is at 30 so 4 de stronger than mine and the standard
Paradigm AI 79 is 28° so that’s pretty strong I mean in my book that’s a five iron really I know that what’s going to happen as soon as we put this video out there’s going to be a comment on how oh The Lofts are jacked really strong no
Wonder they go really far blah blah blah there’s a reason why people do that we’ll talk about that a little bit later but before we hit this okay I would say looks wise I don’t hate it I think it looks quite nice and it certainly is
That kind of design and cavity back sort of look that a player will like if they need an iron like this okay so if you’re that player who slices it a bit maybe and the reason why the the HL has come out is because a lot of people I teach
Can’t get the ball in the air properly so um this High launch with having so much weight underneath it is all about trying to get the ball in the air spin it a little bit more there’s plenty of of players even though they slice it they hit down so much and decrease the
Loft so much that they never get the ball Airborne so this again for completely different type of player than what the AI smoke iron is designed for this one could be the answer to a lot of your prayers if you struggle to get the ball Airborne so let’s hit a few more it
Certainly looks bigger there’s more offset the top lines fatter all that kind of stuff which some of you will not like but let’s have a hit yep certainly feels pretty good similar to the other one we can see that the height has just gone through the roof
There as well which is to be expected definitely launch is much higher we can see where it’s hitting the screen is definitely higher it’s probably going to help a lot of you hit it a bit straighter as well potentially because of that extra elevation that we’re getting let’s hit one more
Again just super easy to hit super easy to hit high and get it in the air that’s exactly what it’s designed for so I’m going to hit a few with my 7 iron now just so we’ve got some data to compare we’re going to hit a few more with each
Of these ions and then we’ll have a look at the results okay so when we look at the results having used the AI smoke AI smoke HL uh and my 7 ion right okay so let’s have a look at the data here so we can see um the AI smoke HL
As predicted Peaks the highest at 131 ft AI smoke 116 my 7on 116 okay but we can see there’s some very big differences in the distances so my 7on average carry 185 191 total which I would say is a day where I’ve swung it quite nicely there
To be honest that’s kind of top end of what I’d expect with my 7on uh we can see AI smoke 197 carry 205 total which is crazy for a 7 iron and we can see that uh the HL 190 carry 195 right so we can see the ball speed is significantly
Higher with both of them as well uh spin higher with the HL as you would expect so it’s launching higher spinning more exactly what it’s designed to do now again we’ll go back to that Loft kind of question that we were talking about before so yeah we’ve already spoken
About the HL at 30° the standard um AI smoke Ion at 28° for a 7 ion and my at 34 so we can see why some of that difference would be there just purely on the Loft but what I then did was try the new HL ion in the eight ion because when
I looked at the loft of that guess what it’s exactly the same as my seven so I hit some shots there and we can see a bit of a difference so what it actually does it shows that some of the technology that these manufacturers are putting into these ions and
Strengthening Lofts isn’t just to smash the ball further right we are actually trying to get better performance for the average golfer out there so most of you struggle to get the ball in the air most of you struggle to spin it enough to hit it far enough and what Callaway have done here
Is put loads of Mass low in the head right so what’s that going to do well the lower we put the weight the higher the ball’s going to launch and if we don’t crank the Loft a little stronger it’s going to mean that that Ball’s just
Going to spin straight up in the air it’s going to go really really high and just drop out the sky and not really go anywhere so when I compare it Loft for loft here so we’ve got an eight iron in the smoke HL versus my7 we can see some quite big
Differences so you can see there that the spin is three nearly 400 RPM higher than mine we can see in terms of the distance and the carry distance that it’s significantly shorter we’re talking you know eight yards shorter and then in terms of the total distance we’re seeing
About nine yards difference so when we’re actually comparing these ions we’d expect them to go further than mine we’re actually seeing LOF for LOF that it’s going shorter I don’t know what some of you will say was it shaft length well no because I’ve the um HL is quar
Of an inch longer than standard as standard and mine are half an inch longer than standard so there’s a quarter of an inch difference between the two shafts it’s going to have a pretty negligible effect on the distance that we’re hitting it and certainly the club speeds and and um and everything
Were pretty much the same so around that sort of 93 94 mph Mark which I would normally swing it at hopefully that gives you a bit of a look at the new AI smoke and AI smoke HL ions from Callaway I’ve certainly loved testing them if you’ve got any questions about them pop
Them in the comments section below if you’re going to try these irons go and get properly fitted okay so um don’t just go to the nearest place to you have a bit of a look around see who’s a specialist in Callaway go to a Callaway Demo day go and see someone who knows
What they’re talking about and try these irons for yourself because you will be very very surprise hopefully you’ve enjoyed that and we’ll see you all very very soon

Doesn’t that prove the point that lofts have got to strong, if people are struggling to get the ball in the air then the lofts are to strong. 28 degrees for a 7 iron is crazy. Some manufacturers are going to a 27 degrees that’s nuts. In my book if you want to go further take an extra club, I think a 7 iron should not be under 32 degrees. There’s no use being able to hit a short iron in to a green and not being able to stop it.
The HL 7 iron span more carried higher and further than the Apex irons , other than feel why wouldn’t you play them ?
That ending was so heartwarming. I'm not crying, you are!
Don't understand why a larger sole and chunky iron makes it high launch
The boomers refuse to understand that these clubs have to be strong lofted because of the MOI and all the weight low. Its called science guys
Too many are stuck thinking about clubs like its 20 years ago. These new clubs are great but you cant think of them like classic clubs. I bag 58-54-50-AW(46)and PW (42), more clubs at the bottom of my bag but I'm hitting the 5 iron 225 so I only need to carry one wood.
Seems like the HL is the best of this set imo.
great review, awesome golf swing
I got fitted for the hl versions of these the feel was great better than the Mizuno hl irons. With out much speed they went significantly further than other irons I tried. Quite pricey but they work. Nice review.
Great video. I would like to see what a full set of Smoke irons would look like for your swing speed. We look at they pros saying how far they hit it, it would be cool to see a review with your swing speed, AI Smoke tech, vs. a tour pro distances. There is a good feeling to hit an 8-iron 180.
