I was fitted for Ping i230's a few weeks back and am a higher handicapper. I went in looking for either the g430 irons or the i230's , and the fitter said that if I'm getting out more and trying to improve, the i230's would be great. I don't always hit them pure but I am able to comfortably and consistently break 100 now, with my best score being a 91. I'm happy with them, but at this stage i'd probably be better with the g430's, but I am improving. Let me know your thoughts everyone
I've been playing a year and moved from the Callaway XR's in regular shafts to P770's in stiff. They're not as forgiving but have far more control over distance and shot shape.
Great video James. The point of the video was to answer the question, “Are you using the right clubs”? If I was on the production / content crew, I would have had your mate playing each shot twice and allowing him to take the best shot rather than giving him a stroke a hole. The second shot each time would have been played with a game improvement iron. It would not take too many holes to determine if the game improvement irons were helping with two shots hit from the exact same position. It may not work for you as a PGA professional doing a review because you could play with a broomstick and a shovel. But for a mid to high handicapper, the results might be substantially different and really showcase how much the modern technology can enhance one’s play and enjoyment of the game.
right now i game a 3 & 4 cleveland hybrid, and 5 thru SW is cobra ltdx one length irons and these irons have helped me to become more consistent and confident. i use the hybrids because they are easier to swing and get the distance i should be getting from those clubs. with the cobra irons, i don't use the 5 iron because the loft is the same as my 4 hybrid. So i only bag the 6 thru wedges. But using these irons have made the game fun for me.. my distances are better ( yes the lofts are stronger ) but it's helped me play the game better. my bad shots still happen, but not as often.
As a former club maker who still sometimes builds his own equipment I think if you can afford a fitting and build then do it, but right now I’m playing OEM TaylorMade Burner Plus Irons (4i – Pw) with 2023 Tommy Armour 845 wedges (52.56.60). Odyssey OG Series two ball putter, Cobra Rad Speed LD driver set at 9* loft draw and a TaylorMade 2007 Burner 3 wood 15* loft draw. The most important thing in playing golf is be comfortable with what you bring to the game to play. I’ve changed putters 4x’s this year.
Hi James! Play to a 11 and just purchased the Callaway Paradym Irons 5-PW with a lighter UST Recoil shaft. I still have my Mizuno 919 Hot Metal Pros with SteelFiber shafts in the trunk of my car, as I still like the feel of the Mizuno iron but I hit the Paradym irons with less dispersion (more greens in reg)
Yes and no. First , i love your content James. I've been playing golf since 1961 and have been a single digit handicap most of that time and still have a set of Wilson staff blades from 1967 that i take out to the course from time to time and they hit just beautifully (even the 3 iron). I also play a set of Macgregor M685 irons with rifle shafts that also hit beautifully and a set of Honma tr20P irons that also hit beautifully ….. If you have a pretty good swing i dont think it matters too much so long as the irons dont have much offset, the lie is set correctly for you and you have the right shaft for you… Cherrs 🙂
I play 3-P in the Miura MB101 with an X stiff steel fiber shaft. Fitted in to them over a year ago and I love them! I’m about a 6 handicap but my weakness is my short game and occasional wild drive. I always say get fit into the club your good at striking. “High handicaps” may strike irons well and struggle in other areas!
Whereas I get wanting to play with beautiful clubs like the mizunos it would totally spoil my golf day constantly mis-hitting them. A good walk spoilt as they say. I play pxg. I love looks , feel and they are forgiving as.
I have cavity back improvement clubs, probably 12 years old. I bought them when I was on 27 and starting out, injured my back when I got down to 12, only played a dozen or so games a year for several years and got back to 20, playing every week now, only in the comp but in six months back to 15 and coming down, I can't see myself even looking at new clubs. I love these things, I think as long as you like what you can do with them….. why change.
I like a thin top line and next to no offset so i love my blades. And when i tested them against my old cavities the difference in forgiveness wasn't enough to make me stick with the cavities. (Was initially thinking I'd keep the 3 – 4 or 5 in the cavities)
Played titleist 712 mbs before but dont have the time to practice like before so changed to TM 790/770 comboset and that helps me to still play on my handicap! My handicap is around 1. More fun to hit good shots than thin short once!
James, I currently play custom fitted Sub 70 699 pro irons. I used to play Bombtech beginner cavity backs. Hated the turf interaction. Everything is Much better being fitted. Keep up the great work, James. Cheers!
It's a myth about cavity backs v blades. Both need to be hit out of the middle to get the most out of them. A poor strike is a poor strike whatever the club type.
never been fitted. Golfing 5 years . 18.5 handicap I play the 2021 Cobra King MIM Tours KBS Tour 120 S flex 5-AW(50*). 7 iron is about 180 yard club in normal spring/summer weather . . Cobra Rad Speed 9 degree driver 110 mph swing speed Hazrd Smoke yellow stiff shaft 60gram. Cobra LTDx 4 Hybrid, Callaway Epic 3 hybrid, Callaway Epic Speed 3 wood , Wedges are 2022 Cobra MIM Wedges 54 and 60 degree. Usualy use a premium ball AVX, PRo V1, X Tp5/TP5x, Snell MTB X, Maxfli Tour x CG, etc… no consistent ball yet.
using Taylormade Rocketballz Irons, 5-AW as my first set as a 24 handicap, good feel and go straight half the time cant complain. Would like to be fit into a more players iron for my next set.
I use Adams Idea A3 that I bought used 10 years ago. I bought them because they were cheap. I hate them but I'm poor. I had a fitting last year, now I'm saving up for some Ping G425s.
I have MP20’s and I’m off 19! Slightly misleading opening statement as mine are HMB’s and I absolutely love them. I have gamed them since they came out so that must be 4 years or more and I haven’t considered changing them. Lad I play with bangs Wilson Staffs and they are strong AF with all sorts of forgiveness and to be honest, I don’t think I’d swap and he’s 9 shots better than me. I guess it’s a case of finding what you love and sticking with it
I play an new old stock set of Snake Eyes 600B blades with S300 shafts. I'm getting back into the game after 12 years off. I used to be just above scratch. Right now I'm a 15 but getting better every day. My only problem isn't about striking the ball solid, but it's about having too much draw. I'm drawing about 10 yards, but my 7 iron goes about 175. I'm not used to the draw except on my driver. That's the main reason I'm still in double digits (that and my putting needs to be better)
I don't really agree with the notion that clubs suit certain golfers. If you have sound technique, you will play well with any clubs. I still use game improvement irons from 1998 and I regularly shoot under par.

Another great vid, thanks. Currently playing TaylorMade P790's 5 – A, and they were fitted for me, love the look, feel and performance of them

James, can I show you how to putt, I am a 20 Handicap 😉

Dude in the cart is killin me. 😂
Titleist 670… love the look. Feel is awesome about 10%of the time when it’s flushed. Should have a more forgiving set for sure.

The clubs are rarely wrong, whereas, the player is almost always wrong. 😉
Think you need a new putter james😂😂😂😂

I am still playing my Mizuno MP 37 and i also have a set of AP2 712…

Great to see fan favorite Liam on the channel but just not the same with out the Liam shank appearance 😂

Mizuno JPX HM Pro 921 stiff 120
I was fitted for them last fall and love them.

Keep up the great work, James. Cheers!
I use ping i525. Started playing again after 30 year break, wish I’d seen the Takomo irons because I’d of bought them in heartbeat
I play with the Sub 70 699 pro irons with KBS Max shafts. Love them.
It's a myth about cavity backs v blades. Both need to be hit out of the middle to get the most out of them. A poor strike is a poor strike whatever the club type.
I use taylor made burner irons with bubble shafts just started playing again after a long time
Gaming 1996 titleist dci irons hand me downs from the old man to get me into the game 👍
Mizuno Jpx921 forged. Fitted for them and now brand loyal. Brilliant clubs.

Would love to see a video of you getting Liam into some new/used clubs that you pick out for him with some launch monitor and/or on course feedback.
If that was bad golf with the wrong irons I would take it every time.
The moment at 4:34 one fat bloke to another fat bloke, watched by yet another fat bloke "what bounce have you got?" lol
I use Adams Idea A3 that I bought used 10 years ago. I bought them because they were cheap. I hate them but I'm poor. I had a fitting last year, now I'm saving up for some Ping G425s.
I’m a little late James but I was fitted for and play Ping I 59 irons, and I absolutely love them.
I have MP20’s and I’m off 19! Slightly misleading opening statement as mine are HMB’s and I absolutely love them. Ironically Mp-20 SEL as it was the only MP option for lefties. I was fitted for them and I LOVE them.
