All righty steuart so nice playing 8 under through two rounds tied for the lead right now how would you assess what’s been working for you through two days here at w um I think I’ve just managed this course really well it’s been um pretty Breezy yesterday especially today not quite as breezy but
Um just the course that you just need to manage your way around you’re not going to hit every Fairway out here the rough is significant this year so um just managing your shots and where you miss and and when you do hit Fairways and you’re able to take advantage of some
Good comfortable yardages that’s when you have to take advantage I’ve done a pretty good job of both of those things is this a course where you feel like in terms of you have a better chance to contend than other courses on tour at this point in your career how does that
Kind of work out with how you feel I have no idea I like playing here because I think the course is pretty cool and I like being in Hawaii in the middle of wintertime and so um I just always feel good and positive about coming out here
After a break and that usually has lent to you know me just to be in a good mind frame playing here I haven’t always played great here but I’ve had some pretty good play over the years I have no idea statistically if I like match up
With this course well or not no clue I wouldn’t want to ask that but I just feel like my I have good positivity coming here every year and it has lent itself to having a good attitude on the course and patience and you know those usually good things for golf the off
Season did you take much time away from practicing how did that kind of go about yeah I did because I I played about what I would normally play in the fall but I threw in two trips to Italy for the Ridder cup which really like had a cost
And uh by the time we finished with RSM I was pretty whipped and I played a couple of small events with uh some friends like little Pro member type things and one the PNC father son at the end of the year but kind of didn’t do much practicing after that and normally
I would practice hard getting ready for this and this year I didn’t I just kind of purposfully rested and felt like that would be a smart thing to do to be well rested coming into the year instead of grinding what kind of how many tournaments do you think you’ll play
This year if you were to guess uh I would say combined obviously yeah I would say I I’ll probably do 23 thereabouts that’s what I’ve done for like a long long time and this year I’m not in the Signature Events yet but I am in the Champions event
So I are you in next week I’m in next week yeah at the um at haahaa yeah yeah sorry man sorry so um and I’m playing there yeah so it I just I played 23 events just because I don’t pick that number out it just works out that way
And I have a feeling that I’ll probably do about the same this year we have a grandbaby coming our older son Connor and his wife Jess are expecting in February so um that’s kind of the sort of the Line in the Sand for me schedule wise right now once that happens I’ll
Kind of reassess the schedule but barring any weird circumstances I would think somewhere around 22 to 24 tournaments did you ever talk to anyone uh a little bit older than you who’s who’s made the transition at at what point do you um stop competing out here
How do you how do you know do they ever tell you how you know nope most everybody I talked to just said you’ll know they didn’t say how they didn’t even say how they knew they just said you’ll know and uh you know every time I
Three putt or uh hit a ball the water or something like that that’s when I feel like I know that it’s time to stop and quit it’s just one shot St but that’s what golf does to you it just makes you want to just break every Club in your
Bag sometimes but um no most everybody just said that you’ll know and they offer the advice to pick one and stick to it and I’m I’m not doing that I’m not going to pick one and stick to it because I’m I’m I’m not making the FedEx
Cup or the Schwab Cup my top priority to to try to capture one of those cups I just want to play good golf and I don’t care where it is I just want to play the best I can play and and get as much out
Of myself as I can and um so if that means playing half here and half on the champions tour I’m okay with that did you play okay today I played okay yeah I’m not it’s not spectacular but I had a good score and I just managed myself
Around the course fine did you have any especially early in the round did you have any contrast of Club selection from yesterday afternoon to this morning on certain holes CU I I’m sure I did I’d have to think about it a little bit um five might come to mind one maybe or
Well five I hit uh yeah yesterday I hit Fairway both days on five and I hit a four iron which wasn’t going to be enough Club yesterday and today I hit what could have been an eight iron so I mean that’s a pretty big difference but um the wind wasn’t like a complete
Switch it was just a about a uh 45° change and that um put a lot of the holes in the crosswind situations yeah yeah yeah do you like even though you’re kind of a fence sitter at least when it relates to which tours you can play do you like the way golf is
Headed with these um with the Sig events with the top 70 instead of 125 all that stuff if I was in the top 50 I’d really like it but I’m not so I really don’t like it I unfortunately I do think it’s probably the right thing to do um for uh
Golf fans um if all the players play in those and we get great Fields a lot playing for a you know playing for a lot of money then it’s great but it’s just uh I don’t think it serves everybody and um PJ tour kind of been about you know
Doing the best for everybody for all the pros and all the members so um I’m a little mixed on that I I see that I agree with you I’m also seeing um non-ig events playing for 8.5 million on average it is and but it’s just it’s relative it’s what you’re playing for in
Points too and keeping your job security and your ranking and um to me that’s just it’s a it’s a little bit out of balance it’s a little bit out of balance and I understand where it all came from we had to do something because we had a competing venture out there trying to
You know swallow our players up and so um we had to give our players a reason to stay so I get it been doing this a long time and I’ve sat in those boardroom meetings not lately thank goodness I don’t want to be part of that
Right now it’s not easy but um where I’m sitting I don’t really love it I’d rather be playing for 20 yeah but do you but are you um do you get any sense the the the 10 top 10 in the FedEx and the little swing stuff for the five
Is that enough or should have been more because there’s still a chance for you to get toble I think it’s okay that if if if you a a top 10 or a top five finish out here is noteworthy these days you got to play so so well to finish in those spots
So um to honor those finishes with a chance to move up into those sign Signature Events I think it’s good um I just um the the one thing that that personally I am not for is I played in the first year of the elevated tournaments back when they were called
Designated so long ago you know and they were um they were mostly full field tournaments with cuts and all the top players played and I thought they were just like abs absolutely brilliant yeah it’s hard to convince me and a lot of the players that aren’t in those
Fields why being a small field matter so much that’s that’s where I stand on it that was probably a big divide though wasn’t it in in terms of the membership cut no cut house size and you can imagine which way it fell it fell about to the 81 player they decided that they
Everybody above that wanted to have small Fields but I don’t know why um I’m just not I’m not convinced why a 880 man field is is if that more Elite than a 156 man field I don’t get it I played in all those when they were
Full Fields I mean not that Phoenix has 156 players but you know what I mean it’s as full as I can get it for the daylight and the frost and all that it’s 132 I think but it had cut it had all the players in it I just thought those
Were such great tournaments that year your rookie here was 97 are you done you need him to leave oh jeez sorry okay that’s
