THE OLD MASTER IS THE FOCUS OF THIS CAREER BREAKDOWN. THE FORMER LIGHTWEIGHT KING AND MY P4P NUMBER 1 FIGHTER OF THE 1900-1909 DECADE
So hello and welcome to my latest um career video This One features the old Master himself Joe Gans the former two-time lightweight champion and rated as my pound pound fighter of the decade 1900 to 1909 narrowly beating Fighters like Jack Johnson Abel Sam Langford and
Others so the old Master is one of the lightweight division’s legendary figures okay a master Craftsman of his time um and of the early pioneers of um um hitting moving counter punching um in fact so to the point that he actually inspired and was admired by the next um
Great lightweight champion who reigned for a Time the great Benny Leonard who we will get to in the 1910 1930 era so let us focus on the old Master himself okay let us go to the first slide which is the first of his opponent lights now Joe Gans himself okay fought the
Excellent defensive fighter Young Grio going one win no loss and two draws so he fought the Great Australian fighter three times and went unbeaten against him he then fought former colored lightweight champion Bobby dobs three times okay who uh going two win one loss and no draw and then he also fought more
Recent Hall of Famer um okay Frank Ernie going one win one loss and no draw of course um Joe Gans fought terrible Terry McGovern on one occasion losing okay early on and he also fought former world aweight champion Eddie Connelly um going one win no loss no draw now of course he
Thought that might Sam lford himself okay now that was a defeat um so he went no win one lost no draw to my pound pound number one rated fighter of all time and he fought another top 50 fighter of all time okay in terms of Barbados Joe Walcott uh that fight was
Also um not a win for Joe Gans it was a draw so he’s no win no loss and W draw now Gans twice beat former lightweight champion um and fantastic fight who has a video himself coming not the biggest career around but a fantastic little career Jimmy Brit okay who also avoided
Sam lford like the plague um Joe Gans went to win no lost no draw against Jimmy Brit and he also for a Trilogy going unbeaten against former wellow Champion U Mike twin Sullivan okay going two win no loss and one draw and the names go on next came big puncher Harry
Lewis who if I recall is the only fighter in boxing history to actually be charged with manslaughter after a fight uh I believe that was if I remember it was against Mike Ward the Canadian kid um who went down got up and was put down
Again by a brutal punch um and sadly um he succumb to injuries from that fight later so a tragedy um but hady Lewis was certainly another champion in Hall of fam and a feed name in his time um an expert boxer super experienced what what had Lewis didn’t know about the boxing
Game you could write in a postage stamp I’m not joking so he went no win no loss one draw against the great Harry Lewis and he also fought um the durable day battling Nelson on three occasions or joans losing one um and winning two including um that excellent win where he
Was literally snapping battling Nelson’s head back repeatedly round after round after round and out boxing him um for over 40 rounds while his ankles were getting hit when he was near the ropes by people with um sticks and things at ringside but he still maintained his composure and got the win and
Administered a lesson to battling Nelson showing I think the composure that Joe Gans had in ring when it was focused now he also fought um another great defensive fighter and one of the great fighters of his time um Jack Blackburn okay another opponent of Sam Langford of course great rival Sam Langford fought
Harry greb train Joe Lewis amongst others great Fighter um Joe Gans went two win one lost no draw against Jack Blackburn and he also fought George B mcfaden another very good fighter and a former pound for pounder on seven occasions Joe Gan going four win one
Loss and two draw now he’s not done yet okay I’ll just finish this slide off uh he also fought the loopa loop puncher uh Dave Holly um five times going and beating against him going three win no loss and two draw Dave Holly is a major
Name he also fought former P pounder in my alltime rankings the excellent Willie Lewis um going no win one loss no draw and I think everyone on that list there has a video incoming showing how deep I’m going this time but that first slide there of Joe ganser’s record okay you’ve
Got the excellent defensive fighter Yung Griffo okay you’ve got Hall of Famers like young Ernie swarming attacking Fighters like Terry mcgoverin okay battling Nelson you’ve got multiple alltime greats you know from from Jack Blackburn to Harry Lewis to Barbados Walcott to Sam Langford and when you
Look at that list and add in holles and Willie Lewis and and Josh mcfadin Jimmy britz you know that is an incredible slide of opponents that Joan fought and if you look at the list the only ones he didn’t beat off that list are Terry mcgoverin Sam Langford Barbados Walcott
Harry Lewis and Willie Lewis okay five of those opponents he didn’t beat uh an amount of those he didn’t beat alltime greats themselves that is already an incredible slide um for J Gans and this is one of the reasons why Gans can rate above Roberto Jan at lightweight because
Roberto Jan in his time no doubt was a ferocious puncher at lightweight he was like a Terminator okay he’s swarming two anded attacks contained just pure brutality and most opponents couldn’t handle Jiran he was a very clever boxer as well very good at slipping punches coming inside he was a very skilled fast
You know aggressive fighter Jiran but in terms of the lightweight resume you know Jan’s wins over De Jesus and Buchanan um and other Fighters contenders like Jimmy Robertson all these other guys to me cannot better the work um that Joe Gans did you know in fighting holles blackburns Jimmy Brits Sam langfords you
Know to me gans’s resume at lightweight is on a different level um to um Roberto Jan although Gans also fought welterweight Etc um but you know me point but that is an incredible slide of opponents there but we are not finished let let’s go on to the next one now on
This one okay um Joe Gans beats former Contender and colored fighter rof Turner um going two win no loss no draw and he also beats um the excellent Sam Bolan um going one win no loss and no draw he also beats another fighter who has a video incoming Willie Fitzgerald he
Beats him on two occasions out of two um and Joe Gans also fought five times okay against dangerous Black Fighter Steve Crosby uh who was a very good fighter himself Gans went four win no loss and one draw he also for contender kid mcpartland three times okay going again
Unbeaten against him going two win no loss one draw and he also fought kid Herman another very good Contender who has a video incoming this is not Pete kid Herman the bantamweight champion who will come in the 1910 1930 year of videos but this is the earlier kid
Herman from the early 1900s and he was an excellent fighter himself with a surprising resume when you see his video another fighter with a video incoming Otto seof okay Joe Gans beats him one win no loss no draw and he also fights D Hawkins another Contender of the time on
Three occasions going two win one loss and no draw he also beats the names go on and on and on uh he also beat Spike Sullivan okay another excellent Contender from time uh he fought Spike Sullivan on one occasion Joe Gans going one win no lost no draw and then he also
Fought Wilmington Jack Daly okay on four occasions when beating against him going two Inn no loss two draw and then he also fought the tragic Mike Ward okay um who with har call is the same Mike Ward who sadly did not survive um the repercussions of the Harry Lewis fight
Harry Lewis very dangerous puncher in his time very excellent Fighter um tragedies in the spot happen we never want to see them uh we never want them to happen but sadly um you know like someone famously kinded it is the hurt business um and sadly every now and then
These tragedies happen um even though it’s the last thing we want to see now Joe Gans beat Contender Jack Bennett on three occasions hour three and he also beat Spike Robinson on the one occasion they fought so over those two slides there is an excellent collection of names many of
These guys you know from Wilmington Jack D Dy to D Hawkins to seof to Herman to MC Partland J fitg have’ all got videos coming roof Turner sambol and Etc I cannot wait way I’m kind of doing the main Fighters at the moment I’m starting each division off with a main fighter
But then we going a deep dive um and as people who follow me blue screens will realize on this first era we are going way deeper than what I did before dozens and dozens and dozens more prating era Fighters covered across the divisions from heavy to bant and flyweight will
Start in the next era from establishment at linear line with Jimmy wild but um fantastic so from those opponents there okay as you can see Joe Gans went unbeaten against many of them and many of them even the non- Champions and non Hall of Famers uh tough contenders experienced Fighters you know Fighters
Like w wigald very experienced fighter got many good wins himself you know many of these opponents are often missed when you look at the career of a fighter like Joe Gan some people look at the resume they don’t know all the names but Fighters like Spike Sullivan kid Herman
Kid M Partland these were very very good Fighters you know black Fighters like Steve Crosby roof Turner s Bolan also very very good Fighters so Joe Gans has a much better resume than some people give him credit for I’ve heard um people say well Gans doesn’t have the resume of
A Benny Leonard or a Roberto Duran therefore I can’t really put him in that top two or top three that’s not entirely true like another great lightweight King the great Ike Williams you know uh many people don’t rate him over Jiran but yet to me his lightweight work eclipses
Jan’s lightweight work obviously Jiran went on to do great work outside of lightweight you know fighting the trilogy with with Leonard fighting Hearns Haggler bonitz you know Palamino um um all these other Fighters quas um but at lightweight to me Jan’s resume is not the strongest part of his career
Some very excellent wins there um and a good run there as lightweight champion um but yeah I think Joe Gans often needs more credit um for that incredible resume that I’ve just highlighted to you there so from the opponents listed there okay Joe Gans comes in with 65 major
Fights and he incredibly he only lost 10 of those uh of course one Sam Langford one on there to D Hawkins he also lost some other excellent Fighters like terrible terim and G but when you actually look at the list of Fighters he fought many of the best fighters he
Fought did not gain a win over Joe Gans Joe Gans managed to beat a lot of them and go beaten against them um you know like Dave Holly etc etc so you know incredible stuff so Gans comes in with major fights um with a record of 42 wins
Only 10 defeats and 13 draws from those 65 major fights I reckon gza’s top 10 opponents will probably come between because pretty much all of these guys would have been top 10 rated I reckon his probable final top 10 count would probably be between 65 and 80 which is a
Hell of an amount that puts him right up there with as our Charles Armstrong kener um in terms of major opponents so let us go to our next slide now people okay so on this slide we go to the first of his Starts Now gansz is
A pre rating hero fighter of course um for no rated opponents so percent of his career against rated opponen is zero I’m currently working on Maxi Ros and Bloom’s file and that is absolutely Insanity captured in a file I’m going to do a series of Facebook posts highlighting that so anyway back
To Gans anyway I’m not going to get distracted so the percentage or gans’s Korea fought against Champions is 10% Like said on Walcott yesterday that sounds low compared to some Modern Fighters but we have to remember remember that gansz had over 190 fights so to fight 50% you know like some
Modern Fighters will um you know he’d have to have nearly a 100 fights against Champions so we have to keep that in account 7% of his career was fighting Hall of Famers and 18% of his career was fighting pound-for-pound rated Fighters now in terms of um title fights 10% of
Gza’s career was title fights and 7% of his career um was making title defenses and when we look at the chaos that’s okay now um like I’ve said this is KO rate from overall fights I used to do it from wins but now we’re going overall
Fights so as a percentage of Joe gans’s career fights that he scored Knockouts is 51% 18% of all of his fights Gan scored Knockouts in three rounds or less and 2% of his career was first round koos now onto the distance fights now Joe Gans okay fought the four round
Distance on six occasions he fought the six round distance on 26 occasions he never fought the eight round distance but he did also fight the 10 round distance 19 times the 12 round distance three times the 15 round distance seven times incredibly the 20 round distance 10 times and he fought distance fights
Going 20 over 20 rounds 21 rounds or more on five occasions so 15 fights Gans fought distance fights that went 20 rounds or more now that 20 round distance fight total there of 10 is tiny when compared to a fighter like Bobby dobs so when Bobby dobs career comes his
Number is way higher than gza’s number in terms of 20 round fights kind of capturing the vast experience that many of these Fighters had in Long fights in ability to Pace themselves maintain form over long distance you know highlighting some of the traits that some of these
Fighters had but there is Joe gansas percentages and distance fights so on next slide we’ll go to chos Stats now gansar 100 Knockouts in his career um 36 of them were in three rounds or less which is a high tally and Gan scored five first round koos now Joe Gan sced
Seven Kos okay against Champions two Kos against Hall of Famers and koos starts include stoppages as well not dqs but stoppages referee stopping beans I’ve just listed them as chaos because it’s easier to typee that than have a huge sentence explaining everything to some people who come saying well he didn’t
Knock him out he stopped him so Joan scored eight kills off stoppages I’ll say against pound for pound Fighters and scored four kills off stoppages against unbeaten fighters of course he did not not score any chos against raid fighters from the rating era um that will come
More to prominence as in raid Robinson Ken area Armstrong you know Mike Tyson everyone else you’ll see the chaos against rated Fighters more when we get to the rating era so onto rounds box now Joe Gans fought a staggering 1,610 rounds in his career 263 rounds he
Fought were title fight rounds and Gans also fought 266 rounds against Champions now against Hall of famous Gans comes in with nearly 200 rounds fought against Hall of famous um 196 and against P for pound rated Fighters Joe Gans comes in having fought a massive 440 rounds 440 rounds against powerful
Pound fires now the three stats at the bottom there rounds against top 10 top three three and ring Champions um obviously will come more to prominence in the rating era where you will see um that breakdown for all the rated Fighters I’m going to cover but Gans has
Some incredible numbers to his career to add to the incredible resume um that highlighted so on to next okay let’s go through the categories of Fighter beat now in Champions Joe G had 21 fights against Champions and he beat seven individual Champions okay those Champions were Yung Grio Bobby Frank
Ernie former Welter Champion Eddie Connelly Jimmy Brit Mike twin Sullivan and Batley Nelson so he’s beaten a selection there of featherweight lightweight and welterweight Champions now in terms of the individual Champions he knocked out from those he beat um Joe gans’s knocked all stopped out Yung Griffo Bobby dobs Frank Ernie Mike twin
Suven um and Jimmy Brit so onto the Hall of Fame mcag now Joe Gans had a sh record against Hall of Famers than some alltime greats with 15 fights in total ganby four hall of fame Fighters individually they were young Griffo Frank Ernie Jack Blackburn and batlin Nelson and he scored Knockouts
Over two Hall of Famers they were young Griffo um and Frank Ernie so not bad names at all there to be knocked out so on to the pound-for-pound category Gans has a huge record against pound pound fighters who were rated in my alltime ratings with a massive 36 fights against
P Pounders going 18 win nine loss and nine draw now in terms of individual pound pound rated Fighters be Joe Gans beat nine okay they were young Grio Bobby dobs George elbows mcfaden Frank Ernie uh the loopa loop puncher Dave Holly the dangerous Contender who shocked lford by
Outboxing and beating him in their first fight uh which was a shock to many in Auditorium as well Jack Blackburn Jimmy Brit Mike twin Sullivan and the excellent batlin Nelson and the pound pound Fighters that Gans knocked out individually were Jung Grio Bobby dobs Frank ery um George mcfaden Mike twin
Sullivan and Jimmy Brit now like I’ve said on all videos now we’ll keep repeating it okay on some Fighters you’ll get the Champions Hall of Famers and pound Pounders who look the same on others there’ll be differences as you can tell the number of Champions at seven Hall of Famers and pound Pounders
Is different and there’s different names and some of the same names that’s just how it works um and that’s how it’ll work um going forward as well but I wanted to list them individually because another videos I’ve put stats on fights uh wins against rated Fighters Champions
Hall of Famers I’ve had a pound of Pounders in there now but I wanted to on these videos enhance me old blue screens by individually listing um because on the other blue screens I didn’t highlight what pound Pounders are Hall of famous Champions these guys have knocked out okay um and there’s even
More stats than what I’m showing on these videos in in my career files because from the initial career files I did I’ve gone back and mended them added load of stuff more in like record against Fighters rated when they fought them across different divisions like record against Fighters based on
Position in the top 10 and other things I’m adding in so you know it’s constantly growing but um it’s nice to be able to highlight all this different information um on these Fighters for everybody so let us go to our next slide now obviously this is rated opponent so
Gan’s been pre- rating era um it was long written tired and finished before the ratings came in so he zero against top 10 top three in ring Champions thus he beat no rated Fighters um grebs video is ready sadly that cannot come um until
I go on to the 1910 1930 ER but grebs is the first video to come uh so when I announc um you know that I finished on the last video I finished 18 199 10 er the next video coming will be had greb where you’ll see all this information
Including his rated opponents knocked out all this information on this slide and all fighters after that will include that information so the videos will become even more enhanced um obviously rated Fighters knocked out is also zero for the old master so onto this second more rating Focus slide okay again Gans
Zeros because of pre- rating so he was never top 10 top three rated or ring Champion th he gained no ring rating points um and th he was also uh by default not rated top 10 top three or ring champion in any individual divisions again in the rating era you’ll
See those statistics for all the fighters the longest unbeaten run for Jo Gans is an unbeaten run of 42 fights and just as a bit of a word you know me old preting here of Fighters I listed the Champions all of Famers and pound Pounders and then put some of major
Contenders or fighters in who the fought who were not in any of those three categories but that’s why I developed the system at the beginning listing most of the major opponents on slides so when we get to the rating era you will see the same kind of slides except rated
Fighters 11 are in Brackets after the name so you can look at the list and and see who the rated Fighters were but I wanted to more match them properly to what the rated Fighters do accounting for the major opponents they thought who would be rated that’s the point of those
Initial slides to give a rough total you know um of major fights they had better for mixing and matching against fighters from the pre- rating to the rating era but anyway on to our next slide okay um Joe Gans had 21 World title fights uh this incredibly talented Champion went
16 wins four lost one draw he made 15 title defenses and Joe Gans scored 11 title fight knockouts now Gans fought for the world lightweight title so he had 21 unified fights 164 And1 record and the same 15 title defenses now obviously in the rating era we’ll get
The ratings there but Gans is preting ER so he has no wins against top 10 top three all ring Champions but okay wins against champions in title fights Joan scored four he also scored two wins against Hall of famous in title fights and Gans also scored six wins against
Pound-for-pound rated fighters in title fights so on we go these videos are monstrous and they’re going to get more monstrous when we add more stuff in Rosen Bloom’s video I have to tell you is just pure insanity and on the um Facebook page okay my Now new dedicated
Facebook page boxing librarian um I’m going to go through a year-by-year breakdown of rose and Bloom um just to highlight here U not everything not all the starts but just a basic breakdown of year to year on individual posts just to highlight what an incredible career that figh had so pound-for-pound ratings now
Gans was pound-for-pound top 10 rated for nine years he is my pound for pound number one rated fighter 19909 following the pound pound number one of the 1890s George Dixon uh the pound pound number one uh for the decade of the 1910s is Sam Langford the pound
Pound number for 1920 is Harry greb and I could go on but I’m not giving them all it but Gans was pound pound rated for 9 years incredible he was also a pound pound top three rated for five years and Joe Gans was a pound pound number one
Rated fighter in three individual years and he scores a large total of 65 ring rating points now ganza highlighted beat nine pound pound rated Fighters individually from his incredible record of 18 win nine loss n draw now against pound pound Pound top three Fighters he had 10 fights going two win four loss
Four draw and against pound pound number one r Fighters Joe Gans had five fights um scored him one win two loss two draw so some incredible numbers there on his pound for pound rankings for Gans now when we look at titles Joe Gans twice held the world lightweight title
Um it was lineal Champion also thus twice at lightweight and he twice held the Undisputed lightweight championship and he was one of boxing’s legendary figur Joan a master boxer uh you know who would use faints counter punch movement combine all the above together you know when you add in there slotting
In hard knockout punches leading opponents into traps sometimes he’d use two three four faints each faint he’d reposition his feet and then deliver sharp knockout punches to knock people out he were an incredible master and I’m not surprised that legendary Fighters like Benny Leonard due inspiration um
From Fighters like Joe Gans because in his time he was you know really a pioneer of what we’ call Modern boxing uh in a way you know mixing and matching Styles it could be aggressive and fight he could box defensively he could box on the move it could combine the three you
Know incredible fighter Joe Gans was so let us go on to the rating slide our final slide now Joe Gans ranks in my all-time rankings of over 1,200 Fighters at 16th Place now in the title record top 50 Joe gan’s race as having the 13th greatest title record of all time um he
Also rates in the pound for pound record top 50 again just outside the top 10 as having the 11th greatest pound-for-pound record of all time and these are obvious is Joe Gans um um enshrined into the boxing librarian Hall of Fame that is a resounding yes and Joe Gans also easily
Qualified um through the criteria into the boxing librarian Hall of alltime greats two lists that you can find on individual pages on my website uh where I did an initial list you know I’ll now make deduction or additions as I release the videos to bring them fully up to
Date with my thoughts um and Joe gans’s rate is rated as the 13th greatest American boxer of all time and that is born okay the rating by country is always where you were born now to me you know Joe Gans is a legendary figure in boxing fought multiple alltime greats
Fought multiple dangerous contenders um of his time um you know like even including hollly Steve Crosby ja blackburns he fought many fighters who were often avoided by many of the fighters but Joe Gans fought a number of them um as did Sam Langford did so you
Know a bit like the black Murderers Row and Fighters like arim Mo when you are fighting the avoided Fighters as well as the rated Fighters I mean you have a depth of resume you know you don’t really have to answer questions if you fight the the chunk of the rated
Fighters but then you fight the other Fighters that not many people want to fight you know that to me is the mark of an all-time great so there is Joe gza’s video um like I’ve said I’ve started each playlist off lford at heavy Jack O’Brien at light heavy ketchel at middle uh the
Barbados demon at welterweight now joans at lightweight next tomorrow coming is the featherweight division opening okay that’s the legendary little Hebrew Abell who has an insane resume and some insane STS himself um and then we’re starting with Harry Harris down at Bantam way um and then the seven divisions I’m
Covering in this era are open um obviously goes to well 10 divisions 11 divisions sorry in the next year because of super bantom super feather light well and flyweight of course um to add so it’ll jump to 11 divisions although the intermediate divisions will not get as
Many fighters added uh but it will be a St on those divisions as well and other divisions will be added in as we go through the eras 10 to 30 1930 to 1950 1950 to 1970 um as the intermediate divisions comeing the first Fighters will appear on those playlists but yeah
I can’t wait to get to it next era to also start doing the full um video breakdowns including the chos against raid Fighters the rankings The Raid opponents all the other great starts that we’re going to include um but yeah these videos are certainly much more stat heavy than the blue screens
And with a nice concise breakdown of major opponents for at the start and I’m looking forward to doing many many more hundreds as I’m heading from 1890 right through to this time it’s going to take me a few years um but we will get there over time but I hope you enjoyed this
Breakdown of one of to me the second um greatest lightweight of all time I’m constantly revising my ratings my top four lightweights I have at the minute based on lightweight work I have Benny Leonard number one I have Joan number two I have Ike Williams number three I
Have Roberto Jan number four obviously all time that can change a bit because janas all that additional work um Middle Light Middle Welter Etc um but that is my current four lightweights as I have them Benny Leonard Gans Williams and then Jan um and then after that you’ve got a
Whole Myriad of other Fighters you know from kener um to ERS to Armstrong I mean the the names just go on perel whiter Etc um but yeah joean certainly to me deserves his number two spot at the moment in my alltime personal um lightweight rankings what a Legendary
Legendary fight it was so thank you for listening to this video shout out to everyone in the live chat like I’ve said I’m sorry I don’t go through the live chat I am going to be doing a big live stream soon when I do normal live stream
All of course fully interact with live chat as normal um but as I’ve said before I’m doing these videos this way by live stream so I have to really focus on the video instead of recording it then saving it then uploading it I’ve done the video now I’m finished I can
Crack on with Ren Bloom’s file you know I don’t need to do anything else so that’s why I’m doing them this way so to everyone in the live chat big shout out hope you are all well um whoever’s there hope you’ve enjoyed this breakdown of Joe Gans and tomorrow comes a another
Equally great fighter from that same period um another Contender for the pound pound number one spot of 19909 the legendary um Abe atel the great featherweight King so watch out for more videos coming um next week I’ll have my next St video coming that is a mighty St
Match up on Sam Langford and Harry greb matched against each other um so that’s going to be a St match up not to miss that will be coming um into the week but yes Abel coming tomorrow I’m the boxing librarian a number down and hundreds and hundreds more to come I’m out for
Now

One of the very greatest ever! Gans makes it inside my personal top 15 P4P ATG.
Another favorite of mine I learned about from you. Thanks, BL!
Thank you very much for this great history, I wish today's fighters learn history of these Real All Times
I’m enjoying concise style of the new videos. I’m retaining a lot of information. I once saw Bert Sugar claim that Joe Gans invented the jab. Is that true? I also heard that Dave Holly is the inventor of the Philly Shell. Is that true? I would enjoy a Dave Holly career video. Salute💯
