This week, Tessa Virtue joined other Canadian Olympians by sending a letter to the Canadian Olympic Committee, which had previously supported the IOC’s position on the admission of Russian athletes in a neutral status, and urged not to allow the Russians to compete. Marina Zoueva was contacted and played political chess, while Tatiana Tarasova angered many by equating the letter to the murder of Tessa’s fellow friends and competitors. Irina Viner was banned by the FIG while her (ex) husband pressured Russians to be allowed back in fencing. Eteri Tutberidze and Alexander Lakernik are attempting to create a global club skating organization and other countries are pushing back. Meanwhile, Les Supremes Junior was in line to win the 2023 Junior Synchro Worlds until a major error in the free skate. Of course, no one saw it because the ISU moved their stream behind a paywall. We discuss all of it on the latest edition of ‘This and That’.

Happy Sunday! Thank you for the early upload ❤
When I think of the Russian Ban, I don't associate it with any wars. To me it was about clean sport. Russia has documentaries dedicated to their history of cheating and doping across many different sport disciplines, not just figure skating.
Happy Sunday, everyone! 🙂
thank you Dave and Jonathan for another entertaining “This and that” ❤️
It was very telling who did NOT have their names on that letter from the Canadian athletes. That to me is more telling than who did make their feelings known.
4:56 Unfortunately, that is so true. I really tried to stay excited and look for a new reason to be as invested as I was since the 2018 Olympics. The skaters and rivalries that I was so invested in leading up to 2022 were not there anymore this season. There is a void and PeacockTV did not help the situation.
Just wondering where the $500,000 figure is coming from for the gofundme as an average hospital stay in any hospital's ICU around Calgary is roughly 8K/d, which would mean they still wouldn't be at 180,000 even if he were to stay there for at least 13 more days.
11:56 American healthcare at its finest 🙄
15:04 I was rooting for Mamun & the Averina sisters, but I cannot watch the gymnastics documentary, but it is in my YouTube watch later playlist. AND NOW IT'S BLOCKED!
18:32 oh my gosh, that was a big story in 2020(2021) summer games when the gymnast from Israel won over Russia!
To my knowledge, no PEDs used to enhance this nuanced skate poem.
Red ribbon is silver
Gold medal is blue
The ISU failed us
Now here comes the shoe
Nathan and Hanyu had longevity…as well as talent..For me..I am enjoying the sport..if 10 guys..pick any 10 skated to La La Land w the same choreo and technical as Kazuki had..and same costume..would all 10 programs look the same? Daniel? Morris? Krying Kevin? Torgs? Ilia? Sota? I do not think so.
32:25 Wow, interesting comment there. I was rooting for Davis/White in 2014 and really wanted them to beat Tessa and Scott.
As far as the fund..you understood, Jonathan did..I did..some people can't STFU..give or don't give..they have kids, bills, accommodations, etc..
Don't forget that the USA and Japan(?) still have received their team medals because the powers that be can't decide whether or not Russia cheated. The skaters were robbed of their medal ceremony and are still being robbed of their medals
I watched the Jonny show and to be honest I thought Galina was the wrong coach for him. I know you won’t like me saying that. She was far to controlling.
You are willy hate Trump…all is political, here we go
I donated anonymously to the Todd fund. Hospital stays and rehab is very expensive in the US and who knows how many months he will need. Wishing him and his family the best during this difficult time.
Россия =США
Чистый спорт=терапевтик допинг и трансгендерные спортсмены.
Спор<политика
Ложь =пропаганда
I had never heard about this Carlo Fassi cheating scandal. Enlightening.
Thank you for the open discussion about the political situation. I don't think the skaters who won the team events at the 2022 Olympics have received their medals yet. I know that Mattie and Zach have spoken to the fact that it has been a year and still not medals! What a mess!
Thank you so much for sharing “Over the Limit.” I got my partner to watch it and he loved it/was so moved by it. He’s not normally into the aesthetic sports. It’s just soooo messed up, but also so beautiful and weird. WHAT IS GOING ON IN RHYTHMIC GYMNASTICS?!
Thank you guys for today episode, so much info in it. I watched the Gymnastics documentary yesterday and It was fill with more info into how deep those conections has sports in russ with the olygarccs and goverment, and yes I had the same feeling with those coaches about some kind of scort situation too. Went into google after watching it to look for more info about this athletes and trainers, mind blowing.,
Dave, could you please elaborate a little on your personal issue with the Johnny Weir documentary? I love This and That but I'm sorry to say I haven't watched every episode lately. Thank you!
I was so touched seeing all the love and support for Todd and his family. We don’t often see such a genuine reaction love support and care, especially in this sport.
Coaching is America is a career that’s is funded all through skaters paying for each lesson. It’s also not always understood that skaters pay for the travel and lodge of coaches to events. That’s how it is supposed to work, but again, the details of how many events Todd was committed to traveling to this year, how many he already paid for and booked (and was waiting for some sort of reimbursement) or any events he paid for himself not expecting any reimbursement is unknown. Yes, some high level athletes have some sort of funding, but that doesn’t often include the coaches. Arrangements can vary. Out of the nature of being a coach, and being caring and supportive of athletes, a coach may not always charge or charge the full amount for comp travel, especially with skaters that don’t yet have the funding.
There are many facets to being a coach. Even coaches that charge $250 an hour don’t always have tons of money laying around. There can be a lot of off-ice time, competition time, planning time, etc. that’s uncompensated. In the US, they are independent contractors. Many rinks have a contract in which the coach is essentially paying a “rental fee” to the rink that involves the rink of taking percentage of lesson fees.
Coaches coach because they love skating and love teaching. They aren’t coaching for the money, fame or adoration- at least not in the US.
The money being raised for Todd is likely not going to be enough. It’s just hopefully enough for the family to not declare bankruptcy, pull their kids out of college, lose their home, or endure financial ruin.
In the US, a large percentage of people filing for bankruptcy do so over medical bills.
OMG…Fencing just allowed Russian and Belarusian athletes to international tournament starting from April 2023
Glad that they finally back to their sense
Hopefully ISU, FINA, FIG, World Athletics, FIFA, FIVB, FIBA etc will do the same and stop with their hypocrisy
Yeah, figure skating as a sport is dying a slow death, by its own organisation's procrastination on dealing with really serious issues of the sport. Like any other system, at the end of the day, a tolerance of corruption always erodes the good of any system in the end. I didn't bother with Recast, so to learn that, while they are still sitting on their hands on the disciplinary action for doping, they pivoted to data mining, on some platform no one has ever heard of? What on earth is wrong with the ISU?
Meanwhile you have Yuzuru Hanyu selling out his shows, in top athletic form and showing that figure skating can have an appeal, a market and fanbase if invested in and done correctly.
It's just 🤦♀️🤦♀️ 🤦♀️ the road not taken by this sport got it here.
Perhaps it's time for all sports to be divided between democracies (US led) and autocracies (China & Russia led), with separate organizations.
Great video you two! By the way, I don’t know if you would want them or not, but I have the 1998 Olympics ladies short program on VHS. I also have the 2001, two, or three I can’t remember which year, target stars are ice TV broadcast. It’s got Scott Hamilton, Kurt Browning, Tara Lipinski, Kristi Yamaguchi, etc. It’s the one where Kurt and Tara skate together and Tara has that purple sailor dress. I used to be a big Tara fan back in the day lol. I have seen that performance with Kurt and Tara on YouTube but I haven’t seen the entire show from that year. Maybe they are both already up, I don’t know.
I’m fascinated by what happened to Marina after Sochi. She had the IAM of her time and it totally imploded. Is it true that the Shibutanis blocked other US teams from training with Marina? Could she not find a halfway decent technique coach?
When did Kaori ever win against the top Russians? Being arguably best of the rest isn't a foil. Rika probably qualified before injury.
I really need a compilation of what Galina said in all the videos . I swear she is a highlight all on her own .
Dave, you should set up a ko-fi account for donations for all of your uploads. TSL deserves my netflix fee this month.
Great episode once again, David and Jonathon! Do you guys have any idea when they will have a result on the Kamila situation ?
Yassss Paramus! Yassss Elaine!
Dave Lease!!! My mother was a post-doc. Fulbright Scholar on her flute. In college, as a performance major, at the University of Tulsa it was required of her to be part of the marching band. She was color guard because she could play her flute up to her personal standard. So skating and flute bad idea because both could not be done well. And synchro def. needs a sousaphone!!!🥰
Bravo Tessa Virtue !❤!Do not allow ruzzians back to International stage anywhere !Shame on fencing and tennis organizations,oh well something always will have to fall out of a cliff
😂:yes-they all talking about that Turkey/Austria/ruzzia trying to create some skating summits 🤡, walk around sanctions 🙈-their usual ,only any way you will try to spin -it’s goes against sanctions
Unpopular opinion but I loved Tessa and Scott’s Free Dance in 2013/14 season. The music is lovely and I have performed the entire Seasons by Glazunov
figure skating was part of the sports in Peacock list of sports. So you could replay the show later. But now they eliminated figure skating fro the "sport list", so you have to watch it live…or …NOT AT ALL!!!!!…..someone has to TALK to PEACOCK!!!!!PLEASE
TSL, what has happened with IFS magazine?
Were you trying to say, "bribed by the Russians, Dave?"
The programs are all the same, as of course skaters are all going for the same elements now. I'm sorry but it's boring.
Yes, every once in a while someone like Yuzuru or Kamila transcends, however it's so relatively rare that it makes the rest of the skater's cookie-cutter performances look watered down. Creativity of original programs is a facet which could be mined, but as of now, it can't be.
How about a backstory on some of these folks like Todd? Not everyone knows this stuff.
And wtf "personal situation with Johnny Weir"?
Come on guys, seriously. Forgive me, but you guys do this a lot, and it feels very "clique – ish". If you want new viewers, this doesn't help.
Love you guys 💖
Seems like you all hate Russia and their athletes. However it always has been your main topic.
