What causes path and plane issues to make your ball want to kill squirrels let’s check out why good evening L Golf Academy members and guests and welcome back today we’re going to take a look at five amateur golf swings to show you some cause and effect based on path and
Plane and how simple of a fix this could be for you and your swing I originally just wanted to uploaded one student at a time make short videos but being out sick for the past couple of weeks I have a lot of catching up to do so I decided
To make a couple long form videos but try and watch the whole video because there’s a lot of information on certain swings and you could see your swinging it and maybe it might work for you the goal of this channel is to help educate you as a viewer to make educated changes
In your swings and not just follow the latest trends which could actually do more damage to your swing and if you want to appear in one of these just go ahead and send me a face on down the line the link is in the description below and we’ll put our Bary purple line
All over you to figure out your cause and effect and these videos do take some time I’m running for academies teaching full-time so I do try and find some time to make these for you so if you could show some appreciation like share comment comment subscribe whatever you
Need to do as we take profits from this Channel and send it straight to the hill Hood Foundation in K flat South Africa to get children the game of golf but enough of that let’s take a look at these five amateur swings to see if it helps your Swing okay so the first amateur on the screen doesn’t necessarily have a bad swing but we’re going to look at what he has to do to a compensate for this very upright setup and fairly close to the golf ball now he makes this but what I
Want you to focus on is how that setup predetermines his compensations that he has to make but he does so pretty well so we’ve got that Barney purple spine angle line and that is important to see does he lose posture and if you take a look at the whole total swing he remains
In his posture pretty effectively down to impact there’s not a lot of spine angle loss here and that’s one of the advantages of standing a little taller is you don’t have to tilt as much to remain in your posture however we do see a lack of room here where his arm almost
Brushes his pocket waiting is pretty good if you look at his footwork let’s back up to that full swing and watch the footwork so the waiting is pretty solid we see a little bit after the swing right there we see that fighting on that left heel to remain balanced but being
Very tall and getting very crashed to the golf ball with his hands I can imagine it we can also see the arm path is very flat at the top so we see a lot of lashing past impact secondly we’re going to look at where his grip
Placement is so I think that this grip can be a little bit strong specifically past impact we can see how that Club closes down pretty quickly and we can see if we keep scrolling past that left hand might be a little strong but it might also assist him in helping keeping
That club face Square as he makes this move but let’s back up to the topic here is what we’re trying to figure out with your path and your plane so everybody has a predetermined path which is called the plane now that’s the lower plane line now the upper plane line is
Basically where the shoulders are at the top and we’re want to run it parallel to that lower plane line and this is to show you where that left arm should get to if it’s a natural turn based on your setup so initially we can see that he’s
Very close to the golf ball more upright some positives with this but there’s some negatives that that can come into this and number one is the steepness of your downswing based on your predetermined path so if we go straight to the top of the Swing here we can see
That he remains in that lower path pretty well arms are going there the club face is doing pretty good job of staying neutral to that original setup line that Barney purple as we get to the top we can see he naturally gets to that secondary plane line it’s slightly
Higher but it’s pretty good his shoulder tilt is relative to that spine angle so that’s looking pretty good but now take a look at what happens because he is such an upright player this is where things get a little bit dicey and it comes by way of do you connect your
Hands to your body before you turn so when you are This Tall you can see you are naturally going to be steep now if you don’t connect your arms to the center of your chest sooner all of a sudden you become a little steep on the
Way down so if we back back up and we do a little triangle check here we’ll do this in red we’re going to draw where that triangle is and take that but of the club point it straight down so we can see that in order for him to stay
Connected to these two intersecting lines that hands must initially ride down that shaft till about shoulder height and then he can turn but initially we see that it rides up that right side of the triangle now he’s a little bit in trouble so what does he
Have to do to fix this what we’re going to see is a steeper downswing and the next frame here is still slightly steeper next frame out is pretty key because he has fallen into his two plane lines parallel perfect looking here but because you’re standing taller and
Closer if he were to go and naturally turn around on to keep that on plane look where he would make contact he can make contact out way ahead of the golf ball so this is where compensations have to occur that club head now has to fall down pretty quickly down to this plane
Line so we see it happen right away so that’s that compensation move and we can see that right elbow really leading the way Club face is slightly open now so he’s gone from slightly closed to slightly open so that opening of the club face with this manipulation is
Probably why he has to have a stronger grip to help him square that club face from here on out he does a really good job of turning together and there’s that release past impact and because it’s a strong Club face we see that club face
Now a little bit shut of where it needs to be and we indicate that with that line here so all in all we can see this is a pretty good swing with what you have given yourself now if I were working you with you as a student we
Would do some setup changes first and then we start to learn how to make our motions from that new setup change which does require some body motion changes and some arm changes but without understanding your statistics it is very hard to start making suggestions on the swing because you do such a fantastic
Job of compensating your setup so if you’re watching at home and you do have a steep swing you have to look at your setup and how you work around your setup but you do a fantastic job of staying in your posture for most of the Swing don’t try any changes without somebody
Watching you though it has to be somebody that understands cause and effect and what these little subtle changes can do to your swing hope that helps you let’s see who’s next all right amateur number two similar setup we’re standing a little close to the golf ball
A little bit more upright but let’s take a look at how you handle this based on your body schematics we see the left shoulder dipping down we see the overswing we see inefficient weight distribution and a delay turn but you find a way to hit that ball straight so
This is where it can be frustrating for you as an amateur remember golf is is not about your good shots it is about your misses anybody can hit a good shot from any position is can you miss it within reasons so you can get your
Handicap to be lower that is a secret of go so let’s take a look at this one to dissect what I see happening because of cause and effect so we’ve got our usual Barney purple line let’s draw our plane lines lower plane line and green we can
See how vertical that is and we have very little room the higher This Plane line goes you have less room to work with so do you get your arms to that top plane line we can see that you don’t couple things that are affecting this is look at your shoulder tilt so we’re
Going to draw this in red and forgive all these colors all over the place but basically on your setup that’s where your shoulder tilt should be at the top of your swing we can see your shoulder tilt gets a little bit steeper at the top of your swing here and we’ll put a
Yellow line to show you your steepness so when your shoulders add tilt a few things can happen I’ve seen arms work out in this area but your arms work down here so you brought your left arm much lower and closer to your body but watch what happens at the top of your swing
You kind of feel that and you have to feel your arms need to get higher so what do we do we start standing back up out of our posture and to try and get those arms to get back there you almost got it back there but look how much of
Your body you had to break to get your arms up there you have a third lever involved we see that left elbow breaking and now we have three things trying to hit the golf ball in2 seconds which becomes a timing game we’ve sacrificed our positions we’ve sacrificed weight
Distribution this looks like that club is pointing weight down which brings your weight on your left side and now you’re going to be stuck on that left side and from there there’s not much you can do other than just muscle this way down in there so we can see the weight
Is stuck we can’t really get any weight distribution youve tried to recorrect your spine angle but look how far back that club is it is stuck to your right bicep we see your left arm straightening out to try and time this do we maintain our posture if we come on down we are
Not turning because we are just trying to stay upright so at your impact you see your new spine angles a little bit higher you’ve definitely moved into the golf ball you’ve run out of room to turn because if you added any sort of turn if your weight was correct that path would
Be a lot steeper because when you turn your path also moves out and pair that with you trying to seesaw back to centeredness that’s where your hands and arms can save your gos swing which they do here pretty well you were able to strike down to the golf ball we see a
Decent release we see you trying to stay in your posture but it is a game of luck when it comes down to you breaking your posture and trying to reroute that posture back to being somewhat athletic while you strike the golf ball you see you staying in your posture so you have
It in you you are definitely an athlete but we have to get you more athletic in the back swing and maintaining your shoulder tilt relationship with your spine angle so because you do like to get lower as you take that club back I would recommend your posture start here
So your butt is more out there your feet are more behind you so you feel like you have a little bit more room to work with so then your arms now can stay connected out in front of you and stay somewhere in between these two lines now keep in
Mind if we were to reconnect you and start you in a good position so let’s say that is your spine angle and that is where your feet are now if we go back to the top of your swing your arms would still be hanging down fairly naturally
There but look at all the spacing it would provide for you to turn and tilt so when you take that club back your path of your hands won’t be inside because what’s getting them inside is you adding tilt so you can just stay tilted and get your arms more out in
Front of you I know that was a lot to absorb so if you do get confused if any of you get confused let me know in the comments and I hope clear it up let’s see who’s next all right next up we have somebody that I saw is suffering from
Slicing the golf ball this looks like it was a pull and it definitely started moving right at the very end so this is a pull slice when I see a pull slice I know there’s a path issue and definitely a club face issue overriding that pth so
We have to look at first of all we look at the balance we see some balance issues past impact very hard to maintain level and we see most of the waiting is stuck on that outside left heel and he falls back so we don’t see a lot of the
Body moving through the golf ball getting to the left side past the impact which means that there is a momentum issue that we have to deal with but let’s start from the beginning and let’s look at setup and what setup can do for you and what we see here is already we
See the shoulders are pointing left of the Target and the feet are pointing right hips there some in the middle so we see things are kind of crisscrossing each other so you have one line going here you have another line going there and you have another line going there so
When you have three things that are pointing in a different direction it’s hard to keep your balance it’s hard to keep your alignment and with that comes path and plane issues now the big thing is I want you to take a look right at impact let’s find impact position and
What we’re going to look at we see that toe curving right over the golf ball that typically that does occur when you hit the heel of the club and so I look at that action to go why are you hitting the heel so let’s back it up a little
Bit so what we do is take a look at where the hands were it set up so let’s draw this in green and draw a little arrow where the hands were and let’s go straight down into impact and the cameraman did a great job of not moving
So that right there is impact and we can see and just before impact we can see the hands are definitely moving up and out which is common because the Cub shaft does droop so we have to align for that but what I’m looking at is also the
Waiting we don’t see much dry from the right side we just see the turn and a slide at that right foot sliding out and we see evidence of him falling back meaning that he is stuck on that right foot and the heels rolling back towards his center Port now ball position could
Play a part in this not having a face on view does provide some challenges for me so we’re just trying to figure out what’s going on here but let’s look at the bigger picture let’s draw the plane so we’re going to look at the lower plane line and the upper plane line we
Can see there’s an adequate amount of spacing to get the club down into it take the club back hands are right on this could be a camera angle issue Club face looks okay it’s slightly disconnected we can see that if we extend that club out it is on his left
Shoulder already so it might be for pressed or he might just be pulling that club back too soon and when you pulled back too soon you start sacrificing some turn as we get to the top of the Swing we see a leveling occur of the shoulders so the shoulders are definitely leveling
Out they should be more perpendicular to that pink line so that left shoulder should be slightly more down and we also see the weight shifting forward now we have some loading up issues so essentially when you flatten out your shoulders your left shoulder gets flatter than they need to be now they
Have a different path that they have to use so once we come on through we can see again if we draw that patented triangle check and it’s not really patented but I like to say that anyway let’s draw the triangle check and see where those hands should go initially we
Can see them working their way a little higher because we’re not driving so usually when you drive your left hip towards the Target and remain back the right shoulder out of necessity falls down sooner and that gets your hands to drop down quicker so you’re on plane
Because the there’s no drive because of the weight distribution was stuck we see more of a rotation so those hands are coming too far above while the club is dropping below so on a picture it looks pretty good you say well that’s pretty good it’s forming in the slot but those
Hands are way too high they should be a little bit lower to allow him to come shallower so without the drive the right shoulder can’t dip down we drop into it we get the club going down the slot look at the club face is fairly open at that
Position with your weight being stuck on the right foot we start losing our spine angle slightly taller so we’re catching it on the heel of the club and our path is probably going left and we’re catching on the heel probably with an open Club face but it’s giving the
Perception of a closing because that club is spun around now if we take a look at when we finish you have a pretty good job of getting it back in the slots but if we keep rolling through you can see the hands do finish lower than they
Need to be so overall I think this is a posture loss based on inefficient weight transfer based on your footing so you definitely need to go to somebody to check on your alignment first to help you out with that get into the better posture and learn to utilize your weight
Distribution correctly to help you naturally drop in the slots without forcing anything hope that helps you let’s see who’s next all right we finally have a face on view so let’s do our patented Barney purple again and let’s draw the shoulder tilt and this is a setup issue that I see let’s watch
This swing over and over again just to see the footwork so we see some decent footwork as we slow this down we can see how the weight distribution does play a little part in this this is mainly a setup issue ball position position issue and once you don’t understand how the
Ball position really affects your release points it becomes a challenge and you probably start working on body positions and hand positions instead of just solving the initial cause of all these issues so let’s stop it right about here and let’s redraw where the center of the spine is center of the
Spine is doing a pretty good job of keeping up with the hands which is great so based on that setup the ball position should be here now I know that some of you like to do get a little forward press going on here but a couple things
Do occur when you get too much of a for press number one is we start playing that ball way too far back in our posture number two is when we get that forward press we are not connecting it with the left arm when your ball position is back and your left arm is
Forward you are not creating a angle here now this angle does play a part in Impact unless you can stay back when you strike the golf ball and tilt and add that much tilt to close the gap it is very hard for you to do this so what
Happens is we start losing weight distribution and rotation as a result because we have to throw our hands at the golf ball so we do start to see some evidence of this as we take that club back we don’t have much weight distribution going to the right side our
Turn is helping us but what we start to see here is we start to see a lean towards the target so now you’ve got an issue with forward lean because if you stay in that forward lean and truly drive down and strike the golf ball with your exaggerated forward press you’re
Going to hit so much dirt you might break your wrist you might break the club so you’re going to have to learn to get out of that we don’t necessarily see a drive left we see a turn but the right foot is coming up already there’s definitely some issues with losing
Posture if we had it down the line view we could probably see some posture loss and because you’ve had that forward lean if we draw the golf ball straight up again to our new spine angle look how much for the back that same golf ball position has shifted relative to the
Center of our body so you as an athlete you look pretty athletic have figured CLE this out that you have to get your hands to try and throw a little bit early so we see some of this past impact where the right hand is going under the
Left and we also see at impact the right foot isn’t necessarily driving up it is holding its posture because if you drove straight to with that right leg and push some of that weight through to your left hip your whole body would move a little
Bit more left and just to show you the relationship the red lines indicate where your spine angle was at address and your forward shffl if we go down to impact the green lines represent where you struck the golf ball with your forward shaing and your center of your
Chest is still connected to your hand so you do a really good job but you are sacrificing rotation you look at both your hips are facing us your shoulders are facing us there’s hardly any rotation that’s because you cannot rotate if you did rotate your hands
Would probably be more in this area when you rotate your arms go with you now imagine if you try and rotate your hands would be here and if we draw your connection your chest should still be connected there and now you be forward leading so much that it would be very
Hard to strike that golf ball cuz when you forward lean you make the club essentially shorter so you’d have to fall down even more so you can see setup can be a serious cause for you so what I recommend you do is start working on your setup so you definitely want to
Widen your feet out so if I draw a line from the inside of the heels up to the sky we can see how narrow that stance really is it’s about head width so you want to feel like the inside of your heels are probably where the outside of
Your heels are now give you a little bit more stability to work with so you can move the weight right to left secondly we want to move that golf ball position about one to two golf balls out and then just go ahead and don’t try to forward
Lean so much don’t try and shaft lean so much just let the club shaft sit a little bit straighter which will then connect it closer to the center of your chest and from there you can just turn naturally get more body involvement get more weight distribution so I hope that
Helps you let me know how it goes in the comments below and let’s see who is final let’s put Barney purple up there again and watch this swing and we can see he tries to suain his posture pretty well comes down into impact pretty decent motion there this is definitely
Looking like a setup issue we see the right shoulder really covering the golf ball so the shoulders are definitely pointing left at setup which is going to give you some path issues and you have to compensate with that with either changing the ball position or not releasing it as much or delaying the
Release somehow or moving your body out of the way incorrectly so it’s close it’s just not quite there let’s take a look let’s go from the beginning and what we’re going to do is look at the shoulders rocking to see why this is a path issue so base on that setup the
Shoulders should be there they do a pretty good job left shoulder slightly higher but it’s pretty good let’s get some measurements out here so we’re going to draw an angle between the shoulder tilt and the ground and that is let’s call that it’s hard to tell what’s straight let’s call that
38° now we’re going to take that same measurement just past impact and we’re going to see how much tilting did you do and is that enough so we see 48° a little less tilt than you would like if this was me we’d be shooting for
53 to 58° just to get you more tilting and so that could be a definite indication of the right shoulder getting too open at address when it’s too open at address you have to really shift so I bet you what will happen is if you square your body up correctly with your
Shoulder alignment that tilting will also increase because it’s very hard to tilt when you’re open to the Target because momentum taking you low and left based on your opening of your alignment so so if I were you before you start messing with anything else give that a
Try I’m not sure if that ball position is correct as well if we draw a line we can see it’s definitely favoring the inside of your left heel so if you have a face on it would definitely make this easier and maybe that’s one of the
Reasons why you are trying to reach for that golf ball by opening your shoulders instead of tilting slightly so ball position could be the culprit of this as well so keep that in mind gasp grip Alam set of posture creates a gol swing or or it can destroy gossing without you even
Knowing it so your tilting looks okay definitely get that right shoulder back to start with move that ball position slightly more back so you’re not Reaching Forward as much and start to look at your tilting it should improve pretty quickly for you with those couple changes but that’s just the start of the
Journey because once you get that setup changes now you’re going to have to deal with how your body reacts to those setup changes I hope this helps everybody watching I really enjoyed doing these if you do like this hit that like subscribe share comment whatever you can do to
Help us out and again if you really like this stuff we do offer Channel memberships and that money goes straight to the children in the hill Hood Foundation have a great day everybody feris and Greens
