In this JustDisc clip (courtesy of Jomezpro), we ask if it’s time to redesign the disc golf basket? During the first round of the 2023 Preserve Championship, there were a minimum of 2 instances where perfect putts ended up going through the chains. This seems to be happening more and more, and it’s costing professional disc golfers some much-needed strokes. Where do you stand on this issue? Should we be looking into redesigning the disc golf basket or is this type of issue inevitable?

  1. I feel like I see more spit outs happen on baskets with horizontal chains connected between the vertical chains. If you watch closely in this vid, the disc hits chains and turns sideways while about to fall DOWN. But then it hits the horizontal chains and rides them like a Plinko game and spits out.

  2. There is no reason why baskets could not be designed a lot better. They have been this design since the '90s that I remember. Takes credibility away from the sport.

  3. If the baskets were standardized across the tour, it should all be level playing field. If you putt on hyzer (Garrett Gurthie etc) and your putter slides through the chains more than others, change your release. I do think all of them should be standardized, whatever the basket may look like

  4. Better for the game if it’s not easy and this happens like 5-10%/100 I’d bet.

  5. less hyzer brothers – our course has prodigy as well – I found this to happen at times.. but I really found it to be my problem not the chains.

  6. The prodigy design could work if the inside chains were heavier but, they just don't slow down the disk enough as is. The outer chains should grab the disk and the inner chains should stop it.

  7. Those chains are just not heavy enough. My main course I play in my area is a very old course and has heavier chains because I guess that’s what they used but it sticks like glue. The chains in these videos look like they are made of thin cheap material

  8. chain weight and thickness needs to be standardized. Also, they need to make those squares smaller than a disc lol

  9. Happens. Just like in golf, balls lip out sometimes. I’ve seen one drop and pop out before. Those are the breaks unfortunately

  10. Yeah, I really don't understand the 'making putting harder' thought process. On a windy day, I don't think anybody is excited about three and four putting on hole after hole (or watching coverage of it).

And I would not be an advocate of changing out baskets all over the country either.

You've basically got some salesman for these companies pushing this idea in disc golf because there is the potential for a huge windfall for them if hundreds, if not thousands and thousands of new basket purchases are required.

If we want to replace some of the inner chains, fine, but let's not get crazy.

Big potential waste of money and waste to the environment.

  11. If there was to be a standard design, then the governing body (PDGA) would probably need to purchase the patent design and then make that design available to all basket manufacturers to avoid a basket monopoly by one company.

  12. It’s part of the game. I had a putt today hit left side of chain in the middle, drop to the basket, and jump out of the basket. Heartbreaker but it is what it is

  13. The inventor of the basket started a company that still makes the best baskets today. All pro tour and major events should be contractually obligated to use DGA Mach X only

  14. There should be a person inside the chains of the basket to grab the discs and put them in

  15. May be controversial but I think when you putt as hard as modern pros do there should be the possibility for spit outs. It’s part of the game and always has been. In basketball you have to learn how to finish soft. You can’t putt as hard as you want it ball golf and expect it to stick. Why should Disc Golf be any different?

  16. No. just time to never use those garbage prodigy baskets on any course anywhere ever for the rest of time. They are so bad

  17. I bought a basket for $50 new that has cross chains that dont let a disc through. Those baskets are obviously garbage. They just need to get a different brand that knows how to make baskets

  18. Honestly I think the bottom part should be bigger so spit out just aren’t a thing or change the rules to just hitting chains counts as a complete hole
