Guys so in today’s video we’re going to be talking about something that will make you much more consistent with contact but also give you a bit more sneaky distance even though it’s not necessarily something that you’re looking for now what you’re also going to understand very much from this video
Is why I ended up making a grip change based upon practicing exactly as I’m going to explain to you guys first and foremost and the key thing that we’re going to be taking away from this video is width now the easiest way I think to understand width is to start with some
Pit shots okay so if I was going to do some pit shots 30 40 50 yards something like so what we would be looking for is a consistency between the club head and the lead shoulder and particularly with the distance that those two stay so if I
Can get my lead hand only on the club and I can take that back keeping it nice and wide swing it through nice and wide so that distance stays the same that is going to give me a much better chance of consistently striking in the same place
Each and every time so when it comes to pitch shots we know we’re supposed to favor the lead side get the sternum over the ball and then that means that we we can maximize that width like so okay like this and this is one of the big
Things that I’ll come on to later that really Inspire my grip change as well now if I was to do bending this is where I’m losing width so you can see the way this starts to fold my hand start to get too close the centaline of my body as
Opposed to maximizing width now I could straighten my arms and produce some good shots by doing this type of technique but the problem is the chance of me being able to do that and deliver consistency in terms of trajectory and contact really really diminishes so to understand width that’s what we’re
Talking about we’re talking about the lead arm staying comfortably straight or we’re trying to maximize the distance the way that your hands stay away from the center line of your body and in biomechanical terms this is known as an extensor Force so if there are some of
You that are ever a bit uncertain about things like your grip okay and your grip pressure and where you should be applying pressure that’s one of the things you have to bear in mind which again will come to you have to always be consciously pushing your hands away from
The center line of your body otherwise there will go to limp and then you’ll be sacrificing width so understanding the pitch should help us understand that’s how you’re going to get consistency with contact now the second thing is what about the distance well the distance is going to come from you understanding
What you’re supposed to be doing so we now know we’re supposed to be pushing our hands away from our body but if I move in the back swing my upper body massively over my trail side and then I push my arms out this is as high as I
Can lift my arms oh you can try this at home anatomically your arm go any higher and that’s why we see all the pros pivot with more of what’s known as a thoracic extension which means keeping the head Stiller see now I’m able to elevate my
Arms up and a real simple exercise just at home just get yourself against the wall at home and all I want you to do keep your arms comfortably straight and just lift them to the side of your body and then have a look and then go higher
And what you’ll notice see this movement I’m doing here this thoracic extension is the thing that’s going to give you that ability to lift your arms higher which inevitably is going to lend itself to more speed because if you can lift it higher you’re going to produce more Club
Head speed and more of that effortless distance so we know this idea of width is going to encourage you to stretch your arms out and it’s going to encourage you to lift your arms up which is going to give you a much wider swing let’s think about the grip change for me
I was always somebody I well I was somebody who was inspired very much by Tiger and I always remember Tiger’s book on his fundamentals or this is how I play golf and used to talk about an interlocking grip and that’s where you interlock your uh lead hand index finger
And your little finger on your Trail hand and I always did that always played very much like that but one day I started to practice a little bit more of my short game I say one day this was probably about 3 four months ago I started to do a little bit more practice
Hopefully in preparation for this year and what I started to do is I started to notice that my pitching was much more consistent if I held my wedges like a pter so this meant that on my lead hand I would grip it more like so so see the
The way I grip it more in the Palm on the lead hand okay and then I’d go a little bit more in my palm of my trail hand and instead of interlocking like so I would get my lead finger sitting as same as I would do
With a Potter and that’s what I did and what I noticed is that I felt it was much easier then to hold it a bit more like a putter that would get the club Chef sitting a little bit more vertical that meant I could get a little bit
Closer to the ball get a little bit more weight on my lead side and then I could just maintain that width and what I started to notice is that pitching was a weakness in my game and all of a sudden at least on the driving range I was able to demonstrate much more
Consistency and then because I was doing more practice like so and then it just started to make much more sense that I didn’t need to change my grip for the full shot so I’ve ended up ever since changing where my lead index finger sits down the trail side of my hand and if
Any of you were interested or you could pick up on it if you look at the videos over the last few months that’s what I’ve been doing every time I demonstrate hitting a shot I’m holding the club like so and then that just helps me maintain that feeling of width throughout my
Swing which is what I absolutely love as opposed to Once Upon a Time it was more of an index finger so I’m not suggesting you have to change your grip changing your grip won’t give you more width okay what I’m trying to say is that if you understand the concept of width your
Game can holistically improve if you understand the concept of width and you understand you’re supposed to lift your arms up you can gain more distance and what I’m then trying to say is you might just find that you could grip it slightly differently and it might just
Help you out similar as it did to me see you soon

Great video, makes total sense! I do the putter grip too for 30 yards and in, will try it from further. When you kept it for the full shots do you still have club in the palm or just a normal grip in the fingers with index finger out?
Brilliant Russell.. I have always used my putter grip for chipping. Never really tried with full swing but now going too work on this 🙂 great stuff
Cheers Russel, Will give this a try.
Wow! That's big news …
I have gone back and forth with interlocking and overlapping for a few years. I release, I think, the club better with the overlapping. My dilemma is that I have small hands and already use an oversized grip (W7) because of the arthritis in my hands. It seems the wrong way to go with the overlapping. So I struggle with the concept.
Testing in the simulator this winter. Overlapping is winning but going to extend my finger now and hit wedges this week. I am a senior and my drive swing speed has increased from 77 to 83 (goal is 90 this winter) this past month by getting more width, and higher hands – Thanks Russell
Thanks. Can you show it closer up and from down the line and relate it to the backswing ?
One more question: what about the palms coming apart during the swing? Does this help avoid that?
really interesting feel at home. Can’t wait to try at the range. My lead hand refuses to breakdown in any way at all and my turn is in sync…..
You are so good with your hands. I can't use interlocking at all. We lead grip the same but I choke up quite a bit more. Even with driver. Thanks
it can’t be this simple, can it? I have always wondered about the overlapping grips and Harry Vardon grip, what did they do before those grips came along, why did those grips take over, what i am trying to ask is, is this grip a much more natural way of gripping the club?
Very interesting… have been experimenting with a variant of this but will give the extended fore finger a try 🤔
Interesting. Padraig mentioned recently that he uses a double interlocking grip for more driver speed.
I completely lose width and tend to have a run-on with my arms at the top. I can play decent golf that way (4.9) but I wonder if that grip change is something that could help, At least for short game. Something to try for sure.
I just tried that grip and the club was way more stable in my hands. Here's the thing with golf, do WHATEVER works for you, WHATEVER helps YOU hit it straighter and longer, stick with it, and DO NOT listen to anybody that tells you any different. It's not about looking good, it's about BEING GOOD!!! Of course what the hell do I know. 😂😂
