How to AIM THE PUTTER like Phil Mickelson

Phil Mickelson has played in over 1000 pro-ams and he hasn’t seen one amature golfer close to being aimed at the correct putting line. Putter face alignment is the most critical element in putting. All that matters is the alignment at impact. Phil demonstrates how he can make a beautiful putting stroke, but if the putter face angle is left open or closed the ball will travel in the direction of the putter face. Where the putter face is the single most important part in putting. Phil Mickelson practices putter face alignment with a device called the putting tutor, which he helped develop. It has a line down the plate and when he places the putter face up against the straight edge on the back of the device he gets instant visual feedback on where the face is actually aimed to. Phil Mickelson puts a golf tee on the putting line next to the cup that he wants the ball to travel on to drop into the hole. Phil then points the device at that golf tee so when he sets up to the device he knows exactly where his putter club face is aimed. Everytime Phil Mickelson places his club face up against the back edge, Phil is training his eyes to look at the golf tee. This trains his body, shoulders, and feet so he can look at the golf tee and know where his club face is aimed everytime he sets up to putt. Phil Mickelson then demonstrates how speed can be learned on the device. Phil Mickelson putts a ball with too much and too little power through the device. The device proves that nothing was wrong with face alignment and stroke: showing only the speed of the putt is what was at fault. A good putter must identify what’s causing them to miss putts. You must train your eyes, body, face alignment, and touch to feel the proper speed. Phil Mickelson practices with this device before every round of golf. This is how Phil Mickelson trains his eyes to see proper alignment to his target. This is how Phil Mickelson can learn how to read greens at any golf course before he plays. This is what allows Phil Mickelson to putt consistently every week on tour with varying green speeds.
