Since the alignment of NHL teams into conferences, there have only been two instances in history of the prior two Stanley Cup champions playing each other in a conference matchup.
This is the story of the first.

  1. That video description better be foreshadowing for the second matchup between two prior Stanley Cup champions. That matchup was the final before the final.

  2. 3:21 man i do not remember the forward lines being that barron. Marchant as our 2c is brutal. guess thats why this year is kind of lost in my memories lol. Miss watching prime getzlaf-perry-ryan. and Franzen was a frickin horse.

  3. Fantastic video, if you take requests may i suggest:

    2000 NHL Western Conference Quarter-Finals

San Jose Sharks defeat St. Louis Blues 4-3

  4. What is it with naughts SCP series being literally some of the best damn hockey games ever? You could make a Hollywood movie about one series almost every year.

  5. I'd like to see you do a video on the 2011 series between the Red Wings and the Sharks, a 7 game series where every game was decided by 1 goal (except for game 6, which was decided by 2 goals because of an empty netter).

  6. My suggestions:
2014 LA vs SJ (the Kings tear the C off of Thornton's jersey)
2009 WSH vs NYR (Ovechkin gets his first playoff series win in style)
2000 SJ vs STL (probably the most stacked Blues team of all time loses in first round)
2007 VAN vs DAL (the longest Stanley Cup playoff series of all time in terms of minutes played I believe)
1990 EDM vs ARI (Jets finally put Oilers on the brink but still choke, Oilers walk away as Champions)
1989 LA vs EDM (Gretzky's revenge, Oilers blow a 3-1 series lead)
1986 CGY vs EDM (the only time Flames won the BoA in the playoffs and it went seven)

  7. credit to osgood for learning a totally different style of play to stay in the league. its still weird to me seeing him as butterfly goalie

  8. This is still my favorite era of hockey. The legends late in their career, as well as the new crop of talent. The unique gear. The grit. The level of skill exploding post lockout. I especially love how clumsy the goaltending looks in comparison to modern day.

  9. Really love this series. Here’s a few ideas for the next one: NYI/PIT ‘93, MTL/WSH ‘10, LAK/COL ‘01, CGY/TB ‘04.

  10. Cleary's goal in 2023 would have been a coach's challenge for sure, but would have counted and (ah, hate that rule), the Wings probably would've iced it sooner on the powerplay.

  11. this is some of the best quality hockey content ive seen. this is the depth of THG and the contextual emphasis of a trade tree, keep up the great work

  12. Still those two finals between pens and red wings were something special. Anyone remember how everyone made fun of hossa for losing in back to back years? Man the talent in those finals

  13. With the tremendous rise of sports video essays, it's good to see the void for hockey content is finally being filled.

  14. Great video! As a lifelong Wings fan I’ll never forget watching this series my junior year of college. My roommate and best friend was a huge Pens fan and we both knew our teams were destined for a SCFs rematch. It was even more bitter for Pens fans due to the whole Hossa situation. Great memories and unforgettable series in both ‘08/‘09.

  15. I’ll never get over that last goal. I was 7 years old but it’s the first hockey memory that I have where I felt robbed of something

  16. I've never seen that replay of Neidermayer elbowing Datsyuk. wow. 16 years later and I'm pissed off all over again. Definitely will now always remember Neidermayer for being a cheap shot bitch on this "play".

  17. It's interesting how Anaheim went from a team that almost always clutched up in the playoffs for one decade, and then has a 4 year run of blowing 3-2 series leads with home ice the next.

  18. this is so illegally good that i almost…. don't want you to get more subscribers? i want the hidden gem to continue feeling special.. i guess? but then again its so good that there's no way in hell that'll happen, amazing stuff though.

  19. Tough to see Franzen be such a game changing talent and knowing the whole time he was being harassed and bullied by that loser Babcock

  20. Pinholes, id love for you to go back and re watch the 2008 Red wings vs Colorado Avalanche series in witch Johan Franzen quietly had one of the greatest playoff performances in recent history. On the NHL records page amid many NHL legends, At number 4, Sits Johan Franzen for the 4th most goals in a single playoff series with 9 in 4 games. The next closest modern era player is Sidney Crosby 08-09 vs the caps where he scored 8 goals….. in 7 games.

  21. I watched this and my only thought today was the same then.

Revenge for 07. If we dont beat them here, it justifies the post-whistle thugging, beating up, and crap in a hole bitch cheeseing that Anaheim got away with.

The wings won, the bitches walked.
