Easy all right so Tuesday LSU was on the practice field we’re less than two weeks away from the relia quest Bowl LSU Wisconsin New Year’s Day down in Tampa and uh Tigers had their first media availability media viewing for blll practice and as you might imagine I

Think when everybody went to the indoor facility today and the media that was present was allowed to watch at the indoor facility on the catwalk up at the top uh we were all looking primarily at okay um who’s here who’s not right which would suggest who is going to play in

This game and who has opted out and I think everybody also wanted to look at Garett nus get his shot to be the guy and that’s where most of the focus was but picked up a lot of tidbits so let me go through some of these notes uh that scribbled down if you’re

Wondering about the the attendance the guys who we’ve been wondering you know would they be out there at practice would they not um by and large they all were Logan Diggs was at practice Malik neighbors as he said he would be was that practice uh Brian Thomas Mason Smith Jacobian

Gillery Harold Perkins all the guys are all out there at practice um two players of interest that also so practiced maai Wingo who shut it down more than a month ago to have to have surgery on that knee he’s out there full pads running through all the drills no

Limitations so maai wingo’s a go and Sage Ryan was also out at practice today uh now we have seen some reports that Sage Ryan is electing not to enter the portal remember over the weekend uh this it wasn’t reported Sage Ryan posted on his social media that he was entering the transfer portal

So this wasn’t some um speculative report like s Ryan put it on his social media that he was entering the portal we talked about it on Monday show here but if you missed what happened on Monday de caman Richardson one of the guys that LSU was really targeting in uh

In the portal quarterback from Mississippi State picked Old Miss so LSU really in need of quarterback in that spot so they apparently went s Ryan and said hey why don’t you stay and uh apparently he’s willing to do that so s Ryan looks like he’s staying at LSU um couple of other

Things uh that of note obviously the quarterbacks Garrett nosm took all the reps with the ones Ricky Collins was out there and then you had the the Walk-Ons behind them we uh when we got out there they were running individual drills so just their you know their sort of

Warm-up drill at the indoor facility with their position coaches uh when they went team defense it was all the starters that you would expect uh your Corners were stamps and Toano uh your safeties were Andre Sam and major Burns everything else exactly as you would expect oia gofu and Savon Jones Warrior

NS Mason Smith and Jordan Jefferson were your your interior linemen and it was uh Greg Penn and Omar Spates as your linebackers with Harold playing that uh that off ball role that sort of Rover role so that was your first team uh defense your offense was all the same we

Did see a lot of run today actually for Trey Holly at running back which was kind of interesting I’ll tell you uh Chris Hilton had himself a day and if I’m I’m not going to overreact to one practice but especially you know a bowl practice in in late December when next

Season is a ways away nobody could guard Chris hilt today we know he’s got wheels he looks like he has really developed throughout the course of this year and was probably buried on the depth chart as a product of having two first round draft picks at the top of the list and

Then Kiren Lacy a fourthe player but man Chris Hilton looked really good today um I was interested in how the twos would look as well uh and Sage Ryan was running at one corner Jeremiah Hughes was running at the other um you know we saw some rotation at safety

With Ryan Gates back there um West and wit weeks were your were your inside backers so a lot of what we’d seen then we got to see the team go um go oneson ones in uh in in the scrimmage portion of the drill and so it was a first

Offense against First Defense and I charted the plays they ran 10 plays and I’ll um nus got six and then uh Ricky Collins got four so I’ll just they ran a screen to Trey Holly beautiful play tfl by by uh Greg Penn they ran Trey Holly again for four yards Perkins and Penn

Made the stop they ran a screen past to Malik neighbors um on the fourth play they went deep down the right sideline and nus Meer had Brian Thomas open he underthrew it and Ashton stamps had an interception that he just dropped as he went to the sideline it was uh one of

The things with nus that you worry about his decision- making threw a ball in a d double coverage and should have been picked they ran the the shovel pass to Aaron Anderson on the The Sweep motion for about three yards they ran a 15 yard Crosser to Malik neighbors so that was

Your your offense with the um with the ones as the twos went out there um the the second offensive line struggled uh Ricky Collins got hit as he threw on the first pass they ran a bootleg was caught by uh by Kyle Parker they a running play with Trey Holly and

Then a sack so the especially the twos the defense kind of had a day the um a couple other things let’s see after they went back to individuals just some things of note obviously Pete Jenkins is still out there working with the defensive line as is John

Jansi um we saw the linebackers working on coverage drills Brian Kelly spent a lot of his time with the with the defense particular the defensive backs during the portions that we got to watch especially when the defense was going against the scout team offense um I

There was one drill and I mean this is not going to surprise anybody at all the nature that it went but they they had the one-on-one drill so the quarterback was throwing to the so it was receiver on DB one-on-one he had a quarterback standing in the middle of

The field the receiver was running the route I charted 16 routes and the receivers won 14 of the 16 I don’t think that that’s going to surprise anybody um nus did Miss uh Kyle Parker on a deep ball um over threw him deep had him wide

Open he threw a beautiful deep ball for a touchdown to uh to Jaylen Brown a deep Corner route touchdown um Shelton Samson looked really good as well Sam I I tell you the what’s so evident when you watch the route running the ability of all these

Guys um is Samson and and Hilton are the guys that really seem to be popping like you there there things that are a given right like you know what you have obviously in Mal League neighbors and Brian Thomas you know Kiren Lacy is like

The next guy up there so what what was I think most interesting is okay who are the guys after the ones that are given that start to pop and keep in mind like the media got to watch practice during fall camp but we don’t get to see

Practice at all during the season so a lot of This Is Us seeing them work for the first time since late August and it’s just very obvious those two guys Chris Hilton and Shelton Samson among the receivers really really stood out today so you know your second offensive line I did chart that

Um know what happened in here somewhere hang on it’s in here somewhere oh here it is so Ben bordon was your uh uh bo bordon excuse me was your your starting left tackle and they went Kimo macanoli DJ Chester was your uh your Center Lance herd was your uh was your

Right tackle and then 71 Was Your Right Guard forgive me I don’t have a roster so I didn’t write down who 71 was but uh that was Your Right Guard so good day of work for LSU we got to watch about 45 minutes of it inside and then they went

Outside and um and we did not get to watch the rest there it is signing day tomorrow so Brian Kelly will meet with reporters on on Wednesday to recap signing day and I’m sure we’ll be able to ask some questions about the bowl preparation as well and then uh Thursday

They’re back on the practice field and there’s more media available ility on Thursday so we’ll get to watch practice again and kind of give you an update as to how it’s going so Tigers Tyree Adams by the way is 71 so the Freshman from St a Tyree Adams was the second team Right

Guard out there on um on Tuesday so uh we’ll continue to keep an eye on LSU as they get ready for um uh for the ri Quest Bowl against Wisconsin again media availability the next week is Christmas and they take off for uh for Tampa to continue their preparation all the bowl

Chris alive who did not practice uh well they didn’t have practice Monday but it would have been a it it was a a hypothetical um report as if there were going to be a practice today was just a walk through so um similar uh situation as it was just a walkthrough today on

Tuesday but but uh Chris alve who was a dnp on Monday was limited today on Tuesday I I think that’s significant obviously you got Rasheed Shahed back this past week you’re not going to have Michael Thomas you didn’t have to use or overuse Tamm Hill on Sunday as well I

Think this is a game against the Rams defense where you are going to have to go and and score I mean I I don’t want to State the obvious I mean you have to score I guess my point is like I don’t think this is going to be the type of

Game like you played against Carolina you know I don’t think you’re looking at a a low-scoring game where your defense on a short week is able to to sty the Rams offense um this is a Rams offense that is uh top 10 in the NFL they’re

Ninth in the NFL at 23 points per game and uh you know a team that you know they scored 28 this last week against the commanders they put up 31 points and a loss to the Ravens they scored 36 against the Browns 37 against the Cardinals my point is they can score and

I think the Saints are going to have to be able to keep pace so yes I want Chris alve out there and I’ll say it again I I don’t know this definitively but I think part of the reason you didn’t play aive Sunday against the

Giants was so as not to rush him back against an opponent you figured you could you’d have a better chance of beating anyway to have a better chance of having a la ready to go this Thursday short week in La against the Rams um look at Dennis all ought about the the

Challenge of preparing to play the Rams here on a short week I think they do some good things defensively they play really hard they play really aggressive um and then you know offensively I think you know Shawn McVey does as good a job offensively as any any coach in our

League in terms of just uh being able to package plays together Rams like the Saints are seven and seven so you got a couple of teams here that are you know look the the ners uh are running away you know have um at 11 and three uh are have already clinched and

Uh are vying for the number one overall seed um and they’ve clinched that division so you know when you look at the at the the playoff spots the Rams right now have the tiebreaker as the seven seed as the last team in the NFC playoffs as

That last wild card so we’re focusing so heavily on the Saints winning the division and yes I mean that’s obviously going to be your easiest path to the playoffs but it’s not altogether impossible I mean clearly uh to be able to make the playoffs as maybe that last

Wild card team is the Vikings the Rams the Seahawks the Saints are all sitting there right now at 7 and seven now Tampa 7 and seven as well but they have the highberger they’re leading the division so really Tampa Ram Seattle uh Saints F uh Saints are all sitting there at 7 and

S so five teams right now in the NFC playoff race are at 500 and are likely all going to be vying for that last wild card spot so uh giant significance this weekend for both the divisional race and a potential Wild Card race with h the

Grant date or you know whatever sort of letter that ties them in with the school for them to be able to transfer in and it allows the school to announce it so yes the three portal guys I presume to all be announced tomorrow by the school

At the same time as the high school guys because um just from speaking resources and the kids all of them have Inked those um you know different papers they have to sign that aren’t like you do coming out of high school with you know high school scholarship papers but

They’ve done the necessary stuff to say hey we’re in we’re official uh we’ve gone through compliance all that kind of stuff and uh yes then 27 uh total uh 26 high school kids won Joo uh but that is the window starting on Wednesday running until Friday a three-day early signing

Period and Matt if you’ve got a table there knock on it um it appears we are in for a drama free Signing Day for LSU which is um boy for me I’ll take it uh but I think for the LSU staff and uh fans you’ll take it as well the all 27

We know these guys we’re involved this isn’t a kid that’s up in somewhere on the East Coast that we really don’t know what all is going on here at the very end in terms of what teams could have had in home visits that we didn’t know

About or stuff like that um Shay how uh how did they I mean you’re surprised by it I think we’re all surpris if you follow recruiting it’s just seldom that you ever have a a year like this where there’s just like you said not going with no drama how did this staff get

Assemble a class that is so committed and where they’re not even taking any visits by this point I think that they just got into a point Brian Kelly you know you can’t talk on it until they’re all signed but he made the point yesterday when we went

Soured on when you heard that he was committed to the Aggies the fact that they flipped him was really big news and I think maybe I only listed four but there was a fifth in there uh that they also flipped oh CJ Jackson a top 100

Edge rusher out of the Atlanta area who was committed to Georgia Tech but he was going to end up going somewhere bigger than that and he ended up visiting LSU first after scheduling a bunch of visits and then immediately shut it down and said all right I’m in which kind of made

Up for that early Chase for Colin Simmons you get another top 100 type guy in Jackson so I uh again I I like this CL I think they filled a lot of good needs here couple more for you shay um let’s talk about two players as we kind

Number 15 uh this after Sage Ryan over the weekend had announced he was entering the transfer portal and and and the news now is that uh Sage is remaining with the program there’s a couple of things here so first of all to reiterate I would never say

Shouldn’t Say Never I think it’s hard to argue that losing a player with three years of experience um is a is a good thing especially where you’re you’re thin and it’s a position of need and you weren’t very good this year the other thing with sage Ryan

Is he is in large part his time at LSU um I hate to use the word victim because that is such a negative connotation and I don’t mean it that way way but but I’ll I’ll use it and hopefully you’ll understand what I mean uh he is a victim of of recruiting of

Expectations um that stem from recruiting rankings he was a five star everyone knew it when you see a five star come into a program there’s always this sort of increased expectation on that guy right or wrong that’s what it is and S dryan spent his first year

Largely injured at LSU and then as a sophomore he backed up Greg Brooks at nickel and let’s be very honest when Greg Brooks left and Sage Ryan went into the game there was a notable drop off it’s why Greg Brooks was starting and then this year s Ryan

In a year where LSU was very thin in the defensive back field and really struggled that’s a guy that did everything that they asked he played nickel he played dime he played outside corner he played Safety played all over the field um and he didn’t have a he didn’t have a great great

Year but there’s something to be said for guys who stay and develop and get better and you are allowed to improve see Jaden Daniels who was a really good player in 2018 or excuse me was a really good player in 2022 and then became the Heisman Trophy winner and had an

Historic season in 2023 Joe burrow in 2018 was very similar um I’m not siten there telling you s Ryan next year would be like a defensive player of the year a Thor award candidate or anything like that but could he improve yes and it’s a guy

Played in 30 games and um he had a lot of production over his time at LSU so when s Ryan was was leaving I wasn’t necessarily going to argue that it was a good thing because it’s not good to lose a guy that has that much production that much

Experience but you need to be better in the secondary and he was part of a very bad secondary this year that’s also undeniable well now he’s announced he’s coming back and a big part of why Sage Ryan is returning is because of what happened on Tuesday night if you missed

It uh D caman Richardson is a player from the state of Louisiana who spent his college career at Mississippi State and LSU got a visit and then after he left LSU he visited Auburn and then he visited Old Miss and he committed Old Miss so D camri and

Richardson kid from Louisiana who LSU desperately wanted now is not coming to LSU so LSU found itself in need of a experienced defensive back and they had one on the roster so they went to Sage Ryan and were like hey man we’d really love for you to stay and so he is

Um if you ask me right now who would I rather play have playing Corner next year for LSU to Cameron Richardson or S Ryan that’s not even a question it’s Richardson eight days a week I mean he’s a better player and Richardson is one of those long rangey

Quarterbacks you 6’ three started all 12 games this this year at Mississippi State he’s played a ton of football and that Old Miss staff has really reworked their defense I mean they have added not just players in the portal but starting caliber players Richardson um Tavon Nicholson from

Illinois uh key Lawrence a safety from Oklahoma uh Lewis Moore safety from Indiana a defensive end princ Ley uman Meen from Florida who had 11 and a half tackles for loss and seven sacks this season one of the best Edge rushers in the portal they are the favorite to get

Walter Nolan the number one player in the portal interior defensive line from Texas A&M who many people don’t know is from Ali Branch Mississippi originally and this is an opportunity to get closer to home and it’s likely where he’s going to end up the point is there’s two ways of looking at this

Year from Ohio State was injured in Fall Camp he’ll be healthy maybe he could be a dude don’t know Z Alexander who tore his ACL right before the end of the first half against Army they’re expecting he’s going to rehab that ACL come back maybe the combination of JK Johnson Z Alexander really

Good but do you really want to count on two dudes coming off of season ending injuries playing at an allconference caliber level that’s that’s not a great option I’m not saying it can happen but it’s not a great option and you’ve got Ashton stamps and Javin toiano and Jeremiah Hughes some of those

Route that one of the coaches on the other team after the game came up to me and said the way he layered it so it’s not just 100 miles an hour like he did I thought the poor kid was going to have to get a trainer I actually yelled out

Give me a trainer I thought the kid’s chest was caved in on the practice field well he throws about a ball that just drops in on on about an 18 to 22 yard sail route and it was a perfect throw that kept the drive alive so the touch

Is there but he can ramp it up to 100 miles an hour if needed but it was his poison presence big like I said and he’s got some he’s got some sneaky uh escapability because he made a move put his foot in the ground and cut back and

Got us 30 yards in the game too he’s got a real good presence for a kid who hasn’t seen a lot of football at 16 and yes the the classify he’s only he’s not going to be 17 till March um but physically you will never have the guy

Can throw it he’s he’s going to continue to mature he’s big enough he’s really really physically gifted at his age but it was his presence and the way he handled the Huddle knowing that we were going to have to throw damn near every down because they jumped out and scored

Like in four straight possessions and boom boom boom overcome adversity huge arm really good touch and then he also hit the three ball dropped a couple into the uh end of the bucket on a deep route and then we ran a naked down by the goal
