Paul McBeth is a mainstay of the most elite of professional play for the disc golf pro tour. But as of late, his play has fallen a little bit and players like Simon Lizotte, Calvin Heimburg, and Gannon Buhr are picking it up. What are we to make of this and what does it mean for him as we enter this European swing and United States disc golf hiatus.

Aside from World’s what did Paul do last year, that’s right pretty much nothing. So comparing last season to this season is ridiculous.
This has to be the worst take ever. You say he’s playing just as good yet he’s ranked 9th and has zero top five and 1 top ten. We aren’t talking about any player , you are talking about top 1 or 2 player in the world just last season. I would say something is really going on with his game and maybe look at this objectively and not as a fan boy.
Big mistake pIayin' EUR0PE ,, His game and name is G0NNA SUFFER
I think you nailed it. He has A LOT on his plate. 6X world championships, is impressive. I think he has bigger aspirations for Disc golf and has and continues to contribute the advancement of the sport. I fully support him in that endeavor.
So many ready to claim that Paul has sunken to a new low in terms of where he stands on tournament wins within the last year to date. it's gotten to the point that if Paul was not on the lead or chase card, then his playing skills have diminished to where he barely cracks the money line. This time say 4-5 years ago, both Paul and Paige Pierce were the dominate players in the MPO and FPO. Fast forward to 2023, the level of competition has caught up and vastly improving, which is a good thing for the PDGA overall. The young talented players have made their strides and making a name for themselves. Paige just won last week, though Tattar was not in that tournament, which I personally feel that Tattar is the top FPO currently. As for Paul, he'll be back soon on the podium and get first place wins this year. Though not stringing one after another as yesteryear. The young bucks are making their presence felt, and that is good all around. Even Tiger Woods was once considered unbeatable, though we know in time the new bloods will surface and bump him off the mountain top. Paul has helped tremendously grow the game of disc golf, and his tournament play will result in some wins, though not as dominate as once before. Father time giveth and taketh away.

Money… it's money. Don't overthink it. Money provides opportunity, and he is still the face of disc golf. His moment is fading, but he has brilliantly capitalized. He's Paul Mcbeth, …but (tongue in cheek), have you seen Gannon Buhr? That kid is what's up. He will shatter Paul's stats.
I agree with your take. As people age, they take on new roles and responsibilities, naturally. I am sure Paul doesn’t want to put 100% of his energy into winning tournaments, and trying to make small improvements to his form, and would rather be working as an ambassador and helping to grow the sport in ways that only he can.
Every year people say Paul has fallen off and every year he finishes top 5 in points, usually with a major championship or two. In fact he's never finished outside the top 5 since the tours inception in 2016. Currently he sits at 9th gasp while supposedly not playing very good golf? The competition on tour may be at an all time high, but Paul is still one of the most consistent players out there. The season is still young. If Paul just keeps chugging along the wins will come and he'll be in the top 5 once again by the end of the season.
When he is coming down that back 9 in the final rd of Worlds… this video will be pointless.
His presence in the lead cards haven't been there often. But he's doing his part to grow the sport. Paul will always be the mcbeast. And if it wasn't for him the game wouldn't be nearly as big as it is. It's Paul
All I can think about is Paul challenging Ken Climo. Basically a, "where you at"?
Paul is cementing his legacy and doing it the right way. The days of him being 50pts better than everyone else are over and that's ok. Hes going down as the GOAT and making sure of it.
I’ve also heard of a course in Tuscaloosa that he is supposed to be designing. Could just be a local rumor though.
You lost me when you said discraft has him working so hard that it's affecting his play. Do youbreally think they would allow that paying him 1m a year?also, you say it is because other new players are using new techniques and he isn't. That's the definition of "washed out."
If you want my sub, do better than being a fan boi
He's flying around the world in between tournaments to grow the sport of disc golf. I think everyone's just getting better.
He's taking the dub at Konopisté Open for sure. I am surprised more big names aren't playing there unless there is a silver event I missed the same weekend.
great analysis
I feel like the skill creep is real and more people have contracts that afford them the time to hustle as hard. That said, I could also see an aspect of the video game trope applied to real-life of doing the min-maxed try-hard grind for so long, beating every level, hitting the top, and then just wanting to actually go back, turn the graphics up, framerate-be-damned, and play the beautiful game.
Sounds like a very tough thing for McBeth "You are not getting worse, your stats is the same – but everyone else just gets better". Because that means that he has even more to do with improving his game – than just getting back in shape.

Let's not forget that course design has come a long way since Macbeth's first world championship. Every major on tour now tries to add an element of pressure to 75% of the holes regarding the green alone. Not so long ago we played courses where there were seven holes that were 500 ft flat ground par threes with no difficulty on the Green. Nowadays course design seems to try and pay respect to all facets of competitive players, meaning controlling disc angle and speed coming into greens, designating specific landing zones, and giving options to conservative plays that provide a viable reward because they are making it so that throwing 575 ft doesn't automatically land you an eagle anymore. And if we look at the stats for most majors anywhere in the last 10 years, the winner has typically had the best stats on the putting green and obe strokes mitigated
While i agree with all the points you made and i think it all adds up you never addressed the elephant in the room "Money". Its long been an issue with top athletes of any sport that get the money and loose the hunger. Now i'm not saying this is the only reason Paul is not getting results like he has in past seasons i do believe it plays a massive part.
Paul's mother in law passed away within the last couple weeks as well so I can imagine this has a whole seasons worth of emotions leading up to the season and during also.
These reflections makes me real happy for Paul.
He's choosing what is important for him, growing the sport, trying new things. And still having statistics.
How come paul has not been in tournaments lately
I look forward to seeing Paul sticking around in the top 10 and then putting the pedal down at worlds. The competition is improving, lots more full time pros & he is still one of the most consistent golfers out there
There is one part of Pauls game that has gone down. Pauls mental game is not as strong as it use to be. You can see it in his putting. He used to step up and know that he was going to make the put. Now he is more tentative on his puts. Many things impact your mental game. Age, marriage, work, and your own perspective. I hope he figures this out and works on getting his mental game back.
Why did Paul skip the west coast swing?
He’s transitioning
Multiple reasons
He’s getting older so his best years are behind him
Rest of competition gets better every year with more players capable of winning
Nothing else to prove and putting more time into growing sport which is really growing his brand. He’ll probably come out with a tour to compete with DGPT in a few years.
Probably not practicing as much and is definitely not as focused – he was in contention at Vegas, Waco and Austin but had very sloppy finishes. He tends to take big numbers on easy holes. Always been an issue for him but occurs more often now.
Despite that he still will likely be on lead card late into worlds and European open (which often has a weak field). And can win usdgc as well. Majors are still important to him.
I think he is passed his prime but that doesnt mean he isnt a dangerous player. Especially when its a world championship on the line
🐐
When you've won every tournament that matters multiple times, it's only natural that you would look to the next thing. He's proven everything there is to prove. Now it's time to help grow the game.
I think everyone else is just catching up. The tournaments are paying a lot more money and people have significant incentive to become better while he may have peaked. Just the nature of the game growing.
In Europe he starts in Estonia.
It's an age thing
Everyone has just gotten better. That’s it!
