I had my first golf lesson in years, with Josh Salmon (https://www.instagram.com/upstreamcoaching/) at Royal North Devon. We made small changes that created big changes.

It looked like a very good lesson with all the modern equipment
Well done Rob, always enjoy your content and delivery, the change was evident to see. I always feel the first thing I want to do in a lesson is impress, then reality kicks in, so the delivery of the coach being "in touch" with the needs and is key, people learn different ways so regularity of lessons/ coaching is probably the key (said the bloke who hasn't had a lesson for years 😉) Look forward to an update
Really enjoyed this video Rob, not too technical, look forward to seeing your improvement 👍
My golf coach got me doing this exact same thing. Only for me I didn't have the rest of the movement to make use of it . But clearly it is the optimal take away.
Great video. What did the instructor mean by take the club back strong on the takeaway?
Looking good Rob👍Amazing how getting to the root cause of your problems can set off a chain reaction of improvement through the rest of the swing. So common for it to be the clubface being open or closed and your brain telling your body to make compensations to deal with that. This guy really seemed tuned into your way of learning. Lessons you’ve had in the past have been really technical at times which didn’t seem to sit well with you and left you searching for positions but ultimately not really understanding why. Do yourself a favour and stick with this guy!! Make sure you get another lesson organised soon, even if you’re absolutely striping it. This is how you go about learning about YOUR swing and tendencies and how to self correct when you do have days when things go pear shaped on the course. Good luck 👍
Rob, I remember watching the no look golf swing. It was mad to watch. Never tried it, but was great to see
Your swing looks good, always has. Your arms are similar to Hogan at the top but you have a more flying elbow which is fine and natural to you. Unlike Hogan, you have zero "flattening" of the club head arc, you want to have the club head at the top to go rearward (back side) as it's first move, in other words club head goes behind your back and then down if you are looking with the same camera view as in your above video. Your club head goes to the top, and as first move, does the opposite, actually goes forward to your front in the swing @21:26. Maybe you have ingrained that taking the club head directly to the ball from the top is a good thing, but it is actually too steep for consistency. Your turn and arm drop looks good. Just the arms, MHO are fired too early in your swing to get the "flattening". Watch how Hogan flattens his arc, https://youtu.be/LKcxxTkysgc?t=57 your swing looks very similar to his, and that is a compliment. Easier said than done but you need to flatten the arc, could be as simple as delaying the arms for a quarter of a second at transition and that will seem like an eternity. Sorry for the long write up. Another thing..Look at Hogan's lead shoulder after impact compared to yours, he is doing something thru his swing but you can see the difference after impact, very few notice.
Isn’t it amazing how the body seems to know exactly what to do to hit the ball when you deliberately change something in your swing. That’s why swing data is a game changer when working on your swing. You change one small thing and it affects many parameters. Great video Rob
Great video mate! Why is this sport so bloody hard 😂
Seems like a good teacher. I still feel your swing is already pretty solid. I think you and the rest of us would do better focusing on getting short game/ mental lessons. But that's not as fun as hitting the ball a mile. Lol.
Piece of advice. Big changes take years of beating 1000 s of balls. Good luck
Great video Rob.. having travelled a similar path over the last 20 years " investigating" the golf swing through books, videos, lessons with lots of different pros.. it's more than complex to discover the secrets of a golf swing that might fit me like a glove.. the first book I ever read was the swing factory .. and as a beginner back then with lots of enthusiasm I replicated the basic swing in that book ( wrist in all the way etc) to a point that whatever else I tried to modify inevitably I find comfort in going back to it.. because when I go to the course under pressure it makes me feel like I've a chance of doing ok with it.. all the new swings I learned eventually broke down.. through my own fault probably.. all the pros told me the swing factory swing was outdated, had no levers, and lacked distance.. which is true.. but after 20 years of searching for something else I now settle on the fact that I'll never be on tour, and that devoting any spare time I have to chipping and putting will probably be the best outcome, together with the old fashioned swing I have.. and a demeanour that whatever happens in a comp or game won't make me unhappy..
if I am playing well or not I just go for a 50 mile run another day to iron out the creases in the head..
having said all that I still love watching films of tuition.. because I still hope there's a magic bullet I'm missing somewhere..💙
I always find the hardest thing with a new coach is convincing them that you actually know what the numbers on the launch monitor mean 🤣. Great video 👍
I've fixed my club face in a similar way and my path has completely changed. Really good fix
What a great lesson – simplicity is the key for me as well and similar solutions are working for me, keep at it – practice is unfortunately the next step!
I'm on a similar journey, more body rotation, less arms & flippyness. It's brought my ball flight down, added distance, given me more consistent shots, the bad is now playable not on a road somewhere. Having regular check ins with the same coach is the key to building the understanding & trust in the message.
Could you use this swing idea with driver ?
Very interesting and enjoyable.
Wow, that take away was exactly what I was working on last year and it served me really well. But what do ya know…..In my last session with my coach he wasn't too keen on it……albeit for a good reason (it seems). I'm happy to try the new move (quitening the hands) but it'll need some work…🤣.
I think you need to find someone local you can trust….. I've been working with the same coach for over a year, he's easy to reach and gives me good clear messages. I tend to have a 30 min session with him every 2-3 months when I feel something needs tweaking. We've got to a point where I understand what he's trying to get me to do and then I go away and work on it….The process takes time and I feel like I need time to assimilate the changes. I think you and I are on similar paths, take away the marathons, low single figures looking to improve and shoot par regularly (or now and again 😉). Looking forward to see how you get on (no pressure 😂😂😂).
Last year whilst experimenting I went from a strong grip with the toe up at first parallel to a neutral grip and toe down (like this video) and it felt so much better.
I played lots of cricket and the idea of rotating the club face to square it up at impact was at odds with playing a straight drive during which the bat would be square to target back and through.
Initially everything went left as a strong grip and toe down makes the club point miles left, so I weakened it off and bingo.
👍Need to practice that Tommy Fleetwood 'hold off' look!
Enjoyed this, Pro was very good, and changed things subtly to improve your swing. Interestingly, you are still flipping the club open on the way back, but because your brain believes differently, the drill made you do all the good work with the body anyway. Pro gets top marks, hope you continue working with him 👍
Stay away from.zen golf as well …work with a pro near you and use one pro to learn 👌
One of my favorite channels.
Shelling some eggs ⛳️
Hows it all going Rob? Hope you're well and the golf is good!
