This all sounds great for an iron shot, do you also do this with your driver? How much distance are you giving up on your drive?
I feel like the same way about this like I used to go as far back as i could for more distance but a half to 3/4 swing is better for me and I can get better control on my shots.
Does a shorter swing = an easier(less physical energy expended) swing?
Being a bit more broad shouldered and less flexible, I just find it difficult to get that far around. Being right eye dominant, I also lose sight of the ball with a big back swing.
I recently tried the full swing and it feels great, goes higher and a bit longer, but, and it's a big but, I could not control my aim. It would go off line left and then right and rarely where I wanted it to go. I'm 70 and still in good shape. So, I returned to a shorter swing. And, my aim is much, much better. Better control, still get height and distance. I'd rather be 20 yards shorter but in the fairway than digging through 6 inches of grass off line.
If I try to lengthen my swing, my sequence gets out of wack & contact is less than consistently ideal because I get armsy from trying to hit the ball to hard. The only time my swing feels really connected & I'm swinging well is with wedges because I don't have to hit them far but as soon as I go to a longer club to hit it farther, I lose my rhythm & swing too hard & can't keep my arms soft.
Good and very illustrative video. Sounded a bit funny when you said "If you have problems with your swing, get yourself a rope", if you know what I mean 😀
Russell, every one of these videos is really good. Most consistently useful content on YT. ❤
Brilliant! Thanks
Thanks!
Growing up playing baseball and tennis a short backswing make sense to me. I struggle to hit the ball consistently in the fairway when trying to turn to far in the backswing. I just needed to hear from someone like you telling me it’s ok to use a shorter backswing. 👍
Russell, thanks for this. As an older person my swing will likely get shorter over time, so this is insightful.
Let’s talk driver please. I feel like I’ve got the proper rotation down with my irons. But I am struggling doing the same rotation with my driver. Please help.
Hi Russell, could you please make a video about club head speed. How to gain the speed, where's it coming from and the reasons to not having enough club head speed?
I would like to hear more about golfing with a shorter backswing.
