Posture is key!!! Here’s PGA golfer Anders Albertson on planks. Rounded shoulders & upper back is a very common mistake on many exercises including planks. Focus on proper posture on all movements.
Yes, Posture is that important. Regardless of what anyone in the fitness industry tells you posture definitely matters.
Without proper posture it’s literally impossible to do any exercise correctly. Not only does proper posture set the foundation for proper joint stacking & alignment throughout the entire kinetic chain but it also optimizes neural signaling & neuromuscular efficiency. Think of the spine as your signaling highway. If your spinal alignment is off, you’re short-circuiting or jamming those signals thereby impeding optimal muscle activation & motor unit recruitment.
With that said, proper posture including on planks means shoulders down & back, stomach in, hips back/tall, tall head, and elongated spine. That means no shoulder or upper back rounding.
Just remember the higher the forces involved, the more important posture becomes. When you’re chilling or in a relaxed state, proper posture is not nearly as important. So don’t be overly obsessed about your sitting or chilling, or laying down posture.
Instead focus on your posture during your training sessions as well as periodic posture activation drills throughout the day & then let those drills create neuromuscular re-education where your body naturally defaults to optimal posture without having to over-think about it. Being mindful of posture throughout the day can be important but who wants to be consumed with thinking about posture 24/7? That’s why we train so it re-wires our nervous system to function optimally even when we’re not thinking about it.

I always thought it was like a push up but on your elbows
The plank targets primarily the abdominal muscles which work the posterior chain bending the body slightly inwards into a concentric position.
So by introducing "perfect posture" the straight back and stretched pecks are preventing the isometric contraction of the abs…
Doesn't make sense to me
