Awesome work lads. The 3 Wood shaft vs driver shaft has been a confusing thing for me. Thanks for the clarification!
Outside of this testing environment, when you're out on the course trying to shoot your lowest score you want to reduce your variables to the least amount possible. For the casual golfer that doesn't play as frequently this is great because the feels are similar. For the better golfer or one that plays more frequently they don't need reminding "hey my 3 wood the tip will be stiffer do I need to close the face more?, do I need to swing more aggressively?". It's totally up to the golfer's feels and how much they want to think on the course under pressure.
I know ultimately you should get fit, but if you live in a more rural place that doesn’t have walls of aftermarket shafts, is the driver shaft you like a reasonable place to start for three wood? What about hybrid or driving iron?
Thank you for this example, do you have time to do like-wise with other brand shafts? i know there a re a lot of variables but a mid handicapper test would be great for us "Bum golfers" (that sounds wrong?) Try your best lads. You have opened the worm can again.lol
It might have been stated and I missed it, but we’re the fairway shafts all 6X’s, same as the driver 6X, or did you step them up to 7X’s?
Really neat to see that the results aren’t always so straight forward. Makes you wonder if you should go back to the driver and check the red and black as well to see how yardage spacing works with those against the three in the fairway wood. Lots to digest here.
just a quick reminder for everyone out there. The Ventus Red is by no means a “high” launching shaft. It is high launch relative to the rest of the Ventus Line Up. It’s more of a mid launch shaft
Great video, nice to see the comparison and the results of these shafts on my want list.
Love this video! Any thoughts on shaft weight? Typical one weight class up in 3/4 wood but I noticed I do better with same weight as driver. Is this something you have seen in fits?
For future tests can you guys substitute the black ball tracer for white? Much easier to see the white against the black background of the tracer chart. 😅
My fitting at TXG a month ago came to 3 different heads with 2 different shafts (3 & 5 shafts are the same)
Ian's description that the softer flex tip section on the Red kicks the club head further out and further forward was incredibly helpful. In order to center the strike on my hybrids and and woods, I have to stand slightly further away from the ball than I do with my irons…even though all of them are custom-fit for lie angle and shaft length. It is nice to finally understand the physics of why this change of my address position is necessary. Thank you for sharing your expertise on the channel so generously!
Spot on guys, thank you. Exactly what I needed for some decision making!
I actually went the other way. I bought a 7 wood of all things and unbelievable how easy it is to hit a high draw. It has the Red Ventus in it. I have the Blue in my 3 wood and love it. Now I want to put a Red into my driver. Currently have the Diamana Dialed mid kick shaft. Like it but not even close to as good of flight and feel as the Red Ventus in the 7 wood.
Great vlog, very interesting! Fit fit fit! 👍
I play the Ventus TR Black 6S tipped 0.5” in my G430 LST driver, and the Ventus TR Red 6S tipped 0.75” in my PXG 0311X Gen 4 7 wood. Need the lower launch and spin off my driver, and the higher launch in the 7W to land them nice and soft from 210-220 yards out.
Great video guys, I recently had a fitting for a new 3 wood shaft. Long story short, Tsi2 with Tensei blue shaft. Thought I was you average joe, SS 96mph with the 3 wood so mid launch mid spin shaft blah blah blah. Just wasn’t getting what I though I should out of it. So went and got fit for new shaft, at fitting discovered (fitters info) I have a slow/smooth tempo but a harsh transition. So the softer tipped shafts Tensei blue/VA slay we’re just getting left behind, blocks left and duck hooks with no spin (leftie). Fitter changed it up, stuck a Diamana DF in and boom. Spin jumped from mid 2000s to mid 3’s. As confidence grew, so did swing speed. Ended up maxing out at 103mph with spin @ 3700. So we decide to go for the DF in stuff but tipped to make it play a little more stiff then stiff.
My absolute favourite club now, next on list is the get a retro fit on Driver shaft as have a Va Baddazz fitted in that and feel there’s more to be got with the new swing info.
Any suggestions guys?
fitted for Blue in driver and GAPR and red in 3 wood, seem to work for me
I have the Mitsubishi Tensei white shafts, is there a difference between Blue and White? I thought it was just cosmetics.
This is the reason TaylorMade put the Ventus Red back into the the Stealth woods this year, specifically the 3 wood. The masses just hit them better. I was fitted into blue for my driver and red into 3w and 3h.
nine if my shafts match. yet they all produce great shots and long shots and left shots and then a right shot then one inches from the cup. weird it's like women. I don't understand them either
I play the Ventus TR Blue (6R, tipped 1/2”) in my driver, and just recently put a Ventus TR Red (7S, untipped) in my 4 wood. I was formerly playing a 77 gram stiff shaft with a very similar profile to the Ventus TR Blue in the same 4 wood, and I definitely prefer the Ventus TR Red in that fairway wood. I get the ball flight that I prefer (mid-high flight with a hair more backspin and about 10 yards more carry) with that Ventus TR Red 7S. From off of a tee, I would be happy with either shaft, or a Ventus Blue, in my 4 wood, but from the fairway on par 5 holes the higher flight with more backspin that I get with that TR Red is certainly welcome to give me a softer landing shot with less run-out.
I've always been a proponent of using the same shaft and flex in drivers and fairways, just the next weight up for the fairways….regarding the Ventus shafts, I was fit into Blue for my current driver purchase but wasn't offered Red during my fitting which I'm spewing about now, because the Red is so much better for me
I love the Ventus Blue in my FW woods. Only other comment to the video is to not use black tracer, tough to see the ballflight between the other two on the grid view.
I have Ventus Red 5 S in Driver, what do you think I should play in the 3 wood?
I play matching Cobra S9-1M driver and fairway woods with the same Adila DVS shafts. I love the same bend profile and kick point which I feel keeps my swing more consistent.
Great video. I play a Ventus Black 6TX in driver. Have been happy with it and It’s not that easy for me to go get a quality fit like y’all offer.
So, I just paired it with an 8TX in my 3w and 5w. I am happy with the setup but this just makes me want to really experiment more and find somewhere to test out other stuff!
Great video, I think this highlights the choice at a fitting really well. The red was the stand out performer, but was it the best fit in relation to driver? The red might win on a launch monitor, but the blue would offer more versatility and be better on the course.
Did a TM fitting and was floored in trying to fit for a fairway. Couldn’t get an ADDI airborne, but the Ventus Black was so much easier to launch for me
No logic to that based on the brochure characteristics – but just worked
Amazing
How much does that
If I play a 67 Gram driver shaft would it make sense to play the same weight in 3 wood and 5 wood?
Very impressive data!
Quick question. Should I have the same stiffness of shaft in my irons as my Driver and fairway metals?
These guys are the best. I’ve learned so much about equipment watching this channel
Great information!
Surprising result…, can't assume anything with shafts.
Great video. I have the Ventus Red TR in the driver, loved it, so I put it in the 3 and 5 fairway with same specs/weight and it's perfect for me/my swing.
As an average golfer it's hard for me to spend another $350 (might as well say $400 after tip, grip, and tax) to match my 3 to the Velocore Red that's in my driver. Mostly due to the fact I may only use it a couple times in a round. Once I stopped thinking I'm a pro that can putt for eagle on every par 5 and started playing to a distance has been the best stroke saver for me.
I also find it interesting the hundreds of videos about drivers and shafts, but I don't see many pop up about putter fitting. You know, that club you scream at and costs you the most strokes in a round.
I have the opposite issue, love the shaft in my fairway wood and can't find a driver shaft. I get it, professional fitting helps but with all the makes and models of shafts available it's a never ending problem. It's the feel of the shaft that can't be quantified and that I haven't come close to finding.
Some say it’s mostly better that you go with the same flex, but 10g heavier on the wood. But I agree with you. Definitely no problem if you put same shaft on the driver and the fairway wood.
Can anyone explain why a player like Min Woo Lee would have a Ventus red in his driver then go to the Ventus blue in a 3wood?
This is a great video. I just had a fitting and learned my shafts are not stiff enough. I'm going to get a new driver, FW and probably a hybrid and was wondering about this.
