Max Homa responded to media questions at the Arnold Palmer Invitational including how much influence LIV Golf may have had in the major changes the PGA Tour just announced
Monahan conceded that PGA's changes are the direct result of LIV's expensive signing bonuses and purses for even the losers all the way down to last place. LIV will only ever have 48 places and has a $2Billion backer. PGA begins with 120-140 players and relies on media for it's main source of revenue it simply can't afford to pay the same places, even after the cut takes the field down to 60-80. Even so, Monahan has to create a higher level of play (to keep fans watching) in order to justify the higher purses.
What the changes will do, per his memo to the players, is create season-long challenges that requires players compete at higher levels thru out the year in order to play for those higher purse events. To understand it you really need to read the new format found in his memo sent to all tour players. Monihan's changes create a more distinct difference in fan experience for LIV. LIV only requires each player make each event unless they've been given permission to miss. LIV's regular season begins in February and ends in November with only 14 events. PGA's regular season begins in September and ends in August with 34 events (just in the US excluding majors). Given the disparity in the scope and frequency of each league I understand why OWGR requires 2 years history of play so it can properly assess the extent of competition and quality of field before giving rankings to a new league.
One thing the US Tour should never be forgiven for is knowingly maiming the other world tours over a long period, such that they are now just feeder tours for the US tour, resulting in only Americans being able to see the best players. It wasn't like that before, with legends of the game playing all over the world on many different tours. Thats why LIV is great..it will bring top class pro golf to the world.
