As a Wings fan.. I have an unrealistic dream that next summer, Yzerman will sign Matthews. With the lottery luck Detroit got during their rebuild, they really need to steal a star like that.
He gave them a window to win. They couldn't capitalize on it in the playoffs for years, now that window is closing
What we need to talk about is how Arizona coyote tampering back in 2017 hand cuffed the leafs in 2023…
Good
I always thought that team was a direct extension of that soy boy, goat latte sipping looking dude Dumbas 😂 What kind of clueless clown is giving out damn near $12M/per to 21 year olds(McDavid only exception)?? Like don't you know what happens next contract?? You're f*cked😂
Matthews is not remotely the player Matthew Tkachuk is. If they give him anything over $10M they are overpaying for Matthews. Dubas was an idiot to lock up $40M in 4 players. No worries though, the leafs will continue to sell out and fail in the playoffs. Some things never change 😉
Don’t blame Dubas!!! Shanahan has always been the one in control!!!!
Kyle Dubas is a slick talking salesman; he was fortunate that Shanahan put him in the spotlight with not a lot of experience as an NHL gm and it shows how he bungled up the salaries paid to Matthews, Marner and Tavares. Now Nylander wants a piece of the pie and it seems like this is turning into a silly situation for only winning one round in the playoffs since they all have been on the Leafs.
Kyle Dubas screwed the leafs large when he uttered we can and we will!
Matthews is a top 3 player in the league? I must have missed the memo. He's not even top 10 pts leader when adjusting his 74 regular season games production over 82 games!
The most hilarious part is people still think he’s a genius
Yes he overpaid these guys far to much money. Players need to be recognized by playoff experience before the big money and that wasn't done here. After all you can have all the awards the NHL has to offer but the one most important is the Stanley Cup!!!
Problem with Matthew’s is he’s always hurt, every playoff’s his excuse is his hand hurts, shoulder issues. Big risk giving him 14 mill
This is not a shock. People were saying this since the Tavares signing. Nylander can ask for 11 million because tavares makes 11 million. I thought they brought in Tavares to be their top salary. Unfortunately Matthews became the first line center so he got more way too early. . Matthews will be asking for 14 or 15. Matthews is a top 20 player. He is not the second best player in the league which is the argument made in Toronto. He is not a top three player
But who made Dubas sign tavares? Lamorello was still around and did Shanahan make them sign Tavares? Thats your villain.
They should have spent money on a defender. Maybe Pietrangelo for $8.8.
TRade Matthews IDC how but if he's paid 13 million let him go
If Matthews wanted to win cup he would take pay cut he would have to work harder in playoffs to be paid big
Dubas was basically another Bergevin IMO.
If it were me yes he performed in reglar season but if he wants 13 million prove by winning us leafs a cup be more aggressive and wanting it
The real handcuff is the Tavares contract.Way too much. They should have re-signed Kadri and used the difference to try to land a top four D.
I'm tired of the core four.
I feel sorry for Pittsburgh,
I don’t have a clue how Dubas landed such a high paying position based on the history of his transactions over the past half dozen years…
He’s literally made 4 or 5 good transactions over that time span and screwed up a hundred of them.
it would take a 3 hour video to go through the moves that put the leafs in a bad spot.
Dubas believed he was smarter than the rest of the league. His idea was a high octane offence would win a lot of games and that defence was not really important with a puck possession strategy. He was absolutely correct. Dubas paid players to put up fancy points and the Core 4 delivered great regular season success. The owners of the Leafs, MLSE, approved of this approach and offered him a contract extension due to the team's 5 year performance.
Nylander, Matthews and Marner know that they will be paid at the top end of the pay grid because they are providing the owners what they want. At least 44 sell-out games every year and exciting on ice performance is guaranteed with the the Core 4.
Playoffs are for fans not for a corporation.
😂😂😂😂 dubas screwed them 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
As you can tell by my picture he’s been my favourite player since he entered the league in 2016. If I was to guess I think he will take a bit less this time and sign a shorter term deal, let’s say 4 year extension with an AAV of $12,634000. Time will tell! 👍🤘
He is a scorer, that is all he is. If that is what you value as a "top 3" player, then fine. If you value a more rounded player who puts up fewer points but is more well rounded, or defencemen, or goalies, then is Matthews is a top 10 player in the league? Top 15 I am sure, and top 10 if you just value goals and points. He has proven time and time again, that when he gets leaned on, like in the playoffs, he hasn't shown the testicular fortitude required to lead a team. He will get his $13 or $14 million a year, and he will get his points. But will he win in the playoffs?
To be fair, those big contracts were signed when the salary cap was expected to have significant growth over the nexr season, or so. Then the pandemic happened, and the NHL shutdown, cutting revenues, causing the league to lock the cap, for a few years.
Also, until Matthews starts showing up for the playoffs, you won't see him get paid as much as he could. Over his career, he's 1.13 points per game, in the playoffs, that drops to .88. McDavid's career average is 1.49 ppg, his playoff average is 1.53. McKinnon's career ppg average is 1.07, his playoff average is 1.30. Kucherov's averages are both 1.13 ppg. Draisatl's career ppg is 1.17, and his playoff average is 1.57 ppg. Even Crosby and Malkin, both of whom are well into the down side of their careers are over 1.0+ ppg in the playoffs.
Don't get me wrong, Matthews will get paid as much as he wants, but he's not built for the playoffs. For example, during the Florida series, there is, practically, a line fight going on, big scrum, and what's Auston do? Does he grab a partner to hold onto…nope, he goes around picking up sticks, showing his line mates that he's not in it with them.
Paying Matthews more than McDavid doesn't make sence at all. It's like paying full price and getting only half full package since McDavid did douple points than Matthews.
Of course Dubas handcuffed the Leafs. Vegas didn't have a Matthews, Marner, Nylander or Tavares playing for them yet somehow they still managed to win the Stanley Cup. Same for Colorado and Tampa Bay in previous years.
Most players seem to want +10mil instead of a cup, nice.
I hope he gets a big contract with his hometown team – Arizona (or is it Phoenix now?).
Shanaplan 🎪
Dubas = Chuck Fletcher Jr
Matthews was far from top 3 players in the league this season, I don't know who said that but he's delusional
Be specific, which team exactly has the cash to sign Matthews' contract, besides their remaining players?? I don't think there is. In fact, with the volume of spending by managers and the players, who could take on that kind of contract without serious pain?
Thank you Kyle! 😃😁
Dubas is a fantastic salesman, but a horribly inept GM. After inheriting young stars with great potential, he destroyed the Leafs. I fully expect him to do the same to Pittsburgh.
Yes, Matthews has a far wiorse playoff stat record than McDavid and MacKinnon did at the same age.
It started with the signing of Tavares, when the Leafs were the 3rd Highest Scoring team in the NHL. Then Not trading Nylander in the Fall of 2018 when he had a chance at a True#1 D man. It wouldn’t matter paying Mathews and Marner what they got if the first two items never and did happen.
so many leafs fans crying in the comments lol
toronto being jealous of pittsburgh, nothing new lol
matthews is far from top 3 player in the league lmao maybe in the far top 10 and thats not including playoff
they should trade him
🤣NOT the 3rd best player in the League, NOT in the Top 5 either and there is a debate for Top 10. Talented player during the regular season, but a ghost when comes the playoffs.
McDavid, Draisaitl, Kucherov, Mackinnon, M. Tkachuk are ALL better than him and in my opinion there are players like: Rantanen & Pastrnak that I would also put infront of him.
Stop whining all of you
Matthews likely.will get his $14 million, also I'm guessing Willie is going to be sent packing, something seemingly has to be done with the goal tending situation, after all this I just don't see the Leafs winning the cup in 2024
This was obvious before the ink was dry on that contract…
Matthews is the greediest player in the league no question
I think the NTC is a joke. Teams should have control to move players at any time to make the team better.
