I'm going with the majority here. I saw their last Stanley cup win, on TV that is in real time. Sick & tired of seeing over paid so called skilled players that can't & won't physically defend themselves who turn their cheeks & smile while being thrown around like rag dolls. Get a ransom for 2 of the 4. Tavares will be gone in 2 yrs, there's another $11mil to get a captain as close to Wendal Clark as u can buy. G out
It is Travares contract that is causing problems not Matthews.
Depth and defense is what it takes to win in the playoffs. Firing on all cylinders at the right time helps a lot to (Florida). All the marquee players have very little room to work their magic in the playoffs because of how hounded they are by the defense. Some find a way anyways (Patty Kane) but those players have it in them.
Please get rid of Mathews. His playoff performance has been terrible every year they've been in them. Get something for him while its still possible and who knows next year.
Not a Leafs fan. And I've never been a 'fan' of Matthews' arrogant selfish show-off goal celebrations. And NO WAY a player who never kills a penalty should ever have been chosen as league MVP, even if he'd scored EIGHTY goals. But that said, he is not the problem with the Leafs…and neither is Marner or Nylander. The problem is the 11 mill Tavares contract. The guy is a wet sock as a captain…which should have been immediately obvious the moment he left his teammates and management on the Islanders high-and-dry because he used to wear Leafs' pajamas. His interviews as Leafs' captain are the most uninspiring, cliché-ridden, lame fodder ever. It's cartoonish. He's produced okay…at maybe a 6 or 7 mill salary. But geeezzz could the Leafs ever use that extra 5 mill to exchange someone like Holl for a real stud D-man, or someone like Samsonov for a truly elite goalie. And if there was any way they could just dump Tavares altogether, and give the 'C' to Morgan Rielly or even Matthews or Marner to run with…THEN they might be an actual serious contender for the Cup. But fake 'leader' Tavares and his ridiculous contract is simply killing your team, and has been from the moment he arrived.
Move TAVARES, strengthen your team
IF they want to get better…move him out, along with Fancy Stat Dubas and shanaPLAN Shanahan.
Matthews “ wanting “ to stay in Toronto shouldn’t even be a topic of conversation. He’s not stupid but almost comes across as sinister as he knows that Dubas and the Leafs are the only ones stupid enough to pay him what he wants. If marner , matthews, Taveras are serious about winning a cup then take a pay cut and get a couple players on the roster with grit and heart to go with their softness and finess.

Pretty hard to justify a contract of that proportion. There is no doubt Matthews is a skilled player. Worth more than Nate MacKinnon? I seriously doubt it. Overpaying flashy players with good stats in the regular season at the expense of creating a well rounded team is how the Leafs landed here in the first place.
He must b a great 👍 golfer he has plenty of time obviously. Sign him long term do the league a favor.

I still say Keefe made a mistake, not playing O'Reilly on his wing. Matthews/Marner need a tough , skilled player on the wing. Matthews spent more time in the corners than anyone. Marner needs to toughen uo during the summer. He looked afraid of contact both series
Generational? Are you high? Matthews is basically a rich man’s version of Dino Ciccarelli. Dino was nothing overly special, puts up a lot of goals in the regular season and wins nothing in the playoffs. Does that sound like Matthews to you?
